• I have a question about URI templates in WCF Services

  I have a web service with following operation contract and my service is hosted at http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/ [OperationContract] [WebGet(UriTemplate = "/Files/{Filepath}")] Stream DownloadFile(string Filepath); This web service would let users download file, if the proper filepath is provided (assuming, I somehow find out that proper filepath). Now, I can access this service from a browser by typing, http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/Files/(Filepath} If {filepath} is some simple string, its not a problem, but I want to send the location of the file. Lets us say users want to download file C:\Test.mp3 on the server. But how can I pass C:\Test.mp3 as {Filepath}? I get an error when I type http://localhost:9002/Service.svc/Files/C:\Test.mp3 in the browser. I am new to web services and find that this community is the quickest way to get answers to my questions.

• Increased kerning on website text

  We're developing a site for a client right now and my boss (designer only) is once again making me increase letter-spacing on the text so that it looks 'prettier'. I am of the firm belief that this often causes eye-strain and hinders readability in body copy, but being the boss, she is of course always 'right' until I can provide her with examples showing why she's wrong (generally pretty easy). In this case, however, I can't find any articles talking about eye-strain and kerning, so I figured I'd ask what you guys think about the issue of increased letter-spacing in web text. Take a look at http://sparktoignite.com/allograft/process.php and tell me how you feel about the body copy. We're using font-embedding, so you'll only see the proper font in FF, Safari, and Chrome. Let me know what you guys think about the readability and eye-strain caused by the font. My boss currently thinks it's 100% perfect (she wanted the kerning increased further, but I talked her down luckily).

  I have a two generic abstract types: Entity and Association. Let's say Entity looks like this: public class Entity<TId> { //... } and Association looks like this: public class Association<TEntity, TEntity2> { //... } How do I constrain Association so they can be of any Entity? I can accomplish it by the following: public class Association<TEntity, TId, TEntity2, TId2> where TEntity : Entity<TId> where TEntity2: Entity<TId2> { //... } This gets very tedious as more types derive from Association, because I have to keep passing down TId and TId2. Is there a simpler way to do this, besides just removing the constraint?

• Asset tracking in "real-time" - how best to display in browser?

  I am developing an asset tracking system, standard LAMP, and now am wondering how best to present the data to the user in the browser. I expect to track and most a few thousand items, and to refresh them every second or so. I want to draw a floorplan or map of the area and represent the assets the assets symbolically on that (with different symbols for different classes of assets). Additionally, the user should be able to click on an asset to interact with it, and search for a particular asset and centre the screen on it, draw a circle round it, etc http://graphite.wikidot.com/ Looks good - is there any alternative? At its simplest, I suppose I could just generate a JPEG and display it, using CSS to let me know if/where a user clicks ... but what's the "best" way to do it?

• How to do 'git status' on untracked directory?

  I have 6,000 untracked files in one subdirectory and I'm constructing .gitignore files to filter out the unwanted ones. I'm testing my gitignore filters as I go by running 'git status'. However, I have a larger number of untracked other files in a different subdirectory, so 'git status' shows all of those too, which makes it very hard to see what the .gitignore rules are doing. If the files were tracked, then I could just do 'git status .' and it would restrict the git-status output to only those files in the current directory, but because the current directory and all its contents are untracked, 'git status .' returns "error: pathspec . did not match any file(s) known to git." I'm using git-1.6.6.1 for this, although interestingly my testing shows that git-1.7.1 (on a different system) does actually let you do git-status on an untracked directory. Unfortunately I can't upgrade git on this system. Is there a known workaround for -1.6.6.1?

• SQL Encryption - Asymmetric Key - 2nd Server

  Hello, I created an asymmetric key on one of my SQL servers (2008). I encrypted a password field and I am able to retrieve that password just fine on my development server. The issue comes into play where I need to move this data to a production server. Here is the code for the key that was created: CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD='#########' CREATE ASYMMETRIC KEY UserEncryptionKey WITH ALGORITHM = RSA_2048 Now, when I run this on the production server, it creates the key just fine. However, when I run my sproc to get the password, it returns NULL. SQL: SELECT EncryptByAsymKey(AsymKey_ID('UserEncryptionKey'), Password ) FROM Users WHERE UserName = '######' Any thoughts on what I need to do to get the encrypted field to work on multiple SQL Servers? • Cross Theaded Calls - Many controls Heavy GUI Application after .net 1.1 2.0 upgrade- best way ??

  I have recently upgraded a .net1.1 solution to .net2.0. AS this is a very heavy GUI appilcation with loads of controls and many multithreaded operations that update the GUI. While these operations worked seamlessly in .net1.1 it is throwing up Cross Threaded Illegal operations after the upgrade. Considering the fact that tehre are numerous grids, buttons and status labels that need to be updated via these multi threaded operations, I decided to code for checking the InvokeRequired solution, however doing that for every control would probably not be the best way to go about it. I was wondering if you could suggest a better way of how I can go about it or propose any OOPS based class structure that I could code around to make the code look better. • Not able to pass multiple override parameters using nose-testconfig 0.6 plugin in nosetests

  Hi, I am able to override multiple config parameters using nose-testconfig plugin only if i pass the overriding parameters on commandline. e.g. nosetests -c nose.cfg -s --tc=jack.env1:asl --tc=server2.env2:abc But when I define the same thing inside nose.cfg, than only the value for last parameter is modified. e.g. tc = server2.env2:abc tc = jack.env1:asl I checked the plugin code. It looks fine to me.   I hope this question is clear enough -- if not let me know :) What API would I use when I want to write a procedure at runtime and then just run it eventually at low priority while continuing to do the important stuff right now? Example: link checker 1. I write a blog post with links represented by Link objects. I publish the post. 2. Eventually (at very low priority) the system gets around to fetching the URL of each Link object to make sure it's not broken and indicates that in a property of the Link object. 3. When a user visits my blog post, the render code that turns Link objects into HTML knows whether the links have been checked. I'm assuming there's a very general purpose API for doing this kind of "eventually/low priority" stuff.

• Returning the value of an identity column during/after SQL INSERT command

  Using VS 2010, with ASP.NET, and .NET 3.0, and C#... When I use a System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource and call its Insert() method to insert a new row, and that table has an identity column, I'd like my method to return the value of that column. For example, in my SQL 2005 table, I've got: Customer.Id Customer.FirstName Customer.LastName Where Customer.Id is an identity colum. When I call my method InsertNewCustomerRecord( "John", "Smith" ), I'd like to be able to return the Customer.Id that gets automatically generated in the database. Sorry for such a roughly posed question. Let me know if I can add better detail. Thanks.

• Many to Many DataSet Insert to Database using Stored Procedures

  I'm trying to do a many-to-many bulk insert to the database using a list of three different types of models. The only tools I can use are stored procedures and datasets. (But I can't use DataSet fills or DataAdapters, just plain ol' Stored Procedures). Is there an easy way to pass multiple values, let alone, pass three different lists and bulk insert them to a table in the database using stored procedures? (As specified in the title, the three tables are actually two tables and a third table to establish the many-to-many relationship between the two.)

How do I make it such that when I click on the anchor tag, the event on the parent will not be triggered? I've tried using the Jquery method stopPropagation() but still no luck. Any thoughts? • Can't type after "ruby script/server" in InstantRails

  I'm a newb to RoR. I'm using the book "Agile Web Development with Rails" to get started on Windows 7. In the command window, I run the following. >rails demo >cd demo >ruby script/server At this point, it boots the Mongrel server: => Booting Mongrel => Rails 2.3.5 application starting on http://0.0.0.0:3000 => Call with -d to detach => Ctrl-C to shutdown server The book goes on to tell me to run ruby script/generate controller Say but, I cannot Ctrl-C -- or type anything for that matter -- after booting the Mongrel server. Am I supposed to create the new controller in another instance of the InstantRails command window? Right now, the only way I can stop the server is closing the window in which I started the server! Please let me know if you need any other details. tia.

  From Excel, I need to open an Access database and run one of the database's macros. I'm using Excel and Access 2007. Here is my code in Excel: Sub accessMacro() Dim appAccess As New Access.Application Set appAccess = Access.Application appAccess.OpenCurrentDatabase "C:\blah.mdb" appAccess.Visible = True appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries.RunQueries" appAccess.CloseCurrentDatabase End Sub In the Access Database, there is a procedure named RunQueries in a module named RunQueries. Each time I run this, I get the following error: Runtime error '2485': Microsoft Access Office can't find the object 'RunQueries.' I have also tried: appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries" and I get the same errors message. Any idea how to do this? By the way, I could go into a long explanation about why I need to do this, but let me just say that I've already argued against it, and I have to do it this way (meaning, I have to use Excel as a frontend to open several Access dbs and run their macros).

  I want to delete a range of data from a text file using PHP. Let's assume the file contains the following: Hello, World! I want to delete everything from character 2 to character 7. The actual file I need to do this with is very large, so I don't want to have to read the large file in order to delete just a small, given range of data. The data contained within the given range is not known, so str_replace or preg_replace solutions wouldn't work anyways. Thanks!

• How can I share Configuration Settings across multiple projects in Visual Studio?

  Ok I know this may be a design issue, so I would love to have remarks on that as well. I have a Visual Studio web application solution. I have three projects as UserInterface, BusinessLogic and DataAccess. I had to store some user defined settings and I created configSections in the config file. I access these configSections through classes which inherit from .NET's ConfigurationSection base class. So in short for every project I had a separate configSection and for that corresponding configSection I had a class in that project inheriting from ConfigurationSection to access the config section settings. This works all sweet. But the problem arises if there is any setting which I need to use across multiple projects. So If I need to use a setting defined in UserInterface project configSection in, let say, BusinessLogic project I have to actually make a copy of that setting in the BusinessLogic's configSection. This ends up having the same setting copied across multiple configSections. Isn't this a bit too redundant?

• Unit testing a SQL code generator

  The team I'm on is currently writing code in TSQL to generate TSQL code that will be saved as scripts and later run. We're having a little difficulty in separating our unit tests between testing the code generator parts and testing the actual code that they generate. I've read through another similar question, but I was hoping to get some specific examples of what kind of unit test cases we might have. As an example, let's say that I have a bit of code that simply generates a DROP statement for a view, given the view schema and name. Do I just test that the generated code matches some expected outcome using string comparisons and then in a later integration or system test make sure that the drop actually drops the view if it exists, does nothing if the view doesn't exist, or raises an error if the view is one that we are marking as not allowing a drop? • In Delphi, Is there a way to adjust the line spacing of a TMemo?

  I'm working with a TMemo component to display some text in a limited space. Currently it's using a truetype font which doesn't ship with windows and is installed by the app when it runs. On my PC (Running Windows XP), the spacing between each line of text seems to be about eight pixels. On a different PC running Windows 7, the line spacing seems to be about 14 pixels, which is pushing the bottom row of text out of visibility on the memo. So, My question is really this: Is this caused by the different versions of Windows? It's all I could think that was different. Is there some way I can adjust this value so it would be consistent across all instances of the application, wherever it was running? Alternatatively, is there a different component I could use which might let me tweak this value?
