• Macbook won't read disk

  I have a macbook that I erased the original iOS on to restart with Ubuntu but when I put in my home burned disk it doesn't read it correctly and makes loud clicking noises. I burned it on a TDK CD-R80 700 MB CD from Windows 7 and even did the confirm to make sure it burned correctly. It has never read CDs like that before, so it's weird. Should I just make another CD? Or is there something wrong with the Macbook.

• How can I browse by artist in Banshee?

  I have ripped many CDs onto my computer. Some are compilations. I like to listen to entire albums at a time. The artist view is no use to me as it splits up artists from the compilations, and the album-artist view is a bit better but it still has problems because it splits an album up by each different artist listed in it. Is there a way to force banshee to list the albums? That would be most useful.

But today I tried to check some CDs and I was surprised that Ubuntu doesn't automatically refresh the CD/DVDs inserted in my media drive. I had to eject manually the CD/DVD from Ubuntu and then Insert the new CD and only then Ubuntu reads the data in the newly inserted CD/DVD. How can I fix the CD/DVD refresh for the media drive so that Ubuntu 10.10 recognize it automatically?

• GRUB problem after uninstalling mint

  I've uninstalled Linux Mint 13 today from my netbook. The netbook was running Windows XP and Linux Mint on dual boot. I've deleted the Linux's partition and now whenever I turn on the computer I get "Partitation not found" grub error... I have no CD drive so I can't insert any repair CDs or XP CD. I'm currently hopeless. And now I can't even load Linux Mint from my USB drive... Can someone help me?

• ubuntu image size 732 mb - too big for cd

  i have an old pc that can't handle a boot stick install, so i have to create an actual, old fashioned boot cd. however, the image size for ubuntu 12.04 is 732mb, which is too large for cds, which can hold only 700mb. the maintainers of ubuntu 12.04 say the image size will never go over 700mb, and indeed, the download size seemed to be 689mb. Brasero says it won't burn the cd because the file is too big what's going on?

  I've just installed Banshee on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and manually imported 2 CDs. I needed to manually insert the track information as I haven't figured out how to access an online database. When I try to play track 17 from CD1, it always plays track 17 from CD2. The metadata should have been enough to differentiate between these tracks. How do I manually alter what is recorded in Banshee's database?

• Install Ubuntu 10.10 from loopback mounted ISO image

  I have a laptop with a faulty BIOS that has stopped booting from CDs even though it supports it (and it doesn't support booting from USB drives). I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on it. I already had 9.10 installed. I tried using Kexec, but it refused to accept the kernel image. Eventually I found this page which shows how to make GRUB 2 boot from an ISO file. That worked fine, and I am now running the live image from the file. (If I can get this to work, it will be my new preferred way of installing Ubuntu, as it saves CDs and boots much faster.) However, I can't install it. The installer won't make changes to the hard drive, because the partition containing the ISO is mounted (and can't be unmounted because it is in use). Even if I only choose to use other partitions that are not mounted, the installer refuses to go any farther. Clearly, it should be possible using other partitions on the same disk. Is there any way to work around this issue or force the installer to go ahead?

• DVD drive won't work after installing software

  DVD drive was already region-free but for some reason would not play a certain DVD as it was the "wrong region". This is the first time I've played a DVD on the drive, but I've imported a lot of CDs before and they always worked fine, even CDs bought from the USA (I live in the UK). To get around this, I downloaded a piece of software called "DVD Region Killer". (Clicking the link won't start the download, so go ahead and check it.) After this, the drive isn't recognised. It won't show up in "My Computer", and when I insert a disc it will start to whir but not take action, i.e. iTunes won't recognise that I have put a CD in. In the Device Manager, the drive shows up with a caution-sign. The device status reads: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) Disabling, uninstalling and reinstalling does not help. Clearly the software download is the issue, but it is difficult to remove. The only files I can find in Program Files are: C:\Program Files (x86)\Elaborate Bytes\DVD Region Killer which contains a changelog and a HTML document which has no info on uninstalling. It doesn't show up on "Add or Remove Programs", or even as a background process when I press ctrl-alt-del. Apparently it has no interface as such, and can be accessed by an icon in the system tray, (see review in link) but I don't see the icon. If it helps to know, I have a Dell Inspiron running Windows 8 64-bit, and the model of the DVD drive is: MATSHITA DVD+-RW UJ8C2 Thanks in advance.

  I'm using Dell Inspiron 1420 - 32 Bit - Windows Vista, since 2.5 years. I'm facing a strange problem with my CD/DVD-drive. I cannot run/play a CD/DVD which I get burned from my friends. But when I insert Genuine CD, I'm able to play/run it. And when I try to install my Vista package which I got with my notebook, the CD/DVD gets loaded. If I insert a CD/DVD which I get from my friend, CD doesn't get loaded and the system gets hanged. But all these CDs/DVDs work on other systems. I've tested it on many of my friends PCs. So, now I'm able to run only genuine CDs & a few genuine DVDs. My Experience/Experiments: I tried to install Windows Vista using Genuine DVD - It worked I tried to install Ubuntu which I got from shipped from Canonical Ltd. - It worked I tried to install OpenSUSE .iso file burned to a DVD in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs(Tested in 4 other PCs) Tried to play a DVD containing movies, burned in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. • Can't boot in Ubuntu after windows upgrade

  After my lastest update for Ubuntu and Windows XP, I got a Grub error on booting the next day. ls lists the following (without () ): sd0 sd1, msdos sd2 sd5 sd6 When I tried to get into one with (sd0,xy)/ it doesn't detect system or unknown file system error. I tried to boot to a live session with a Knoppix live CD and found out that all data exists. I also tried to recover with TestDisk and it finds all systems. • Script to copy files on CD and not on hard disk to a new directory

  I need to copy files from a set of CDs that have a lot of duplicate content, with each other, and with what's already on my hard disk. The file names of identical files are not the same, and are in sub-directories of different names. I want to copy non-duplicate files from the CD into a new directory on the hard disk. I don't care about the sub-directories - I will sort it out later - I just want the unique files. I can't find software to do that - see my post at SuperUser http://superuser.com/questions/129944/software-to-copy-non-duplicate-files-from-cd-dvd Someone at SuperUser suggested I write a script using GNU's "find" and the Win32 version of some checksum tools. I glanced at that, and have not done anything like that before. I'm hoping something exists that I can modify. I found a good program to delete duplicates, Duplicate Cleaner (it compares checksums), but it won't help me here, as I'd have to copy all the CDs to disk, and each is probably about 80% duplicates, and I don't have room to do that - I'd have to cycle through a few at a time copying everything, then turning around and deleting 80% of it, working the hard drive a lot. • Looking for all-in-one drm/installer/CD creation kit.

  The company I work for has a download manager in place that handles distribution, DRM, installation of our products - when a user gets them off our website. However, we're using an clunky system for packaging and protecting our products when we do press releases or make retail CDs. Part of the antiquation problem is the fact that the automated system that works with the installer- and DRM-creation software we have is a disaster that needs to be put out of my misery. The list of products that we currently produce, that I would like a new system MUST be capable of producing: Retail CDs, with a certain level of obfuscation to make copying difficult. Downloadable installers that time out after a few hours of use of the product. After the time has expired, removing and reinstalling the product will leave you still blocked from use. Installers that will fail to work after a certain date. I'd love to be able to just feed a tool the directory where a complete product resides and have the installer generated with a couple command-line operations. (The command-line issue is non-negotiable this well be called by an automated tool.) A single-solution package would be far preferable. Software with royalty-based or per-unit based licensing is not an option.

  Is there any way to combine two CDs? I have two game discs that I would like to put on one CD for easier distribution. These games are very very old and are only about 250 megs for their entire contents. Since they depend on their paths to run correctly, is there a way to write them to a disc in a certain way that makes windows think they're two separate discs?

  Why would BitDefender Bootable Rescue CD (and loads of other Rescue CDs too) be able to identify but unable to fix or delete malware? It can however put it into quarintine. And what happens when the viruses are put into quarintine? It dosn't really mean anything if it can successfully put the malware into quarintine if it's a CD-bootable OS. It's only quarintined in the context of the memory it exists in. When I restart windows, I'm still infected with loads of viruses. Thanks Dave

  Let's say I've got around 50 PCs with identical specs but no CD or floppy drives and a blank hard disk, is there an efficient way to install (and update) an OS and software on each of them? Would I have to go to each PC one by one with the CDs or is there a way to install over a network? In the case of Windows XP would you need 50 separate copies?
