• agile as our first project management methodology [closed]

  we are a small web development company that has till now been working on client projects. we employed little to no project management and that has cost us a lot. we've used only the barest of tools (wireframing, prototyping etc) but no formal project management process has been put into place. we've learnt from our mistakes and want to prevent them from happening in the future. also, we are looking to develop our own products and we understand that putting in a proper project management paradigm will help. after a lot of research, we've sort of settled on agile for a few reasons: agile seems to scale well with team size. our team is small right now and we hope to grow and agile seems to be a process that we can put in place now and grow with. agile will help us with customers who just can't seem to make up their minds and keep changing requirements. we'd appreciate the community's thoughts on this. is this a correct way to think? will agile be a good system to put into place, where there has been none till now? are there any resources that may help us in our position? pretty much all of the resources that we've found start by comparing agile to x (where x = any management methodology) and why its better than x and how agile can be implemented in place of x. we're looking for resources that can help us out in our particular situation. thanks for all your help!

• Why does TDD work?

  Test-driven development (TDD) is big these days. I often see it recommended as a solution for a wide range of problems here in Programmers SE and other venues. I wonder why it works. From an engineering point of view, it puzzles me for two reasons: The "write test + refactor till pass" approach looks incredibly anti-engineering. If civil engineers used that approach for bridge construction, or car designers for their cars, for example, they would be reshaping their bridges or cars at very high cost, and the result would be a patched-up mess with no well thought-out architecture. The "refactor till pass" guideline is often taken as a mandate to forget architectural design and do whatever is necessary to comply with the test; in other words, the test, rather than the user, sets the requirement. In this situation, how can we guarantee good "ilities" in the outcomes, i.e. a final result that is not only correct but also extensible, robust, easy to use, reliable, safe, secure, etc.? This is what architecture usually does. Testing cannot guarantee that a system works; it can only show that it doesn't. In other words, testing may show you that a system contains defects if it fails a test, but a system that passes all tests is not safer than a system that fails them. Test coverage, test quality and other factors are crucial here. The false safe feelings that an "all green" outcomes produces to many people has been reported in civil and aerospace industries as extremely dangerous, because it may be interepreted as "the system is fine", when it really means "the system is as good as our testing strategy". Often, the testing strategy is not checked. Or, who tests the tests? I would like to see answers containing reasons why TDD in software engineering is a good practice, and why the issues that I have explained above are not relevant (or not relevant enough) in the case of software. • Service and Web Reference crashes Visual Studio

• How to disable Events for a while in Javascript or jQuery

  Hello, I am wondering if you guys know different approach to disable an event for a while. Let me elaborate this more : Lets say I have a div or button which has a subscriber to its onclick event. To prevent the double click when the the methods are doing some ajax things, these are the some of the ways we can do : Disable the button till the method finishes its job Unbind till the methods finishes its job and then bind it again. Use some kind of flagging system like boolean so it will prevent method from working more than once. So is there any other ways, maybe some javascript tricks or jQuery tricks which is more efficient and better practice. Thanks in advance.

I saw that we can use distint ways to calculcate the triangles. I will make the size of the triangles equal till 1kz and after that obtained with log function. What should we do now? With the frequency spectrum and the triangles defined.. - We should filter the frequency (frequencies limited to the triangles, if goes higher only counts till the triangle limit) and calculate the value of each triangle (and after that continue the algorithm). But when does the mel conversation happens? m = 2595 log (f/700 + 1) When do we pass from frequency to mel.. Can someone guide me in the right direction plz :d

• Why flash makes Firefox not to respond

  I have a full page flash animation. When this page is open at Firefox and I want to minimize or re-size Firefox screen, minimize button starts to blink and Firefox does not take any action till this tab is closed. There is not too much code in the flash file. What can cause this? Also this could not be related with full page. I saw other flash files doing same thing. As I remember same problem at Daily Motion. When trying to switch tab nothing happens till I stop video or close the tab.

• Getting strange response on calling verifyReceipt to verify an in-app

  Hi I am making a call to verifyReceipt to validate an in-app purchase but am getting a very strange response (the response is b) The same code worked till some time back. But I stopped the app debugging while the trans was being verified at one point. From there on, the only response I get is b. I checked the code and it has nothing wrong. As I said, the same code worked till I stopped this trans mid-way. Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks.

  If i turn off WiFi, i’m not able to open the app ( this is with no data connection, even without data connection it should display cached items ) If i tun off WiFi and turn on GPRS the app cannot recognize this and gives the error page no Wifi/GPRS connection. if i restart the phone with GPRS on the app works fine till i change data connection type. if i restart the phone with WiFi on the app works fine till i change the data connection type. whenever i change the data connection type i have to restart the phone so the app can recognize the connection type. Why my android app does not recognize WiFi, GPRS upon changing data connection in real time?

  I am trying to get data from my Database of those who have upcoming birth days in next few days(declared earlier) it's working fine for days but this query will not work if i add 24 days to current date cause than it will need change in month. i wonder how can i do it declare @date int=10, @month int=0 select * from STUDENT_INFO where DATEPART(DD,STDNT_DOB) between DATEPART(DD,GETDATE()) and DATEPART(DD,DATEADD(DD,@date,GETDATE())) and DATEPART(MM,STDNT_DOB) = DATEPART(MM,DATEADD(MM,@month,GETDATE())) This query works fine but it only checks date between 8 & 18 but if i use it like this declare @date int=30, @month int=0 select * from STUDENT_INFO where DATEPART(DD,STDNT_DOB) between DATEPART(DD,GETDATE()) and DATEPART(DD,DATEADD(DD,@date,GETDATE())) and DATEPART(MM,STDNT_DOB) = DATEPART(MM,DATEADD(MM,@month,GETDATE())) it will return nothing since it require addition in month as well If I Use it like this declare @date int=40, @month int=0 select * from STUDENT_INFO where DATEPART(DD,STDNT_DOB) between DATEPART(DD,GETDATE()) and DATEADD(DD,@date,GETDATE()) and DATEPART(MM,STDNT_DOB) = DATEPART(MM,DATEADD(MM,@month,GETDATE())) than it will return results till the last of this month but will not show till 18/12 which was required

• Porting existing code from C# 2.0 to C#3.0 and .Net 3.5 (possibly .net 4.0)

  Our one and only enterprise application suite has been developed over last 3 years using C# 2.0 on .Net 3.0. We use winforms and WCF heavily. The development tools is VS 2005 Pro / TFS 2005 / Resharper 3.1 As technical lead I obviously understand the benefits in a move to C#3.0 and .Net 3.5. But I want to convince management for a move to C#3.0, .Net 3.5, VS 2008 and TFS 2008. They will obviously be interested in things like productivity, cost, quality etc. Please suggest me some ideas on how best to make my case. Given that this may not happen till mid next year am I better off to hold till VS 2010 and .Net 4.0 is out.

• Technology Selection for a dynamic product

  We are building a product for Procurement Domain in JAVA. Following are the main technical requirements. Platform Independent Database Independent Browser Independent In functional requirements the product is very dynamic in nature. The main reason being the procurement process around the world is different from client to client. Briefly we need to have a dynamic workflow engine and a dynamic template engine. The workflow engine by which we can define any kind of workflows and the template engine allows us to define any kind of data structures and based on definition it can get the user input through workflow. We have been developing this product for almost 2 years. It has been a long time till we can get down with the dynamics of requirements. Till now we have developed a basic workflow and template engine and which is in use at one of the client. We have been using following technologies. GWT-Ext (Front End Framework) Hibernate (Database Layer) In between we have faced some issues with GWT-Ext (mainly browser compatibility) and database optimization due to sub classing in hibernate. For resolving GWT-Ext issue, which a dying community so we decided to move to SmartGWT. In SmartGWT we faced issues related to loading and now we are able to finalize that GWT 2.3 will be the way to go as the library is rich and performance is upto the mark. We are able to almost finalize GWT-Spring based front and middle layer. In hibernate, we found main issues with sub-classing due to that it was throwing astronomical queries and sometimes it would stop firing any queries for 5-10 seconds or may be around 30 seconds and then resume again. Few days back I came to one article related to ORM. I am a traditional .Net SQL developer and I have always worked with relational database. Reading through this article, I also found it relating to the issues I face. I am still not completely convinced of using hibernate and this article just supported my opinion. Following are the questions for which I am looking for an answer. Should we be going with Hibernate in case of dynamic database requirements and the load of the data will be heavy in future? How can we partition the data, how we can efficiently join the data, how we can optimize the queries? If the answer is no then how do we achieve database independence? Is our choice related to GWT and Spring proper or do we need to change that too? Should we use any other key value pair database if the data is dynamic in nature and it is very difficult to make it relational?

• Flashing screen during videos and games

  I recently switched from Vista to Ubuntu 12.10 on my HP laptop and I've been having issues with my graphics. Everything is fine till I watch a video/play a game or (sometimes) when I visit the software centre. At that point large portions of the screen start flashing and everything gets rather slow. I'm looking for a way to remedy this. For reference I'm using Firefox and I'm unsure what my video card is because it's listed as unknown when I check my system settings.

• No sound in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 a month ago and am using it till now. I failed to notice that all this time there was no sound at all while running Ubuntu, even while playing a game in Wine. The weird thing is that only the startup sound comes when I log in (Indian/African drum tone), then comes the utter silence. I tested both Digital Output (S/PDIF) and the speakers in the sound settings but can hear nothing. Any help?

• NYC Silverlight FireStarter - June 5th 2010 at the NYC Microsoft Office

  On Saturday June 5th, 2010, I spent my Saturday morning at the NYC Silverlight FireStarter. Presenting was Peter Laudati from Microsoft and Jason Beres, Matt Van Horn and Todd Snyder from Infragistics. I watched the Simulcast for the morning sessions as I was tied up with some work, but ended up finally making it to the Microsoft Office and had the opportunity to attend the last hour of the event in person.   For me, the quality of the Simulcast was as good as in-person attendance so far as sound/video quality and the interaction with speakers. In the background was a screen with tweets from remote attendees asking questions or commenting on the presentations. Presenters did periodically stop to answer the tweeted questions as well as questions from attendees. Only thing I missed was getting my hands on some of that swag that was (literally) flying in the air at the event floor.   Upon my arrival at the Microsoft Office Location in NYC, I spoke with Rachel Appel and Peter Laudati asking for permission to take a few photos to record the outstanding effort that took place in putting this event together. Both agreed and I started with putting my photography skills to work.   You can always gauge the quality of an event with the number of its attendees who opt to stay till the last minute as well as the level of interaction of the audience with the speaker. With most of the FireStarter attendees remaining till the very end of the talk, and with the many questions that were asked, one can simply judge the event as a success as per my aforementioned criteria.   Evaluation forms were passed around and Peter strongly encouraged the audience to openly speak their mind as they record their comments. I didn't get to submit my evaluation as I was busy recording the event in photos, so here it goes: I believe that lots of hard work was put into making this event a reality. Quality of speakers, topics and level of Geekiness at the event was outstanding.  Overall, aside from a minor issue with Lunch delivery time, this event was of high quality and I am very sure everyone's evaluation will be in line with my analysis of it being a great success.   I am looking to create a similar tunnel effect in COCOS2D (iOS). Could anyone suggest any pointers? ref Video 1 ref Video 2 Till now I have tried with several ring shape sprites with decreasing scale and positioned center to a same point and keeping Z decreasing as well for each smaller sprite. With that, animating it with CCScaleTo and changing the size to 2.0 with animation duration but it does not come anyway near to the tunnel effect shown in the reference. Thanks, sam

• Name resolver doesn't work

  Oh, Hello! Tried to fix name resolution on my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS box using answers read here... no effect at all: Tried to move /etc/resolv.conf link away Tried to change hosts order in /etc/nsswitch.conf Tried to reboot|remove|reconfigure my LinkSys, which is a DHCP server for my network No results. For now, I'm using "reload button" method 'till desired site is open, though if I've misspelled its FQDN. Can anyone advise something else? Cheers, Andrey.

• Does use of simple shaders improve performace/battery life?

  I'm making OpenGL game for Android. Till now i've used only fixed function pipeline, but i'm rendering simple things. Fixed function pipeline includes a lot of stuff i don't need. So i'm thinking about implementing shaders in my game to simplify OpenGL pipeline if it can make better performance. Better performance = better battery life, unless fps is limited by software limit, not hardware power.
