• Ubuntu 12.04 Wireless won't connect with gnome network manager or wicd

  I have an HP Pavilion Slimline s3100n and I cannot for the life of me get the wifi to connect and stay connected in any circumstances with network manager or wicd... I'm pulling my freaking hair out with this, and I can't get a dang thing down AT ALL... switching to wicd didn't work, putting my password in the connections editor didn't work... nothing at all is working... everything that everyone else is saying to me is chinese and I really just want my pc to work... please help... I will provide any information needed to help me with this. just instruct me on how to find that information. Don't pass this question by without helping me please... I'm so frustrated...

• Weird internet connection issue on Ubuntu 14.04

  I have an old Gateway PC with Windows 7 installed alongside the original (XP, I think?). A while ago my friend walked me through and helped me install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside the others because my Win7 was having issues with the display driver (it would unexpectedly crash while trying to watch videos on YouTube or other places). And I can't update it because the original computer settings are for XP or something, not Win7. :( We recently switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. I would have stayed with Ethernet, but somehow the adapter I have wouldn't connect to Comcast's thing during their installation. So I was given a wireless USB adapter. It worked fine, up until the last few days. It's not a problem on Win7 (using it right now). Connection's strong, things load. On Ubuntu though, it SAYS it connects even before I login to my account, but when I login and bring up Firefox, it will load the homepage, and maybe one or two other pages I venture to before suddenly just... endlessly trying to load the page. I would normally go in and manually select 'disconnect' from the connections options menu to refresh/restart it like I've done a few times already. But lately, it won't respond, and then a little while later an error message comes up saying the request timed out/failed. Restarting my computer doesn't help it. The other weird thing is that I've noticed the signal (when it's actually working properly before the last few days) is comparitively weaker than when I'm on Win7. But my location doesn't change. It's the same computer, same connection.

• HP Compaq 2510p wireless disabled by hardware switch

  I have an HP Compaq 2510p laptop running ubuntu 12.04 LTS. ubuntu reports that wireless is disabled by means of a hardware switch. There is a 'soft-key' button on the laptop to control the physical wireless hardware but this does not respond. There is no other button, slider, (fn)+ combination to control the physical wireless hardware. There is no BIOS function to disable wireless (and on XP - previous OS - wireless functioned fine). mike@ubuntu:~$ rfkill list all 0: brcmwl-0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no Running rfkill unblock all doesn't change things and I can see no way to change use from 0: to 1: (if that's even possible - or desirable - in the first place). I have checked for additional drivers and the Broadcom proprietary wireless driver is already installed and has a green light. Essentially, I believe I need to make the HP 'soft-keys' work - or at least the wireless card toggle. Advice gratefully received. Cheers M

• Ubuntu 12.04 wireless disabled even though the direct connectin (thru modem) is working fine

  Need help with my newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 system (dual booting along with Win 7), even thoguh I can use internet using the modem and directly plugging it, the wireless network is disabled and it says firmware missing.   I am using Asus U56E laptop and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8, I am unable to connect to the Wireless. I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated. • Wireless to Wireless Transfer Slow on a Linksys WRT54GL

  The Situation: When I try to transfer a file from one computer to another that are both connected via wireless on a WRT54GL (in a office) with dd-wrt firmware I often get bad speeds. In generally they average around 100 kilobytes a second. Either computer can download via wireless from the Internet at at about 2 megabytes a second. The speed is slow with the transfer of one large file. There are about 20 other wireless networks that the computers can see, so there is a lot of noise, but I don't have the equipment to really monitor the frequencies well. But that still seems pretty slow. I thought maybe it was the transmit on each card, but even when they are 5 feet away with a line of sight I still get these speeds. According to Linux both cards are operating at 54g. My Questions: Is this normal for this sort of consumer level wireless equipment? Anything I can do to improve it? why is wireless to wireless transfer slow when everything else isn't? Whats steps might I take to figure out what is happening? For example, are lots of packets not making to the access point requiring retransmissions? Above all, I want to find out what the problem actually is. This may seem odd, but at this point I am more interested in understanding what the problem is than fixing it. What I have tried: I have tried messing with lots of settings. Different channels, xmit power, G-Only, none of which has made anything any better. I've also tried upgrading to newer dd-wrt firmware version and doing a reset to wipe out the settings.

• Using a Linksys Wireless- G Broadband Router for a Wireless Antenna/Adapter?

  (Warning: I'm not too computer-smart). Just moved fm a home where I used ATT DSL to a home w/ Comcast Cable for internet. Old home had the DSL ethernet wired to my only desktop w/ a 2Wire router for my wireless signal for the laptops. In the new home the signal comes fm cable via a Netgear(300) wireless router (remotely located) & works fine for my laptops. After searching with the network software, my desktop (can't be ethernet wired cuz of location) detects no wireless signal. Desktop is a 2 yr old HP p6311f Pavilion (Windows 7). Can't seem to detect any wireless hardware (ant/adaptr). Maybe I don't have the ability & need to buy a USB wireless antenna? Would the Pavilion come w/ wireless capability out of the box, maybe something inside the tower? No antenna on back. I happen to have a Linksys Wireless router which I plugged in to the desktop (trying both internet & shared ports) & noticed signal action on the router front panel. No internet on desktop though. Can I use this as an antenna for the desktop? Thanks & sorry if my solution is an easy one I'm just missing. Just want internet on the desktop.

• Asus Eee PC 1000HE wireless woes

  Ever since I have upgraded my Asus Eee PC 1000HE from Lucid 10.04 to Precise 12.04 I have been having issues with my wireless connections. At first I had wireless dropouts: I would be able to start using wireless, but then after a few minutes the wireless would stop working even though I was still connected to the network. Lately things turned worse: while I connect to my wireless network, it just never works. I tried all sorts of solutions on offer here and in other forums but none worked. At best I got the wireless to work up until I rebooted, at which point I would get the same symptoms again: the wireless network is there, but it's not really working. By now I tried so many different "solutions" I don't know where to start describing them; I have also reinstalled 12.04 several times, enough to make me lose faith in Ubuntu. Help here looks like my last resort. For the record, my Asus Eee PC 1000HE is equipped with an Atheros wireless card. • broadcom 43225 wireless on acer laptop is disabled

  I have a acer aspire 5820T with a broadcom 43225 wireless card. I previously used ubuntu 10.10 and the wireless worked straight away, but when I updated to 11.04 the wireless stopped working. I have managed to get the wireless hardware to switch on for a couple of seconds before turning off (When you turn the wireless on using the manual switch the wireless light stays on for a couple of seconds and in the drop down connections menu the information under wireless networks changes from 'device not ready' to 'Disconnected' but shows no wireless networks despite there being one). So far I have tried installing an additional driver, and also disabling the additional driver and installing b43-fwcutter and firmware b43 installer. There may have been other things that I've found in searches that i've tried but unfortunately I can't remember them. Any help would be appreciated.

• Looking for home networking hardware and software advice

  Note: I originally wrote this up in a blog post. I've removed any affiliate links that I put in my original post to ensure I don't annoy anybody. I've recently moved home and I now need to go to the trouble of sorting out my home network yet again. We had Virgin broadband in Hertford but you can't get Virgin in the street we've moved to so I've had to go with O2 Broadband. Normally I prefer to use my own hardward, and previously used the DLink DIR-655 router which was great, but in this situation I am using the O2 Wirelss Box III since I only have an old Netgear DG834PN Wireless G modem router and I'd rather be using Wireless N. Anyway, the place we have moved into has only one phone point in the hallway, has the best TV point in one room and the best place to put the TV and other entertainment stuff in yet another room. So, networking the house up for Internet and TV is required. The diagram below shows the things that I'll have in my home network but there are three points where I'm not quite sure what hardware to us. Wireless Access Point/Bridge, that acts only as a wireless to wire bridge and not an AP, that links up a Media Centre/PC and a couple of consoles to the network. I'm pretty much settled on us an Acer Aspire Revo R3600 as my media PC, probably with Ubuntu or Windows and XBMC installed.   I am using a netgear wireless router to connect to create a wireless network. When connected to the router via an Ethernet cable everything works correctly. When connecting to the router via wireless only Google can be accessed. I've done searches via Google using random words to make sure that it is not a cached page, and these all work. However, trying to connect to any non Google domain the page fails to load. I've accessed the connection with two different laptops, both are running Windows Vista. The network connection is strong on both, but the issue persists for both. Edit: I have configured the wireless networks name and password, and connect to that using the credentials I have defined. I am sure I am not connecting to a neighbors wireless network. Edit2: Typing in the direct IP address for CNN.com ( http://157.166.255.19 ) would not resolve.

  I have had a look through all the related questions and I get the feeling my problem is unique. My wireless connection disconnects every 30 minutes, for maybe 1 to 3 seconds. If I am browsing the web while it happens, I get the page cannot be displayed error message. I have checked the event logs as I was curious to know if there was anything in there. There is. Event 8033: BROWSER - The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{B919CC30-25A9-45DD-A09F-549A6262FC9E} because a master browser was stopped. Reported exactly every 30 minutes which coincides with my wireless problem. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit. My wireless is Realtek RTL8187 integrated into a ASUS P5K-E/Wifi motherboard. It is on a workgroup and has never been on a domain. This problem does not affect any other computers. Wireless reception is great, and I have ensured that the wireless unit is transmitting on a frequency not used by any nearby wireless basestations. How can I fix this pesky problem?

• Ubuntu 12.10, Wireless not working

  My Laptop is Acer 5742G with "Npilfy 802.11 wireless". I have both windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 Earlier when I had Ubuntu 12.04, the wireless was working fine, but after installing 12.10 wireless is not working at all, although it is still working in windows. I am not able to see "Wireless Networks" in the Network Manager nor in the Network Settings.
