  It is that time again.  Time to polish up you presentation skills on your favorite language or technology features.  The Chicago Code Camp is accepting proposals for presentations.  Show everyone in the Chicago area what you know and submit your own. I really enjoyed presenting last year and just had to submit a proposal for this year.  This time around my topic is Increasing Collaboration with Windows Phone 7, SharePoint 2010 and Office Open XML.  I had a much longer title but the site forced me to shorten it up.  I guess that is a good way to tell people not to get too wordy. • moore's law and quadratic algorithm

  I was going thru a video (from coursera - by sedgewick) in which he argues that you cannot sustain Moore's law using a quadratic algorithm.He elaborates like this In year 197* you build a computer of power X ,and need to count N objects.This takes M days According to Moore's law,you have a computer of power 2X after 1.5 years.But now you have 2N objects to count. If you use a quadratic algorithm, In year 197*+1.5 ,it takes (4M)/2 = 2M days 4M because the algorithm is quadratic,and division by 2 because of doubling computer power. I find this hard to understand.I tried to work thru this as below To count N objects using comp=X , it takes M days. -> N/X = M After 1.5 yrs ,you need to count 2N objects using comp=2X -> 2N/(2X) -> N/X -> M days where do I go wrong? can someone please help me understand?

  My name is Mohammad Raad and I started in the One Year Training program with Oracle on March 1, 2012. I graduated on September 2011 and started searching for a job. Starting your career, as you all know, is hard because some companies see you as a fresh graduate lacking experience and no one is willing to invest in you. I used to check the recruitment websites daily to see if there were openings to apply to, but unfortunately no one wanted to hire a zero year experience fresh graduate. One day I saw Oracle’s 1 year internship program advertised and that was what I needed. I applied but expected nothing to happen because I was used to applying and getting no replies, but they called and that was the start! I had my first interview over the phone and decided to go to Qatar and to continue to search for a job. Two weeks after arriving at Qatar, Oracle called me for a second interview in Lebanon so I booked a ticket on the same day because my interview was the next day I had my interview and went back to Qatar. On January 2012, I heard from Oracle that I was accepted and they choose me for this program, it was a day I will not forget! Starting on 1st March 2012, I was full of energy, willing to do anything to gain experience and prove that I can do it. What really give me a big push is my colleagues’ motivation and support especially from Youssef Halawi, my mentor and Rami Mattar because they believe in me and track my progress day-by-day. At Oracle, I meet customers, attend meetings, demos and presentations, partners’ events and online trainings. Now I’m focusing on a specific product that I really liked and aim to master by the end of my internship. So dear readers wish me good luck! The book that I use for Java was published in the year 2011. In 2012, Java8 will be released followed by Java9 in the year 2013. The questions are: How do I keep myself updated about developments in Java without having to buy a tome for Java8 and/or Java9 Is a book published in 2008 an outdated book for studying JSP and Servelets? In the thirtieth year of the distributed computing revolution (give or take, depending on how you count it), it’s amazing that we have still not moved the needle on the single biggest component of enterprise IT resource utilization. Oracle is in the IT Operations Management business because when management is engineered together with the technology under management, the resulting efficiency gains can be truly staggering. To put it simply – what if you could turn that 67% of IT resources spent on running the business into 50%? Or 40%? Imagine what you could do with those resources. It’s now not just possible, but happening. This seems like a simple idea, but it is a radical change from “business as usual” in enterprise IT Operations. For the last thirty years, management has been a bolted-on afterthought – we pick and deploy our technology, then figure out how to manage it. This pervasive dysfunction is a broken cycle that guarantees high ongoing operating costs and low agility. If we want to break the cycle, we need to take a more tightly-coupled approach. As a complete applications-to-disk platform provider, Oracle is engineering management together with technology across our stack and hooking that on-premise management up live to My Oracle Support. Let’s examine the results with just one piece of the Oracle stack – the Oracle Database. Oracle began this journey with the Oracle Database 9i many years ago with the introduction of low-impact instrumentation in the database kernel (“tell me what’s wrong”) and through Database 10g, 11g and 11gR2 has successively added integrated advisory (“tell me how to fix what’s wrong”) and lifecycle management and automated self-tuning (“fix it for me, and do it on an ongoing basis for all my assets”). When enterprises take advantage of this tight-coupling, the results are game-changing. • What would you say to a bunch of software engineering students on their first day at college?

  Next Friday I'm giving a short (30 min.) talk to a bunch of software engineering students who will be attending the same university I did. Some context: The place is Montevideo, Uruguay The university is Universidad de la República (public, free university) The Software Engineering programme takes 5 years (if you're very good and don't start working early). Around 800 new students per year, around 80 graduates per year. Conditions are harsh, particularly the first two years. Most of them probably have no idea what software engineering or programming is. My goal would be to somehow give them an idea of the field and hopefully motivate them to endure the hardships ahead to eventually become successful developers. So the question is: what would you tell these people?

  As you may be aware, we have been making a concerted effort to ask successful Java EE/GlassFish adopters to come forward with their stories. A number of such stories were shared at this year's GlassFish Community event at JavaOne. In addition to Adam Bien's testimonial (which we posted earlier), another story that really stands out is the one from Stephan Janssen. Stephan is one of the main organizers of Devoxx and the webmaster of the popular Parleys e-learning platform. • Sample size and statistical significance in Google Analytics

  I have been asked to compile a report into dropout rates during checkout for a global webstore I have used a sample size over one month as my sample because: google analytics slows to a crawl over larger sample sizes and makes much of the analysis agonisingly small I believe it to be statistically significant and a representative sample My client has asked me why I didn't use yearly figures and wants proof that one month of data is 'statistically significant'. Am I right in thinking that I need to compare the standard deviation of my monthly sample to the yearly sample and ensure that the deviation is under a certain %age? Question: how do I prove one month of Google Analytics data is representative to one year worth of data? Stats: 90k unique views/month ~1.1m per year.

• New Procurement Report for Transportation Sourcing

  Welcome to our fourth annual transportation procurement benchmark report. American Shipper, in partnership with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), surveyed roughly 275 transportation buyers and sellers on procurement practices, processes, technologies and results. Some key findings: • Manual, spreadsheet-based procurement processes remain the most prevalent among transportation buyers, with 42 percent of the total • Another 25 percent of respondents use a hybrid platform, which presumably means these buyers are using spreadsheets for at least one mode and/or geography • Only 23 percent of buyers are using a completely systems-based approach of some kind • Shippers were in a holding pattern with regards to investment in procurement systems the past year • Roughly three-quarters of survey respondents report that transportation spend has increased in 2012, although the pace has declined slightly from last year’s increases • Nearly every survey respondent purchases multiple modes of transportation • The number of respondents with plans to address technology to support the procurement process has increased in 2012. About one quarter of respondents who do not have a system report they have a budget for this investment in the next two years.

  So again, the #altnetseattle Conference easily was one of the most useful events of the year for me.  The amount of ideas, thoughts, and conversations that happen in just those two days often outweigh all the presentations I see at other conferences throughout the year.  The reason is simple, they are directed, to the point, and done with the ideal of open spaces.  This makes each session exhaustive on a particular topics.  Throw together some of the smartest people in the field and you have a bang up awesome energy and conversation. I got to talk about cloud computer, a little bit, and REST Architecture as sessions I kicked off myself.  Those were a blast.  I also got to meet a ton of other super talented like minded developers and engineers that are out there kicking the tires of .NET (and other languages/tech stacks like Ruby on Rails). Overall the conference rocked and I will definitely be coming back!  With that, I am headed home to Portland.
