    I've just migrated the AD with the whole nine yards, FSMO, PDC, RID, Schema, etc, from an SBS 2003 to a Win 2008 R2 Std. I have managed to have no error in the dcdiag before I demoted the SBS 2003 from the AD, fsmocheck, conectivity, advertising, dns, etc. The SBS 2003 demoted successfully. After this step I have restarted both, the old SBS and the new Win 2008 r2. After restart the new DC (which is the GC) started with an Access denied to the DNS Server MMC, actually it is looking like I would try to connect to the 2008 r2 DNS server from an older server console I can NOT manage DNS server through MMC nor through dnscmd (Command failed: ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED 5 0x5) I cannot even use the Action Option from the DNS Server MMC because all the options are DISABLED but for "Launch nslookup". I've made a lot of research on the internet but no luck, yet. So I come to ask for help. Thank you very much.

    I need a way to attach a VHD at boot in Windows Server 2008 R2. I tried to accomplish this task by creating a diskpart script that attached the vdisk at boot, which would work if it were not for the fact that it triggers UAC when I call on diskpart to mount the image. What is the point of auto mounting a VHD at boot if I have to click Yes to accept the UAC? Is there some other way of mounting VHD images at boot in Windows Server 2008 R2?

  • How can I determine what is causing SQL Server 2008 Express to hang Windows 7?

    I have SQL Server Express 2008 installed on a Windows 7 (32-bit) developer workstation. Whenever I run an application that accesses SQL Server the Windows 7 shell hangs when the application closes. Applications like Windows Explorer and Task Manager become completely unresponsive. The task bar will not allow any interaction. The only way to recover the system is to power cycle. Two of the applications in use when this happens are NUnit and SQL Server Management Studio. NUnit always runs the unit tests that interact with the database fine. SQL Server Management Studio will sometimes cause the problem while trying to explore the database. The Windows event log does not show any events that are obviously connected to the problem. I have reverted and reinstalled SQL Server Express 2008 several times. What can be done to identify what is causing SQL Server Express 2008 to hang the Windows 7 shell?

    We are experiencing a performance problem using Windows 2008 CIFS client. We have a FreeNAS server that delivers 1.3GB/s on ZFS write. We have 10Gb network connecting NAS server and CIFS clients. Using two Linux CIFS clients, we can get around 1.2GB/s. But windows 2008 clients can only give us 400MB/s. Is that the best a Windows 2008 client can deliver or we do have a poorly configured Windows client? Much appreciated.

I have the set of files in the Web References folder under my project. There's a .wsdl, .disco and several .datasource files. Is there any way to re-add this web reference through the existing files rather than using the "Add Web Reference" dialog?

  • Disabling DNS Registration on Server 2008 R2

    I want to tell a server 2008 R2 machine to NOT register it's IP addresses in DNS. I go into the Advanced tab on IPv4 and turn off "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" simple! But... the addresses are updated in DNS anyway! And actually the A record is eventually removed from the DNS server. I've confirmed that the checkbox is off by looking at it myself, and by checking the RegistrationEnabled registry value for that adapter. Both confirm that the registration is off. I've turned of DNS debug logging on the DNS server and I can see DNS Update requests coming from the server in question! This should not happen. What's even odder is that eventually (several hours) the A record for the server (which I added by hand!) is removed from the DNS server. I've also confirmed that scavaging is off on both DNS servers in the domain. Ideas? Edits: Per the comment: The server has static IP addresses. However, it's got two of them on one adapter. Since I'm in a VM (HyperV) environment I just spun up a second adapter and moved the second IP to the second adapter. I set the first adapter to auto-register (since that's the IP I want anyway) and the second adapter to NOT auto-register. We'll see if this is any better. Not any better. On a reboot of the server the registration was removed from DNS. Seems both cards are still contacting the server. Based on the DNS log the card that shouldn't register in DNS is registering a 'delete' request. And then the card that should register is registering an add request but that's ignored. I'm totally confused at this point.

  • How do i play nicely with MS SQL/SQL Server 2008

    Big problem. I have nearly given up. I am trying to port my prototype to use MS SQL so it will work on a server once i get it (the server will be SQL Server 2008, shared, i dont know any more info). So i tried to connect to SQL Server via visual studios IDE and had no luck. I enabled TCP and named pipes and restarted the service (and computer) with still no luck. I remembered about mdf files so i made that after an obstacle of not being able to make the connect string require i figure out visual studio has it in its properties and successfully connected with that. Then i had a problem with nested transactions. After not being able to figure out how to check i wondered if i can configure it to allow it somehow. I always thought all of MS were the same except for limitations but sql server seems to support nested transactions so theres no point trying to work around the problem with .mdf files since i wont need them and really just used it to port the base of my sql code and to check if syntax is correct. I tried installing SQL Server Management Studio since people mentioned it several times (as a solution or at least help). When installing it on windows 7 it says it may not be compatible. After running it, it launched SQL Server Installation Center (64-bit) which doesnt seem to be the same thing as i dont see a way to modify any of my server (networking) configurations or edit user permissions, etc. I am clueless what to do next. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm posting here bc i think my problem is more configurations and sql server then programming.

  • Script to mirror MS SQL Server databases between 2 servers

    Hi I have about 200 sites each of which have 2 servers running MSSQL (2k5 at some sites, 2k8 at others) One server is production and the other is primarily there as a backup. We're rebuilding all of these servers this year and as part of that we will have to set up mirroring for ... a lot ... of databases. Some of these sites have 45 databases so mirroring them manually is going to be a huge pain. I was going to write a batch script which uses SQLCMD to backup the database and log, copies to the secondary server, restores the backup and log with norecovery, creates the endpoints and sets the partner. This in itself isn't too complicated, but i'd love to see what other people have done as i'm not very confident in catching errors using the process i've outlined above. I've seen Tools to manage sql 2008 database mirroring? Which looks really good, but the formatting is jumbled and I can't get it to work. If anyone has any other scripts they've written and are willing to share I'd be eternally grateful. Ideally I'd love to be able to use a script to ensure there are matching endpoints (same ports) on both servers, backup the database, backup the log, copy the backups to second server, restore database and log with norecovery, set the partners on both servers, and somehow confirm that the databases are linked and synchronized. VisualSVN uses port 80 and can only be access from inside the network (i do i by going to the dns name of the server). However, ever since i have installed this, other computers on the network can no longer access the shared folders on the server EXCEPT the domain controller which has no problems accessing the shares. I am stumped, i am guessing it is something to do with Apache running and not using host-headers (or whatever the Apache equivalent may be) but just being bound to the servers DNS name or IP. Any suggestions?

    Hi, I'm searching for a Windows 2008 server in Europe, preferably in Germany or UK or anything with good routing to Denmark (as its where the primary traffic will be generated from). The server will be used as web server (asp.net mvc, php), mail server and database server. We are running a few sites with around 200 concurrent users, which isn't much, but we intend to expand in the near future and the server should be easy to scale in form of adding more RAM and HDD space - if its possible. I think a virtual server may be the best choice - hyper-v or virtuozzo? - considering cost vs specs - but i'm open to suggestions. The max budget is in the range of $1000-1200/year. You guys have any suggestions? Let me know if you need further info.

In order to access each of these apps (whether be it from the local network or the Internet), I have to enter a different port, e.g., http://server:8085 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8085 for Apache http://server:90 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:90 for FDM http://server:8081 or http://xxxx.dyndns.org:8081 for JDownloader I would like to be able to access them using sub-domains, e.g, http://apache.server or http://apache.xxxx.dyndns.org for Apache, http://fdm.server or http://fdm.xxxx.dyndns.org for FDM, http://jdownloader.server or http://jdownloader.xxxx.dyndns.org for JDownloader First of all, would it be possible like I want it, i.e., both from LAN and Internet, and if yes, how? Even if it's possible only for Internet, I would like to know how to do it, if there's a way.

However, what would be the best (secure) way to create connections/accounts between the VMs, presumabely this shouldn't be done with an admin account but one with lesser priveledges.   • How to install/upgrade to Windows 8.1 RTM without a Microsoft account

    When I installed Windows 8, I deliberately chose not to use a Microsoft account to sign in. I like to keep things separate, and just logon with a tradional local account. Any apps that require me to sign-in with my Live account, will have to prompt me to sign-in. Now, I just updated to 8.1, but towards the end of the setup process, I was asked to sign-in with a Microsoft account or create one. Unlike when installation Windows 8, there didn't seem to be any option to skip that step, or otherwise close the sign-in prompt and continue to my updated Windows installation. At least not that I could find. This is particular annyoing, when setting up computers for friends and family, whom I support. They may not have, or have any interest in getting, a Microsoft account and I'm reluctant to use my own. I realize I can disconnect my Microsoft account after the fact, but is there really no way to install, or upgrade to, Windows 8.1, without being forced to create a Microsoft account? If there is, how does one go a about that?

    Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange << should live inside MWS2008 ? or standalone without OS? install Team foundation server << should live inside MWS2008 ? or standalone without OS? on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler to measure for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ? because of my resource is limited =.@ may i know if it is install in this way,maybe it seem like defeat the way of "VPS"... what will happen ? or any guideline on this issue (fully configuring the window server 2008 R2) ?   • Create mirror software raid with bad blocks hdd. How to check data integrity?

    There is error in System event log like this one: "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block." Because of above I created Raid 1 on this disk and other one. I'm using Windows Server 2008 R2 software RAID volumes. Volume in Disk Manager is marked as "Failed Redundancy" and "At Risk". I could command to "Reactivate Disk" and it's starts to re-sync, but after a while it stops and returns to previous state. It stops re-sync on bad block on old disk and creates same error in System event log. Old disk status is Errors, new disk status is Online. How can I check that there is exact copy of the old disk on new one ? It is server machine so I would prefer to keep it running during this check.

    I have a client which has all his mail on server outside of his company. Right now his exchange server (on SBS 2008 is configured using POP3 connector but problem is mail gets deleted from server when downloaded by connector. Is there a way to make pop3 connector leave emails on server (external one) and download them as well for use within Exchange. Client wants to "feel" exchange before making the move totally so he would like to play with it for longer while without loosing mails he has on his server.

I can get the data files (html, etc) synchronized all fine and well, but I'll be adding new Websites fairly often and I'd like to avoid doing the IIS configuration on multiple servers.
