• Cannot get laptop wifi to work in ubuntu 12.4

  Hi i have a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4106 laptop and i recently installed ubuntu 12.4 on it and i cannot get the wifi to connect for the life of me. When i tried ubuntu out before installing it, the wifi worked while windows was still installed on it. Then i installed ubuntu and now there is no wifi. I can't even flip the wifi network switch to the on position. I installed the driver from realtek for the linux driver and still nothing. Doing rfkill list all shows soft blocked: no and hard blocked: yes. Can anyone help me :p haha very frusterating. It probably is something very dumb. Thanks

• How do I turn off WLAN automatically when LAN is connected?

  I use my Thinkpad laptop with a docking station. The docking station is connected to my router via LAN. When I walk around the house I use my laptop with WLAN. Is it possible (and how) to manage these devices with a script or something to work like this: If a LAN-Connection is up, the OS should turn off Wifi and if LAN-Connection gets lost (undocking) Wifi should turn on automatically. I use Ubuntu 11.04 64bit with Gnome 2. The system works on an Lenovo ThinkPad R500 with. WLAN-Device: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh] LAN-Device: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• How do you make a bootable usb stick on OSX with a corrupted harddrive`?

  I cant access the desktop because my harddrive is corrupted. Therefore I want to make a bootable USB stick so i can transfer all of my important files to my External HD. Problem is that Im stuck on Step 3 --- http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx . Im not sure of what i should change this to: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso It says convert failed - No such file or directory. Obviously the problem is that i dont know the path to the USB, maybe you know how to find out? Please help me. Thanks. ps. Ive downloaded the ubuntu desktop amd64+mac.

  ok, I have a few questions regarding mysql. I am currently running ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS command line version. I am looking for a database that I can use. I am confused at this point because I am uninformed. mysql is just one database that is on the server? or can it contain several or many databases What programs do I use to access it on the server or is it a vt-100 type access? I understand that mysql comes with lamp? or ubuntu. I am thinking that it is already installed but not sure how to access it, but that is another question for later. Outside of the man pages and the ubuntu manual, is there a site for its setup and use? Thanks!

• How to work on my personal ideas during the weekend? [closed]

  I'm working full time 5 days a week, mostly between 10 and 14 hours a day. In the end of the day I'm very tired and just wanna take a shower, hang out and go to sleep. I have a lot of ideas that I want to implement and someday sell maybe through an online software business. I have my weekends free. However, when I get to the weekend I can't even imagine myself turn on the computer. But I really want to make my ideas happen, and I can't leave my job right now to devote myself only to my ideas. • Port flash game to native android

  Alright here is the problem: the creators of a quite popular flash-based game have asked me to port their game to Android. They are not interested in any other platforms so we don't need to be worrying about iOS or PC. They want the best performance on just Android (I guess that's the point of porting a flash-based game. They could have just went with it) They found Unity 'slow'. How would the performance (on android) of other engines compare? Are they expecting too much i.e. finding Unity slow? I am in favor of Unity since development is a little easier with more things being visual (I am not experienced as you might have guessed). • Drag and Drop Team Selection

  I have a Fantasy F1 Website, currently users select their teams using dropdown menus. It works OK but isn't as user friendly as I would like. I would like to implement a drag and drop type of system, there's jQuery code out there that would go part of the way to allowing me to do this: http://jqueryui.com/demos/draggable/ But I am not sure about how to integrate that into PHP and MySQL, my jQuery skills are limited! I'd also need to stop them spending more than a certain amount of money, each driver has a value and the teams can only spend a certain amount of money. There's also limits for example you can only pick a driver once, but you can have three different drivers. Finally, how would you decide that the user had picked their team, I don't want a submit button as that kind of defeats the object of the exercise! Thanks for any advice, I don't expect anyone to write the code for me but some pointers would be greatly appreciated.

• No Mouse Pointer - ubuntu 13.10

  just installed 13.10 on my HP Envy M6 laptop and have no mouse pointer. My USB mouse does not work and neither does the track pad. When I booted from a USB key everything worked OK but once installed it seems to have broken the mouse. Unlike other posts, there is no flicker, it simply doesn't work at all. My laptop is an i5 with 6gb and dual Intel and AMD radeon graphics. Any help would be gratefully received as I really can't stand Windows 8 any longer. Thanks.

  I am working with QUICKLY, using Python and PyGtk. I know there is an option for packaging; so I can create a .DEB file. This is for Ubuntu. I was reading about PyGTK and it seems that PyGtk runs on MS Windows too. So, can I execute an app built with Quickly on MS Windows? If so, how? • Ubuntu can't shut down correctly [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Problem with ubuntu 12.04 I am new to Ubuntu. I've installed 12.04 version of Ubuntu. It works fine but sometimes when i shutdown my PC from Ubuntu and when I try to start it again,nothing shows on the screen. It's always black screen instead of Acer logo (I have Acer aspire 5573) and the system restart again and again but and doesn't allow me to choose a OS (Ubuntu/windows,i use dualboot) To fix this I have to remove the battery and put it again.Then everything works fine. How do i fix this issue? I think that could be a incompatibility with the PC because everything works fine with windows. Thanks!

• ATI ES1000 graphic card

  I am installing Ubuntu 12.04 on an IBM x3250 M2 server, It has an ATI ES1000 with no acceleration (that does not bother me, we don't need it), we use it to connect remotely via FreeNX. FreeNX works fine, (except than in Windows 7 machines NX Client shows only icons and no text ?!) but the only resolution I can get in the monitor directly attached to the server is 800x600. The display manager also shows me two monitors!, the real one and one IBM 15". Which driver should I install?. It seems that the ATI driver that comes with Ubuntu does not work properly.   While I was looking for a battery management utility for my Dell E5420, I came to read this post - How can I limit battery charging to 80% capacity? . Sofar, I haven't found one that relates to my laptop. So, I wonder now if any battery manager utility can be found for my laptop specified above. I would be happy if someone could point me if such utility is available under Ubuntu 12.04 that can stop charging a battery at a certain percentage and to ONLY use A/C mode.   I'm senior C++ developer, I have also programmed professionally j2me some years. I'd like to make some apps and widgets for Android and I'd like to read up a bit on this new java stuff Android is using. I have (of course) checked out some tutorials and so but it seems I miss the basics, I can compile some stuff (read: examples) in eclipse but I just don't know how to, for example, add a service or what an 'intent' is, why my widget isn't called but successfully launches the main app when clicked and so on. So, what is a really good book for someone that is a developer but mostly need the hard facts about developing something specific like Android apps & widgets? Thanks a bunch!

• Are my Google Analytics ( 2 domains 1 site) duplicated or unique?

  We have recently built a new website with a new domain to replace an old website, and on the advice of our IT guys and web dev team have pointed both oldaddress.com's & newaddress.com's a records to the new website. Now, they both share the same google analytics code (UA-12345-1) and as such we have two entries in the Google Analytics dashboard. The problem is I'm still fairly novice with GA and as the reports seem VERY similar (~25k pageviews for each domain), are these figures exclusively for that domain? For example: oldaddress.com 25,400 pageviews newaddress.com 25,600 pageviews Does this mean that in total for this website I have 51,000 pageviews. Hope this is clear enough but let me know if anything needs clarifying. Thanks.

• Get Compiz working on x1300 ati

  Hi, I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a thinkpad T60 with an ati mobile x1300. Ubuntu isn't loading any proprietary drivers and compiz doesn't work. A google search turned up nothing. Sure, some people reported "bad performance", but I'm not getting any "performance" with compiz and these post were all for previous editions. I'm new to messing with ati drivers. Is there a way to make sure xorg-video-ati is loaded? Do I have to add any voodoo lines somewhere in /etc/X11/? Did anyone else have this problem? Thanks for your help!

• Is Java a good choice for small to medium size websites? [closed]

  Why do I ask? I want to use one language not two. Yes I know with Java and .NET I can program anything, but, as a website it should have a good design, I don't want to build ugly sites. Which is why for smaller sites I use PHP, I can get the e-comm I want and also a nice UI pretty easily, unlike in ASP.NET. But would I run into this design rstriction with Java (I've never used it). Plus, Java would also give me exposure to Android development. So..then I could ditch PHP? I guess I am looking for the 'one ring to rule them all', and not 2 or 3 (languages). Thanks in advance,

• Ubuntu installation time problem

  I am installing Ubuntu and I am stuck at a point. The step is when it is asking me to select partition. It is showing me error: "No file system is defined Please correct this from partitioning menu". I am getting this error when I am clicking "Install". I want Ubuntu to install in /dev/sda7 which is 226727 Mb. I have Windows 8 in my system and I want to dual boot the system. So how to correct this error? I want to allocate this whole partition to Ubuntu only. Secondly, What should I put in the option: "Device for boot loader installation"? By default it is somewhat like this: "ATA WDC WD5000..." something like this. Please tell my both these questions. I would be very thankful to you. Thanks.

I am planning to buy a remote pointing (not only just pointing, we will be able to track the slides) device for my powerpoint presentations. • Would it be possible to make an android app like this?

  I'm fairly new to android development and I'm not sure if the functionality I have in mind for my next project is actually feasible. I wanted to make a simple study guide app...when a user is browsing the web on their phone and they come across information they want to save to their study guide they would be able to highlight the sentence,long-click the highlighted text, and see an option to add it to their study guide(a pop-up list would appear). there would be more functionality than just this, for instance with-in the app you could create different study guide topics (biology,math, English..ect). But in general is it possible to have an app that is accessible by long-clicking when your browsing the web (as opposed to opening the App manually in order to use it.) -- If not, could I make it so you can open a browser within the app to do what I've described? This is going to be a school project so I don't care if it's totally original, I just want to make something simple and practical for practice. -- Thanks in advanced to anyone who helps!! :D

  I know many programming languages ,skills and concepts in very basic, such as PHP, Java, Object-oriented technology. Using PHP, I can build a simple website with CRUD, login function. Using Java, I can make an basic swing csv/plain text editor in which user can switch between 2 different views. In term of object-oriented Technology, I clearly understand what encapsulation, inheritance and Polymorphism are I want to know more about programming. Sometimes I "google" some of the topics I am interested at , the more I see on the internet, the more I feel I am a small potato in the world ( indeed I am ). The codings/concepts are difficult to understand. I lacks confidence right now so I am asking this question :( What is the best way to learn programming to advanced level? Just buy a book and read it page to page? Thanks for any helps
