• REST design: what verb and resource name to use for a filtering service

  I am developing a cleanup/filtering service that has a method that receives a list of objects serialized in xml, and apply some filtering rules to return a subset of those objects. In a REST-ful service, what verb shall I use for such a method? I thought that GET is a natural choice, but I have to put the serialized XML in the body of the request which works but feels incorrect. The other verbs don't seem to fit semantically. What is a good way to define that Service interface? Naming the resource /Cleanup or /Filter seems weird mainly because in the examples I see online, it is always a name rather than a verb being used for resource name. Am I right to feel that REST services are better suited for CRUD operations and you start bending the rules in situations like this service? If yes, am I then making a wrong architectural choice. I've pushed to develop this service in REST-ful style (as opposed to SOAP) for simplicity, but such awkward cases happen a lot and make me feel like I am missing something. Either choosing REST where it shouldn't be used or may be over-thinking some stuff that doesn't really matter? In that case, what really matters?

• Setting up App Engine to receive email addresses with ids in the address

  I am writing an App Engine app that is supposed to receive emails in this form: [email protected] (someID is an alphanumeric ID that I generate). I have this in my web.xml thinking it would catch emails that start with 'addcontact.': <servlet> <servlet-name>addNewContactServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>com.mycompany.server.AddNewContactServlet</servlet- class> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>addNewContactServlet</servlet-name> <url-pattern>/_ah/mail/addcontact.*</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> However, both on my dev machine and on google's servers email is not received. On the dev machine I get this message (I get a similar error in the deployed log) Message send failure HTTP ERROR 404 Problem accessing /_ah/mail/ [email protected]. Reason: NOT_FOUND I can receive email at fully specified addresses or when I use /_ah/mail/* The google documentation made me believe it was possible to include partial email addresses in web.xml. Am I not using the wildcard correctly? Does the period have something to do with it? Can this be done somehow?

• Transforming a TXT file in a list, getting wrong

  I have a txt plain file that has a list of numbers. One number per line, like: 978-972-722-649-8 978-972-722-646-7 978-972-722-627-6 978-972-722-625-2 978-972-722-594-1 etc. This list is on a file called file.txt, was created and saved on TextEdit using Western (ISO Latin 1) encoding. Now I am trying to use Applescript to read this file and transform it on a list. I have this script set myDirectory to path to desktop folder as string set myFile to myDirectory & "file.txt" try set open_file to ¬ open for access file myFile without write permission set myList to read open_file using delimiter return close access open_file on error try close access file open_file end try end try after running this script, myList contains just ONE item and this item is "97" (I suppose that is the first two numbers of the first entry). • Is there an Objective-C algorithm like `transform` of the C++ STL?

  My goal is to have an array that contains all filenames of a specific extension, but without the extension. There's an elegant solution to get all filenames of a specific extension using a predicate filter and instructions on how to split a path into filename and extension, but to combine them I would have to write a loop (not terrible, but not elegant either). Is there a way with Objective-C (may be similar to the predicate mechanism) to apply some function to every element of an array and put the results in a second array, like the transform algorithm of the C++ STL does?

• Reasons for sticking with TEXT, NTEXT and IMAGE instead of (N)VARCHAR(max) and VARBINARY(max)

  TEXT, NTEXT and IMAGE have been deprecated a long time ago and will, eventually, be removed from SQL Server. However, they are not going to be discontinued right away, not even in the next version of SQL Server, so it's not convenient for my enterprise to transform thousands of columns right away, even if it is using SQL Server 2012. What arguments can I use to postpone this migration? I know there are some advantages in using the new types. But I'm strictly looking for reasons not to migrate my data that is already functioning pretty well in the old types.

• Detailstext in TableView from Coredata Iphone

  Hey, that is my first question here at stackoverflow. Let me try to be specific as I can. The project is as follows: I am trying to parse an xml file in an iphone app, which works already. I am saving the parsed data into the CoreData of the Iphone. So far so good: I have two elements of the xml file which I want to show in the tableview as the text and the detailtext. Now the strange behaviour occurs: If I take the data of the Core Data and trying to visualize them in the tableview, then both elements are displayed in seperate cells and not as detailtext of the element. If I am just taking a constant string for the detailtext, then it works, but if I am trying to take for every cell a specific element from the Core Data then it is shown seperately in the tableview. I googled a lot, reading here and there. I dont know which code I should show because I dont have a clue where exactly the mistake could be. Maybe someone can answer that immediately because it is a stupid mistake somewhere, which is common. Thanks for your help.

• XSL(like) declarative language as MVC view over strongtyped model?

  As a huge XSL fan, I am very happy to use xsl as the view in our proprietary MVC framework on ASP.NET. Objects in the model are serialized under the hood using .NET's xml serializer, and we use quite atomic xsl templates to declare how each object or property should transform. For example: <xsl:template match="/Article"> <html> <body> <div class="article"> <xsl:apply-templates /> </div> </body> </html> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="Article/Title"> <h1> <xsl:apply-templates /> </h1> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="@*|text()"> <xsl:copy /> </xsl:template> This mechanism allows us to quickly override default matching templates, like having a template matching on the last item in a list, or the selected one, etc. Also, xsl extension objects in .NET allow us just the bit of extra grip that we need. Common shared templates can be split up and included. However Even though I can ignore the verbosity downside of xsl (because Visual Studio schema intellisense + snippets really is slick, praise to the VS-team), the downside of not having intellisense over strongtyped objects in the model is really something that's bugging me. I've seen ASP.NET MVC + user controls in action and really starting to love it, but I wonder; Is there a way of getting some sort of intellisense over XML that we're iterating over, or do you know of a language that offers the freedom and declarativeness of XSL but has the strongtype/intellisense benefits of say webforms/usercontrols/asp.net.mvc-view? (I probably know the answer: "no", and I'll find myself using Phil Haack's utterly cool mvc shizzle soon...)

• Pseudorandom Number Generation with Specific Non-Uniform Distributions

  Hello all, I'm writing a program that simulates various random walks (with differing distributions). At each timestep, I need randomly generated, two dimensional step distances and angles from the distribution of the random walk. I'm hoping someone can check my understanding of how to generate these random numbers. As I understand it I can use Inverse Transform Sampling as follows: If f(x) is the pdf of our random walk that has a non-uniform distribution, and y is a random number from a uniform distribution. Then if we let f(x) = y and solve to find x then we have a random number from the non-uniform distribution. Is this a feasible solution?

  I am trying to get my first button to update a display number in my view when clicked. This view will have several buttons and "outputs" displayed. When I had set the view to have a TextView with the number set as a string , the number displayed, but I could not figure out how to update the text with a numerical field. That may be my real problem. I have gone through many examples generally referenced from the dev. site (UI, Common Tasks, various samples), and I am still not seeing the connection here... Again, this is simply a try at getting variables to respond to buttons and update on the view. So, a few Q's for anyone that can help; 1) Is there any easier way of doing this (ie. send numerical value to View) ? 2) Why isn't my TextSwitcher displaying the number? 3) Should I be using a TextSwitcher here? 4) Any examples of this you can point me to?

But plain + returns NaN and sum() expects only one parameter. XSLT and XPATH are quite nice, but it goes on my nerves that easy operations like adding two hex values just dont work as easy as it should.

  I am trying to create a simple Icon+Text ListView but it does not work. I am using 2.1 Android SDK.   I have a clickable TextView that I want to give some colors to. But I don't know how. Which is strange since I have written "#000000" in all color fields. But if I remove the setTextColor code, gets the textView a light grey color, and when I press it, it becomes black. But that aren't the colors that I want. So, can anyone help me with this problem? Just to clarify: I want to be able to specify the colors for the text when it's normal, pressed and focused.

• MonoTouch- 'curated' bindings?

  I'm just converting a video player sample to MT and came to this part: self.view.layer.sublayerTransform = CATransform3DMakePerspective(1000); In Monotouch, I've started with: this.View.Layer.SublayerTransform(CATransform3D.... But no perspective option is available. There is a 'scale' and 'rotate' one - does this mean this functionality is unavailable in MT? Or that I need to start creating my own bindings even though this one has been processed by the binding creation tool Xamarin uses? If anyone could advise how I would apply that transform I'd appreciate it. Cheers

• Actionscript flex sockets and telnet

  I am trying to make a flex application where it gets data from a telnet connection and I am running into a weird problem. To give a brief introduction, i want to read data from a process that exposes it through a socket. So if in the shell i type telnet localhost 8651i receive the xml and then the connection is closed (I get the following Connection closed by foreign host.) Anyway i found a simple tutorial online for flex that essentially is a telnet client and one would expect it to work but everything follows Murphy's laws and nothing ever works! Now i have messages being printed in every event handler and all places that i can think off. When i connect to the socket nothing happens, no event handler is triggered even the connect or close handler and if i do the following the socket.connected returns false! I get no errors, try catch raises no exception. I am at a loss as to whats going wrong? socket.connect(serverURL, portNumber); msg(socket.connected.toString()); Is there something about telnet that i do not know and its causing this to not work. Whats more interesting is why none of the events get fired. Another interesting thing is that i have some python code that does the same thing and its able to get the xml back! The following is the python code that works! def getStats(host, port): sock = socket.socket() sock.connect((host, port)) res = sock.recv(1024*1024*1024, socket.MSG_WAITALL) sock.close() return statFunc(res) So i ask you whats going wrong!!!!!! Is there some inherent problem with how flex handles sockets?

• [XNA] Forming bounding box only around visible sprites

  Hi, this site has been really amazing for helping me with game development however I'm unable to find an answer for the following question (nor am I able to solve it on my own). I am trying to do rectangle collision in my game. My idea is to 1) get the original collision bounding rectangle 2) Transform the texture (pos/rot/scale) 3) Factor changes of item into a matrix and then use this matrix to change the original collision bounds of the item. However, my textures contain a lot of transparency, transparency that affect the overall height/width of the texture (I do this to maintain power of two dimensions).   Say I want to create an array of pixel values to pass into the createBitmap method described here. I have three int values r, g, b in the range 0 - 0xff. How do I transform those into a opaque pixel p? Does the alpha channel go in the high byte or the low byte? I googled up the documentation but it only states that: Each pixel is stored on 4 bytes. Each channel (RGB and alpha for translucency) is stored with 8 bits of precision (256 possible values.) This configuration is very flexible and offers the best quality. • Affine Transforms with Demo App

  I have a demo app here https://github.com/rdetert/image-transform-test After importing an image, you can pinch, zoom, rotate the image. What I want to do is save out a 640x480 image (landscape mode) that looks identical to the live preview. So if there are 100px bars of empty space on the sides, I need the same empty bars in the final output (scaled appropriately). This is proving to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I can't quite get it to come out right after days of working on it. The magic method that generates the final image is called -(void)generateFinalImage Good luck! ;)

  Hi, I have the following xml object representing a ImageButton <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ImageButton xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/genreCellItemId" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_gravity="center" android:paddingLeft="5.0dip" android:paddingRight="5.0dip"> </ImageButton> I try to inflate it and add it to a TableRow with the following code : LayoutInflater inflater= this.getLayoutInflater(); TableLayout grid = (TableLayout)findViewById(R.id.bodyTableLayout); TableRow row = (TableRow)inflater.inflate(R.layout.genre_row, null); View myButton = (View)inflater.inflate(R.layout.genre_cell, null); row.addView(tempButton, new TableRow.LayoutParams()); grid.addView(row, new TableLayout.LayoutParams()); Ok so I noticed that it didn't look as expected, so I fire up the Hierarchy Viewere and noticed that the ImageButton's actually have an layout_width = FILL_PARENT instead of WRAP_CONTENT, also the layout_gravity is NONE and there is no padding to be seen... Do, am I inflating it wrongly ? Or is maybe the new TableRow.LayoutParams() part doins omething wrong ?

• How to retrieve all keys (or values) from a std::map?

  This is one of the possible ways I come out: struct RetrieveKey { template <typename T> typename T::first_type operator()(T keyValuePair) const { return keyValuePair.first; } }; map<int, int> m; vector<int> keys; // Retrieve all keys transform(m.begin(), m.end(), back_inserter(keys), RetrieveKey()); // Dump all keys copy(keys.begin(), keys.end(), ostream_iterator<int>(cout, "\n")); Of course, we can also retrieve all values from the map by defining another functor RetrieveValues. Is there any other way to achieve this easily? (I'm always wondering why std::map does not include a member function for us to do so.)
