  • Pre-Loading von Tabellen in 11g

    Tabellen und Indizes in den Cache zu laden, damit möglichst wenig I/O durchgeführt wird, ist eine häufig anzutreffende Anforderung. Diese Technik nennt man auch Pre-Loading oder Pre-Caching von Datenbank Objekten. Die Durchführung ist dabei sehr einfach. Gleich zu Beginn werden spezielle SQL Statements wie SELECT Statements mit Full Table Scan oder Index Scan durchgeführt, damit die entsprechenden Objekte vollständig in den Cache geladen werden können. Besonders interessant ist dieser Aspekt auch im Zusammenhang mit der Erstellung von Testumgebungen. Falls beispielsweise kein Warmup möglich ist, kann man bevor der eigentliche Test durchgeführt wird, bestimmte Tabellen und Indizes mit dieser Technik vorab in den Buffer Cache laden.  Der folgende Artikel zeigt wie man eine Tabelle in 11g in den Buffer Cache laden kann und gibt Tipps zur Durchführung.

  • exchange live feed with pre-recorded video for wireless internet camera to router

    I wasn't sure if this should be asked in Web Applications, or Network Engineering, or what... Long story short, I have a video camera with mic that is wirelessly connected to a router (NETGEAR R6200), which can then be viewed through an online service. I would like to be able to somehow exchange the live feed with a pre-recorded video, or image, preferably with pre-recorded sound (the sound of silence would be easiest). Can I place this inbetween the camera and the router, do I need to redirect the camera feed to my laptop first, and then push out the fake video/audio onto the router, without the service knowing the difference? Thanks much and I hope this is well understood!

    I think I am going to use Google spreadsheets and an embedded form. I see that it is possible to pre-populate the fields with URL parameters. So I think I just need a way to redirect with the correct data from a database when a user goes to their Personalized URL. I have no idea how to do the second part. Or if it is even the best way to do it. How do I set up Personalized URLS? How do I redirect from those URLS to the spreadsheets? Is this even the best method for pre-filled forms?

    We have the following tools in place: Subversion (Version 1.5.9) Polarion (version 3.2.2) Polarion is based on Subversion, so on every action that changes anything (which is often the case), Polarion will use a Subversion commit to change anything. All things are currently stored in one and only one repository, so every commit of every user (some 100-200 on the same repository) will trigger the pre-commit hook. So what is the best strategy to provide pre-commit hooks that will trigger only for some, but not all projects run as fast as possible, because every pre-commit hook will block all other commits. We have tried to implement pre-commit hooks with Java (using SVNKit), but this will start on every commit a Java VM. So any ideas how to implement that nicely?

  • UPK Customer Success Story: The City and County of San Francisco

    The value of UPK during an upgrade is a hot topic and was a primary focus during our latest customer roundtable featuring The City and County of San Francisco: Leveraging UPK to Accelerate Your PeopleSoft Upgrade. As the Change Management Analyst for their PeopleSoft 9.0 HCM project (Project eMerge), Jan Crosbie-Taylor provided a unique perspective on how they're utilizing UPK and UPK pre-built content early on to successfully manage change for thousands of city and county employees and retirees as they move to this new release. With the first phase of the project going live next September, it's important to the City and County of San Francisco to 1) ensure that the various constituents are brought along with the project team, and 2) focus on the end user aspects of the implementation, including training. Here are some highlights on how UPK and UPK pre-built content are helping them accomplish this: As a former documentation manager, Jan really appreciates the power of UPK as a single source content creation tool. It saves them time by streamlining the documentation creation process, enabling them to record content once, then repurpose it multiple times. With regard to change management, UPK has enabled them to educate the project team and gain critical buy in and support by familiarizing users with the application early on through User Experience Workshops and by promoting UPK at meetings whenever possible. UPK has helped create awareness for the project, making the project real to users. They are taking advantage of UPK pre-built content to: Educate the project team and subject matter experts on how PeopleSoft 9.0 works as delivered Create a guide/storyboard for their own recording Save time/effort and create consistency by enhancing their recorded content with text and conceptual information from the pre-built content Create PeopleSoft Help for their development databases by publishing and integrating the UPK pre-built content into the application help menu Look ahead to the next release of PeopleTools, comparing the differences to help the team evaluate which version to use with their implemtentation When it comes time for training, they will be utilizing UPK in the classroom, eliminating the time and cost of maintaining training databases. Instructors will be able to carry all training content on a thumb drive, allowing them to easily provide consistent training at their many locations, regardless of the environment. Post go-live, they will deploy the same UPK content to provide just-in-time, in-application support for the entire system via the PeopleSoft Help menu and their PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal. Users will already be comfortable with UPK as a source of help, having been exposed to it during classroom training. They are also using UPK for a non-Oracle application called JobAps, an online job application solution used by many government organizations. Jan found UPK's object recognition to be excellent, yet it's been incredibly easy for her to change text or a field name if needed. Please take time to listen to this recording. The City and County of San Francisco's UPK story is very exciting, and Jan shared so many great examples of how they're taking advantage of UPK and UPK pre-built content early on in their project.   • Problem inserting pre-ordered values to quadtree

    There's this string containing B, W and G (standing for black, white and gray). It defines the pre-ordered path of the quadtree I want to build. I wrote this method for filling the QuadTree class I also wrote but it doesn't work, it inserts correctly until it reaches a point in the algorithm it needs to "return". I use math quadrants convention order for insertion, such as northeast, northwest, southwest and southeast. How do I make it import the string correctly? Ignore the string reading process, suppose the method is called and it has to do it's job.

  • Compiling vs using pre-built binaries performance?

    Will performance be better (quicker) if I manually compile the source for a software component for the actual machine that it will be used on, compared to if the source was compiled on another platform perhaps for many different architectures? I got some good results compiling source that I downloaded and I wonder whether this was due to compiling it instead of downloading a pre-compiled binary which is often the case with software updates.

  • Hot: Pre-built Developer VMs from OTN

    For those of you who haven't already played with it, Oracle VM VirtualBox is an awfully cool desktop virtualization tool. Even better, it's free. We OTN-ers like it even more than you will though because it allows us to freeze-dry entire software stacks into VM images. Developers can simply download a few files, assemble them with a script we provide, and then import and run the resulting pre-built VM in VirtualBox. Voila, instant (insert name here) stack. These VMs are particularly handy in support of in-person workshops, but there's no reason we can't make them available for everyone. Which we have done, in Java, database, and SOA/BPM flavors. (All "ingredients" are listed at the referenced link, and they are extensive.) Now that we have the kinks worked out, other flavors are sure to become available in 2011. Now go get 'em!

    I’m thrilled to see that Justin Kestelyn has a post that pre-built Oracle VirtualBox images are now available on OTN.  There are VMs for various Oracle software stacks including one for Database, one for Java with Glassfish, and one for SOA and BPM products that includes WebLogic Server. This is just one example of the synergy of a combined Oracle and Sun delivering improvements for customers.  These VMs make it even more straight-forward to get started with Oracle software in a development environment without having to worry about initial software installation and configuration. I’ve been a bit quiet lately on the blogging front, but I’m currently working on another area leveraging the best of Oracle and Sun.  Oracle is uniquely positioned to deliver engineered systems that optimize the entire stack of software and hardware.  You’ve probably seen the announcements about Exalogic and I’m excited about the potential to deliver major advancements for middleware.  More to come…

    I´m starting up a new project. It´s going to be a web browser game, developed using HTML5, JavaScript and CSS3. I have some general questions regarding the process of game developing. Should you know everything about your game by the time you start writing the first lines of code? I mean should you know all the details, all the things the player can and can not do? Basically: should you be done writing down new ideas before you begin coding? I understand the pre-production process is about documenting, doing research etc. What does that mean? Does it mean I should open up Word and write down everything about the game? For example what should happen when you click on different things etc. Thanks for your help!
