• ODI 11g – How to Load Using Partition Exchange

  Here we will look at how to load large volumes of data efficiently into the Oracle database using a mixture of CTAS and partition exchange loading. The example we will leverage was posted by Mark Rittman a couple of years back on Interval Partitioning, you can find that posting here. The best thing about ODI is that you can encapsulate all those ‘how to’ blog posts and scripts into templates that can be reused – the templates are of course Knowledge Modules. The interface design to mimic Mark's posting is shown below; The IKM I have constructed performs a simple series of steps to perform a CTAS to create the stage table to use in the exchange, then lock the partition (to ensure it exists, it will be created if it doesn’t) then exchange the partition in the target table. You can find the IKM Oracle PEL.xml file here. The IKM performs the follows steps and is meant to illustrate what can be done; So when you use the IKM in an interface you configure the options for hints (for parallelism levels etc), initial extent size, next extent size and the partition variable;   The KM has an option where the name of the partition can be passed in, so if you know the name of the partition then set the variable to the name, if you have interval partitioning you probably don’t know the name, so you can use the FOR clause. In my example I set the variable to use the date value of the source data FOR (TO_DATE(''01-FEB-2010'',''dd-MON-yyyy'')) Using a variable lets me invoke the scenario many times loading different partitions of the same target table. Below you can see where this is defined within ODI, I had to double single-quote the strings since this is placed inside the execute immediate tasks in the KM; Note also this example interface uses the LKM Oracle to Oracle (datapump), so this illustration uses a lot of the high performing Oracle database capabilities – it uses Data Pump to unload, then a CreateTableAsSelect (CTAS) is executed on the external table based on top of the Data Pump export. This table is then exchanged in the target. The IKM and illustrations above are using ODI 11.1.1.6 which was needed to get around some bugs in earlier releases with how the variable is handled...as far as I remember.

I read this page today and it explains something cleverly done: But I wasn't about to write out all these boring predicates myself, so I defined a function that, given a list of words, builds up the text for such a predicate automatically, and then evals it to produce a function. Which just looks like defmacro to me. Is eval the defmacro of javascript? Could it be used as such?

• WebCenter Spaces 11g PS2 Template Customization

  Recently, we have been involved in a WebCenter Spaces customization project. Customer sent us a prototype website in HTML, and we had to transform Spaces to set the same look&feel as in the prototype.Protoype:First of all, we downloaded a Virtual Machine with WebCenter Spaces 11g PS2, same version as customer's. The next step was to download ExtendWebCenterSpaces application. This is a webcenter application that customizes several elements of WebCenter Spaces: templates, skins, landing page, etc. jDeveloper configuration is needed, we followed steps described in Extended Guide, this blog was helpful too. . After that, we deployed the application using WebLogic console, we created a new group space and assigned the ExtendedWebCenterSpaces template (portalCentricSiteTemplate) to it. The result was this:As you may see there is a big difference with the prototype, which meant a lot of work to do from our side.So we needed to create a new Spaces template with its skin.Using jDeveloper, we created a new template based on the default template. We removed all menus we did not need and inserted 'include'  tags for header, breadcrumb and footers. Each of these elements was defined in an isolated jspx file.In the beginning, we faced a problem: we had to add code from prototype (in plain HTML) to jspx templates (JSF language). We managed to workaround this issue using 'verbatim' tags with 'CDATA' surrounding HTML code in header, breadcrumb and footers.Once the template was modified, we added css styles to the default skin. So we had some styles from portalCentricSiteTemplate plus styles from customer's prototype.Then, we re-deployed the application, assigned this template to a new group space and checked the result. After testing, we usually found issues, so we had to do some modifications in the application, then it was necessary to re-deploy the application and restart Spaces server. Due to this fact, the testing process takes quite a bit of time.Added to the template and skin customization, we also customized the Landing Page using this application and Members task flow using another application: SpacesTaskflowCustomizationApplication. I will talk about this task flow customization in a future entry.After some issues and workarounds, eventually we managed to get this look&feel in Spaces:P.S. In this customization I was working with Francisco Vega and Jose Antonio Labrada, consultants from Oracle Malaga International Consulting Centre.

• JavaScript in different browsers

  Adventures with JavaScript rendered in IE 8, Chrome 15, and Firefox 8.0 I have written a little monogram about the advantages of Math and wrote a few JavaScript applications to demonstrate them. I was a bit careless and used elements on the page in my JavaScript without using any of the GetElementsByXXXX methods to identify them.  Say I had a text box named tbSeqNum into which I entered a number to be used in a computation. In my code I simply referred to its value by using it directly. Like here: Function Blah() {                 return tbSeqNum.value; } This ran fine in IE8. In IE, the elements are available as global variables. This is not the case in either Firefox or Chrome. In there one has to create the variable and only then use it. Assuming I also used tbSeqNum as the element’s ID, this works: Function Blah() {                 return GetElementById(“tbSeqNum”).value; } Naturally this corrected function also works in IE, so be warned. Also, coming from windows programming (I am long in the tooth and programmed long before the internet), I have a habit of putting an “Exit” button on my pages and setting their onclick to: onclick=”window.close()”. Again, this works fine in IE. In Firefox and chrome, it does not! There you can only close a window that you opened in the code. A window that was opened by navigation to a URL will not close.  Before I deployed mu code to my website, I painfully removed all my Exit buttons. But my greatest surprise came when I tested my pages in the various browsers. In my code I do a comparison on the performance of two algorithms used to solve the same problem. One is brute force, the other uses a mathematical formula. The compare functions runs each many times and displays the time it took for each and also the ratio. Chrome runs JavaScript between 5 and 10 times faster than Firefox and between 50 and 100 times faster that IE. Wow!!! This difference is especially remarkable when the code uses iteration. I suspect that the JS engines in Chrome and Firefox simply cache the result of a function and if it is called again with the same parameters, it returns the cached result. To see it in action play run the “How Many Squares” page in www.mgsltns.com/games.htm The host is running on Unix, so the link is case sensitive. Last Note: IE9 runs JS a bit faster, but still lags behind almost as badly. That’s All Folks!

• Oracle User Productivity Kit Translation

  Oracle's customers just love the User Productivity Kit (UPK). I hear only great things about it from our international customers at the Oracle Usability Advisory Board meetings too. The UPK is the perfect solution for enterprise applications training needs (I previously reviewed a fine book about UPK btw). One question I am often asked is how source content created using the UPK can be translated into another language. I spoke with Peter Maravelias, Principal Product Strategy Manager for UPK about this recently. UPK is already optimized for easy source-target translation already. There is even a solution for re-recording demos. Here's what you can do to get your source content into another language: Use UPK's ability to automatically translate events and actions. UPK comes with XML templates that allow you to accomplish this in 21 languages with a simple publishing action switch. These templates even deal with the tricky business of using gender-based translations. Spanish localization template sample Japanese localization template sample Use the Import and Export localization features to export additional custom content in a format like XLIFF, easily handled by translation tools. You could also export and import in Word format. Re-record the sound (audio) files that go with the recordings, one per screen. UPK's granular approach to the sound files means that timing isn't an option. Retiming demos isn't required. A tip here with sound files and XLFF-exported custom content is to facilitate translation context by avoiding explicit references to actions going on in the screen recordings. A text based storyboard with screenshots accompanying the sound files should also be provided to the translators. Provide a glossary of terms too. Use the re-record option in UPK to record any demo from a translated application. This will allow all the translated UI labels to be automatically captured. You may be required to resize any action events here due to text expansion issues. Of course, you will need translated data in the translated application too, so plan for this in advance. However, source-target language skills aren't required for the re-recording. The UPK Player itself, of course, is also available from Oracle along with content and doc in 21 languages. The Developer and Setup is also translated in a smaller number of languages. Check the Oracle UPK website for latest details. UPK is a super solution for global enterprise applications training deployments allowing source content to be translated into multiple languages easily.   Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/terje/archive/2014/06/11/converting-projects-to-use-automatic-nuget-restore.aspxDownload tool In version 2.7 of NuGet automatic nuget restore was introduced, meaning you no longer need to distort your msbuild project files with nuget target information.   Visual Studio and TFS 2013 build have this enabled by default.  However, if your project was created before this was introduced, and/or if you have used the “Enable NuGet Package Restore” afterwards, you now have a series of unwanted things in your projects, and a series of project files that have been modified – and – you no longer neither want nor need this !  You might also get into some unwanted issues due to these modifications.  This is a MSBuild modification that was needed only before NuGet 2.7 ! So: DON’T USE THIS FUNCTION !!! There is an issue https://nuget.codeplex.com/workitem/4019 on this on the NuGet project site to get this function removed, renamed or at least moved farther away from the top level (please help vote it up!).  The response seems to be that it WILL BE removed, around version 3.0. This function does nothing you need after the introduction of NuGet 2.7.  What is also unfortunate is the naming of it – it implies that it is needed, it is not, and what is worse, there is no corresponding function to remove what it does ! So to fix this use the tool named IFix, that will fix this issue for you   - all free of course, and the code is open source.  Also report issues there:  https://github.com/OsirisTerje/IFix    IFix information DOWNLOAD HERE This command line tool installs using an MSI, and add itself to the system path.  If you work in a team, you will probably need to use the  tool multiple times.  Anyone in the team may at any time use the “Enable NuGet Package Restore” function and mess up your project again.  The IFix program can be run either in a  check modus, where it does not write anything back – it only checks if you have any issues, or in a Fix mode, where it will also perform the necessary fixes for you. The IFix program is used like this: IFix <command> [-c/--check] [-f/--fix]  [-v/--verbose] The command in this case is “nugetrestore”.  It will do a check from the location where it is being called, and run through all subfolders from that location. So  “IFix nugetrestore  --check” , will do the check ,  and “IFix nugetrestore  --fix”  will perform the changes, for all files and folders below the current working directory. (Note that --check  can be replaced with only –c, and --fix with –f, and so on. ) BEWARE: When you run the fix option, all solutions to be affected must be closed in Visual Studio ! So, if you just want to DO it, then: IFix nugetrestore --check to see if you have issues then IFix nugetrestore  --fix to fix them. How does it work IFix nugetrestore  checks and optionally fixes four issues that the older enabling of nuget restore did.  The issues are related to the MSBuild projess, and are: Deleting the nuget.targets file. Deleting the nuget.exe that is located under the .nuget folder Removing all references to nuget.targets in the solution file Removing all properties and target imports of nuget.targets inside the csproj files. IFix fixes these issues in the same sequence. The first step, removing the nuget.targets file is the most critical one, and all instances of the nuget.targets file within the scope of a solution has to be removed, and in addition it has to be done with the solution closed in Visual Studio.  If Visual Studio finds a nuget.targets file, the csproj files will be automatically messed up again. This means the removal process above might need to be done multiple times, specially when you’re working with a team, and that solution context menu still has the “Enable NuGet Package Restore” function.  Someone on the team might inadvertently do this at any time. It can be a good idea to add this check to a checkin policy – if you run TFS standard version control, but that will have no effect if you use TFS Git version control of course. So, better be prepared to run the IFix check from time to time. Or, even better, install IFix on your build servers, and add a call to IFix nugetrestore --check in the TFS Build script.    How does it look As a first example I have run the IFix program from the top of a set of git repositories, so it spans multiple repositories with multiple solutions. The result from the check option is as follows: We see the four red lines, there is one for each of the four checks we talked about in the previous section. The fact that they are red, means we have that particular issue. The first section (above the first red text line) is the nuget targets section.  Notice  No.1, it says it has found no paths to copy.  What IFix does here is to check if there are any defined paths to other nuget galleries.  If there are, then those are copied over to the nuget.config file, where is where it should be in version 2.7 and above.   No.2 says it has found the particular nuget.targets file,  No.3  states it HAS found some other nuget galleries defines in the targets file, which then it would like to copy to the config.file. No.4 is the section for nuget.exe files, and list those it has found, and which it would like to delete. No 5 states it has found a reference to nuget.targets in the solution file.  This reference comes from the fact that the .nuget folder is a solution folder, and the items within are described in the solution file. It then checks the csproj files, and as can be seen from the last red line, it ha found issues in 96 out of 198 csproj files.  There are two possible issues in a csproj files.  No.6 is the first one, and the most common and most important one, an “Import project” section.  This is the section that calls the nuget.targets files.  No.7 is another issue, which seems to sometimes be there, sometimes not, it is a RestorePackages property, which also should go away. Now, if we run the IFix nugetrestore –fix command, and then the check again after that, the result is: All green !

• Installed Ubuntu 14.04LTS

  On my laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 8.1. Felt I needed to see the competition for myself to establish which was a better OS. So I followed the channels to dual boot. All seemed fine and I accessed Ubuntu with no issues after selecting this from the menu to select the OS. I should add that the boot method was changed to legacy. However, since using Ubuntu, I no longer have the ability to select the OS. The laptop simply logs straight into Ubuntu. I therefore attempted to access the recovery options, only it appears the Windows 8 bootloader has somehow been corrupted as I am now told to use the Windows 8 recovery disc (which, as this was pre-installed - I do not have). Left with no other alternative, I have scoured these forums without success, and so I am hoping someone in the know (or who has experienced similar) can help. I have tried boot repair again without success. On rebooting I am only presented with a basic splash screen asking me to select Ubuntu, Memtest, Windows 8 Recovery or Windows 8 Bootloader (The bootloaders again require I insert the disc). However, if I'm to try using Ubuntu again then there is the risk this problem may come back. Again, I did not do anything manually - the installer did everything (with the exception of changing the boot to Legacy to allow the booting of another bootloader). LiveCD works but doesn't give me the options that I've seen here and as mentioned earlier, only boot recovery only gives me the options as mentioned earlier. Also this fails to load via USB (possibly because HDD comes before USB in the boot order?). Being used to a Windows environment, the Ubuntu (and Linux) environment is a dive at a less than comfortable depth at present (but one I fully intend to get to grips with - especially the commands being more common via Terminal). I very much appreciate the help with this guys.

• Executing server validators first before OnClientClick Javascript confirm/alert

  I got to answer a simple question over community forums. Consider this: Suppose you are developing a webpage with few input controls and a submit button. You have placed some server validator controls like RequiredFieldValidator to validate the inputs entered by the user. Once user fill-in all the details and try to submit the page via button click you want to alert/confirm the submission like "Are you sure to modify above details?". You will consider to use javascript on click of the button.Everything seems simple and you are almost done. BUT, when you run the page; you will see that Javascript alert/confirm box is executing first before server validators try to validate the input controls! Well, this is expected behaviour. BUT, this is not you want. Then? The simple answer is: Call Page_ClientValidate() in javascript where you are alerting the submission. Below is the javascript example:    <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">        function ValidateAllValidationGroups() {            if (Page_ClientValidate()) {                return confirm("Are you sure to modify above details?");            }        }    </script>Page_ClientValidate() function tests for all server validators and return bool value depends on whether the page meets defined validation criteria or not. In above example, confirm alert will only popup up if Page_ClientValidate() returns true (if all validations satisfy). You can also specify ValidationGroup inside this function as Page_ClientValidate('ValidationGroup1') to only validate a specific group of validation in your page.        function ValidateSpecificValidationGroup() {            if (Page_ClientValidate('ValidationGroup1')) {                return confirm("Are you sure to modify above details?");            }        }I have attached a sample example with this post here demonstrating both above cases. • Creating a Training Lab on Windows Azure

In order to facilitate the training lab we have a few prerequisites we need to handle. One of the biggest ones is that although the support team all have MSDN accounts the local desktops they work on are not ideal for running most of the labs as we want to give them some additional developer background training around Azure. Some recent Azure announcements really help us in this area: MSDN software can now be used on Azure VM You don't pay for Azure VM's when they are no longer used  Since the support team only have limited experience of Windows Azure and the organisation also have an Enterprise Agreement we decided it would be best value for money to spin up a training lab in a subscription on the EA and then we can turn the machines off when we are done. At the same time we would be able to spin them back up when the users need to do some additional lab work once the training course is completed. In order to achieve this I wanted to create a powershell script which would setup my training lab. The aim was to create 18 VM's which would be based on a prebuilt template with Visual Studio and the Azure development tools. The script I used is described below The Start & Variables The below text will setup the powershell environment and some variables which I will use elsewhere in the script. It will also import the Azure Powershell cmdlets. You can see below that I will need to download my publisher settings file and know some details from my Azure account. At this point I will assume you have a basic understanding of Azure & Powershell so already know how to do this. Im sure if this is of use to anyone you can easily modify it to do other things with the lab environment too. A couple of points to note are that there are some soft limits in Azure about the number of cores and services your subscription can use. You may need to contact the Azure support team to be able to increase this limit. In terms of the real business value of this approach, it was not possible to use the existing desktops to do the training on, and getting some internal virtual machines would have been relatively expensive and time consuming for our ops team to do. With the Azure option we are able to spin these machines up for a temporary period during the training course and then throw them away when we are done. We expect the costing of this test lab to be very small, especially considering we have EA pricing. As a ball park I think my 18 lab VM training environment will cost in the region of $80 per day on our EA. This is a fraction of the cost of the creation of a single VM on premise.
