    I often want to do a "quick check" of the value of a large text column in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). The maximum number of characters that SSMS will let you view, in grid results mode, is 65535. (It is even less in text results mode.) Sometimes I need to see something beyond that range. Using SQL Server 2005 databases, I often used the trick of converting it to XML, because SSMS lets you view much larger amounts of text that way: SELECT CONVERT(xml, MyCol) FROM MyTable WHERE ... But now I am using SQL CE, and there is no Xml data type. There is still a "Maximum Characters Retreived XML" value under Options; I suppose this is useful when connecting to other data sources. I know I can just get the full value by running a little console app or something, but is there a way within SSMS to see the entire ntext column value? [Edit] OK, this didn't get much attention the first time around (18 views?!). It's not a huge concern, but maybe I'm just obsessed with it. There has to be some good way around this, doesn't there? So a modest bounty is active. What I am willing to accept as answers, in order from best-to-worst: A solution that works just as easy as the XML trick in SQL CE. That is, a single function (convert, cast, etc.) that does the job. A not-too-invasive way to hack SSMS to get it to display more text in the results. An equivalent SQL query (perhaps something that creatively uses SUBSTRING and generates multiple ad-hoc columns??) to see the results. The solution should work with nvarchar and ntext columns of any length in SQL CE from SSMS. Any ideas?

  • Sync database with filter using SyncOrchestrator with Sync Framework 2.0

    Hi, I want to synchronize two SQL databases. But since one of the databases only requires a subset of the data I am looking for a filter option. Is there a possibility to add a Filter to the SyncOrchestrator or do I have to add the filter to the SyncProvider? According to this: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/uklaunch2007ado.net/thread/35d4deb8-a861-4fe3-a395-d175e14c353f it is not possible to filter with the DbSyncProvider. Quote: "I understand your scenario, and the hebavior of the DbSyncProvider is due to the current limitation. DbSyncProvider is built on top of the Microsoft Sync Framework that can support filtering. Unfortunately, DbSyncProvider does not yet." But that post is quite old, maybe that has changed now. I am working with this example at the moment: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc807255.aspx but I can't figure out how to add filtering here.

    I am faceing a problem where I need to sort my ContentResolver in a custom order. Take for example Contact Groups, you can define and manage them using Android's data database. But if you query this, you are limited to do order by on the name of the group only or id. In my scenarion I need to sort them in an order (other than alphabetic) that I've stored in my database. Take for example this example: Colleagues Excluded Family Friends But the order I want them to display is: Family Colleagues Friends Excluded So how would you accomplish this task?

    Hi, I have a GridView to which I bind a dataTable I manually create. Both the GridView and the dataTable contain 2 columns, Name and isBusy. My GridView looks like this <Columns> <asp:BoundField HeaderText="Name" DataField="Name" SortExpression="Name"> </asp:BoundField> <asp:CheckBoxField DataField="isBusy" HeaderText="Busy" SortExpression="isBusy" /> </Columns> That works fine, except that the Busy column is non-editable unless you set a specific row to edit mode. I require the entire column of checkboxes to be checkable. So I converted the column to a template, and so the columns look like this: <Columns> <asp:BoundField HeaderText="Name" DataField="Name" SortExpression="Name"> </asp:BoundField> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Busy" SortExpression="isBusy"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:CheckBox ID="isBusy" runat="server" Checked='<%# Eval("isBusy") %>' oncheckedchanged="CheckBoxBusy_CheckedChanged" /> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> </Columns> Now, this throws an error at runtime, saying System.InvalidCastException was unhandled by user code Message="Specified cast is not valid."   • Image map popup on rollover, with popup text drawn from database

    I have a custom map of the USA with about 20 polygonal hot spots. I would like a box to pop up next to each hot spot on hover, with text and links drawn from my DB specific to the location. I would have thought this is a common situation, but I can't find a solution that works. I tried using an asp:imagemap and an ajax popup extender but you can't assign IDs to hotspots and it doesn't support mouseover events. I tried css with an html image map but I can't figure out how to use css solutions with polygonal hot spots, and I also don't know how to link it to get the data from the db without asp targets (I'm not very familiar with jquery, which would work, I am guessing). Anyone know of any simple-ish solutions out there?

  • Flash Player 10.1 crash on shared object access

    Hi all, since updating my Flash Player plugin from 10 to 10.1, I'm seeing a weird crash when accessing shared objects. Flex Builder's debugger pops up and prints a stack trace like this: undefined at flash.net::SharedObject$/getLocal() at my.code::MyClass$/load()[/my/path/to/my/MyClass.as:27] (...) This happens when calling SharedObject.getLocal("someString") for the second time for the same string, though it doesn't always crash. When using another browser on the same machine (not configured as the preferred debugging browser in Flex Builder), Flash Player remains silent. The code is wrapped in a try/catch(Error) block which does not catch this error. I'm using Flex SDK 3.5 and Flex Builder 3 on Mac OS X 10.6.3. Has anyone else seen this? Thanks, Simon

    I'm curious to know if, after a WebSocket has been established (after having received the proper handshake from a server that supports them), whether or not the TCP socket used by the "WebSocket connection" is used exclusively by the WebSocket, or if the browser may still make regular HTTP requests with it. It only makes sense to me that WebSockets would have exclusive use of their TCP sockets, but I don't remember having read in any of the documentation that such is the case.

  • ODBC Connection String Problem

    Hi there, I am having major trouble connecting to my database via ODBC. The db is local (but I have a mirror on a virtual machine), so I am trying to use the connectionstring: Dsn=MonetDB;host=TARBELL where TARBELL is the name of my computer. However, it doesn't connect. BUT, this string does: Dsn=MonetDB;host=localhost as does Dsn=MonetDB Can anyone explain this? I am at a complete loss. I have taken down my firewalls (at least until I get this figured out), so that can't be the problem. I eventually want to change the TARBELL to the mirrored virtual machine running another instance of the database. Many thanks, Brett

    I'm hitting what appears (to me) strange behavior when I pull data from the google datastore over JDO. In particular, the query executes quickly (say 100 ms), but finding the size of the resulting List< takes about one second! Indeed, whatever operation I try to perform on the resulting list takes about a second. Has anybody seen this behavior? Is it expected? Unusual? Any way around it?     Hello all, I am architecting a software project and I want to create a SAAS (Software As a service) one. I want to model my application along the lines of Salesforce. I really like there customization features but I am not sure how they really go about it. I read that they create an ID for every field that is required and then store the corresponding data too. Can anyone guide me as to how this is possible. For example, if I want to store an employee record. 2 fields (firstname, lastname) are already given and the user adds a third field(say DOB), how is data going to be stored? I would also appreciate if someone could give me some resources to practical examples of implementing a SAAS architecture. Thanks

  • Custom DataAnnotation attribute with datastore access in ASP.NET MVC 2

    I have my application designed with Repository pattern implemented and my code prepared for optional dependency injection in future, if we need to support another datastore. I want to create a custom validation attribute for my content objects. This attribute should perform some kind of datastore lookup. For instance, I need my content to have unique slugs. To check if a Slug already exist, I want to use custom DataAnnotation attribute in my Base content object (instead of manually checking if a slug exists each time in my controller's Insert actions). Attribute logic would do the validation. So far I have come up with this: public class UniqueSlugAttribute : ValidationAttribute { private readonly IContentRepository _repository; public UniqueSlugAttribute(ContentType contentType) { _repository = new XmlContentRepository(contentType); } public override bool IsValid(object value) { if (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(value.ToString())) { return false; } string slug = value.ToString(); if(_repository.IsUniqueSlug(slug)) return true; return false; } } part of my Base content class: ... [DataMember] public ContentType ContentType1 { get; set; } [DataMember] [Required(ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof (Localize), ErrorMessageResourceName = "Validation_SlugIsBlank")] [UniqueSlug(ContentType1)] public string Slug { get { return _slug; } set { if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(value)) _slug = Utility.RemoveIllegalCharacters(value); } } ... There's an error in line [UniqueSlug(ContentType1)] saying: "An attribute argument must be a constant expression, typeof expression or array creation expression of an attribute parameter type." Let me explain that I need to provide the ContentType1 parameter to the Constructor of UniqueSlug class because I use it in my data provider. It is actually the same error that appears if you try do to this on the built-in Required attribute: [Required(ErrorMessageResourceType = typeof (Localize), ErrorMessageResourceName = Resources.Localize.SlugRequired] It does not allow us to set it to dynamic content. In the first case ContentType1 gets known at runtime, in the second case the Resources.Localize.SlugRequired also gets known at runtime (because the Culture settings are assigned at runtime). This is really annoying and makes so many things and implementation scenarios impossible. So, my first question is, how to get rid of this error? The second question I have, is whether you think that I should redesign my validation code in any way?

    What is the best way to do complex reporting on subversion logs like the following for each file? file, directory, last revision date, previous revision date(where revision date is at least 30 older than last), days diff(between revision dates) Since Subversion allows on revision to change multiple files I assume svn log needs to be run against each file individually. Ideas (that don't seem very good): Shell scripting to produce a csv file to be imported to a DB. The following is a start but doesn't show the filename: find . -name "." -print | xargs -l svn log -l 2 Shell scripting to produce XML and then use XSLT to create CSV to import to a DB. It might use a similar command to above but would still have some of the same limitation. Write a program to just parse the log on the whole directory tree, make one insert to DB per revision/file combination, and then query the DB.

    I have a method that counts the number of Contacts each Supplier, Customer and Manufacturer has (this is a scenario to try make explaining easier!) The models are all created by Linq to SQL classes. Each Supplier, Customer and Manufacturer may have one or more Contacts public int CountContacts<TModel>(TModel entity) where TModel : class { return entity.Contacts.Count(); } The above of course doesnt work, because the 'entity' is generic and doesnt know whether it has the property 'Contacts'. Can someone help with how to achieve this?

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 UpdateModel() is not updating values in memory or database

    Hello, I am new to MVC, and so am working through the NerdDinner tutorial, here. In particular, I'm running into problems with the use of the UpdateModel method, which is explained in the part five of that tutorial. The problem is, when I try to edit the value of a dinner object using the UpdateModel method, the values do not get updated, and no exceptions are thrown. Oddly, I am not having any trouble with the Create or Delete features that are illustrated in the tutorial. Only the update feature isn't working. Below, I have included the Controller code that I am using, as well as the view markup, which is contained in both an aspx View file and an ascx Partial View file.   • Restore Database from MSSql 2008 to MSSql 2005

    Hello... I have created a set of tables (around 20) in MSSql 2008 and entered around 1000 records to appropriate tables. But the issue is that I want that same tables with all the entered data into MSSql 2005 (SQLEXPRESS). Obviously it won't work by taking a backup and restore it into MSSql 2005 as it won't support backward compatibility. Any suggestion would be appreciated.... Thanks in advance....

  • Mapping Enums to Database with NHibernate/Castle ActiveRecord

    There's a few other posts on mapping Enums to the DB with ActiveRecord, but none of them answer my question. I have an enum called OrderState: public enum OrderState {InQueue, Ordered, Error, Cancelled} And I have the following property on the table: [Property(NotNull = true, SqlType = "orderstate", ColumnType = "DB.EnumMapper, WebSite")] public OrderState State { get { return state; } set { state = value; } } And I have the following type class: public class EnumMapper : NHibernate.Type.EnumStringType<OrderState> { public EnumMapper() { } public override NHibernate.SqlTypes.SqlType SqlType { get { return new NHibernate.SqlTypes.SqlType(DbType.Object); } } } Now this actually works the way I want, but the problem is I have tons of enums and I don't want to create a EnumMapper class for each one of them. Isn't there some way to just tell ActiveRecord to use DbType.Object for any enum? It seems to either want to be an integer or a string, but nothing else. This one's been driving me crazy for the last 2 hours.. Mike
