  If having installed some packages downloaded from website , I was wondering if it is possible to have auto notification when its update is available, just as those packages in Ubuntu repositories. Can the packages downloaded be in deb form, or even in source code? • Paypal "Subscribe" button: Is it possible to let the subscriber set the amount?

I'd like to have two options: Option 1 (for individuals): Fixed $6/mo subscription Option 2 (for organizations): A subscription where the amount is set by the subscriber PayPal's "Subscribe" button does not seem to allow that: When I leave the "Amount" field of the 2nd option empty, I get an error: So, is this not possible? • Two hosting providers running simultaneously... possible / not possible? good practice / unnecessary?

  For the sake of their reputation, I won't mention the names. But I'll just use: Business I worked for previously - ABC Web Dev Hosting company they used - XYZ Hosting I recently found out that XYZ Hosting had some sort of incident where they ended up losing a lot of their client's data - including ABC Web Dev's. ABC Web Dev was able to recover some of their customer's websites, after pulling them from their local development computers and putting them up on another hosting provider. They ended up losing a lot of clients because of it and their reputation ruined. I'm starting my own web dev company and I don't want to run into this same issue. I'm planning on using Rackspace but, although they are a great company, according to wikipedia they still have had downtime in their past. I thought it might be a good idea to try to run two providers at once, to ensure that if anything happened in one the websites would still be live because of the other. I know the websites would have to be pulling from one server at all times, but if there's a way to redirect requests to the second server if the first one is down that would solve my issue. As a note, we will have a staging environment setup locally which will allow for quick recovery if a provider did have any issues, however I'd like to avoid any downtime at all if possible. So my questions are: Has anyone tried running two providers simultaneously? Would this be considered good practice or am I going too far? Is there really any way to run two simultaneously where one server acts as a backup?

  I recently started trying Ubuntu One music streaming and now it feels good. However I have a problem here: I used to have several long playlists for myself in Rhythmbox (300-500 songs each playlist, in my favored order), and I really liked to play songs from the playlist instead of shuffling all songs. So, I wonder if I can upload my playlist to Ubuntu One music, or make a same playlist on Ubuntu One Music without dragging songs one by one. Is it possible to do this in Rhythmbox or do it by uploading some m3u playlist file? Or maybe some other method? Please suggest me any method that can "copy" my playlist to Ubuntu One music. • Is finding graph minors without single node pinch points possible?

  Is it possible to robustly find all the graph minors within an arbitrary node graph where the pinch points are generally not single nodes? I have read some other posts on here about how to break up your graph into a Hamiltonian cycle and then from that find the graph minors but it seems to be such an algorithm would require that each "room" had "doorways" consisting of single nodes. To explain a bit more a visual aid is necessary. Lets say the nodes below are an example of the typical node graph. What I am looking for is a way to automatically find the different colored regions of the graph (or graph minors)

• Possible to set equal height for divs in pairs but only if browser width 960 or wider?

  I'm working on a responsive site where I've found that I've got pairs of divs with heights that I would like to be equal, but only if the browser width is equal to or greater than 960px. Any smaller than that and the divs stack so different heights do not make a difference. DIV 1 | DIV 2 DIV 3 | DIV 4 DIV 5 | DIV 6 DIV 7 | DIV 8 Based on the above set up, Div 1 and Div 2 need to be equal height as do Div 3 and Div 4, but both pairs do not need to be equal to each other. i.e. the pair sets can have different heights but each pair must be equal. Is this possible and if so what is the best approach to take? My javascript/jQuery is rather elementary. I'm sure I could do equal heights alone, but with the pair sets I'm not sure and then adding in the need to set this to only happen if the browser is 960 or wider and I'm lost.

I have installed CS3 and 4 master collection on windows and with wine on ubuntu can't run it (yes, no registry entries added to the wine!) I can copy all the needed file to the /home/prasad/.wine/dosdevices/C: directory with hidden files included, but how to add registry entries to them? (windows registry editor like thing to wine) is it possible to make illustrator run in ubuntu like that, i tried to install Master collection but it failed number of times. I use ubuntu 10.10

P.S.: I'm betting a set of tools won't cover ALL of them, and that there will still be some kind of "translating" effort for some platforms, but we'd like to know what the most far reaching are.

• Is it possible to get the old workspaceswitcher back in the top-panel?

  I just updated my Ubuntu from 10.04 to 12.04 yesterday and so far I'm very satisfied with it. There is only one thing which is still missing to get back just the same comfort as I had with the previous version. I work on 4 workspaces and would like to have the ability to switch from one to another by just one click. With Gnome there was the possibility to add the workspace switcher to the top-panel next to the system tray and I could easily click on just the workspace I wanted to switch to. Of course there I could switch by using the keyboard shortcuts, but I would like to use the mouse in addition. I don't like using the switcher on the left side because it's much slower. Is it possible to get the old workplace switcher back in the panel at the top?

• Is it possible to allow the user to access the 'Volumes' without asking the Administrator's password?

  Am the administrator of my Ubuntu system. Recently I added a new user account. But when ever the user tries to access or open the 'Volumes'(Drives where movies, songs and other files are stored) it asks for the Administrator's password. I created the user account to my other family members and I don't want to tell them my password. So is it possible to allow them to access the Volumes without asking Administrator's password ? • Is it possible to hide some topics in phpBB forum?

  I would like to be able to hide some of the topics in a phpBB-based forum temporarily from the users - perhaps with the exception of administrators and moderators. I am using the forum for my students and I have solutions of some problems from exams and tests there - posted either by me or by some of the students. I plan to use the same or very similar problems during the next academic year. So I don't want the students to see them, but I want to make the solutions visible again after the tests; so that I do not have to post solutions to same questions again. Is something like this possible? Is this a standard part of phpBB, or do I need to install some modification(s) for it?

• Is it possible to preview arbitrary formats in Nautilus?

  I recently found out that Nautilus (Ubuntu 12.04 at least) can show thumbnails of files of non-image formats, for example (data grapher) grace files (.agr) shows a small version of the graph contained in its data. Obviously, there some library or script that is processing the file, making the image, and allowing nautilus to show a small version of it. This made me think that in principle any file that potentially can be processed into an image can serve as a Nautilus thumbnail. For example, a .tex file (which can be converted to .pdf) or a gnuplot script can be displayed as a thumbnail when possible. In the case of .tex file, the correspoding .pdf can be created by the command pdflatex file.tex. The question is, how can I tell Nautilus to create a thumbnail for an arbitrary format and how do I specify the commands to do so within Nautilus?

• Is it possible to stream music/video from an Apache server?

  I'm just starting to get into setting up a server. I've set up a basic Apache server to access some songs and movies. When I click one of the songs though, nothing happens. When I click one of the movies, sometimes it will open a new web page and act as though it is going to start playing, but never does. I know Apache is HTTP, not FTP and read somewhere that that could be a problem, but I'm uncertain of the differences. Anyway, is it possible to click on one of the songs and have it start streaming using, for example, Windows Media Player? If so, might someone either explain how to do so or direct me to where I can find it? Any information on retrieving media from an Apache server at this point would be most appreciated. -Edit- I don't know if it matters, but I'm using Windows 7 and Google Chrome

• What is the term that means "keeping the arguments for different API calls as similar as possible"?

  There is a word which I can never remember... it expresses a design goal that API calls (or functions or methods or whatever) should be as similar as reasonably possible in their argument patterns. It may also extend to naming as well. In other words, all other things being equal, it is probably bad to have these three functions: deleteUser(email) petRemove(petId,species) destroyPlanet(planetName,starName) if instead you could have deleteUser(userId) deletePet(petId) deletePlanet(planetId) What is the word for this concept? I keep thinking it's "orthogonal" but it definitely isn't. Its a very important concept, and to me it's one of the biggest things that makes some APIs a joy to work with (because once you learn a few things you can pretty much use everything without looking at doco), and others a pain (because every function is done inconsistently).
