• How can I quickly access the Microsoft Word zoom setting?

  I get a lot of Word documents to work on, and the first thing I always do is access the zoom setting (View- Zoom) and change the zoom to "Page Width". There's no keyboard shortcut for the zoom settings, and I do it enough times that I'd like a quicker way. In Pages, there's a little pop-up that lets you choose the zoom you want. Is there a way to quickly change the zoom settings in Word? Thanks.

  I heard that even a journaled filesystems such as EXT3/EXT4 might corrupted during power failure, e.g. from wikipedia [1]: In the event of a system crash or power failure, such file systems are quicker to bring back online and less likely to become corrupted. I'm after a rough estimate because my installation seems to be running quite slowly (previously, I've installed Win7 32bit on a laptop and it went much quicker but maybe there are differences between 32 and 64 bit editions).

• MongoDB: ReplicaSet slower than a corresponding Master/Slave config

  Is it true that a mongoDB configured as a replicaset (lets say two nodes + an arbiter) will always be slower than the same DB and server specs but configured as a Master? I've run some tests and found out that for a fresh DB, RS is a little quicker than Master/Slave config but when the DB is getting bigger than ~100k records the latter is getting much snappier. am I missing something here? PS: I was testing it with mongoid driver for ruby.

• Does gunzip work in memory or does it write to disk?

  We have our log files gzipped to save space. Normally we keep them compressed and just do gunzip -c file.gz | grep 'test' to find important information but we're wondering if it's quicker to keep the files uncompressed and then do the grep. cat file | grep 'test' There has been some discussions about how gzip works if it would make sense that if it reads it into memory and unzips then the first one would be faster but if it doesn't then the second one would be faster. Does anyone know how gzip uncompresses data?

• Is auto-logon on laptop with encrypted hard drive secure?

  I have the complete hdd of my laptop encrypted (with the Windows built-in Bitlocker) and thus have to login two times upon booting (Bitlocker and user account). Since I'm the only person using the computer (and knowing the Bitlocker password), I was thinking about automatically login into the user account to make the boot process smoother and quicker. In which cases/scenarios is this a bad idea and the additional login gives a true additionally layer of security?

• Backing up a 22 GB MySQL database daily

  Right now I am able to do the backup using mysqldump. But I have to take down the web server AND it takes around 5 minutes to do the backup. If I don't take down the web server, it takes forever and never finishes + the website becomes inaccessible during the backup. Is there a quicker/better way to backup my 22 GB and growing database?   I am modeling walking insects. I implement them as cuboids and use forces (including friction and drag), to control motion. However, the movement characteristics of this 'sliding box' physics don't match those due to a legged creature. For example, legged creatures near-instantly accelerate to their top speed; whereas applying a force to a box takes time to accelerate it. The applied force can be increased along with the counteracting drag, giving much quicker acceleration (via force) to a max speed (via drag). However, this also means the force that creatures can exert when pushing on other objects is increased. Does anyone know of any techniques using a physics engine to cheaply model walking creatures?

I was recently involved in a situation where I felt like the customers were arbitrarily demanding for more developers on a team which already had too many developers. They were scared the project was going to be late (and it probably will be). Personally, I was scared we were going to fulfill Brook's Law. The group of programmers already lacked in-depth business knowledge, and some were even new to the technology (.NET), yet the customer wanted to add more developers who had even less business knowledge. The impression was that this would make the project get done quicker. I started wondering if the customer, who is extremely bright, but presumably knows little about IT project management, should really be the one determining team size.

  I am writing a Card game that has a deck size of 30 cards, each one of them has to be a unique, or at least a another (new XXXX) statement in a .push_back function, into a vector. Right now my plan is to add them to a vector one at a time with four separate, depending on what deck type you choose, collections of thirty .push_back functions. • Corona SDK (Lua) vs Native Obj-C for iPhone only word puzzle type game [closed]

  I am trying to decide on whether to use the Corona SDK & Lua versus native Objective-C to develop an iOS app. This will be the first game on any smartphone I have developed and so its not that ambitious - a single player word puzzle type game - something sort of like scrabble. The advantages of Corona I can see are: Lua is probably easier to learn than Obj-C (shorter learning curve) meaning a possibly quicker development time Possibility to port to Android once its finished Advantages of native Obj-C are: Access to all and latest features of iOS More / faster available libraries Has anyone made this decision before?
