• Squid closing the connection on long HTTP GET requests

  Hello, When running a database query on a specific external site we use, Squid seems to cut off the connection after a consistent period of time (just over a minute). The query is submitted through a standard web form is that uses GET to query their database. Firefox 3 just displays a blank page. Internet Explorer throws a 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' error (tested in v6 and v8). When we perform the same query on the same machine, but bypass the Squid proxy, it works fine. The query takes about two and a half minutes to complete. There are a few timeout settings in Squid, but I honestly don't know what one to be looking at. Any possible solutions would be much appreciated. Cheers

• It takes a long time until Windows XP recognize I connected USB drive

  I have a problem with my new USB disk. When I connect it to my laptop with Windows XP SP2 it takes about 4-5min until Windows recognizes it and shows it as a new disk. I can also see (disk's LED is blinking) that something is scanning the disk when I connect it; when this is done Windows immediately recognize it. Also when I'm copying data to this disk the speed is about 3.5MB/sec. It's connected using USB2.0. I tried to check for spyware (using Spybot), also tried running Windows in safe mode. But still have the same problems. Do you have any idea what could help to solve this problem? On Windows Vista (another laptop) everything is ok, disk loads in about 15sec and speed is about 20-30MB/sec. Edit: I tried to update to SP3 - no change Edit2: When this "strange" scanning occurs I can see that DPCs process is taking about 50% of CPU. When the scan ends (after 5min) this process take 0% again. Edit3: About the scan time, currently it's taking about 5min, but this time is growing as I'm adding more data to the disk, currently its about 40GB and I don't want to see how long it will take with 1000GB. • Snow Leopard takes a long time to connect to Windows/Samba server

  We run a very heterogeneous network here: There is some XP, Vista, 7, Leopard, Snow Leopard clients, and Windows 2003 (one remaining legacy app), 2008, and Linux servers. The main file server runs Ubuntu Linux and has been added to the Windows Domain and has been used for many years; SBS 2008 is the PDC (the 2003 and 2008 are on the domain also). In Leopard there were no problems at all authenticating to the file servers. We've upgraded one of the Leopard iMacs to Snow Leopard, though the same problem occurs in a new MBP which came with the newer OS as well as a clean install on another iMac. It does not matter whether connected through wired or wireless. In the Finder when clicking on the server - whether on first boot or after it is connected - it will display "Connecting..." for up to a few minutes before either generally working (if username/password in keychain) or displaying "Connection Failed" - at which time clicking "Connect As" and typing in the username/password will take some more time and eventually work. Sometimes it will display "Connecting..." indefinitely. (I've left it as long as 15 minutes before trying something else) Accessing shares on the the 2003 and SBS servers have the problem (so I don't think it's a Samba server issue). The Server 2008 Standard is connecting instantly at the moment. Accessing the share through an alias/stacks doesn't have this problem. Leopard and Windows clients still have no problem. I've searched Google but hasn't yielded any working result. How do I get rid of this delay?

• Very long (>300s) request processing time on Apache Server serving static content from particular IP

  We are running an Apache 2.2 server for a very large web site. Over the past few months we have been having some users reporting slow response times, while others (including our resources, both on the internal network and our home networks) do not see any degradation in performance. After a ton of investigation, we finally found a "Deny from none" statement in our configuration that was causing reverse DNS lookups (which were timing out) that solved the bulk of our issues, but we still have some customers that we are seeing in the Apache logs (using %D in the log format) with request processing times of 300s for images, css, javascript and other static content. We've checked all Deny / Allow statements for reoccurrence of "none", as well as all other things we know of that would cause reverse DNS lookups (such as using "REMOTE_HOST" in rewrite rules, using %a instead of %h in our log format configuration) as well as verified that HostnameLookups is set to "Off". As an aside, we've also validated that reverse DNS lookups for folks having this problem do not time out - so I'm fairly certain DNS is not an issue in this case. I've run out of ideas. Are there any Apache configuration scenarios that someone can point me to that I might be missing that would cause request times for static content to take so long only for certain users? • How to get old DLL's running on 64bit server

  Hello all, I'm moving my company's websites from a windows 2003x86 server to windows 2008x64 which is running IIS 7.5. The problem that I've got is that all the DLL's which were running fine on the old server, now error out whenever they're called. All I get is a generic error like: Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 800401f3' Server.CreateObject Failed /folder/scriptname.asp, line 24 800401f3 The line that errors is: '23 lines of comments set A0SQL_DATA = server.createobject("olddllname.Data") 'the rest of the script I already have that site running in an App Pool that is set to 32bit mode. But, I get the error anyway. Has anyone experienced this? I'm frusterated because all the info I look up says that all I need to do is set the app pool to run in 32bit mode. I did that and It's still not working. What else could I check?

• Windows Server 2008 Scheduled Tasks not running - 0x80041323 - Reduce Number of tasks running in the specified context?

  I am getting the following problem on a number of windows 2008 servers. 0x80041323 Task Scheduler failed to start task \Reporting" in TaskEngine "S-1-5-18:NT AUTHORITY\System:Service:" for user "NT AUTHORITY\System". User Action: Reduce the number of tasks running in the specified user context. I've done lots of research around the web but have been unable to come up with a working answer. I have found some information suggesting increasing a value in the registry key "TasksInMemoryQueue" which I have done, but even setting this as high as 500 has not helped. I have rebooted the server after setting this value. The server does run a high volume of Scheduled tasks, there could be 150 or so running at any one time, but certainly not 500. The scheduled tasks are all running under the system user. Does anyone have any ideas?

• What is a good WordPress theme for long Objective-C code samples [closed]

  As some of you iPhone developers know, Objective-C can be a verbose language. Long, descriptive variable and method names are the norm. I'm not complaining, it makes code easier to read and code completion makes it easy to type. But damn! Check out this method name for getting a cell in a table view: -(UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath; I have a WordPress blog where I publish my code samples as I'm learning the language. One thing I hate on other blogs is how the code won't fit in a column without that scroll bar or without wrapping around. It really made it hard for me to read and comprehend method names back when I was a super-noob (six months ago). Right now I use the clean-looking Fazyvo 1.0 theme by noonnoo. I love the look of it but the columns are just too narrow and it doesn't have support for wider ones. I could hand-modify it but then I'd have to maintain/redo those changes every time I updated it. Instead, I'm looking for a nice theme that has width control built-in and looks good at larger font sizes. Can anyone help? Note: I use WP-CodeBox for code syntax highlighting.

• MySQL taking a long time to start

  I'm running Windows Server 2008 with MySQL installed and every time I reboot the server the MySQL Service doesn't start right away. A look into the Windows Eventlog shows that the MySQL Service was hung at startup. Looking at the Services.msc console shows the service state at Starting... Eventually, like 10 minutes, the MySQL Service actually finishes the startup process and the database becomes available for my Wordpress server... I looked at the MySQL .err files and didn't find anything that would indicate a delay in the statup process... Can anyone suggest a way to determine what is causing the delay, and more importantly, how to prevent the delay in the MySQL Startup?

• "Thunderbird is already running" error every time I try to start Thunderbird, even if it is not running

  I cannot open Thunderbird. The process isn't running, but when I click on the icon, I get the the following error: Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system. I've tried the following: Ending the task in Task Manager Deleting parent.lock Uninstalling Thunderbird Uninstalling Firefox Running Thunderbird in software "safe mode" and Windows safe mode What can I do to fix this problem? The problem looks more serious than expected. I do not see any Mail folder in my profile at C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Mozilla\Thunderbird. I think I lost my email.

• PSKill does not run from VbScript

  We have a site on our local IIS6 Windows 2003 server that occasionally locks up, and we would like a VbScript to kill the process. It is located in the system32 folder. I'm running these tests on the local machine. For simplicity, my VbScript file simply has lines such as these: WScript.Echo "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WshShell.Run "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WScript.Echo "Killed Process" Obtained earlier in the script, W3WP.ProcessId contains the correct process ID. The script outputs to the screen: PSKill.exe 6884 But the line that is supposed to execute the command does nothing. If I type the command in, it works fine. Why does PsKill work fine when I type it, but not from VbScript?

• Nohup & Sass: Process keeps running but, after a while, *.scss files do not get compiled

  I am using Sass on a CentOS 5.8 server and want it to keep running after SSH logout, so that other users can edit *.scss files for days or even weeks to come without any need to start the program each time they login (in fact, they don't even have SSH access). I have used the following command from this question/answer: $ nohup sass --watch path/to/scss/files:path/to/css/output/files & Then, I log out of the SSH session and the process keeps running. It all works fine (logging in again and using touch to create a test file (test.scss) correctly triggers the creation of the corresponding test.css file) for the first few minutes, but after a while the *.scss files stop getting compiled... However, ps aux | grep 'sass' Shows that the process is still running. Anybody knows what am I doing wrong?

• Importing long numerical identifiers into Excel

  I have some data in a database that uses ids that have the form of 16 digit numbers. In some situations i need to export the data in such a way that it can be manipulated in excel. So i export the data into a file and import it into excel. I've tried several file formats and I'm stuck. The problem I'm facing is that when reading a file into excel that has a cell that looks like a number then excel treats it as a number. The catch is that (as far as i can tell) all numerical values in excel are double precision floating point which have a precision of less than 16 digits. So my ids are changed: very often the last digit its changed to a 0. So far I've only been able to convince excel to keep the Id unchanged by breaking it myself: by adding a letter or symbol to the Id. This however means that in order to use the value again it must be "unbroken". Is there a way to create a file where i can specify that excel must treat the value as a text without changing the value? Or its there a way to let excel treat the value as a long (64bit integer)?

• Firefox takes a really long time to load some sites on Ubuntu

  Hello guys, I have an issue here. Some sites - just a few - takes a really long time to load on Firefox. One example is A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com/) which takes more than 30 minutes (yes, minutes, not seconds). On Opera, ou even through a telnet session, the problematic sites run without problem, fast as expected. I am using Linux 8.04, running Firefox 3.6.3 downloaded from mozilla site, with a 10M ADSL connection. I tried many tweaks I found googling, like disable IPv6, and change http pipelining settings on FF's about:config. None worked. I also used Firebug to find what phase during negotiation is the bottleneck. Findings are in the screenshot. Well guys, any idea what is the issue? And how to solve it? I repeat, this only happens with firefox (3.6.3 and prior versions), for a few sites only (even sites with much more requests, images, javascripts, stylesheets work fine), and http pipelines and IPv6 tweaks on about:config didn't work. • IIS Hangs on SQL Connections when running ASP.net applications

  We have a database server running SQL 2000 and two web servers hosting ASP.net applications. All three servers are running Windows Server 2003 SP2. Our issue is repeatable after about 2 weeks, IIS on one web server is no longer able to establish SQL connections. Static content loads fine. Other non-IIS applications are still able to contact the SQL database server. ODBC functionality also still works. While running SQL profiler a connection is never established from IIS when it is in this state. The only way to fix this situation is to restart the web server. There are no firewalls installed on any machines.

  When I set up a tunnel using dynamic forwarding (ssh -D), which side is running the SOCKS proxy? That is, is the proxy running on the local end (client) or the remote end (server)? Here's the situation: I want to set up several tunnels chained together using -L. Should the -D tunnel be the last one in the chain or the first one? Edit: I found the answer to the second paragraph on Super User (the -D tunnel should be at the remotest end). But I'd still like to know where the proxy code is running.

  Am pretty new to server administration. So I am not able to get to the root of the problem. I am running Apache2 with mod_php on a 1GB Rackspace Cloud Server (Ubuntu 9.10). My site goes down often, and I have to restart apache2 to get the site working. I checked the "error.log" file. There were no signs of any error messages. I even searched for words like [error] / error / warn / [warn] . But no results. The site goes down and even then apache is running. When the site was down, the checked the status /etc/init.d/apache2 status and it gave ** * Apache is running (pid 433). ** Any suggestions where I should look for the problem. Thanks a lot.

The problem is that the application works fine on windows7 and when run on WINXp, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when i copy the application to desktop and run , it runs with no glitch I was facing the same problem on WIN7 too , but it was running as required when i ran it using "Run in Xp mode" and then i applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. the application is built using VC++ 2008 , What might be the problem.

• Centos + CPanel results in php always running as fgci, instead of cli, as expected

  I'm having problems with a server configured by someone else. It uses CPanel, and it has Apache+PHP. For some reason, when running php -v as a user, i get "cli" as handler # php -v | head -n 1 PHP 5.3.27 (cli) (built: Oct 15 2013 16:06:48) If a make a PHP script with echo shell_exec("php -v | tail -n 1"), i get PHP 5.3.27 (cgi-fcgi) (built: Oct 15 2013 16:22:16) Why the cli/fcgi difference? I need to fix this so that scripts ran by the apache user would be running as "cli", not "fcgi". • vps running out of memory, 200MB free

  At the beginning of this year I took a VPS for my website because I was running against the resource limits from a shared hosting. Here are the things I know: 2GB memory, with 1GB swap Debian X64 server ED installed Software running on the webserver: mysql apache postfix pop3 imap amavisd clamd cron fail2ban munin-node pure-ftpd spamd nginx Now for the setup: Nginx listens on port 80 and handles the static files, the php side is done by apache2 running mod_php in combi with apc(no var caching!). Iam using a pretty 'busy' drupal and phpbb stack on the server, for drupal iam using boost and authcache to handle of the server load with a pressflow stack. phpbb is just phpbb3 with some mods installed, but has at max 30 users online at a time.. The problem is that its staring to use the swap after a few days after a reboot and thus the site becomes slower. I'v added pictures of monit and munin, so maybe somebody can help me out... • Why would anacron not be running?

  I have a Ubuntu system that has anacron installed. However I'm pretty sure it's not running. It's not running the commands in /etc/cron.daily to rotate the syslog files (I'm using sysklog, which has its own rotating log method, not using logrotate). The last time the logs were rotated were in October 2009. /var/spool/anacron/cron.daily exists and the contents are 20091015. AFAIR we had a power outage then, and everything rebooted. How can I debug anacron? How can I see why it's not running? My first instinct is to look for /var/log/anacron, but that's not there. How can I fix it to make it run again?

• JRE not running correctly on Windows 7 64Bit

  An application called DBGL (DosBox Game Launcher) requires JRE in order to run successfully. I had it installed and running on my old Windows 7 32Bit machine without any problems. Today I got my new PC with Windows 64Bit and I cannot get it running anymore. If I install the latest JRE 32Bit version to the \Program Files (x86) folder DBGL says it needs the latest JRE version in order to run and doesn't start. If I install the latest JRE 64Bit version to the \Program Files folder I do not get an error message anymore but the application doesn't start either. Clicking it has literally no effect. Right now I have both JRE versions running parallely and I get the same result I have when only the 64Bit version is installed. Thanks in advance!
