• Learning Electronics & the Arduino Microcontroller

  Lately, I've had a growing interest in Electronics & Microcontrollers. I'm a loyal reader of Make Magazine and thoroughly enjoy seeing all the various projects in each issue, even though I rarely try to make any of them. I've been reading and watching videos about the Arduino, which is an open source Microcontroller and software project that the people at Make (and a lot of other folks) are pretty hot about. Even the prebuilt hardware is remarkably inexpensive , although there are kits available to build one from the base components. (Full disclosure: I bought my first soldering iron... EVER... just last week, so I fully acknowledge the likelihood of making some mistakes. That's why I'm not trying to do the "build it yourself" kit just yet. It's also another reason to be happy the hardware is so cheap.) There are a number of different Arduino boards available, but the two that have really piqued my interest are the Arduino UNO and the NETduino. The UNO is a very popular board, with a number of features and is under $35 which means I won't hurl myself off a bridge when I inevitably destroy it. The NETduino is very similar to the Arduino UNO and has the added advantage of being programmable with... you guessed it... C#. I'm actually ordering both boards and some miscellaneous other doodads to go with them.  There are a few good websites for this sort of thing, including www.makershed.com and www.adafruit.com. The price difference is negligible, so in my case, I'm ordering from Maker Shed (the Make Magazine people) because I want to support them. :) I've also picked up a few O'Reilly books on the subject which I am looking forward to reading & reviewing: Make: Electronics, Arduino: A Quick Start Guide and Getting Started With Arduino (all three of which arrived on my doorstep today.) This ties in with my "learn more about robotics" goals as well, since I'll need a good understanding of Electronics if I want to move past Lego Mindstorms eventually.

• Ubuntu Desktop does not load

  If I login on my Ubuntu 14.04, I get the following desktop: This weird behavior appeared after I executed sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and restarted my computer. Don't know why though.   I'm always on the lookout for cool toys that can empower my kids (9, 6 and 2yo) to be creative and break the mold of being just consumers of other's ideas. I recently came across littleBits while watching a TED video of their creator. I was immediately hooked. It seemed like the perfect blend of simplicity and self-learning that I was looking to get my kids into electronics. So I went ahead and purchased the kit from SparkFun and a bunch of standalone parts (&quot;bits&quot;) from the site itself. There are also a bunch of videos and pictures on their site to get a better idea of what they are, as well as multitude YouTube videos. This weekend I gave them to my kids, and coincidentally, we also travelled to my hometown and they got to share them too with their cousins. Man, what a blast it was! • Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange – Version 1.1 Now Available!

  Since its announcement at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, the Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange is becoming the source to access Enterprise Manager entities, including plug-ins, connectors, deployment procedures, assemblies, templates, and more.  Based on feedback, the Exchange has recently been updated so Enterprise Manager administrators can find and access Oracle and partner-built plug-ins and connectors easier. The Exchange enables anyone to contribute an Enterprise Manager entity through the “Contribute” tab, where information about the entity is captured and placed on the Exchange once it is approved.  The Exchange encourages comment through the Enterprise Manager Forum.  An Oracle partner can build a plug-in by accessing the Extensibility Development Kit (EDK) found at the Development Resources tab.  Oracle partners and customers can can also engage a partner that has built its practice specializing in plug-in development and deployment.  One of those partners is Blue Medora, which has effectively used the EDK to build plug-ins to manage non-Oracle targets.  Next week Blue Medora will be a "Guest Blogger" and tell a great story about heterogeneous datacenter management.Partners can also have their plug-ins validated through the Oracle Validated Integration (OVI) program.  NetApp is an example of a partner that recently built an Enterprise Manager plug-in and has validated it through the program.  Check back here in two weeks for their blog post describing the value of an Enterprise Manager "OVI" plug-in as well as discuss specifics the NetApp storage plug-in.  Check out the NetApp Enterprise Manager Validated Integration datasheet in the meantime. • Raspberry Pi, Time Capsule Progress

  So by way of an update. I thought all was good with my Raspberry Pi, Debian and Netatalk Apple Time Capsule Clone. However something very strange going on. Although I could backup my Mac's + PC's fine to Raspberry Pi with external USB HD; strangely with RPI running, I couldn't use AirPlay. I found myself unable to play anything from Mac to Apple TV. So after lots of trying to make this work, I about turned and finally went out and got myself a 2TB Apple Time Capsule. More cash than I would want to spend on anything like this, but Apple you got me. I would like to offer a top tip, which maybe goes a small way to justifying silly expenditure... You can easily add a USB HD to any Time Capsule. I've just added a 3 TB external USB HD, giving me a 5 TB of total backup grunt. 3 TB External USB HD, was peanuts by comparison to Apple kit. So all working, its all solid as you'd expect.Apple 2, maybe me .5. But strong, solid backups now happening, without hassle (but a bit of a credit card bill to follow)

  I'm a bit disappointed there is almost no discussion of this no matter where I look so I guess I'll have to ask. I'm writing a cross platform memory bench marking application which requires direct physical address mapping rather than virtual addressing. EDIT The solution would look something like the Linux/Unix system calls: int fd = open("/dev/mem", O_RDONLY); mmap(NULL, len, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, fd, PHYSICAL_ADDRESS_OFFSET); which will require the kernel to either give you a virtual page mapping to the desired physical address or return that it failed. This does require supervisor privileges but that is ok. I have seen a lot of information about shared memory and memory mapped files but all of these reside on disc and are thus not really useful when I'm trying to make a system dependent read. It is very similar to writing an IO driver although I do no need write permissions to the physical address. This site gives an example of how to do it on a driver level using the Windows Driver Kit: NT Insider: Sharing Memory between drivers and applications This solution would probably require Visual Studio which currently I do not have access to. (I have downloaded the WDK api but it complained about my use of GCC for Windows). I'm traditionally a Linux programmer so I'm hoping there might be something really simple I'm missing.   Here are the notes for today’s release: Added a progress indicator when saving issues. Added support for viewing CodePlex RSS feeds in Chrome. Deployed several bug fixes: Fixed an issue where the back button on Internet Explorer was not working as intended when browsing code. Fixed an issue where long commit comments would push the source control info box outside of the boundaries of the page. Fixed an issue where Internet Explorer users were not able to widen the frame of the source code browser until a file was selected. Fixed an issue where opening a source code file directly from a URL in Internet Explorer would cause the source code tree to be collapsed. Fixed an issue where adding a code snippet with long lines of text to a discussion thread using Internet Explorer would needlessly display a vertical scrollbar, limiting the amount of code visible. Fixed an issue where tabbing through some links would render them invisible. We deprecated support for embedding PreEmptive analytics statistics on the project statistics page. • I can write code...but can't design well. Any suggestions?

  I feel that I am good at writing code in bits and pieces, but my designs really suck. The question is how do I improve my designs (in order to become a better designer). I think schools and colleges do a good job of teaching people as to how to become good at mathematical problem solving, but lets admit the fact that most programs taught at school are generally around 1000 - 2000 lines long, which means that it is mostly an academic exercise and no way reflects the complexity of real world software (a few hundred thousand to millions of lines of code). This is where I believe that even projects like topcoder/project euler also won't be of much help, they might sharpen your mathematical problem solving ability - but you might become a theoretician programmer; someone who is more interested in the nice, clean stuff, and someone who is utterly un-interested in the day to day mundane and hairy stuff that most application programmers deal with. So my question is how do I improve my design skills? That is the ability to design small/medium scale applications that will go into a few thousand of lines of code? How can I learn design skills that would help me build a better html editor kit, or some graphics program like gimp?
