• Creating a network adapter - how hard is it?

  I'm interested in building a little (commercial) device on top of Arduino. I want it to be able to interface with network. Network as in standard Ethernet, Cat5, RJ-45, etc. I know that there is an Ethernet Shield, but it costs even more than the Arduino itself, and it's pretty big. Naturally, I want my device to be as small and as cheap as possible. So I'm thinking about recreating an Ethernet module myself. The problem is - I haven't got any experience with Ethernet, nor do I have a good idea where to start looking. Thus I can't even say if my ideas are feasible. Ultimately I would like the device to have three ports - one for incoming signal, two for outgoing, so the device is essentially a little switch where it is plugged in itself as well. The switching capabilities need not be very fast - the volume of data will be low. 10Mbit is more than enough, can be even slower. If that is not possible, a single port for controlling the device itself will also do. Another possibility I'm considering is power line communications - sending information through power lines. That's another area I've no experience with. What hardware should I be looking at, and where can I find information about the necessary software? So - can anyone tell me if these ideas are feasible, and if yes - where should I start looking?

• C programming - How to print numbers with a decimal component using only loops?

  I'm currently taking a basic intro to C programming class, and for our current assignment I am to write a program to convert the number of kilometers to miles using loops--no if-else, switch statements, or any other construct we haven't learned yet are allowed. So basically we can only use loops and some operators. The program will generate three identical tables (starting from 1 kilometer through the input value) for one number input using the while loop for the first set of calculations, the for loop for the second, and the do loop for the third. I've written the entire program, however I'm having a bit of a problem with getting it to recognize an input with a decimal component. • Adding new records in Access without wrecking the form

  I'm working on a simple Access 2003 application to keep track of things that need to be done for clients for some colleagues. Each colleague has a set of clients, and each client has a set of actions that need to be taken by a certain date. I've set up a form that consists of a combobox for client ID (indexed), a drop-down for the person who is handling that client's case, and a button for adding new clients (a standard Access-created Add Record button). The actions are listed in a subform below these three elements. The problem I've run into is that the first person I tested this on clicked the button to add a new record, then didn't fill it out and tried to select another client from the drop-down list. Access interprets this as an attempt to set the selected Client ID as the ID for the new record and rightfully throws an error for duplicate primary keys. I can think of a couple of ways around this problem, but I'd much rather hear your elegant solutions than kludge together some junk in a language I don't know. Let me know if you have any questions. • Java Inheritance doubt in parameterised collection

  It's obvious that a parent class's object can hold a reference to a child, but does this not hold true in case of parameterised collection ?? eg: Car class is parent of Sedan So public void doSomething(Car c){ ... } public void caller(){ Sedan s = new Sedan(); doSomething(s); } is obviously valid But public void doSomething(Collection<Car> c){ ... } public void caller(){ Collection<Sedan> s = new ArrayList<Sedan>(); doSomething(s); } Fails to compile Can someone please point out why? and also, how to implement such a scenario where a function needs to iterate through a Collection of parent objects, modifying only the fields present in parent class, using parent class methods, but the calling methods (say 3 different methods) pass the collection of three different subtypes..   Hi, I'm having a problem with an HQL query Three classes ClassOne is my BusinessObject public class ClassOne { private int id; private int status; private Set<ClassTwo> classTwos; + other fields/getters/setters/constructor etc } ClassTwo is referenced in a set of ClassOne and is kind of the history of an object of ClassOne public class ClassTwo { private int id; private int oldStatus; private int newStatus; private String message; //+ getters/setters/constructor etc } ClassThree is my DTO/VO with just one classTwo (not the whole history) public class ClassThree { private int id; private int status; private ClassTwo classTwo; public ClassThree(int pId, int pStatus, ClassTwo pClassTwo) { id=pId; status=pStatus; classTwo=pClassTwo; } //+ getters/setters etc } Now I'd like to create an HQL query like this: I'd like to get all objects of ClassThree with a certain status and if it exists the newest ClassTwo with a certain newStatus. For example: I'd like to get all the DTOs (ClassThree) of ClassOne whose status is now 1, but earlier in their history it has been 2 and I'd like to have the latest ClassTwo object which has 2 as newStatus. SELECT new ClassThree(c1.id, c1.status, c2) FROM ClassOne c1 LEFT JOIN c1.classtwos c2 (...) and (...) is where I don't know what to do, I'm not even sure if it's a join / join fetch Looked around and tried quite a lot already, but no clue. Especially with the join fetch I get some Hibernate errors like org.hibernate.QueryException: query specified join fetching, but the owner of the fetched association was not present in the select list. Fetching the BusinessObject like that is no problem SELECT distinct(c1) FROM ClassOne c1 LEFT OUTER JOIN FETCH c1.classtwos c2 and I get the ClassTwos as my field.   thanks for your time first...after all the searching on google, github and here, and got more confused about the big words(partition/shard/fedorate),I figure that I have to describe the specific problem I met and ask around. My company's databases deals with massive users and orders, so we split databases and tables in various ways, some are described below: way database and table name shard by (maybe it's should be called partitioned by?) YZ.X db_YZ.tb_X order serial number last three digits YYYYMMDD. db_YYYYMMDD.tb date YYYYMM.DD db_YYYYMM.tb_ DD date too The basic concept is that databases and tables are seperated acording to a field(not nessissarily the primary key), and there are too many databases and too many tables, so that writing or magically generate one database.yml config for each database and one model for each table isn't possible or at least not the best solution. I looked into drnic's magic solutions, and datafabric, and even the source code of active record, maybe I could use ERB to generate database.yml and do database connection in around filter, and maybe I could use named_scope to dynamically decide the table name for find, but update/create opertions are bounded to "self.class.quoted_table_name" so that I couldn't easily get my problem solved. And even I could generate one model for each table, because its amount is up to 30 most. But this is just not DRY! What I need is a clean solution like the following DSL: class Order < ActiveRecord::Base shard_by :order_serialno do |key| [get_db_config_by(key), #because some or all of the databaes might share the same machine in a regular way or can be configed by a hash of regex, and it can also be a const get_db_name_by(key), get_tb_name_by(key), ] end end Can anybody enlight me?   Using a three-tier architecture, I have a list of objects List<object> careerList = new List<object>(); ModuleDTO module = new ModuleDTO(); careerList = module.getDegreeCodeByQualification(qualificationCode); which I then add to a gridview like so: gridViewMaster.DataSource = careerList; gridViewMaster.DataBind(); What I'd like to do is then enable paging on the gridview. My gridview so far is: <asp:GridView ID="gridViewMaster" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" GridLines="None" BorderWidth="1px" CellPadding="2" DataKeyNames="Grouping" ForeColor="Black" onrowdatabound="gridViewMaster_RowDataBound" CssClass="mGrid" PagerStyle-CssClass="pgr" AlternatingRowStyle-CssClass="alt" OnPageIndexChanging="gridView_PageIndexChanging" AllowPaging="True" > Is it possible to do enable paging on a list's without having to change that list to a Datatable or Dataview? • breaking datetime into constituent parts ASP.NET MVC form

  hi guys, i have searched the web relentlessly for this and have not found anything - which is surprising because i would think it is such a common scenario! Basically, on my model i have a DateTime field which i wish the user to populate through a form. I am using the Html helper to render all other parts of the form (along with validation) So this question is in two parts... Html Helper Firstly, is there any way to use the Html helper to split the DateTime field to be rendered as the three constituent parts of a date: day, month, year (since i do not care about the time part). This could be rendered as text boxes, drop down lists or a combination of both. Model Binding And then when the form is posted, what is the best approach for binding back up to the model? I have seen Scott Hanselmann's solution to this, but it seems a little bloated for what i need - i was hoping for a slightly more elegant solution. Is it recommended to extend DefaultModelBinder and set that as default binder (since all dates would be handled in this way) or write a class that implements IModelBionder and set it as the default binder for the DateTime type? Thanks for all the help in advance :-) i'm loving MVC but it's infuriating me that something so trivial is causing so much headaches!

• How can one enforce calling a base class function after derived class constructor?

  I'm looking for a clean C++ idiom for the following situation: class SomeLibraryClass { public: SomeLibraryClass() { /* start initialization */ } void addFoo() { /* we are a collection of foos */ } void funcToCallAfterAllAddFoos() { /* Making sure this is called is the issue */ } }; class SomeUserClass : public SomeLibraryClass { public: SomeUserClass() { addFoo(); addFoo(); addFoo(); // SomeUserClass has three foos. } }; class SomeUserDerrivedClass : public SomeUserClass { public: SomeUserDerrivedClass() { addFoo(); // This one has four foos. } }; So, what I really want is for SomeLibraryClass to enforce the calling of funcToCallAfterAllAddFoos at the end of the construction process. The user can't put it at the end of SomeUserClass::SomeUserClass(), that would mess up SomeUserDerrivedClass. If he puts it at the end of SomeUserDerrivedClass, then it never gets called for SomeUserClass. To further clarify what I need, imagine that /* start initialization */ acquires a lock, and funcToCallAfterAllAddFoos() releases a lock. The compiler knows when all the initializations for an object are done, but can I get at that information by some nice trick?

• VB.NET Update Access Database with DataTable

  I've been perusing some hep forums and some help books but cant seem to get my head wrapped around this. My task is to read data from two text files and then load that data into an existing MS Access 2007 database. So here is what i'm trying to do: Read data from first text file and for every line of data add data to a DataTable using CarID as my unique field. Read data from second text file and look for existing CarID in DataTable if exists update that row. If it doesnt exist add a new row. once im done push the contents of the DataTable to the database. Is that not a waste of resources? Should i be trying something different if i want to update with new records? Once Im done with the first text file i then go to my next text file. Whats the best approach here: To First look for an existing record based on CarNum or to create a second table and then merge the two at the end? Finally when the DataTable is done being populated and im pushing it to the database i want to make sure that if records already exist with three primary fields (DriveDate, DCode, and CarNum) that they get updated with new fields and if it doesn't exist then those records get appended. • nullable bool is being passed to the controller null all the time regardless of the value

  I'm trying to pass a nullable bool to my controller. But when I pass the bool value from my view to the controller, it's being passed null all the time regardless of the value it has in my view. But my intention is to use nullable bool to have three options: null (when user doesn't touch the checkbox), true(checked) and false(unchecked). I know it sounds not smart and silly, but I'm just trying to figure out how nullable bool is working, and what is the intention of having such a thing in C# (I'm new with C#). I was wondering if it is possible to do so with just checkbox and without the use of dropdownlist or radio buttons.

To get this to work, I've defined a parametrized Pixel trait with a few methods that should be able to get used with any Pixel subclass. (For now, I'm only interested in operations that work on the same Pixel type.)   I am trying to troubleshoot this code and am running into a dead-end, so I thought I would ask my first question here. I have three questions: 1) What is the best approach to embed an mp4 for an iPhone specific view, preferably without using Javascript? 2) Are there any preferred practices to debug code on an iPhone? 3) Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my specific code below? I should mention upfront that the variable $fileName does indeed contain the correct info, I've just omitted that portion of the code. Also, the poster image does flicker for a brief moment before I receive the greyed out, broken QuickTime image so that is an indication that this is partially working. • How to access variables in shared memory

The segment is created and a pointer is attached, but when I try to access the values of the variables (whether changing, printing, etc.) I get a segmentation fault.   I downloaded JBoss 5.1 and unzipped to ~/jboss/ such that JBoss is installed into: ~/jboss/jboss-5.1.0.GA/ I run the default deployment by using the following command found in jboss/jboss-5.1.0.GA/bin ./run.sh -c default While JBoss starts (http://127.0.0.1:8080/), admin-console is not deployed.   I have a file: <xml> <component>something <system>somethingDeeper <value>somethingDeepest</value> </system> </component> <component>somethinfDifferent <value>somethingDifferentDeeper</value> </component> <value>somethingNew</value> </xml> So i want to distinguish what is inside another tag (ex. <system>) what is not. How to do this with NSXMLParser ? I currently use BOOL ivar's but this is a lot of tags and this is not as elegant as i want it to be. I know that NSXMLParser is a SAX parser and i understand that. In above example I will be enter to didEndElement method three times with: elementName equal value Is there a more elegant way to distinguish what entry was from <component> tag above what not?

  post same question at apple developer forum ,too hi first sorry that my english is poor.. i want develop iphone application that playing musical instrument like 'ocarina' but don't need blow mic features. so first i tried to find that how implementation 'virtual musical instrument ' in iphone development. the during the decide implementation using 'Audio Unit' to report this article (link) so i want two kind of questions. i recognize that the 'musical instrument' can be divided into three sound that 'attack', 'sustain' , 'release'. 'decay' maybe included (link) . How implementation when audio unit base 'AUInstrumentBase' each sound ? i download sample 'SinSynth' (link) . i want play note this instrument unit for analyze source and study. Is there way to using AULab? expected the way using MIDI input . but i don't have MIDI. in addition, i wonder that i would think it right the way. to ask the advice... thank for reading poor english my article.

  I always think of xml like a set data structure. Ie: <class> <person>john</person> <person>sarah</person> </class> Is equivalent to: <class> <person>sarah</person> <person>john</person> </class> Question One: Are these two things logicly equivalant? Are you allowed to make things like this in xml? <methodCall> <param>happy</param> <param>sad</param> </methodCall> Or do you need to do it like this: <methodCall> <param arg="1">happy</param> <param arg="2">sad</param> </methodCall> Question Two: Are these two things logically equivalent? Question Three: Is xml usually treated like a set or a list?

• Rails: How do I validate against this code that I put into the lib/ directory?

  Having a bit of difficulty finding out the proper way to mix in code that I put into the lib/ directory for Rails 2.3.5. I have several models that require phone validation. I had at least three models that used the same code, so I wanted to keep things DRY and moved it out to the lib/ directory. I used to have code like this in each model: validate :phone_is_valid Then I'd have a phone_is_valid method in the model: protected def phone_is_valid # process a bunch of logic errors.add_to_base("invalid phone") if validation failed end I moved this code out into lib/phones/ and in lib/phones I have lib/phones/phone_validation.rb, and in there I copy pasted the phone_is_valid method. My question is, how do I mix this into all of my models now? And does my validate :phone_is_valid method remain the same or does that change? I want to make sure that the errors.add_to_base method continues to function as it did before while keeping everything DRY. I also created another file in lib/phones/ called lib/phones/phone_normalize.rb. Again, many models need the value input by the user to be normalized. Meaning turn (555) 222-1212 to 5552221212 or something similar. Can I invoke that simply by invoking Phones::Phone_Normalize::normalize_method(number)? I suppose I'm confused on the following: How to use the lib directory for validation How to use the lib directory for commonly shared methods that return values

• [PHP] Local/Dev/Live deployment - best workflow

  Hello, situation We our little company with 3 people, each has a localhost webserver and most projects (previous and current) are on one PC network shared disk. We have virtual server, where some of our clients' sites and our site. Our standard workflow is: Coder PC ? Programmer localhost ? dev domain (client.company.com) ? live version (client.com) It often happens, that there are two or three guys working on same projects at the same time - one is on dev version, two are on localhost. When finished, we try to synchronize the files on dev version and ideally not to mess up any files, which *knock knock * doesn't happen often. And then one of us deploys dev version on live webserver. question we are looking for a way to simplify this workflow while updating websites - ideally some sort of diff uploader or VCS probably (Git/SVN/VCS/...), but we are not completely sure where to begin or what way would be ideal, therefore I ask you, fellow stackoverflowers for your experience with website / application deployment and recommended workflow. We probably will also need to use Mac in process, so if it won't be a problem, that would be even better. Thank you
