• Need some help/advice on WCF Per-Call Service and NServiceBus interop.

  I have WCF Per-Call service wich provides data for clients and at the same time is integrated with NServiceBus. All statefull objects are stored in UnityContainer wich is integrated into custom service host. NServiceBus is configured in service host and uses same container as service instances. Every client has its own instance context(described by Juval Lowy in his book in chapter about Durable Services). If i need to send request over bus I just use some kind of dispatcher and wait response using Thread.Sleep().Since services are per-call this is ok afaik. But I am confused a bit about messages from bus, that service must handle and provide them to clients. For some data like stock quotes I just update some kind of statefull object and and then, when clients invoke GetQuotesData() just provide data from this object. But there are numerous service messages like new quote added and etc. At this moment I have an idea to implement something like "Postman daemon" =)) and store this type of messages in instance context. Then client will invoke "GetMail()",recieve those messages and parse them. Problem is that NServiceBus messages are "Interface based" and I cant pass them over WCF, so I need to convert them to types derieved from some abstract class. Dunno what is best way to handle this situation. Will be very gratefull for any advice on this. Thanks in advance.

  We are starting to develop a new application and I'm searching for information/tips/guides on application architecture. Application should: read the data from an external (USB) device send the data to the remote server (through internet) receive the data from the remote server perform a video call with to the calling (support) center receive a video call call from the calling (support) center support touch screens In addition: some of the data should also be visible through the web page. So I was thinking about: On the server side: use the database (probably MS SQL) use ORM (nHibernate) to map the data from the DB to the domain objects create a layer with business logic in C# create a web (WCF) services (for client application) create an asp.net mvc application (for item 7.) to enable data view through the browser On the client side I would use WPF 4 application which will communicate with external device and the wcf services on the server. So far so good. Now the problem begins. I have no idea how to create a video call (outgoing or incoming) part of the application. I believe that there is no problem to communicate with microphone, speaker, camera with WPF/C#. But how to communicate with the call center? What protocol and encoding should be used? I think that I will need to create some kind of server which will: have a list of operators in the calling center and track which operator is occupied and which operator is free have a list of connected end users receive incoming calls from end users and delegate call to free operator delegate calls from calling center to the end user Any info, link, anything on where to start would be much appreciated. • .net/iis6 Limitations of the urlMappings in web.config for extensionless url rewriting

  I'm investigating a simple url rewriting setup for iis6 / net 2.0 sites. I've added a . wildcard mapping in IIS that points to the .net executable. I'm also using the urlMappings element in the web.config to add some rewritting urls. I've moved the config outside of the web.config so I can make changes to the list without forcing application restarts, like so: <urlMappings configSource="config\urlMappings.config"> </urlMappings> I'd like to allow our content management to add urls to this file so that we can have extensionless friendly urls. <add url="~/someurl" mappedUrl="index.aspx?page=123" /> This works just fine, but I'm concerned about limitations in the number of entries that I can map in the urlMappings config. I can't seem to find any documentation on this. Has anyone found any limitations? Thanks.

• Suggestions for a PHP programmer wanting to create a timer app for an internet cafe

  Hi, I was asked by a friend to make a timer app for his small internet cafe. He wants to have timers on each client PCs. The timers indicate how much time has been spent by the customer. On the PC that he uses, there's another program that has the overview of all the timers and there's a button for each client PCs that allows him to blacken out the screen. It's not automatic hence the button. The problem is I haven't done any desktop apps before so that's why I'm asking you guys (the awesome people at SO) for suggestions/advice on what language/tool to use. A little info about me: I did Java but haven't tried Swing though. I know a bit about Python and Ruby too. I don't mind learning new languages as long as I get to finish or get a prototype up and running. He doesn't mind if I could show him a prototype, it's actually for me. It gives me satisfaction to see I'm progressing. I'm not planning on asking him to pay me for doing this. Whatever he gives me is fine. P.S. He's using Windows XP

  How do I escape ampersands in a batch file (or from the Windows command line) in order to use the start command to open web pages with ampersands in the URL? Double quotes will not work with start; this starts a new command line window instead. Update 1: Wael Dalloul's solution works. In addition, if there are URL encoded characters (e.g. space is encoded as %20) in the URL and it is in a batch file then '%' must be encoded as '%%'. This is not the case in the example. Example, from the command line (CMD.EXE): start http://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=escape+ampersand&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 will result in http://www.google.com/search?client=opera being opened in the default browser and these errors in the command line window: 'rls' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. • best practice for boolean REST results

  I have a resource /system/resource And I wish to ask the system a boolean question about the resource that can't be answered by processing on the client (i.e I can't just GET the resource and look through the actual resource data - it requires some processing on the backend using data not available to the client). eg /system/resource/related/otherresourcename I want this is either return true or false. Does anyone have any best practice examples for this type of interaction? Possibilities that come to my mind: use of HTTP status code, no returned body (smells wrong) return plain text string (True, False, 1, 0) - Not sure what string values are appropriate to use, and furthermore this seems to be ignoring the Accept media type and always returning plain text come up with a boolean object for each of my support media types and return the appropriate type (a JSON document with a single boolean result, an XML document with a single boolean field). However this seems unwieldy. I don't particularly want to get into a long discussion about the true meaning of a RESTful system etc - I have used the word REST in the title because it best expresses the general flavour of system I am designing (even if perhaps I am tending more towards RPC over the web rather than true REST). However, if someone has some thoughts on how a true RESTful system avoids this problem entirely I would be happy to hear them.

• C# Binary File Compare

  I'm in a situation where I want to compare two binary files. One of them is already stored on the server with a pre-calculated Crc32 in the database from when I stored it originally. I know that if the Crc is different then the files are definitely different. However, if the Crc is the same I don't know that the files are. So what I'm looking for is a nice efficient way of comparing the two streams on from the posted file and one from the file system. I'm not an expert on streams but I'm well aware that I could easily shoot myself in the foot here as far as memory usage is concerned. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Should I worry about reigning in namespace number/length/scope?

  I've recently reorganized a solution-in-progress from 24 projects to 4. To keep the copious files organized in the "main" project, things are in folders in folders in folders. I think I've preserved a logical, discoverable arrangement of the solution content. As a result, of course, I end up with namespaces like AppName.DataAccess.NHibernate.Fluent.Mappings. Is there any compelling reason that I should care about flattening out the namespace hierarchy when my project has a somewhat deeply nested folder structure? (I am not concerned about resolving or managing using directives; I let ReSharper do all the heavy lifting here.)

• Extending EF4 SQL Generation

  Hi, We're using EF4 in a fairly large system and occasionally run into problems due to EF4 being unable to convert certain expressions into SQL. At present, we either need to do some fancy footwork (DB/Code) or just accept the performance hit and allow the query to be executed in-memory. Needless to say neither of these is ideal and the hacks we've sometimes had to use reduce readability / maintainability. What we would ideally like is a way to extend the SQL generation capabilities of the EF4 SQL provider. Obviously there are some things like .Net method calls which will always have to be client-side but some functionality like date comparisons (eg Group by weeks in Linq to Entities ) should be do-able. I've Googled but perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology as all I get is information about the new features of EF4 SQL Generation. For such a flexible and extensible framework, I'd be surprised if this isn't possible. In my head, I'm imagining inheriting from the [SQL 2008] provider and extending it to handle additional expressions / similar in the expression tree it's given to convert to SQL. Any help/pointers appreciated. We're using VS2010 Ultimate, .Net 4 (non-client profile) and EF4. The app is in ASP.Net and is running in a 64-Bit environment in case it makes a difference.

• Testing fault tolerant code

  I’m currently working on a server application were we have agreed to try and maintain a certain level of service. The level of service we want to guaranty is: if a request is accepted by the server and the server sends on an acknowledgement to the client we want to guaranty that the request will happen, even if the server crashes. As requests can be long running and the acknowledgement time needs be short we implement this by persisting the request, then sending an acknowledgement to the client, then carrying out the various actions to fulfill the request. As actions are carried out they too are persisted, so the server knows the state of a request on start up, and there’s also various reconciliation mechanisms with external systems to check the accuracy of our logs. This all seems to work fairly well, but we have difficult saying this with any conviction as we find it very difficult to test our fault tolerant code. So far we’ve come up with two strategies but neither is entirely satisfactory: Have an external process watch the server code and then try and kill it off at what the external process thinks is an appropriate point in the test Add code the application that will cause it to crash a certain know critical points My problem with the first strategy is the external process cannot know the exact state of the application, so we cannot be sure we’re hitting the most problematic points in the code. My problem with the second strategy, although it gives more control over were the fault takes, is I do not like have code to inject faults within my application, even with optional compilation etc. I fear it would be too easy to over look a fault injection point and have it slip into a production environment.

• Comparing ASP.Net Framework to Cakephp, Zend , Ruby on Rails

  I am a PHP developer migrating to C# ASP.Net Framework. As of right now, I am experienced in using Php for developing sites and I use CakePhp and Zend framework as my RAD tools to help me produce better applications. As I move over to ASP.NET, I have this view that C# ASP.Net framework itself is already a RAD tool and is equivalent to using Cakephp, Zend, or even Ruby on Rails. So I really shouldn't have no concerns trying to find a separate library for ASP.NET that will help me produce better applications. To me, in a sense the ASP.NET is already like a MVC cause it seperates the model from the view and the methods are almost like controllers. So as far as having the best tools are concerned, should I be satisfied with just using ASP.NET as my RAD tool.

Is it possible to get WS-Security working on an ASMX file or is ASMX too simplistic and I have to upgrade to WFC (which I really don't want to do)?

• C# differences between Windows Mobile and regular Windows

  Are there many differences between Windows and Windows Mobile as far as C# programming is concerned? I can write some moderately complicated programs in C#, but I'm not sure if it would just run perfectly on a Windows smartphone, or if something has to be done to port it. If so, is there a tool that will automatically revise code to make it mobile-compatible? The reason I ask is that the new Windows mobile 7 will only support a few methods of app development, one of which is C#. Also, do smartphones with non-windows operating systems have C# support available? Or can C# code be converted to Symbian or iPhone or whatever? Thanks for any help you can provide.

• Is WPF the Future of Windows UI Development?

  We're debating whether our future Windows UI development should be WinForms or WPF. How have some of you made this decision? Most of our applications are LOB applications, and I'm not sure I see a clear and overwhelming benefit to WPF for these types of applications. However, my knowledge of WPF is limited. I'm also a little concerned that WPF will be in vogue for another couple years and then Microsoft will get tired of it and push something else on us. I guess one argument against this is the fact that Visual Studio 2010 is a WPF application. Thanks.

• PHP Redirect problem with subdomain

  I'm using PHP to redirect a page back to the previous page with the following: header("Location: {$_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER']}"); This set of pages will only be used by internal users, so I'm not terribly concerned about the fact that the referer will not always be available. The problem I'm running in to is that if the referer looks like http://subdomain.domain.com/test.php?id=13, the redirect ends up going to http://subdomain.domain.com/.domain.com/test.php?id=13. Notice the additional .domain.com/ in the url. I've tested by hardcoding the value, and it causes the problem as well. phpMyAdmin seems to suffer the same issue, but only on this particular server. If this is not an SO question, please move accordingly.

• Problem consuming Exchange Web Service 2010 with jax-ws metro

  I am trying to consume the Exchange 2010 Web Service interface using JAX-WS. I'm using JAX-WS 2.2 RI (Metro 2.0). 2.1 exhibited the same problem. I am running into trouble with Exchange, which returns "HTTP/1.1 415 Cannot process the message because the content type 'text/xml;charset=utf-8' was not the expected type 'text/xml; charset=utf-8'." as a reponse (2.1 quoted the charset value, otherwise same response). Apparently I need to dictate the exact Content-type header for Exchange to be happy. Is there a way for me to do this without forcing me to manually rebuild the dependency? I currently rely on published maven artifacts, and would like to continue doing this if at all possible. The consuming process is a regular J2SE app, with no containers in sight. I have control of the application and can add pretty much anything required to the applications scope, but can not add out-of-process items like proxy servers. The client classes were generated from local WSDL, but the charset specification is derived from constants declared in the jaxws RI implementation, not the generated code. The resulting HTTP transport is thus handled by the standard http/https client from Sun JRE5 or JRE6.

However I am having tough time to configure oracle instantclient to use it with mono. We don't currently have any choice over this, we're basically stuck with what someone else decided for us. Sybase IQ is a column-oriented database that is perfect for a data warehouse. Unfortunately, my project needs to do a lot of transactional updating (we're more of an operational database) so I'm looking for more mainstream alternatives. • Calling webservice via server causes java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol

  I am writing a web-service, which parses an xml file. In the client, I read the whole content of the xml into a String then I give it to the web-service. If I run my web-service with main as a Java-Application (for tests) there is no problem, no error messages. • Regular Expressions: RegEx for determining valid PHP class property names?

  I am using PHP's magic __set and __get methods to access a private array in a class. I want to make sure the property names requested (i.e. $myObj->FakeProperty) are valid according to PHP property name rules before accessing them. My current RegEx isn't doing the trick; with my test values, _12 always falls through the cracks. I'm not actually sure that my test values even represent a realistic representation of what is and isn't allowed for PHP class property names, but I'm not really too concerned about it, just that I have some sort of rudimentary check in place. • Looking for exhaustive list of commands and a way to set style

  Hi All, I'm currently working with CKEditor (http://ckeditor.com/). I'm looking for: 1) an exhaustive list of commands available by default via 'execCommand'. 2) a mechanism by which to set styles (as in the same way the FONT and SIZE combo boxes do it). I saw the function called 'setStyle' in the documentation, however it seems to require an exact element. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do so based on the selection -- there is no way to use ID or CLASS, as the selected portions have none. I've posted to the forums but they don't seem to be terribly active as far as replies are concerned. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Best.

  My problem is that I try to upload an image and some text values to an rails server, and the text values end up as files, insted of just param values.
