  • .net developers and web designers: how to interact?

    I'm an asp.net developer, and I face some problems when I deal with designers. The designer always complains about the asp.net server controls. They rather just have an html file and create css files along with the required images to go with those. Sometimes if the design phase is done in advance I get html files with related css files, but then we face many problems integrating the design with the aspx files (sever controls an telerik controls ... etc). What I want to ask about is: How to overcome these problems? The designers prefer php- and mvc developers because of the problems with .net server controls. I need to know how to interact with the designers in a correct way. Are there any tools or applications to provide the designers with the rendered (html page) of the .aspx pages? By that I mean the page in runtime rather than the aspx in visual studio. They do use Web Expression but they want the rendered page in html as well.

    Microsoft has just released SQL Server 2012 Upgrade Technical Guide. This guide is very comprehensive and covers the subject of upgrade in-depth. This is indeed a helpful detailed white paper. Even writing a summary of this white paper would take over 100 pages. This further proves that SQL Server 2012 is quite an important release from Microsoft. This white paper discusses how to upgrade from SQL Server 2008/R2 to SQL Server 2012. I love how it starts with the most interesting and basic discussion of upgrade strategies: 1) In-place upgrades, 2) Side by side upgrade, 3) One-server, and 4) Two-server. This whitepaper is not just pure theory but is also an excellent source for some tips and tricks. Here is an example of a good tip from the paper: “If you want to upgrade just one database from a legacy instance of SQL Server and not upgrade the other databases on the server, use the side-by-side upgrade method instead of the in-place method.” There are so many trivia, tips and tricks that make creating the list seems humanly impossible given a short period of time. My friend Vinod Kumar, an SQL Server expert, wrote a very interesting article on SQL Server 2012 Upgrade before. In that article, Vinod addressed the most interesting and practical questions related to upgrades. He started with the fundamentals of how to start backup before upgrade and ended with fail-safe strategies after the upgrade is over.   • How To Get Web Site Thumbnail Image In ASP.NET

    Overview One very common requirement of many web applications is to display a thumbnail image of a web site. A typical example is to provide a link to a dynamic website displaying its current thumbnail image, or displaying images of websites with their links as a result of search (I love to see it on Google). Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 makes it quite easier to do it in a ASP.NET application. Background In order to generate image of a web page, first we need to load the web page to get their html code, and then this html needs to be rendered in a web browser. After that, a screen shot can be taken easily. I think there is no easier way to do this. Before .NET framework 2.0 it was quite difficult to use a web browser in C# or VB.NET because we either have to use COM+ interoperability or third party controls which becomes headache later. WebBrowser control in .NET framework 2.0 In .NET framework 2.0 we have a new Windows Forms WebBrowser control which is a wrapper around old shwdoc.dll. All you really need to do is to drop a WebBrowser control from your Toolbox on your form in .NET framework 2.0. If you have not used WebBrowser control yet, it's quite easy to use and very consistent with other Windows Forms controls. Some important methods of WebBrowser control are. public bool GoBack(); public bool GoForward(); public void GoHome(); public void GoSearch(); public void Navigate(Uri url); public void DrawToBitmap(Bitmap bitmap, Rectangle targetBounds); These methods are self explanatory with their names like Navigate function which redirects browser to provided URL. It also has a number of useful overloads. The DrawToBitmap (inherited from Control) draws the current image of WebBrowser to the provided bitmap. Using WebBrowser control in ASP.NET 2.0 The Solution Let's start to implement the solution which we discussed above. First we will define a static method to get the web site thumbnail image. public static Bitmap GetWebSiteThumbnail(string Url, int BrowserWidth, int BrowserHeight, int ThumbnailWidth, int ThumbnailHeight) { WebsiteThumbnailImage thumbnailGenerator = new WebsiteThumbnailImage(Url, BrowserWidth, BrowserHeight, ThumbnailWidth, ThumbnailHeight); return thumbnailGenerator.GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage(); } The WebsiteThumbnailImage class will have a public method named GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage which will generate the website thumbnail image in a separate STA thread and wait for the thread to exit. In this case, I decided to Join method of Thread class to block the initial calling thread until the bitmap is actually available, and then return the generated web site thumbnail. public Bitmap GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage() { Thread m_thread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(_GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage)); m_thread.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA); m_thread.Start(); m_thread.Join(); return m_Bitmap; } The _GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage will create a WebBrowser control object and navigate to the provided Url. We also register for the DocumentCompleted event of the web browser control to take screen shot of the web page. To pass the flow to the other controls we need to perform a method call to Application.DoEvents(); and wait for the completion of the navigation until the browser state changes to Complete in a loop. private void _GenerateWebSiteThumbnailImage() { WebBrowser m_WebBrowser = new WebBrowser(); m_WebBrowser.ScrollBarsEnabled = false; m_WebBrowser.Navigate(m_Url); m_WebBrowser.DocumentCompleted += new WebBrowserDocument CompletedEventHandler(WebBrowser_DocumentCompleted); while (m_WebBrowser.ReadyState != WebBrowserReadyState.Complete) Application.DoEvents(); m_WebBrowser.Dispose(); } The DocumentCompleted event will be fired when the navigation is completed and the browser is ready for screen shot. We will get screen shot using DrawToBitmap method as described previously which will return the bitmap of the web browser.   • Horizontally align rows in multiple tables using web user control

    I need to align rows in different tables that are layed out horizontally. I'd prefer to put the html code in a single web user control so I can create as many instances of that control as I want and lay them out horizontally. The problem is, the text in the rows needs to wrap. So some rows may expand vertically and some may not (see the example below). When that happens, the rows in the other tables aren't aligned horizontally. I know I can accomplish all this by using a single table, but that would mean I'd have to duplicate the name, address and phone html code instead of dynamically creating new instances of my user control (in reality there are many more fields than this, but I'm keeping it simple). Is there any way to do this whether with div's, tables or something else? Here's the problem: Mary Jane's address field expands 2 lines, causing her phone field to not align properly with John's and Bob's. Name: John Doe Name: Mary Jane Name: Bob Smith Address: 123 broadway Address: Some really long address Address: Short address Phone: 123-456 that takes up multiple lines Phone: 111-2222 Phone: 456-789 I'm not restricted in any way how to do this (other than using asp.net), but I'd prefer to use a single web control that I instantiate X times at design time (in this example, it's 3 times).   • Can't upgrade Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

    So today was RTM of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials released. I immediately tried to do an in-place upgrade of an existing RTM 2012 Essentials to RTM 2012 R2 Essentials, but get: Windows Server 2012 Essentials cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. This seems a bit odd, is this really the case? I can't find anything in the official documentation stating that this upgrade isn't possible.

  • .net web service: Can't add service reference, only web reference

    I have an existing project that consumes web services. One was added as a service reference, and the other as a web reference. I don't recall why one was added as a web reference, but perhaps it's because I couldn't get it to work! The existing service reference for the one web service works fine, so it's not a .net version issue. I can successfully create a service reference for the second web service, but none of the methods are available. The .wsdl shows the schema, but the Reference.vb shows only the Namespace, and none of the methods. To clarify, these are two different 3rd party web service providers. We'd like to move to the service reference so we have more control over the configuration as we're having various issues with timeouts. Anyone come across this before? Edit Does it matter that there are two services at the address?

    Trying to build an Exchange server solution for a company and they want me to look into licensing for Windows. I'm going to be purchasing the necessary server licenses for Windows Server 2012 Standard and Microsoft Exchange 2013 Enterprise. I just have a few questions about the CAL's thing which seems like a complete ripoff to me. How are CAL's tracked for both Windows Server and Exchange? Is it tied to Active Directory profiles? What happens if I dont have the necessary CAL's for Windows Server? Will a client be denied access from Active Directory? Is there any enforcement for this? Also the same question for Exchange 2013 CAL's Thanks

  • How to learn high-level Java web development concepts

    I have some experience writing web applications in Java for class projects. My first project used Servlets and my second, the Stripes framework. However, I feel that I am missing the greater picture of Java web development. I don't really understand the web.xml and context.xml files. I'm not sure what constitutes a Java EE application as opposed to a generic Java web application. I can't figure out how a bean is different from an ordinary Java class (POJO?) and how that differs from an Enterprise Java Bean (EJB). These are just the first few questions I could think of, but there are many more. What is a good way to learn how Java web applications function from the top down rather than simply how to develop an application with a specific framework? (Is there a book for this sort of thing?) Ultimately, I would like to understand Java web applications well enough to write my own framework.

After doing some initial testing we've decided to create Windows Active Directory groups that mimic the security roles of the application (i.e. Administrators, Managers, Users/Operators, etc...) We've created mapped logins in SQL Server to these groups and given them access to the database for the application. In addition, we've created SQL Server database roles and assigned each group the appropriate role. This is working great. My issue revolves around that for most of the applications, everyone in the company should have read access to the reports (and hence the data). As far as I can tell, I have 2 options: 1) Create a read-only/viewer AD group and put everyone in it. 2) Use the "domain\domain users" group(s) and assign them the correct roles in SQL. What is the best and/or easiest way to allow everyone read access to specific database objects using a Windows-only Authentication method?

  • cloning mac address of physical server converted into vmware server

    We've recently converted a physical Windows Server 2003 into vmware using P2V. However, one of the pieces of software on the 2003 machine are still looking for the old server's network MAC address in order to run. I've read several articles where it's discussed that you can modify the last part of the generated address and set it to static, but I need to clone the whole mac address to mimic the one in the old server. We're running CentOS and VMware server 2.0 as the host system. I was told that maybe adding in a second network card in the host and setting the virtual system's nic to that card instead of "bridged" would allow me to edit the vmx file and clone the whole MAC address. I can't use the old network card from the physical server because it's ISA and our new bus is PCI Any ideas? Thanks, Mike

  • Virtualbox PXE Boot Failing with a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server

    Some fast help on this would be good, I have been on this problem for 14 hours. In a Virtualbox test environment I have 2 virtual machines networked together using a internal network (no traffic runs though the host, it is all at a software level). One is a fresh client with 512mb of ram and a dual core set-up, the other is the server with 1.5GB of ram and running server 2008 r2. The server is configured as a dns server, dchp server, domain controller and also serves PXE booting though WDS (Windows Deployment Services). Both machines can see each other and I am able to start a network boot. The issue comes at the second to last stage of the pre windows PE install. On TFTP download of boot.sdi it starts it but stops during the boot process.

  • How to backup/restore OSX Parental Controls before/after complete reimage?

    We typically "nuke and pave" users Mac OSX laptops if they have software issue. Prior to doing so, we backup the primary (non-admin) user's home folder. Our standard image has four accounts: Admin (uber admin user); Parent (admin account for the parents of students); Loaner (so our standard image will also work for our loaner laptop pool); Student (this is the primary, non-admin user of the laptop) Our standard image has only minimal Parental controls on the Loaner and Student accounts. Some parents choose to tighten the parental controls. We never know when parents have made changes to parental controls, or what those changes are. Once we have reimaged the machine with our standard image (minimal parental controls) we would like to be able to restore any custom parental controls parents may have placed on their student's account. Any help in this would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • MS Word reports files read-only on Win Server 2003 file server

    I'm not a sysadmin, but I play one on TV: I'm trying to fix a problem for my mom's tiny non-profit company's server. I set up a Windows Server 2003 machine as a domain controller and file server. Everything has been working well for a few months, but lately when she tries to save changes to a Word (Office XP) document stored on the server, Word will intermittently report that the file is read-only. Saving to an alternate file in the same directory works, and when she closes Word and re-opens the original document, it'll save changes just fine. No one else ever has these files open. I've checked security and share permissions, and everything's OK. We've tried rebooting the server, but the problem continues, but intermittently. I have no clue what's going on. Help!

  • Efficiently making web pages from multiple servers

    I want to create a service that allows diverse web site owners to integrate material from my web servers into content served from their own servers. Ideally the resulting web page would only be delivered from the web site owners server, and the included content would be viewed as being part of the site by Google - which I think would rule out iframes or client-side Javascript to get the content from my server (although I may be wrong about that?). Also the data wouldn't actually be updated that often, say once a day, so it would be inefficient to get the data from my web servers with every request. Finally, the method needs to be as simple as possible so that it is easy for web site owners to integrate into their own sites. Are there any good methods for doing this sort of thing? If not then I guess the simple way is with iframes or Javascript.

  • How to restrict access to my web service?

    I have http://example.com/index.html, which from within the HTML uses JavaScript to call a web services at http://example.com/json/?a=...&b=... The web service returns to index.html a JSON array of information to then be displayed on index.html. Since anyone can view the source code for index.html and see how I'm calling the JSON web services (http://example.com/json/), how do I prevent people from calling my JSON web service directly? Since the web service is essentially an open read into my database, I don't want people to abuse the web service and start DoS my server, fetching more information than they should, etc..

  • How popular is C++ for making websites/web applications?

    I don't know why this is question is bugging me, but time after time I come back to the though - why not make websites in C++? So far I know of none (except a rumor about Yahoo). Most use PHP, Java or ASP.NET. Some are built on Ruby or Python, but even those are minorities. At the same time, looking at StackOverflow, it seems that C++ is still a very popular language with many projects written in it. Why not for webpages? So - what do you know about this subject? Are there any websites written in C++? Are there any framewroks/libraries that help doing this? Have YOU ever done it? If yes, did you run into any fundamental problems and would you recommend this to others?

  • How can I launch RemoteApp on Windows Server from server itself at startup

The app is started as RemoteApp on server by user from his desktop computer (or, sometimes, he can work from notebook over VPN). Some details about environment: the server automatically shuts down every evening and automatically power-on every morning (this is a requirement) desktop application do some precalculations/precaching on startup and it can take lot of time mentioned application have some memory leaks, so I can't use hibernate instead of shutdown When user launching this app from his computer, he can't start work with it until this app finishes pre-initialization. Is there any way to start RemoteApp session at the server startup (without actual user logon), so that the user could connect to this session from his computer later? I don't want to involve the user's computer to make it work. I have tried to do it by Windows startup script, but have no luck - starting RDP session requires actual user session.

    Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.
