  • MacBook Pro screen flickers, and lines appears after using it a while

    My aunt gave me her old MacBook Pro, but unfortunately it has a few issues. The main problem is that lines appears after I use it with applications that heavily depend on graphics, but they don't necessarily appear in that window. I also figured out that these lines appear with the windows, so the cursor goes over the lines, and menus and other windows also overlap them. If I take a screenshot of the window by itself, no lines appear. It seems obvious to me that this is a driver-related problem. Unfortunately, there are no updates or anything for the driver. At first I tried asking for a solution at Apple's forum, but they were only able to figure out that "something is wrong with the video card". I checked the MacBook with an Ubuntu disk, and the screen seemed OK. I've uploaded some photos to my Picasa account to show the symptoms. Recently, I've also noticed the screen flickering when using applications that need high performance graphics, like games. Also, the MacBook Pro came with Mac OS X Tiger, but she upgraded it to Leopard (she only brought the Tiger disk with her.) What can I do with this?

  • Ati X1600 driver problem on Mac

    Hi all, I currently own a 06' Macbook pro 1.1, and since some months I have recurrent problems of displays bug or artifacts. I searched quickly around to see that a lot of other users on Mac (iMac or Macbook pro) also have the same problem due to a problem for the X1600 video card. Apparently it's due to overheating problem, in my case even without warming a lot I have very bad display bugs such as colorful pixel lines, or glitches, and freeze and crash, all of this on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. I found this interesting article here talking about this problem and trying to gather people so that Apple take the serious GPU problem in consideration. In one of the comments, an user said he removed all bundle named with "radeon" and then he had no more problems under Leopard, and seems ot work fine well too on Snow Leopard. I did the same thing, I removed the bundles of the driver, restart, and no more problems, but not more 3D acceleration, which is not an acceptable solution. For those interested, here is the list of files to be deleted to stop having this problem. /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GLDriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000VADriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle I would like to know if there is a way to fix this using other drivers if that's possible or by creating a group to force Apple to make a replacement program in place.   • How to close all tabs in Safari using AppleScript?

    I have made a very simple AppleScript to close all tabs in Safari. The problem is, it works, but not completely. Here's the code: tell application "Safari" repeat with aWindow in windows repeat with aTab in tabs of aWindow aTab close end repeat end repeat end tell I've also tried this script: tell application "Safari" repeat with i from 0 to the number of items in windows set aWindow to item i of windows repeat with j from 0 to the number of tabs in aWindow set aTab to item j of tabs of aWindow aTab close end repeat end repeat end tell ... but it does not work either. I tried that on my system (MacBook Pro jan 2008), as well as on a Mac Pro G5 under Tiger and the script fails on both, albeit with a much less descriptive error on Tiger. The problem is that only a couple of tabs are closed. Running the script a few times closes a few tab each time until none is left, but always fails with the same error after closing a few tabs. Under Leopard I get an out of bounds error. Since I am using fast enumeration (not using "repeat from 0 to number of items in windows") I don't see how I can get an out of bounds error with this... My goal is to use the Cocoa Scripting Bridge to close tabs in Safari from my Objective-C Cocoa application but the Scripting Bridge fails in the same manner. The non-deletable tabs show as NULL in the Xcode debugger, while the other tabs are valid objects from which I can get values back (such as their title). In fact I tried with the Scripting Bridge first then told myself why not try this directly in AppleScript and I was surprised to see the same results. I must have a glaring omission or something in there... (seems like a bug in Safari AppleScript support to me... :S) I've used repeat loops and Obj-C 2.0 fast enumeration to iterate through collections before with zero problems, so I really don't see what's wrong here.     I am trying to create an array of 20 character strings with a maximum of 17 characters that are obtained from a file named "words.dat". After that the program should truncate the string only showing the first 17 characters and completely ignore the rest of that string. However My question is: I am not quite sure how to accomplish this, can anyone give me some insight on how to accomplish this task?   • Is the PowerPC (G4) architecture better than Intel x86 architecture for certain types of application

    I have a PowerMac G4 from around the year 2000. It's a serviceable Unix machine but I don't do much with it since I have plenty of Pentium 4 machines around with Linux on them. I was wondering if the PowerPC based machine is capable of handling certain tasks faster or "better" than Intel based machines, or is it just another computer to use. I have OSX 10.4 Tiger for it, and I don't mind installing Yellow Dog Linux or UbuntuPPC if that will make it more useable.

    I am trying to print multiple sheets from the same Excel workbook into ONE PDF file. But it frequently prints them seperately or only the first sheet. I selected all the sheets and made them have the same page setup. I am working on Tiger and from the Print dialogue, I click on the left-hand bottom button, "Save PDF" and from there I choose "Save PDF-X". Anyone have another solution for me?

After Leopard came out Terminal got several improvements, like supporting tabs and implementing profiles. Since that day I just don't see the need for iTerm, but I still notice there's people using it. There's something I'm missing? Why should I use iTerm over Terminal?

However, it seems that option has been lost somewhere between the Leopard and Snow Leopard upgrade. Or am I a bit blind? Can someone please point me in the right direction?

    We're moving all our Mac's from local logins to OpenDirectory logins in an effort to keep everything secure and to also solve issues we have with a Tiger server buggering permissions on an AFP shared drive. To cut it short, I want users to be able to login to their OpenDirectory account and I then want the AFP share point to mount using the credentials they just logged in with. Is it worth the hassle to install Ubuntu, or should I keep MAC OS. The unit has MAC OS 10.4 (Tiger). It is used for normal day to day operations, word processing, spreadsheets, browsing, and keeping track of finances. I'd like to install Ubuntu if I can. So is it possible?

  • How to update a mesh position base on a pressed key?

    I have a mesh loaded from a file, like a tiger mesh. At the first time it locates at A position, then if I press a left key, it will moves to B position but the problem is if I press a left key one more time, it will move from B position to C position. It means that the amount I want to move the mesh will base on the current position instead of the first time rendering position. I can do it if I have a array vertices then I just update the vertex buffer, but a mesh loaded from a file does not have an array vertices, so how to do it? Anybody help me, please?
