• Visio 2010 Reverse Engineer Oracle

  I have used Visio 2007 in the past to reverse engineer Oracle databases to get a flow scheme. I believe all Office 2007 products were x86 as well which is where I suspect my issue currently lies. I have since upgraded to Visio 2010 x64 and when I go to reverse engineer something from Oracle it shows up under Installed Visio Drivers but I can't seem to create a data source using it. My assumption here is it is because Oracle doesn't play nicely with x64 and with Visio being compiled as x64 I don't even get the option to use it. Has anyone done this with Visio 2010 x64 and Oracle yet? Or are there other tools you would recommend to reverse engineer and get a model such as the one generated by Visio?

• PHP SoapClient: Problems with Distributed WSDL File

  Hello, I have a problem using a distributed WSDL File ( scheme / other definitions are declared outside the actual wsdl) with php's SoapClient. This is the Fault Message I get: SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: 'getSomeInfo' already defined. After some googling , it seems to be a bug inside php as someone else discovered exactly the same problem: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=45282 Has there been any bug fix(es)? Any solution to work around this bug? PS: I think posting a code snippet is senseless, since the invocation of the SoapClient ctor using just the WSDL is the only that fails. • Polymorphism in SQL database tables?

  I currently have multiple tables in my database which consist of the same 'basic fields' like: name character varying(100), description text, url character varying(255) But I have multiple specializations of that basic table, which is for example that tv_series has the fields season, episode, airing, while the movies table has release_date, budget etc. Now at first this is not a problem, but I want to create a second table, called linkgroups with a Foreign Key to these specialized tables. That means I would somehow have to normalize it within itself. One way of solving this I have heard of is to normalize it with a key-value-pair-table, but I do not like that idea since it is kind of a 'database-within-a-database' scheme, I do not have a way to require certain keys/fields nor require a special type, and it would be a huge pain to fetch and order the data later. So I am looking for a way now to 'share' a Primary Key between multiple tables or even better: a way to normalize it by having a general table and multiple specialized tables.

• SQLServer Replication, dealing with updating data in a subscriber without merging with the publisher

  To simplify my problem, picture two databases, one is a publisher, one is a replicated subscriber. Most of the time, changes are configured in the publisher, and pushed to the subscriber once per day using transactional replication. (The subscriber is the main production database). However, on a rare occasion, we need to make a change directly to the subscriber database. This does not break replication, however to ensure consistency, we also want to replicate this single change back to the publisher database. My first thought was to make both databases publishers to each other, but that does not work. Merge replication also does not work as that merges the data together, and we really only want to push that single change from the subscriber back to the publisher. Is there some other replication scheme I can use here, or do I need to invent my own thing?

  I'm attempting to get Rails to play nice with the Digg API's OAuth. I'm using the oauth gem (ruby one, not the rails one). However, Digg spits a "400 Bad Request" error back at me when @consumer.get_request_token is called. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?

• Creating and debugging a Sharepoint Services 3.0 WebPart

  I am trying to create a WebPart for my locally installed Sharepoint Services 3.0 and I've followed various tips and guides to get it all working. However somewhere on the road I must have missed something or this is just not "in all the books". When creating an empty Sharepoint WebPart and just hitting F5 to debug it, I get the following message: Error 1 The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'. 0 0 And as this article from microsoft suggests I did enable Negotiate, NTLM. But it's still not working, Any suggestions?

• How does the Licenses.licx based .Net component licensing model work?

  I've encountered multiple third part .Net component-vendors use a licensing scheme. On an evaluation copy, the components show up with a nag-screen or watermark or some such indicator. On a licensed machine, a Licenses.licx is created - with what appears to be just the assembly full name/identifiers. This file has to be included when the client assembly is built. How does this model work? Both from component-vendors' and users' perspective. What is the .licx file used for? Should it be checked in? We've had a number of issues with the wrong/right .licx file being checked in and what not

• Unable to find sphinx.yml file

  I am running rails 2.2.3 with mysql as database scheme & thinking sphinx installed as plugin. I am having two problems : 1) I am unable to find file confing/sphinx.yml. I just have a config/development.sphinx.conf 2) I have specified min_infix_len & enable_start property from define_index method of model. I also have checked development.sphinx.conf file & these properties are correctly set there. But I am not getting any infix search results. Please help.

• TomTom integration does not work anymore?

  I did for 6 months back an integration for TomTom navigation with URL Scheme. This worked out great, but then TomTom updated their iPhone app to version 1.10. Since then the integration does not work. Anyone tried the same? • Remove the white text shadow from disabled links in IE8

  We are using Ext JS for an application in work, building a custom theme for it. We currently have a dark colour scheme including menus with dark backgrounds. In some of the menus some of the links are disabled at certain points, which all perfectly. However IE8 seems to add a sort of white text shadow, which I am sure is normally fine but as the text is light grey and the background is dark grey the white text shadow makes it look blurry and even makes the other enabled links more disabled as they look darker. Does anyone know of a way to remove the text shadow (I realise it is not css text-shadow as IE does not support it).

Best practice #1: A short time delay that increases with the number of failed attempts, like: 1 failed attempt = no delay 2 failed attempts = 2 sec delay 3 failed attempts = 4 sec delay 4 failed attempts = 8 sec delay 5 failed attempts = 16 sec delay etc. DoS attacking this scheme would be very impractical, but on the other hand, potentially devastating, since the delay increases exponentially. I am curious how I could implement something like this for my login system in PHP?

I got these metrics from a paper "Keystroke-based User Identification on Smart Phones" by Saira Zahid1, Muhammad Shahzad1, Syed Ali Khayam1,2, Muddassar Farooq1. I was planning to get the datasets to test my algorithm from openmoko phone, but the phone is mis-behaving and I am finding trouble in generating these time data-sets. • UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

  I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them. For browser applications, this happens automatically by the browser, for non browser applications, it is pretty trivial to save the cookie and send it with each request. However, I have not figured out a good approach for doing the initial handshake from browser applications. For example, if this is all happening using a AJAX technique, what prevents the user from being able to access the ID/Pass the client is using to handshake with the service? It seem's like this is the only stumbling block to this approach and I'm stumped.

• What emoticons can you put into class names in your language?

  I've just had a "discussion" with a developer about naming classes in C#. My final throw away line was, "Let's not put any emoticons in our class names." I can't think of a way you could put emoticons in C# class names, but I haven't thought too hard about it. Is this possible? Does any programming language allow it? What would be the best/worst language to be able to perform this in? Update: The Scheme answer bests answers my question. It was a quick idea after a quick discussion so I'm going to accept after a short amount of time and then move on with my life. Thanks for the responses.

• Math for a geodesic sphere

  I'm trying to create a very specific geodesic tessellation, but I can't find anything online about it. It is normal to subdivide the triangles of an icosahedron into triangle patches and project them onto the sphere. However, I noticed an animated GIF on the Wikipedia entry for Geodesic Domes that appears not to follow this scheme. Geodesic spheres generally comprise a mixture of mostly hexagonal triangle patches, with pentagonal patches forming at the vertices of the original icosahedron; in most cases, these pentagons are linked together; that is, following a straight edge from the center of one pentagon leads to the center of another pentagon. In the Wikipedia animation, however, the edge from the center of one pentagon doesn't appear to intersect the center of an adjacent pentagons; instead it intersects the side of the other pentagon. Hopefully the drawing below makes this clear: Where can I go to learn about the math behind this particular geometry? Ideally, I'd like to know of an algorithm for generating such tessellations.

• Programmatically get screenshot of page

  I'm writing a specialized crawler and parser for internal use and I require the ability to take a screenshot of a web page in order to check what colours are being used throughout. The program will take in around ten web addresses and will save them as a bitmap image, from there I plan to use LockBits in order to create a list of the five most used colours within the image. To my knowledge it's the easiest way to get the colours used within a web page but if there is an easier way to do it please chime in with your suggestions. Anyway, I was going to use this program until I saw the price tag. I'm also fairly new to C#, having only used it for a few months. Can anyone provide me with a solution to my problem of taking a screenshot of a web page in order to extract the colour scheme?

• Can you use the PackageMaker command to create an installer from a list of files?

  I want to (periodically and automatically) create an installer from various files and folders that are in many places. But, I can't figure out how to supply the packagemaker command with all the paths of the items I want to install. This is for internal development purposes, not for customer distribution. I want the files included to be configureable; it's not really an option to use the GUI to add all the paths because they will change frequently. The best I could do was to use the --watch flag and touch all of the stuff I wanted included in the package. This is very messy and includes other files that happen to be accessed at the same time. There isn't a common scheme to what I want to include, so I can't just --filter the rest out. Is there a better way? Am I missing the point?

  I noticed, that sometimes (especially where mod_rewrite is not available) this path scheme is used: http://host/path/index.php/clean_url_here --------------------------^ This seems to work, at least in Apache, where index.php is called, and one can query the /clean_url_here part via $_SERVER['PATH_INFO']. PHP even kind of advertises this feature. Also, e.g., the CodeIgniter framework uses this technique as default for their URLs. The question: How reliable is the technique? Are there situations, where Apache doesn't call index.php but tries to resolve the path? What about lighttpd, nginx, IIS, AOLServer? A ServerFault question? I think it's got more to do with using this feature inside PHP code. Therefore I ask here.

• What programs should I write to truly experience this fancy new language ?

  Tried Scheme at one point, just built up half of a "math" and "string" library before getting bored... Similar experience with Java, but stopped early because I was appalled at the lack of operator overloading. When you try out a new language, is there a program/game/function/exercise/problem that you use to get into the hot meaty center and really EXPERIENCE the language? I've been wanted to try Python, Ruby, some lisps, etc but can't seem to find any meaningful work to do with them, or any reason to use them for anything over languages I already know. • How to change out-of-focus text selection color in Xcode?

  Okay, I'll bite. I've got really pleasant code/window colors set up in Xcode. Ordinarily, my selection color is very visible. When I am doing a project search and iterating through the results, however, the results list stays in focus and the found text remains out of focus, using a different background color. This color is extremely hard to detect, especially when the text is embedded in a larger code block and the view is shifting around as it scrolls to the results. Here's an example: Left side is in focus (just normal selection), right side is out of focus (during project find) Often it takes a few seconds to find where the heck the selected text is. Unless I'm just missing it, Xcode seems to offer no way to change this particular selection color. Interestingly, it also doesn't seem to follow the selection color from the Appearance panel. Does anyone know a way to change this color or force it to be more visible, short of changing my entire color scheme around?
