  • Mac keyboard shortcut to rm file

    What's the Mac keyboard shortcut to rm a file? I know command + delete sends it to trash, but I want to permanently delete it, say with command + fn + delete. UPDATE: It doesn't look like there is one. So, I want to create a service with Automator and then assign a keyboard shortcut to it from System Preferences. I can get to Automator - Service - Service receives selected files or folders in Finder.app, but how do I write the script that then runs rm -rf #{file/folder name}?

  • KVM in Ubuntu cannot trap Windows7 keyboard shortcut

    I am running Windows7 as a guest OS inside KVM running in Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 Everytime I do Alt+Tab within Windows7, the shortcut is caught by Ubuntu. How can I 'trap' the shortcut to stay within the guest OS? I tried running the guest OS fullscreen but Alt+Tab still escapes. Running guest OS fullscreen with display scaled up seems to trap Alt+Tab within KVM, but somehow guest OS is running very very slowly in that mode. Any idea?

  • Photoshop CS6 - spacebar shortcut for hand tool has stopped working

    In Photoshop CS6, the default behavior of depressing the spacebar as a shortcut for the Hand tool was working as expected, then stopped for no apparent reason. I have rebooted, closed browsers, shut down all other applications and deleted preferences and the problem persists. The spacebar works properly elsewhere, including Photoshop CS4. Is there a keyboard shortcut setting I'm missing (I've checked Edit - Keyboard Shortcuts and can find nothing for the spacebar, and can not add it to the Hand tool). This is on OSX Lion 10.7.4

  • What are those white circles on the desktop in Gnome 3?

    I have Fedora 20 with GNOME 3.10.2. On the desktop background (i.e. where the wallpaper is), there are five small white circles centered at the very bottom of the screen. The first is filled, the others are not. I can click those circles, thereby changing which one is filled, like a radio button. I cannot for the life of me figure out what those circles are supposed to do, and it's starting to drive me crazy. Clicking and thus changing which circle is filled does nothing I can perceive, and there seems to be no configuration option anywhere that has anything to do with them. What are those things? Is there any way to get rid of them? Edit: I made a screenshot of my desktop with no programs running. You can see the dot/circle thingies at the bottom.   • Unable to change keyboard shortcut

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with KDE. I'm trying to setup my desktops with shortcuts alt+1 for desktop 1 and alt+2 for desktop 2 etc. The problem is that Page Settings refuses to change to the desired shortcut and gives no message as to why. When I press the alt key I see "Alt+" appear in the the box but when I add 1 it reverts back to "Input". Why won't KDE let me change the keyboard shortcut and what can I do to solve the problem?

  • Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

    Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

  • Why would Remote Assistance work but not Remote Desktop?

    I have managed to get Remote Assistance working between two XP-Pro machines, but as soon as I try Remote Desktop I can't even get to the login screen without an error which gives a list of possibilities and concludes with "See your network administrator", which isn't very helpful. I have ramped up the security level on Remote Desktop including turning on encryption etc. Could this be the problem? I will only get a few hours on the machine at a time so I need to be well-prepared before I attack this problem again. Any ideas?

    I'm having trouble setting a keyboard shortcut in Ubuntu. Trying to use the win (super) key as a modifier, but as soon as I press the win key the keyboard shortcut UI just assumes I wanted to use just that key. I figure the easiest thing would be to modify the settings file itself, where I should be able to put in whatever I want. But I can't figure out where that's stored. Does anyone know?

  • Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

    I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

    I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating. The only solution is to restart the machine. Some specs if it helps. HP 3000 Pro Windows 7 Pro 64 bit ATI Radeon HD 4550 Samsung SyncMaster 2243 x2

    I'm running Windows 7 and would like to use remote desktop to connect to my home computer. As such i want to enable password security for remote desktop, but I do not want to have to enter a password to log into my computer if i'm physically at my computer. Is there any way to do this? I am an administrator user and I want to have the same icons and configuration regardless of if i log in remotely or locally but i want only the remote connection to require a password. I read about being able to do something similar by adding another user account, but is there any way to do it so that the same icons and settings take affect regardless of how i log in? Thanks.

    I usually connect to other PCs in the same building using Remote Desktop, which works great. For some reason, some actions cannot be performed through Remote Desktop. These are, for example: Installation of certain software Accessing the directory of a DVD (that is inserted at the remote computers drive) several other tasks that just "don't react or start", unless you do the same thing without RDP All these actions work with any other remote access tool, like VNC, Teamviewer, LogMeIn, etc. My question is: What is the difference when I use a computer through RDP instead of directly? Is there a list of prohibited actions available so that one could know upfront if something can be done with RDP or not?

    My Windows7-german-64bit installation worked fine until today. But this morning I have suddenly lost all my desktop icons. I can re-enable the icons via right-click on desktop > Ansicht > Desktop Symbole anzeigen) (translation: right-click on desktop > View > Show Desktop Icons) But on logoff/logon the icons are lost again! Any help is very appreciated!

    I'm using my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad T60) and I have a secondary monitor (which has a different resolution than my laptop screen) connected by VGA. Kubuntu recognizes the monitor and it functions but my desktop is mirrored (i.e. an identical copy) across the dual monitors (which is useless to me). How can I extend my desktop across both monitors? P.S. I googled it but the solutions I found weren't standard, they were hardware specific and you had to manually change system files, etc..     I have a mid-2008 workstation with two HD monitors supporting HDMI and DVI inputs. Since Ubuntu 11.10, I have experienced no end of trouble with my NVidia Quadro NVS 290 in TwinView dual-monitor output. Others have similar desktop TwinView woes. I want a new graphics card. Previously I asked for a graphics card recommendation and response was Nvidia Geforce GTS 450... but really I'm looking for someone who has actually got a working dual-monitor desktop to tell me what card they use so I can get something that is known to work. So please, people who have no-issues with their 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 Unity 3D desktop spread across two HD-resolution external monitors (either DVI or HDMI connector), and who also run Google Chrome (which throws a spanner due to its own GPU compositing)... please let me know what graphics card you have so I can buy one. Gathering Options These seem to be the Nvidia cards featuring dual DVI. But they all seem to be gaming cards - what has dual-DVI, good support, but is not a massive gaming card? Nvidia GTS 450 (previously recommended) - 2x DVI Nvidia GTX 550 Ti (used by System76) - 2x DVI Nvidia GT 430 (used by System76) - 1xDVI, 1xHDMI Nvidia GT 640 (found on NVidia site) - 1xDVI, 1xHDMI (also GT 620, GT 630) Has anyone had a good desktop dual-monitor Unity 3D experience with ATI cards?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 desktop, VNC viewer not refreshing screen

    I've had this issues across multiple machines and multiple versions of Ubuntu desktop (all 10.04 or later). Usually it happens with an old laptop I've put Ubuntu on but now it's happening on my primary dev machine (a quad-core PC recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 desktop). The problem is this - I can connect to the machine and login with the password, the initial screen looks fine but never refreshes. I can see the monitor for the machine across the room and can see the mouse move and the menus pop up but the image of the screen on the PC in front me running the VNC viewer never updates. So the mouse and keyboard commands are working. Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop Ultra VNC Viewer (also seen with RealVNC's free VNC viewer) Desktop Sharing Static IP on eth0; Dynamic ID on eth1 I think it is an Ubuntu config issue because this PC used to work just fine with 9.04, 10.04, and 11.10 (over the past couple of years). I've also had a couple of laptops that used to have this issue with older Ubuntu's but don't with 12.04. Additional info: The Win7 PC I'm trying to use to control the Ubuntu PC is connected via 2 DLink 8-port gigabit routers. The Ubuntu laptop I usually control via VNC is typically only connected to the network via wireless. The screen refresh is choppy but usable. I've repeated the issue on a Win7 laptop which was connected via ethernet and wireless.

    How can I find out which keyboard shortcuts are defined inside the Start menu? And what shortcuts they are assigned to? Platform: Windows XP SP2 64 bit. Example: I open my main Visual Studio solution with a shortcut key, Ctrl+Alt+M. This is setup by having a shortcut inside the Start menu with: Target: "D:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" D:\dproj\MSQall\MSQuant\MSQuant.sln Shortcut key: Ctrl+ALT+M If a new shortcut is added and its shortcut key is also set to Ctrl+Alt+M then there are now two shortcuts with the same shortcut key (conflict). To prevent this it would be nice to know which shortcut keys are already assigned and to which shortcuts.
