I checked crontab for scheduled tasks, there is nothing in there but still these rules appear every minute... please help!

• How to Achieve OC4J RMI Load Balancing

  This is an old, Oracle SOA and OC4J 10G topic. In fact this is not even a SOA topic per se. Questions of RMI load balancing arise when you developed custom web applications accessing human tasks running off a remote SOA 10G cluster. Having returned from a customer who faced challenges with OC4J RMI load balancing, I felt there is still some confusions in the field how OC4J RMI load balancing work. Hence I decide to dust off an old tech note that I wrote a few years back and share it with the general public. Here is the tech note: Overview A typical use case in Oracle SOA is that you are building web based, custom human tasks UI that will interact with the task services housed in a remote BPEL 10G cluster. Or, in a more generic way, you are just building a web based application in Java that needs to interact with the EJBs in a remote OC4J cluster. In either case, you are talking to an OC4J cluster as RMI client. Then immediately you must ask yourself the following questions: 1. How do I make sure that the web application, as an RMI client, even distribute its load against all the nodes in the remote OC4J cluster? 2. How do I make sure that the web application, as an RMI client, is resilient to the node failures in the remote OC4J cluster, so that in the unlikely case when one of the remote OC4J nodes fail, my web application will continue to function? That is the topic of how to achieve load balancing with OC4J RMI client. Solutions You need to configure and code RMI load balancing in two places: 1. Provider URL can be specified with a comma separated list of URLs, so that the initial lookup will land to one of the available URLs. 2. Choose a proper value for the oracle.j2ee.rmi.loadBalance property, which, along side with the PROVIDER_URL property, is one of the JNDI properties passed to the JNDI lookup.(http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28958/rmi.htm#BABDGFBI) More details below: About the PROVIDER_URL The JNDI property java.name.provider.url's job is, when the client looks up for a new context at the very first time in the client session, to provide a list of RMI context The value of the JNDI property java.name.provider.url goes by the format of a single URL, or a comma separate list of URLs. A single URL. For example: opmn:ormi://host1:6003:oc4j_instance1/appName1 A comma separated list of multiple URLs. For examples:  opmn:ormi://host1:6003:oc4j_instanc1/appName, opmn:ormi://host2:6003:oc4j_instance1/appName, opmn:ormi://host3:6003:oc4j_instance1/appName When the client looks up for a new Context the very first time in the client session, it sends a query against the OPMN referenced by the provider URL. The OPMN host and port specifies the destination of such query, and the OC4J instance name and appName are actually the “where clause” of the query. When the PROVIDER URL reference a single OPMN server Let's consider the case when the provider url only reference a single OPMN server of the destination cluster. In this case, that single OPMN server receives the query and returns a list of the qualified Contexts from all OC4Js within the cluster, even though there is a single OPMN server in the provider URL. A context represent a particular starting point at a particular server for subsequent object lookup. For example, if the URL is opmn:ormi://host1:6003:oc4j_instance1/appName, then, OPMN will return the following contexts: appName on oc4j_instance1 on host1 appName on oc4j_instance1 on host2, appName on oc4j_instance1 on host3,  (provided that host1, host2, host3 are all in the same cluster) Please note that One OPMN will be sufficient to find the list of all contexts from the entire cluster that satisfy the JNDI lookup query. You can do an experiment by shutting down appName on host1, and observe that OPMN on host1 will still be able to return you appname on host2 and appName on host3. When the PROVIDER URL reference a comma separated list of multiple OPMN servers When the JNDI propery java.naming.provider.url references a comma separated list of multiple URLs, the lookup will return the exact same things as with the single OPMN server: a list of qualified Contexts from the cluster. The purpose of having multiple OPMN servers is to provide high availability in the initial context creation, such that if OPMN at host1 is unavailable, client will try the lookup via OPMN on host2, and so on. After the initial lookup returns and cache a list of contexts, the JNDI URL(s) are no longer used in the same client session. That explains why removing the 3rd URL from the list of JNDI URLs will not stop the client from getting the EJB on the 3rd server. About the oracle.j2ee.rmi.loadBalance Property After the client acquires the list of contexts, it will cache it at the client side as “list of available RMI contexts”.  This list includes all the servers in the destination cluster. This list will stay in the cache until the client session (JVM) ends. The RMI load balancing against the destination cluster is happening at the client side, as the client is switching between the members of the list. Whether and how often the client will fresh the Context from the list of Context is based on the value of the  oracle.j2ee.rmi.loadBalance. The documentation at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B31017_01/web.1013/b28958/rmi.htm#BABDGFBI list all the available values for the oracle.j2ee.rmi.loadBalance. Value Description client If specified, the client interacts with the OC4J process that was initially chosen at the first lookup for the entire conversation. context Used for a Web client (servlet or JSP) that will access EJBs in a clustered OC4J environment. If specified, a new Context object for a randomly-selected OC4J instance will be returned each time InitialContext() is invoked. lookup Used for a standalone client that will access EJBs in a clustered OC4J environment. If specified, a new Context object for a randomly-selected OC4J instance will be created each time the client calls Context.lookup(). Please note the regardless of the setting of oracle.j2ee.rmi.loadBalance property, the “refresh” only occurs at the client. The client can only choose from the "list of available context" that was returned and cached from the very first lookup. That is, the client will merely get a new Context object from the “list of available RMI contexts” from the cache at the client side. The client will NOT go to the OPMN server again to get the list. That also implies that if you are adding a node to the server cluster AFTER the client’s initial lookup, the client would not know it because neither the server nor the client will initiate a refresh of the “list of available servers” to reflect the new node. About High Availability (i.e. Resilience Against Node Failure of Remote OC4J Cluster) What we have discussed above is about load balancing. Let's also discuss high availability. This is how the High Availability works in RMI: when the client use the context but get an exception such as socket is closed, it knows that the server referenced by that Context is problematic and will try to get another unused Context from the “list of available contexts”. Again, this list is the list that was returned and cached at the very first lookup in the entire client session.

  I have a j2ee application hosted on jboss and linux platform. When I try to access the application , I see following error in server.log file. ORA-12705: invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified When I point the same jboss instance to a different schema, the application works fine. I tried to go through few forum and found that the NLS parameter settings are fine. Can anyone help.   Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any idea in how to generate a signed CA cert and key using openssl? I have found this website (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/secure-create-certs.html) to generate the client and server certs for mysql server but the example is a self-signed certificate. I use the following command for running the server and client using openssl and the generated certs and keys: openssl s_server -accept 6502 -cert server-cert.pem -key server-key.pem -CAfile ca-cert.pem -www openssl s_client -connect 192.168.1.92:6502 -cert client-cert.pem -key client-key.pem -CAfile ca-cert.pem The error output I get is "Verify return code: 18 (self signed certificate)". • Why does cd print when run in command substitution?

  If I use the 'cd' BASH built-in in a command substitution, it prints extra stuff to stdout, but only when piped to, eg., less. $ echo `cd .` # The output is a single newline, appended by echo. $ echo `cd .` | less # less displays: ESC]2;my.hostname.com - tmp/testenv^G (END) What's going on there? This behavior isn't documented in the bash man page for cd. Obviously, running just 'cd' in a command substitution is silly, but something like NEWDIR=`cd mypath; pwd` could be useful. I solved this by instead using NEWVAR=`cd mypath > /dev/null 2>&1; pwd` but I still want to know what's going on. • grep pattern interpretted differently in 2 different systems with same grep version

  We manufacture a linux appliance for data centers, and all are running fedora installed from the same kickstart process. There are different hardware versions, some with IDE hard drives and some SCSI, so the filesystems may be at /dev/sdaN or /dev/hdaN. We have a web interface into these appliances that show disk usage, which is generated using "df | grep /dev/*da". This generally works for both hardware versions, giving an output like follows: /dev/sda2 5952284 3507816 2137228 63% / /dev/sda5 67670876 9128796 55049152 15% /data /dev/sda1 101086 11976 83891 13% /boot However, for one machine, we get the following result from that command: Binary file /dev/sda matches It seems that its grepping files matching /dev/*da for an unknown pattern for some reason, only on this box that is seemingly identical in grep version, packages, kernel, and hardware. I switched the grep pattern to be "/dev/.da" and everything works as expected on this troublesome box, but I hate not knowing why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas? Or perhaps some other tests to try?

• Can't adjust backlight on an Nvidia 335m GT

  I have a laptop mySN QMG6 / Chiligreen Mobilitas NW which is Quanta TW9 barebone with intel i3 and nvidia 335m GT onboard. On ubuntu distros 10.04, 10.10, 11.04 and 11.10 i had problem with changing screen backlight with nouveau and nvidia drivers. FN+F4/F5 buttons did not change my brightness. I tried to edit xorg.conf, adding Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Also tried to add some lines to grub acpi_osi="Linux" acpi_backlight=vendor Neither worked for me. Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 beta2 and... With nouveau driver my FN key works, and changes the brightness (is it a new 3.0.22 linux kernel, or patched nouveau driver, i don't know). This is a big step forward. But, when installing proprietary nvidia driver (295.33) FN button stops working and i can't change brightness. I also tried workaround with xorg and grub with no result. Tried to install acpi from apt - no result. Is there anything left to try? I really need that nvidia driver working with FN keys, as i would like to have a working 3D acceleration. P.S. Does the nouveau driver has 3d acceleration like nvidia drivers??? If there is need to provide some log data, please write what should i print, as i'm a bit new to Ubuntu. P.P.S. Same problems i had with other Linux distros (Mint, Fedora and others) P.P.P.S. Other FN buttons work with both drivers (Mute, VOL UP/DOWN, WiFi on/off, Bluetooth, Sleep, Start/Pause, Stop, Next/Prev song) Some new thoughts... CONFIG_BACKLIGHT_GENERIC=m could this be an issue? • Laptop wakes from sleep, once, due to audio controller (Windows 7)

  The laptop is a recent Dell XPS 15z and the problem is as follows (reproducible about 90% of tries): put laptop to sleep using either Start-Sleep or closing the lid laptop goes to sleep after about 5 seconds, but instantly wakes again showing a black screen (touching the keyboard or moving the mouse shows the login screen one normally gets after wake) login again, put laptop to sleep latop stays in sleep mode output of powercfg -lastwake after the first instant wake shows the audio controller is responsible. Why would that be, why only the first try, and how to fix this? • How to tell if PAE is hurting me?

  I have a couple of servers with 20-30 GB RAM that are running (a variant of) RHEL4. They are currently running the SMP i386 kernel, not x64, not even the hugemem kernel. This means LowMem is confined to < 1G, and thus dentry_cache and ext3_inode_cache to 100M or so each. How can I tell if this is a problem? • Linux: multiple network connections - 3G/4G / Wifi / LAN / etc; how can i set a preferred network connection to use?

  I've been looking at how I can setup a laptop that has multiple network interfaces, but a problem exists if all the connections are active, i.e. 3G, WiFi and LAN are all connected, I would like it to default to LAN. I would like to set "weights" or "priority" to each connection, so that if the LAN is unplugged, it'll default to WiFi - if its in range and working, otherwise, it'll switch and use the 3G dongle; I've been looking around and I can see that the "metric" counter for route isn't being used for recent kernels. I thought that would be able to set the preferred gateway / connections - but according to the man page: man route: OUTPUT Metric The 'distance' to the target (usually counted in hops). It is not used by recent kernels, but may be needed by routing daemons. So I'm confused, are there any scripts / apps / anything that can detect active network connections, and by way of configuration, send my default gateway network traffic through that interface if its active / alive?

• Cannot run SSH or send commands to /etc/init.d/ssh

  When I attempt to execute any commands such as /etc/init.d/ssh restart or /etc/init.d/ssh start, I get no output. It just goes to the next command line (Ubuntu Hardy). I can even pass in junk parameters such as /etc/init.d/ssh asldkfjalskfdj and i get no warnings or error messages, it just goes to the next line. I can check in my processes: lsof -i :22 and don't see my ssh process. I also don't see my SSH process when i run: netstat -na --inet Any troubleshooting suggestions?

  I have an upstart script that will start a custom jetty server. When I do sudo start [myservice] nothing happens. Subsequently, sudo status [myservice] show it as: [myservice] start/killed, process 3586. Here's the script in /etc/init/[myservice].conf: description "[description]" author "[my name and email]" start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [016] respawn expect fork script sudo -u www-data /path/to/grafserv-start.sh >> /tmp/upstart.log 2>&1 end-script And here is grafserv-start.sh: #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/java -Djetty.port=3070 -jar /path/to/grafserv/trunk/start.jar echo "Done starting GrafServ" I've tried redirecting the output of the script command to a tmp logfile, but that file is never created. When I start it, I just get a hang, until I ^C. Also, I tried running it with strace but that gave me a lot of stuff about sockets.

• NFS Client reports Permission Denied, Server reports Permission Granted

  I have two RedHat 4 Servers. The client is 4.6, the server is 4.5. I'm attempting to mount a share from the server, onto the client via NFS. The /etc/exports configuration is as follows: /opt/data/config bkup(rw,no_root_squash,async) /opt/data/db bkup(rw,no_root_squash,async) exportfs returns these (among other) shares, nfs is running according to ps output. I've been attempting to use autofs on the client, but have opted to just mount the share manually considering the issues I'm having. So, I issue the mount request: mount dist:/opt/data/config /mnt/config mount: dist:/opt/data/config failed, reason given by server: Permission denied Ok, so let's see what the server has to say for itself. May 6 23:17:55 dist mountd[3782]: authenticated mount request from bkup:662 for /opt/data/config (/opt/data/config) It says it allowed the mount to take place. How can I diagnose why the client and server are disagreeing on the result?

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

  I have noticed some error during the Linux boot. They seem to continue to occur after the boot adding lines to the log every few seconds. Once booted this normally does not appear to be causing any problems. However, around 1 in 10 boots results in a kernel panic and the computer has on two or three occasions suddenly rebooted after being powered on for a number of hours. I presume the cause of the reboot is a kernel panic as well. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had Ubuntu installed on the computer for around a year. I have googled around and not found anything useful. I have provided the kernel log lines and the output of smartctl. • How to add nvidia drivers after previous failure with linux mint?

  Before today, I had perfectly good drivers from nvidia for my linux mint (15) box. I decided to update it because my performance in TF2 is less than stellar, and then things went south. I used synaptic to install nvidia-331 and then rebooted, but when I selected Mint in GRUB I waited...and waited...and waited. Nothing happened, but the display stayed on (a completely black video was being output). So I went into recovery mode from GRUB, went to root access, and apt-get remove --purge nvidia*'d my way out of that mess, and installed nvidia-common. Now my performance in graphic intensive stuff (read: games, blender) sucks, so I've been through the same thing a few times trying to re-install nvidia-current. I just want to get it back how it was. • Linux and GeForce 8400 dual monitor

  I'm trying to install a linux distribution on my PC. I have a GeForce 8400 GS with two connected monitors. I tried with Fedora 12 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both 64 and 32 bit) and the live cd cannot boot properly. I don't get a visible error on Ubuntu, it simply hangs up during the boot. With Fedora I get this error: [drm] Modeset on unsupported output type [drm] Table 0x0000 not found for 1/1 using first I tried to disconnect one of the two monitor and was able to install on my HD and boot from there, but if I try to connect the second monitor again I cannot boot. Do I need to install something else? (a driver for my video card for example).
