  Is there any way you can overwrite a line in PHP. let me be a little more clearer using examples. My array array{ [DEVICE] => eth0, [IPADDR] => 192.168.0.2, [NETMASK] => 255.255.255.0, [NETWORK] => 192.168.0.0, [BROADCAST] => 255.255.255.255, [GATEWAY] => 192.168.0.1, [ONBOOT] => no } File im overwriting DEVICE=eth0 IPADDR=192.168.200.2 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.200.0 BROADCAST=255.255.255.255 GATEWAY=192.168.200.1 ONBOOT=no DNS1=195.100.10.1 Result of the File that is rewritten DEVICE=eth0 IPADDR=192.168.0.2 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 BROADCAST=255.255.255.255 GATEWAY=192.168.0.1 ONBOOT=no DNS1=195.100.10.1 Note that DNS1=195.100.10.1 Stays in the file becuase it dosent have a key with the value of DNS in our array. • How would I access the Windows Login (Authentication) API from a C++ Service Application?

  Let us imagine for a moment that I have a piece of hardware that can act as an authentication for a user on a given system. I want to write an application in C++ to run as a service, look for this device and if found log the appropriate user in. I believe I have found the API's I would need to use to perform the hardware and service portions of the application but am having a hard time nailing down a way to create a "real" user login. Is this possible? If so where would I look to find resources on accomplishing this? I think of it as being an analog to fingerprint scanner login type devices.

• Recommended way to manage persistent PHP script processes?

  First off - hello, this is my first Stack Overflow question so I'll try my best to communicate properly. The title of my question may be a bit ambiguous so let me expand upon it immediately: I'm planning a project which involves taking data inputs from several "streaming" APIs, Twitter being one example. I've got a basic script coded up in PHP which runs indefinitely from the command line, taking input from the Twitter streaming API and doing very basic things with it. My eventual objective is to have several such processes running (perhaps daemonized using the System Daemon PEAR class), and I would like to be able to manage them from some governing process (also a PHP script). By manage I mean basic operations such as stop/start and (most crucially) automatically restarting a process that crashes. I would appreciate any pointers on how best to approach this process management angle. Again, apologies if this question is too expansive - tips on more tightly focused lines of enquiry would be appreciated if necessary. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your answers.

• is there a downside to putting N in front of strings in scripts? Is it considered a "best practice"?

  Let's say I have a table that has a varchar field. If I do an insert like this: INSERT MyTable SELECT N'the string goes here' Is there any fundamental difference between that and: INSERT MyTable SELECT 'the string goes here' My understanding was that you'd only have a problem if the string contained a Unicode character and the target column wasn't unicode. Other than that, SQL deals with it just fine and converts the string with the N'' into a varchar field (basically ignores the N). I was under the impression that N in front of strings was a good practice, but I'm unable to find any discussion of it that I'd consider definitive. Title may need improvement, feel free.

• What could prevent from running a binary on linux distribution compiled on a different platform ?

  We have 2 different compilation machine: red hat as4 and as5. Our architects require us, developers, to compile our program on those 2 platforms each time before copying them on their respective machine in production. What could prevent us from compiling our application on one machine only (let say the red has as 4 for instance) and deploy that binary on all target platform instead ? What is your point of view and could you pinpoint specific issues you've encountered with doing so ? What issues may I face with doing so ?

  Excuse my ignorance, as I'm not a computer engineer but with roots in biology. I have become a great fan of pre-allocating objects (kudos to SO and R inferno by Patrick Burns) and would like to improve my coding habits. In lieu of this fact, I've been thinking about writing more efficient functions and have the following question. Is there any benefits in removing variables that will be overwritten at the start of the next loop, or is this just a waste of time? For the sake of argument, let's assume that the size of old and new variables is very similar or identical.

• How to filter results by multiple fields?

  I am working on a survey application in ruby on rails and on the results page I want to let users filter the answers by a bunch of demographic questions I asked at the start of the survey. For example I asked users what their gender and career was. So I was thinking of having dropdowns for gender and career. Both dropdowns would default to all but if a user selected female and marketer then my results page would so only answers from female marketers. I think the right way of doing this is to use named_scopes where I have a named_scope for every one of my demographic questions, in this example gender and career, which would take in a sanitized value from the dropdown to use at the conditional but i'm unsure on how to dynamically create the named_scope chain since I have like 5 demographic questions and presumably some of them are going to be set to all.

• How to properly close a process with NppExec?

  I'm not sure what's going on here, but the following code continues running even after I end the process in the NppExec console with Ctrl-C (during the execution of the while loop). I restarted my computer to stop the Ctrl key sends.   Hi All, I am using asp.net 3.5 and C#. I have a blog site and I want that whenever user enter any comment, the suscriber related to that post will get the notification. So what I am doing that I am sending mail at the same time as the comment is inserted into the table, which sometimes take time because of the quantity of user. Is their any way that user enter the comment into the database and the send mail function will run asynchornysly which will not interfear user to go ahead with his task. please let me know how to acheieve it in a simplier way.   I have a need to sync auto_increment fields between two tables in different databases on the same MySQL server. The hope was to create a stored procedure where the permissions of the admin would let the web user run ALTER TABLE [db1].[table] AUTO_INCREMENT = [num]; without giving it permissions (That just smells of SQL injection). My problem is I'm receiving errors when creating the store procedure. Is this something that is not allowed by MySQL?   Can the JVM recover from an OutOfMemoryError without a restart if it gets a chance to run the GC before more object allocation requests come in? Do the various JVM implementations differ in this aspect? EDIT: My question was about the JVM recovering and not the user program trying to recover by catching the error. In other words if an OOME is thrown in an application server (jboss/websphere/..) do I have to restart it? Or can I let it run if further requests seem to work without a problem. Sorry if that wan't clear.

• Hitting a memory limit slows down the .Net application

  We have a 64bit C#/.Net3.0 application that runs on a 64bit Windows server. From time to time the app can use large amount of memory which is available. In some instances the application stops allocating additional memory and slows down significantly (500+ times slower).When I check the memory from the task manager the amount of the memory used barely changes. The application keeps on running very slowly and never gives an out of memory exception. Any ideas? Let me know if more data is needed.

  Ok, so the title may trick you a bit, and I'm sorry for that but didn't find a better title. This question might be a bit hard to understand so I'll try my best. I have no idea how this works or if it is even possible but what I want to do is for example create a file type (lets imagine .test (in which a random file name would be random.test)). Now before I continue, its obviously easy to do this using for example: filename = "random.test" file = open(filename, 'w') file.write("some text here") But now what I would like to know is if it is possible to write the file .test so if I set it to open with a wxPython program, it recognizes it and for example opens up a Message Dialog automatically. I'm sorry if I'm being vague and in case you don't understand, let me know so I can try my best to explain you.

• Displaying Photos on iPhone

  Hi all, I'm working on an iPhone app and I need to be able to display images to users. I have already gotten the code that takes the photo and stores it into the filesystem working well. Now I just need to figure out how to display the image. I've looked at the Three20 project I've read about on a few of the posts here, but it seems a bit cumbersome and like an extra dependency to import link and combine all of the Three20 library into my little app. Are there any other ways or a more streamlined library that will let me display photos to my users? Do you let the fact that a project is going to be open-source weigh on the decision of what language to use? For example. Most .NET open-source projects are written in C#.   Hi, I have developed an application which has retrieved the information from remote location...so i put those in UITableView's Section.In response, i will be getting images also..for this i put the background process(only for images..because the app will take more time to retrieve images than text based information..).It is working fine...But if i scroll the tableview while loading the images..it is going to be crashed.... crash Log: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... could anyone has the solution for this..please let me know..how to resolve this crash...Even i used NSThread class for this.. but i didn't get the solution... Thanks, Srinivas G

• Why is the servlet request not available in the portlet API

  The portlet API deos not provide any reference to the enclosing servlet request and response objects. I know it is not the preferred model of interaction with the user, but it seems draconian to remove all access. I understand that for portlet driven interaction with the user, you want to use portlet URLs, and let the portlet container manage all the complexity. However if you have a number of portlets which are basically showing variants of the same data, it makes sense for them to be able to use the enclosing request to drive the data. We ended up using using a Liferay specific call to get the request, and it all seems to work as we wish. However I do feel the guilt. So my question really is, is there an underlying deep reason for the prohibition, or is it just to enforce the authors view of the API environment?

• Delphi component or library to display mathematical expressions

  I'm looking for a simple component that displays mathematical expressions in Delphi. When I started out I thought it would be easy to find something on the net, but it turns out it was harder than anticipated. There are lots and lots of components that will parse mathematical expressions, but few (none?) that will display them. Ideally I would like a component as simple as a TLabel, where I could set the caption to some expression and it would be displayed correctly, but some sort of library that let's me draw expressions to a canvas would also be sufficient for my needs. Update: I'm not talking about plotting graphs of functions or something like that. I want to display (for instance) (X^2+3)/X like this:
