• Remote RAID Control ESXi Dell PowerEdge 2950 OpenManage

  I was wondering how one can add a drive into an existing RAID array while ESXi is still running. I have read that you are able to use Dell OpenManage to do this. I have installed OMSA 7.0 on the VMWare ESXi host (5.0 and fully updated) and I've installed OpenManage Essentials on a Windows Server 2008 R2 guest. The issue that I'm having is that OpenManage is unable to see my RAID controller. I have seen videos and photos as parts of guides on how to do this online, so I would assume that the functionality exists and I just have it set up wrong.

• dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, black screen when loading Windows

  I am proficient with Windows and not so much with Linux. Here is my story: Original system came with Windows 7, got openSUSE installed on the second hard drive, and dual boot for this setup worked fine. Wanted to switch to Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot so I did a Windows system recovery and it appeared to give me back a fresh Windows 7 install. I then go to install Ubuntu 11.04 and the installer informs me I have multiple operating systems already installed. I go to the advanced partitioning option and sure enough Windows 7 is on /sda while openSUSE is still on /sdb. From here I followed this guide (How to dual-boot Linux and Ubuntu with two hard drives) after I had deleted all the openSUSE partitions on /sdb through the Allocate Drive Space tab of the installer. I make the /boot, swap, /, and /home partitions and set the GRUB into the MBR of the second disk (/dev/sdb). Everything installs fine. I reboot, Windows loads automatically, install EasyBCD and add an entry for Ubuntu into the Windows Boot Manager while assigning the type as GRUB2. Reboot the system and it now shows dual booting options for both Windows and Ubuntu. Problem is: while I can use Ubuntu fine when I try to boot into Windows it just gives me a black screen and after a little while the fans start running crazy. If I restart the computer I will sometimes get the message that my system was put into hibernation mode because the temperature got too high (90C) which I presume is in accordance with the fans going crazy. I have linked the output from the Boot Info Script below, any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated! • How can I provide secure web content to mobile devices that can't access an intranet?

  I'm working with a client on development web content for their intranet. We want users to be able to access a version of the content on their mobile devices, but most of them don't have the VPN capability to get on to their intranet. I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this and can recommend a solution. One other thing to consider is that the content is not mission critically secure. If someone outside the company gained access to it, it would not represent a major issue, only a minor annoyance. Thanks for any advice.

• "SC.EXE config" and dollar sign in service name

  Say I want to make Windows Service startup dependent on SQL Server. In my case service name for SQL Server is MSSQL$SQL11 (SQL11 is SQL Server instance name) However, when I issue this command: SC.EXE config MyService depend= MSSQL$SQL11 everything after the dollar sign is ignored. When I go to "Dependencies" tab in "Services" SQL Server is not listed. When I check matching registry key it becomes clear why: it only has MSSQL. At this point I have to edit registry by hand to change MSSQL to MSSQL$SQL11 and then everything works as expected. Putting quotes around MSSQL$SQL11 doesn't help. Is there a way to specify $ in the middle of the SC.EXE argument string?

• Windows 8 recimg createimage fails with 0x80070002, why?

  Running Win8 x64. C is an SSD with lots of free space (200GB). I run: recimg /createimage C:\CustomRefreshImages\Img121105 Output says: Source OS location: C: Recovery image path: C:\CustomRefreshImages\Img121105\CustomRefresh.wim Creating recovery image. Press [ESC] to cancel. Initializing The recovery image cannot be written. Error Code - 0x80070002 The paths specified in the command line are created, and I'm running this in an elevated command prompt, so it's not a permissions issue. I've googled this but could only find worthless results, including a particularly entertaining one where the "solution" included instructions for creating a screenshot (press PrtScreen). Any help would be most appreciated.

• How can I fix apt-get autoremove wanting to uninstall most of my packages?

  I did change my packages in synaptic from manually installed to Automatically (they were not manually installed but automatically). Now they are marked for Autoremove. I tested it with sudo apt-get autoremove and the result is shown below (a reduced version because its almost all packages). I remember last year I had same issue and solved it via Ubuntu forums but the forum is down and I cannot reach the post! • Gparted resize of an extended partition fails with error "can't have overlapping partitions".

  I just decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. However I didn't do this manually but instead used the "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7" option during the installation. Now the partition that Ubuntu runs in has very little space and I am getting warning messages. I'm trying to use gparted 0.12.1-5 (via a live CD) to give Windows less space and give Ubuntu more. I've managed to remove 100GB from the Windows partition so I now have some unallocated space between Windows and Ubuntu. This is what it looks like inside Ubuntu (not using the live CD, since it won't let me mount a USB to save a screenshot): So first I take sda4 (extended?) and resize it to the left so it takes up all the unallocated space. Then I resize sda5 (ext4) as well so it takes up all the new space. However, when I hit apply, it fails on the first action (resizing sd4) with the error message can't have overlapping partitions. Any ideas as to why this happens? I also tried resizing sda4 by just a few MB so that it definitely didn't overlap anything, but I still got the same error message. To clarify, I am using gparted from the LiveCD, I just took the screenshot from Ubuntu. I couldn't attach the details file containing the error information from gparted because I can't mount a USB drive when I'm running from the LiveCD. I'm tried following the guide on the gparted website but it says Invalid argument or something like that. If the gparted details are needed, I may need some hints on how to solve the USB issue as well. :)

• Is there anyway to get msiexec to echo to stdout instead of logging to a file

  As part of a continuous delivery pipeline I'd like to install an msi on a given machine. msiexec plus psexec does this perfectly, but it seems that msiexec can only log to a file and I need it to log to stdout/stderr. Right now, to get the output back into our CI software I'll have to add a second step to echo the contents of the log, which seems a bit pointless. Has anybody faced this issue before (and overcome it?) Thanks in advance for any help here. Mark

  A few minutes ago I signed up at a new webhost. I have yet to move my sites over. Upon initial SSH connection, I checked the load and memory usage, they do seem rather higher than I would like: # uptime 12:06:51 up 71 days, 23:23, 1 user, load average: 9.02, 9.49, 9.45 # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 33014800 31927192 1087608 0 2384812 17729816 -/+ buffers/cache: 11812564 21202236 Swap: 16787916 8584 16779332 Is that a bit to packed? I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not? • Will increasing RAM improve Lightroom 3 large tiff loading times

  Set up: mid 2009 17" unibody MacBook Pro 4GB RAM 2.66 Core 2 Duo Snow Leopard 10.6.6 Lightroom 3 When working with 12 MegaPixel RAW files from a Nikon D700, no problem. Lightroom is fine. Recently I've been scanning film and they result in large tiff files, about 130mb each. The tiff files themselves are good, and I'm happy with my scanning workflow. Working with these files in Lightroom is perfectly fine, except for one step. When I choose one of these photos in the Develop module, Lightroom displays the "Loading" on the image for about a minute or two, which is quite long. Once the image is loaded, then everything is fine again, and applying effects is instant. So my only issue is reducing that "loading" time in the develop module (the library module is fine too). Will increasing my RAM to 8GB help? I'm worried about spending the money and it not making any difference. thanks andy

But I have installed the perl base perl-base-2.12 still it gives me the same error. warning: apache-apxs-2.2.4-1.i386.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 1bbd5459 error: Failed dependencies: perl-base >= 0:5.004 is needed by apache-apxs-2.2.4-1.i386 What is the issue here.. ?

• Can't access Linux machine from the network, network from the machine is fine

  I'm having issues with a machine that stopped replicating with mysql. It's managed by a guy on another continent but recently I've had to get involved. The server is running Ubuntu server 9.10 I can't log in with SSH, there is no response. On the server itself I can ssh to localhost fine. I thought maybe it's the firewall rules. I'm no expert on IP Tables, but I believe that's not the issue as I removed all the rules. But it still won't let me in. Any ideas? it's acting from other machines as though the service isn't listening, but I know that it is. It's like this for all services.

• Tomcat cookies not working via my ProxyPass VirtualHost

  Hi there. I'm having some issues with getting cookies to work when using a ProxyPass to redirect traffic on port 80 to a web-application hosted via Tomcat. My motivation for enabling cookies is to get rid of the "jsessionid=" parameter that is appended to the URLs. I've enabled cookies in my context.xml in META-INF/ for my web application. When I access the webapplication via http://url:8080/webapp it works as expected, the jsessionid parameter is not visible in the URL, instead it's stored in a cookie. When accessing my website via an apache2 virtualhost the cookies doesn't seem to work because now "jsessionid" is being appended to the URLs. How can I solve this issue? • CORAID using only 1 of the 2 available NICs for AoE traffic

  We got 6 CORAID shelves in my workplace. On 2 of them I see AoE traffic on only 1 of the 2 NICs that are attached to the SAN switch. We got jumbo frames enabled on all devices. Both NICs show up when I issue the aoe-interfaces command. This wouldn't bother me too much if the throughput performance observed on the "bad" shelves using bonnie++ wasn't half of the result of the "good" shelves. The "good" shelves are older SR1521 model and they have ReiserFS on their LUNS - not that I think it makes a difference - and the "bad" shelves are newer SR2421 model and have JFS. Any help as to what is going on and how to rectify this would be greatly appreciated. BTW: even the lower performing shelves outperform another iSCSI device we got, but that is another story... • mac osx cannot connect to windows 7 machine

  I have a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard 10.6.6) setup on a network with several Windows 7 machines. When trying to place a large file on a Windows share the connection to the Windows share gets lost and I am unable to reconnect until I reboot the Mac. I know this is on the Windows side because the Mac can connect and transfer files to Server 2008 and XP without issue. Looking in the log file I see this message SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 12 I have tried restarting the com.apple.netauth.sysagent service but that did not resolve the situation. I can do an nslookup to the Windows 7 machine, but trying to ping the machine by hostname always gives a hostname lookup failure (I can ping via IP address). I cannot connect to the machine via IP adress either. Any help would be appreciated.

• GPO Startup script did not execute on some computers

  The GPO Startup scripts works fine on other machine but not for another half of the machine. gpresult show that GPO was there. I ran RSOP and it show that the Startup script was there but it was never executed. There nothing on application error or anything related to the failed execution in the event viewer. I have set to Allow slow network connection too but it did not help for the startup script to execute. Permission read/execute granted to Domain Computers & Authenticated Users Other GPO settings works except Startup Script did not execute. The scripts works fine as other machine which success without any issue except some machine. I need help to sort this out as it troubles me where another half of the machine did not execute the script at all. It was all WIndows 7.

• Frank Buytendijk on Prahalad, Business Best Practices

    In his video on the questionable value of some business best practices, Frank Buytendijk mentions a recent HBR article by business guru C.K. Prahalad. I just learned that Prahalad passed away this past weekend at the age of 68. (Information Week obit) A couple of years ago I had the good fortune to attend Mr. Prahalad’s keynote address at a Gartner event.  He had an audience of software architects absolutely mesmerized as he discussed technology’s role in the changing nature of business competition.  The often dysfunctional relationship between IT and business has and will probably always be hot-button issue. But during Prahalad’s keynote,  there was a palpable sense that the largely technical audience was having some kind of breakthrough, that they had achieved a new level of understanding about the importance of the relationship between the two camps. Fortunately, Prahalad leaves behind a significant body of work that will remain a valuable resource as business and the technology that supports it continues to evolve. • What am I (a beginner) losing, by choosing Cherokee over Apache for serving dynamic content?

  I am a complete beginner and am planning to setup a photo sharing site. This is the setup I am planning, basically for a start - - Cherokee (instead of Apache) for serving dynamic content (python-based application), and Nginx for serving static files. Since, I am a beginner, what have I, to lose? So, can someone, from your experience, please tell me, what I'd lose by choosing Cherokee over Apache for serving dynamic content in PHP/Python/whatever? Anything other than the fact that there's lot of documentation, many people who can help when there's an issue etc as Apache is well established and the most popular web server? Again, my intention is not to spurt a flame war here. Just wanted to know if Cherokee would be better than Apache in terms of performance, reliability, and speed, when it matters (peak load times). Also, I heard it's a lot faster than Apache in serving dynamic content, is it true?

The key trend is that digital is now more than ever poised to take over print: Our digitally distributed products have grown from 18.36% of our publishing mix in 2009 to 28.09% of our mix in 2010. What is more impressive is that our digitally distributed products have produced more than double the revenue that has been lost with the decline of print. I think this is important because some say that digital cannibalizes print products. Our data indicates the contrary, as print is declining much more slowly than digital is growing. I think we may be seeing developers purchasing a print book, and then purchasing the electronic editions to search and copying code from, as the incremental cost for digital is more than reasonable. My own book seems to be leading this trend. Thanks to everyone who purchased it! And the five bestselling O’Reilly ebook products for 2010: 1) Regular Expressions Cookbook, 2) jQuery Cookbook, 3) Learning Python, 4) HTML5: Up and Running, and 5) JavaScript Cookbook. • Delayed startup of network icon (wi-fi)

  When my Windows 7 Starter netbook boots up and after everything is loaded, it takes about five minutes before the network icon near the clock becomes functional. When there's an available wi-fi signal (which automatically connects to my netbook as preconfigured) after the boot, my netbook seamlessly connects to it even if the network icon cannot be clicked or accessed. (The icon is shown to be loading for about five minutes.) During this time, when I go to Network and Sharing Center, it takes the same time to load. So even while the icon and the Center cannot be accessed, I can surf the Internet. When my netbook was still new, it didn't have this issue. How do I fix this?

• Vertex 2 SSD is running faster than my Vertex 3 SSD?

  I used Acronis Disk Director to do a direct clone of my C:\ windows 7 x64 drive from my Vertex 2 to my new Vertex 3 SSD (Just to show the drive software winstall everything is identical.) I ran a performance test on Windows using the Windows Experience Index. The rating I am receiving when booting on the Vertex 2 is 7.5 While I am getting only a rating for the Vertex 3 of 6.9 My understanding is that the read/write speeds of the Vertex 2 is only up to 250MB/sec while the Vertex 3 is up to 500MB/sec. Copying a single file (3GB in size) from the Vertex 3 to itself was getting speed of approx 70-80MB/sec This speed is no better (maybe worse) than what I got from the Vertex 2 I am connected via the SATA 3 port on the motherboard, using an SATA 3 cable Is this issue caused by the drive cloning? Do I have a bad SSD?
