  • Automatically Connecting to Hidden SSID WiFi Network

    - by Zack
My MacBook Pro will not automatically connect to a Wireless network with a hidden SSID. It makes me select the "Join Other Network..." in the Airport menu (in the system tray), where I need to input the name of the network, then security type, password and wait for it to connect. This is becoming increasingly annoying to have to do every time I come back to my desk. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5 and there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to a specific network, but rather "Preferred Networks." The only network I have set as Preferred that's in range is my home network, and it still doesn't automatically connect. Making the network publicly visible isn't under my control, so I'm stuck with what's currently in place. Reader's Digest version: How do I make my MacBook Pro automatically connect to a WiFi Network with a hidden SSID without having to "configure" it every time I want to connect?

  • Trying to diagnose network problem: ping 127.0.0.1 (or any address) results in error code 1

    - by Mnebuerquo
NIC seems to be working, as windows detects the hardware and has a driver and reports success. DHCP seems to have gotten an ip address, 192.168.1.101. I released and renewed it and it seemed to work normally. I tried ping 127.0.0.1 as first step of testing network configuration. Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data: PING: transmit failed, error code 1. I read somewhere that net helpmsg [error code] would give a human readable name for the error code. net helpmsg 1 says "Incorrect function" I've tried disabling the firewall and antivirus in McAfee SecurityCenter and I still get the same error. Could the firewall/antivirus be breaking it even if disabled? Broadcom Advanced Control Suite 2 is installed, and its network test passes all tests, including ping 192.168.1.1 which is the default gateway. If I try ping 192.168.1.1 from the command prompt I get the error code 1 again. So does anyone have any theories that would explain this problem? Other tests I should try? Thanks!

  • Problems with connecting to wireless network on windows 7

    - by Naveen
I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 (Home premium) 64 bit edition installed on it. I use a Wi-Fi router to browse the net. My problem is, I lose the network connection every 10 minutes or so. The network icon on the system tray shows the refresh icon and the status as "identifying network". The network is fine and works fine with my phone. I saw on the net this may be caused if I have enabled IPv6, so I disabled it but still problem persists. When I look at the event log I see the following entries: "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xXXXXXXXX. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server." I have also installed VirtualBox(32 bit edition) on the laptop. Does anybody any solution to this?

  • Umbraco Permissions Script - Secure Version

    - by Vizioz Limited
Back in May I blogged about how to set Permissions for Umbraco using SetACL to set the appropriate directory permissions based on the installation recommendations.Recently I have been working on a site for a client who wanted every security item to be locked down as tightly as possible. And so I modified the script based on the Umbraco security best practices, I thought I'd share it with everyone, if I have missed anything, or if anyone has any suggestions on how to improve this, please let me know :)Please refer to my previous post regarding the SetAcl command line application that you will need.I suggest you save the following into a batch file called: umbPermSecure.batecho offREM Script to setup the Security Permissions for an Umbraco siteREM This script will give your machine Network Service the minimum rights requiredREM for Umbraco to workREM I suggest you update this script to also remove any users who do not need REM access to the web foldersREM **** Pre-requisites ****REM You will need to download - http://setacl.sourceforge.net/REM It is assumed that you have stored SetACL in a directory called, C:\SetACL ifREM not, you will need to modify the script.REM **** Usage ****REM You need to pass in the path for the root of your Umbraco directoryREM E.g. umbPermSecure.bat C:\inetpub\umbracoroot@echo umbPermSecure.bat - Script to set Umbraco File and Directory Permissions@echo based on the Umbraco Security Best Practices Document (13th March 2009)@echo Published by Chris Houston - 19th October 2009@echo http://blog.vizioz.com@echo Adding READ only access SetACL.exe -on "%1" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\web.config" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\bin" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\umbraco" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"@echo Adding READ and EXECUTE access SetACL.exe -on "%1\app_code" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read_ex" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\usercontrols" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read_ex" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"@echo Adding READ, WRITE and MODIFY access SetACL.exe -on "%1\config" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\css" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\data" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\masterpages" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\media" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\python" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\scripts" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"SetACL.exe -on "%1\xslt" -ot file -actn ace -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:read" -ace "n:%computername%\NETWORK SERVICE;p:change" -actn clear -clr "dacl, sacl" -log "c:\setacl\log.txt"

  • How to Assign a Static IP to an Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Computer

    - by Mysticgeek
If you have a home network with several computers, assigning them static IP addresses can make troubleshooting easier. Today we take a look at switching from DHCP to a static IP in Ubuntu. Assign a Static IP Using Static IPs prevents address conflicts between machines and can allow easier access to them. If you have a small home network and are satisfied with the machines getting their IP address automatically via DHCP, there won’t be anything gained by using static addresses. Using Static IPs isn’t necessarily for the average user, but if you’re a geek who wants to know the address assigned to each machine, it can allow for faster troubleshooting.  To change your Ubuntu machine to a Static IP go to System \ Preferences \ Network Connections. In our example, we’re on a wired system so click on the Wired tab, then select Auto eth0 and click on Edit. Select the IPv4 settings tab, change Method to Manual, click the Add button. Then type in the Static IP Address, Subnet Mask, DNS Servers, and Default Gateway. Then click Apply when you’re finished. Make sure to hit Enter after typing in the Default Gateway otherwise it will revert back to 0.0.0.0 You’ll need to enter in your admin password before the changes go into affect. To verify the changes have been made successfully launch a Terminal session and type in ifconfig at the command prompt, or follow these directions. You also might want to ping the address from another machine to make sure everything is communicating. If you want to assign a Static IP to your Windows machines, check out our article on how to assign a Static IP on Windows systems (make sure to browse the comments as our readers have some good suggestions).  Whether you have a small office or home network set up with a server and several machines, using a Static IP on each device can help you manage them easily. Again, it isn’t for everyone as it really depends on how your network is setup and the way you use it. • Using local DNS and public DNS during site development

    - by ChrisFM
I'm a web designer and I often develop new sites for existing businesses. Sometimes I find it useful to point my DNS address (for my personal computer) to the development servers local DNS (instead of Googles 8.8.8.8 or the default isp's address). I like this as it let's me see that the new site's internal links, etc, operate before switching over the authorative DNS from the old site. However outgoing links (Like a Google map) would not route with my local dns. The first thing I thought was, oh I just need to fill out my DNS directory with Google and every other domain I might need to link to, wait... that sounds insane. I was wondering if anyone could give me insight into a better way or more functional way to get use local DNS addresses when they're available and public supplied DNS address when they are not? Kinda like a DNS to 'roll-over'? Or maybe a completely different approach to development all together. Thanks in advance for your insight. All the best!

  • Access Windows Home Server from an Ubuntu Computer on your Network

    - by Mysticgeek
If you’re a Windows Home Server user, there may be times when you need to access it from an Ubuntu machine on your network. Today we take a look at the process of accessing files on your home server from Ubuntu. Note: In this example we’re using Windows Home Server with PowerPack 3, and Ubuntu 10.04 running on a home network. Access WHS from Ubuntu To access files on your home server from Ubuntu, click on Places then select Network. You should now see your home server listed in the Network folder as well as other Windows machines…double-click the server to access it. If you don’t see your server listed, you might need to go into Windows Network \ Workgroup and find it there. You’ll be prompted to enter in the correct credentials for WHS just as you would when accessing it from a Windows machine. It’s your choice if you want to have the password remembered or not…make your selection and click Connect. Now you will see the available folders on your home server. In this example we signed in with Administrator credentials, so we have access to everything. Double-click on the folder share you want to access content from…here we see MS Office documents on the server. Or, here we take a look at a music folder with various MP3 files which you can make Ubuntu play. You can access the files directly from the server, provided there is a Linux app that can handle the file type. In this example we opened a Word document in OpenOffice. Here we’re playing an MKV movie file from the server in Totem Movie Player.   You can easily search for files on the server as well… If you want to store your Ubuntu files on WHS it’s just a matter of dragging them to the correct WHS folder you want them in. If you’re using an Ubuntu computer on your home network and need to access files from Windows Home Server, luckily it’s a straight-forward process. You’ll often have to find the correct software to use Windows files, but even that’s getting much easier with version 10.04. • Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge Winners

Maybe you recall that Noel (@noelportugal) and I were running a modified hackathon during the show, the Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge. Without further ado, congratulations to Dimitri Gielis (@dgielis) and Martin Giffy D’Souza (@martindsouza) on their winning entry, an integration between Oracle APEX and Oracle Social Network that integrates feedback and bug submission with Oracle Social Network Conversations, allowing developers, end-users and project leaders to view and discuss the feedback on their APEX applications from within Oracle Social Network. Update: Bob Rhubart of OTN (@brhubart) interviewed Dimitri and Martin right after their big win. Money quote from Dimitri when asked what he’d buy with the $500 in Amazon gift cards, “Oracle Social Network.” Nice one. In their own words: In the developers perspective it’s important to get feedback soon, so after a first iteration and end-users start to test, they can give feedback of the application. Previously it stopped there, and it was up to the developer to communicate further with email, phone etc. With OSN every feedback and communication gets logged and other people can see the discussion immediately as well. For the end users perspective he can now communicate in a more efficient way to not only the developers, but also between themselves. Maybe many end-users (in different locations) would like to change some behaviour, by using OSN they can see the entry somebody put in with a screenshot and they can just start to chat about it. Some key technical end users can have lighten the tasks of the development team by looking at the feedback first and start to communicate with their peers. For the project manager he has now the ability to really see what communication has taken place in certain areas and can make decisions on that. Later, if things come up again, he can always go back in OSN and see what was said at that moment in time. Integrating OSN in the APEX applications enhances the user experience, makes the lives of the developers easier and gives a better overview to project managers. Incidentally, you may already know Dimitri and Martin, since both are Oracle Ace Directors. I ran into Martin at the Ace Director briefings Friday before the conference started, and at that point, he wasn’t sure he’d have time to enter the Challenge. After some coaxing, he and Dimitri agreed to give it a go and banged out their entry on Tuesday night, or more accurately, very early Wednesday morning, the day of the Challenge judging. I think they said it took them about four hours of hardcore coding to get it done, very much like a traditional hackathon, which is essentially a code sprint from idea to finished product. Here are some screenshots of the workflow they built. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } I love this idea, i.e. closing the loop between web developers and users, a very common pain point, and so did our judges. Speaking of, special thanks to our panel of three judges: Reggie Bradford (@reggiebradford), serial entrepreneur, founder of Vitrue and SVP of Cloud Product Development at Oracle Robert Hipps (@roberthipps), VP of Development for Oracle Social Network and my former boss Roland Smart (@rsmartx), VP of Social Marketing and the brains behind the Oracle Social Developer Community Finally, thanks to everyone who made this possible, including: The three other teams from HarQen (@harqen), TEAM Informatics (@teaminformatics) and Fishbowl Solutions (@fishbowle20) featuring Friend of the ‘Lab John Sim (@jrsim_uix), who finished and presented entries. I’ll be posting the details of their work this week. The one guy who finished an entry, but couldn’t make the judging, Bex Huff (@bex). Bex rallied from a hospitalization due to an allergic reaction during the show; he’s fine, don’t worry. I’ll post details of his work next week, too. The 40-plus people who registered to compete in the Challenge. Noel for all his hard work, sample code, and flying monkey target, more on that to come. The Oracle Social Network development team for supporting this event. Everyone in legal and the beta program office for their help. And finally, the Oracle Technology Network (@oracletechnet) for hosting the event and providing countless hours of operational and moral support. Sorry if I’ve missed some people, since this was a huge team effort. This event was a big success, and we plan to do similar events in the future. Stay tuned to this channel for more.

  • Tip 13 : Kill a process using C#, from local to remote

    - by StanleyGu
    1. My first choice is always to try System.Diagnostics to kill a process 2. The first choice works very well in killing local processes. I thought the first choice should work for killing remote process too because process.kill() method is overloaded with second argument of machine name. I pass process name plus remote machine name and call the process.kill() method 3. Unfortunately, it gives me error message of "Feature is not supported for remote machines.". Apparently, you can query but not kill a remote process using Process class in System.Diagnostics. The MSDN library document explicitly states that about Process class: Provides access to local and remote processes and enables you to start and stop local system processes. 4. I try my second choice: using System.Management to kill a process running on a remote machine. Make sure add references to System.Management.dll and System.Management.Instrumentation.dll 5. The second choice works very well in killing a remote process. Just need to make sure the account running your program must be configured to have permission to kill a process running on the remote machine.

  • rake aborted! undefined local variable or method

    - by Subhransu
    In a fresh new Ubuntu machine, I have installed ruby with sudo apt-get install ruby1.8 and then installed rubygem1.8 with : sudo apt-get install rubygems and after that installed rails3.2.8 with : gem install rails The procedure was very simple. But here comes the problem. When I tried checking the version of rake with rake --trace -version I got the following error: rake aborted! undefined local variable or method `rsion' for #<Rake::Application:0xb72c731c> /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:316:in `standard_rake_options' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1298:in `eval' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:316:in `standard_rake_options' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1298:in `call' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1298:in `parse_in_order' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1254:in `catch' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1254:in `parse_in_order' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1248:in `order!' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1339:in `permute!' /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/optparse.rb:1360:in `parse!' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:425:in `handle_options' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:74:in `init' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:133:in `standard_exception_handling' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:72:in `init' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:64:in `run' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:133:in `standard_exception_handling' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/lib/rake/application.rb:63:in `run' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.9.2.2/bin/rake:33 /usr/local/bin/rake:19:in `load' /usr/local/bin/rake:19 Is it the problem due to I have installed straight from ubuntu apt-get package manager ?

  • Share files - Ubuntu 12.4 and Windows 7 - one network - password not accepted

    - by gotqn
I ask this question in SuperUser but no one helps me. I hope to get more attention here. I have three computers connected in one network by modem. I want to share files in this network in the most easy way (I have read about solutions using Samba). So, I have three machines: One with Windows 7 One with Windows XP One with Ubuntu 12.04 and I have the following situation: The windows PCs can share files between each other. The windows PCs can see that Ubuntu's one is in the network The PC with Ubuntu can see only the PC with Windows 7, but when I click on a folder it ask to enter the network password and it is not accepting it (I am 100% sure it's the correct one) Is there to fix this situation a little bit - at least to enable the file sharing between the Ubuntu and Windows 7 PCs or I should choose a different approach (please advice).

  • Wireless Network Found, can't connect, repeated requests for authentication

    - by Herm Holland
After trawling through the internet, on forums, support websites, and through dozens upon dozens of answered questions on this site, I've not found a solution to what seems like a fairly regular problem... I cannot connect to a wireless network, and am continually asked for the network password. I have tried countless suggested solutions on the different locations I've already referred to. None of them have worked. Details of my experience are as follows: I have just recently installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 (32-bit). Ubuntu installed on my system seemingly fine, and I even formatted my hard drive during the process. It's as if it were a new desktop computer. During the installation I was asked to connect to a Wireless Network. I have a USB Wireless Card connected which I have used to connect desktop PC's, laptops, and a Wii to the internet from approximately the same area of the house (thus the same distance from the Wireless Router). I chose my network, entered the correct password for it (I double checked; it's definitely the right password) and proceeded with the installation. Several times before the installation was complete, I was asked to authenticate the connection, and this seemed to do nothing each time. On the repeated screens the password was already entered in the appropriate box. When Ubuntu booted up the first thing I was faced with (other than something about Language settings, or something) was another request for authentication. Again, the password was already there, so I clicked connect. It did not connect. Instead, I was once again faced with repeated requests every few minutes. I went onto my laptop, which is connected to this network, checked the details of the network, and entered them manually into my Ubuntu PC (including the IPv4 and IPv6 information) but this didn't work either, so I set it back to finding the settings automatically. Note, also, that the "Connect automatically" and "Available to all users" boxes are checked, and have been unchecked & rechecked countless times. I have also tried having my User account connect automatically, and to need a password entered at the welcome screen. Whilst I've been writing this, it has gone through a spat of connecting successfully to the network for less than a minute, before coming offline again, only to repeat the process. But it has now returned to prompting me for a password every couple of minutes. This computer has already run on the Fedora OS, and had no trouble connecting to, and maintaining a connection. I also have a laptop running Windows 7 less than a metre away from this desktop PC, which is connected and has no trouble maintaining a connection at 50%-100% strength (fluctuating). Therefore: - I know it's not the wireless card - I know it's not the PC itself - I know it's not the access point - I know it's not the location of my PC or wireless card - It is solely because of Ubuntu Everything else has worked fine, but the moment Ubuntu was introduced into the equation, it has gone completely wrong. Honestly; I prefer Ubuntu as an OS to Fedora, but if I can't solve the problem it'll be straight back to Fedora that I'll have to go. Can anyone help me at all?

  • How to improve wireless network speed?

    - by Toby
I am running 10.04 LTS on a desktop PC with a Belkin G-Plus MIMO Wireless network card. Ever since running Ubuntu on the machine I have noticed fairly slow network speeds (about half the speed I get when running the same card through Windows) I did some research I found out that by and large wireless network cards aren't that well supported on most Linux distros. I was wondering though if there is anything I could be tweaking on the system that could help squeeze a little more out of the card? Here is some more information *-network:1 description: Wireless interface physical id: 2 logical name: wlan0 serial: 00:1c:df:24:5e:54 capabilities: ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes ip=192.168.1.5 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg

  • Troubleshooting Your Network with Oracle Linux

    - by rickramsey
Are you afraid of network problems? I was. Whenever somebody said "it's probably the network," I went to lunch. And hoped that it was fixed by the time I got back. Turns out it wasn't that hard to do a little basic troubleshooting Tech Article: Troubleshooting Your Network with Oracle Linux by Robert Chase You're no doubt already familiar with ping. Even I knew how to use ping. Turns out there's another command that can show you not just whether a system can respond over the network, but the path the packets to that system take. Our blogging platform won't allow me to write the name down, but I can tell you that if you replace the x in this word with an e, you'll have the right command: tracxroute Once you get used to those, you can venture into the realms of mtr, nmap, and netcap. Robert Chase explains how each one can help you troubleshoot the network, and provides examples for how to use them. • How to prevent wireless network asking password when briefly out of range

    - by Ian Mackinnon
When I'm connected to a wireless network from quite far away I sometimes briefly lose the connection. Then Network Manager prompts me to re-confirm the password as if it suspected that was the problem that caused the loss of connection (the password is already filled in in the dialog box). Is this normal behaviour? Can I prevent it from happening and have Network Manager automatically reconnect without the password dialog box when the wireless network comes back into range? I'm using 10.04 (32bit, Gnome) on an Acer Aspire one.

  • My computer stops seeing the other computers on my network

    - by dan
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. Sometimes my computer stops seeing the names of the other computers on my network. So I can no longer log into another computer by typing the hosting name e.g. ssh me@secondcomputer.local I can still log in using the local network IP address. How can I get the first way to work again without rebooting? I know this problem is local to the computer. The other computers on my network can still see one another. But they can no longer see the computer I'm working on, not even by local ip address.

  • Kubuntu 12.04 - DNS Issues

    - by AndrewJesaitis
Starting yesterday (6/11/12), I've been having many network problems. When requesting a page in chrome, the page hangs on "Sending request" and then will eventually timeout. I'm within a VPN that has it's own DNS server. I've tried to manually set my DNS through the Network-Manager applet and by editing /etc/network/interfaces. Having no luck I unlinked the resolv.conf file and dumped the contents of my old resolv.conf into it. Again having no luck, I deactivated the dnsmasq server in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf by commenting out the dns=dnsmasq. $ cat NetworkManager.conf [main] plugins=ifupdown, keyfile #dns=dnsmasq no-auto-default=D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B, [ifupdown] managed=false $ nm-tool NetworkManager Tool State: connected (global) - Device: eth0 [Wired connection 1] ------------------------------------------- Type: Wired Driver: tg3 State: connected Default: yes HW Address: D0:67:E5:EA:B6:6B Capabilities: Carrier Detect: yes Speed: 1000 Mb/s Wired Properties Carrier: on IPv4 Settings: Address: 192.168.254.122 Prefix: 24 (255.255.255.0) Gateway: 192.168.254.2 DNS: 192.168.254.1 What is strange is that the network will work fine for a few minutes then start to timeout. A few minutes later it will work again. I'm unable to hit internal or external sites when it is timing out. When I $dig local sites, I receive no answer. I do receive an answer from google.com. At this point, I would usually blame the DNS Server, especially since when I change to Google's DNS server things work. But, I need to use our internal DNS to hit our internal sites. Nobody else is having issues and they are all using DHCP. This group includes one user who is using 11.04. At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do, so any help would be appreciated.

  • Hybrid wireless network repeating

    - by Oli
Summary: I'd like to use two Ubuntu computers to extend/compliment an existing wireless access point. I have a network which currently looks a bit like this: What the diagram doesn't show is the interference caused by our house. It's a wifi-blocking robot sent here from the past. The two wired computers are in areas where the signal is most blocked (not by design, just a happy co-incidence). Both wired computers have fairly good network cards. They're both Ubuntu machines and I would like to turn them into additional base stations. I know I could throw more networking hardware at this (network extenders or cable in additional, pure wireless access points) but I've got two Linux machines sitting in ideal places and I feel like they should be able to help me out. I've tried ad-hoc networks but I need something that is a lot more transparent (eg you can migrate from base to base without a connection dropping); it should look like one network to clients.
