• Lucid hangs at booting after kernel upgrade

  This weekend, one of our servers running Lucid has installed some upgrades: libgcrypt11 1.4.4-5ubuntu2.1 linux-firmware 1.34.14 linux-image-2.6.32-41-generic 2.6.32-41.91 linux-libc-dev 2.6.32-41.91 Afterwards, it rebooted since this was a kernel upgrade. Now, it hangs at booting, after /scripts/init-bottom. init-bottom itself should not be the problem, the last line I can see is "done". So the problem has to be shortly after that. http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man8/initramfs-tools.8.html tells me, that the next step is procfs and sysfs are moved to the real rootfs and execution is turned over to the init binary which should now be found in the mounted rootfs. But I don't know how and where. The problem exists with older kernels too, and this one here doesn't fix the problem: http://www.tummy.com/journals/entries/jafo_20111003_160440 Anyone an idea?

  Why did Microsoft not provide generic implementation of OrderedDictionary? Surely they had a reason for not building a generic.... but what is it?   We have a site primarily targeted at the UK market, and are adding a US-market alternative. As per Google's recommendations: To indicate to Google that you want the German version of the page to be served to searchers using Google in German, the en-us version to searchers using google.com in English, and the en-gb version to searchers using google.co.uk in English, use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" to identify alternate language versions. Which gives us: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-gb" href="http://www.example.com/page.html" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="http://www.example.com/us/page.html" /> We do get enquiries from other areas of the world - particularly where there are expat communities (Dubai, UAE, Portugal etc). By adding the above tags, is there a risk that Google will only surface our site for UK and US search users? Do we need to specify a catch-all that will default all other searches to our UK site?

• Credentials Not Passed From SharePoint WebPart to WCF Service

  I have spent several hours trying to resolve this problem, so I wanted to share my findings in case someone else might have the same problem. I had a web part which was calling out to a WCF service on another server to get some data. The code I had was essentially using System.ServiceModel; using System.ServiceModel.Channels; ... var binding = new CustomBinding( new HttpTransportBindingElement { AuthenticationScheme = System.Net.AuthenticationSchemes.Negotiate } ); var endpoint = new EndpointAddress(new Uri("http://someotherserver/someotherservice.svc")); var someOtherService = new SomeOtherServiceClient(binding, endpoint); string result = someOtherService.SomeServiceMethod(); This code would run fine on my local instance of SharePoint 2010 (Windows 7 64-bit). However, when I would deploy it to the testing environment, I would get a yellow screen of death  with the following message: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Negotiate'. The authentication header received from the server was 'Negotiate,NTLM'. I then went through the usual checklist of Windows Authentication problems: Check WCF bindings to make sure authentication is set correctly Check IIS to make sure Windows Authentication is enabled and anonymous authentication was disabled. Check to make sure the SharePoint server trusted the server hosting the WCF service Verify that the account that the IIS application pool is running under has access to the other server I then spend lot of time digging into really obscure IIS, machine.config, and trust settings (as well of lots of time on Google and StackOverflow). Eventually I stumbled upon a blog post by Todd Bleeker describing how to run code under the application pool identity. Wait, what? The code is not already running under application pool identity? Another quick Google search led me to an MSDN page that imply that SharePoint indeed does not run under the app pool credentials by default. Instead SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges is needed to run code under the app pool identity. • Vector Graphics in DirectX

  I'm curious as to people's thoughts on the best way to use vector graphics in a directX game instead of rasterized textures(think Super Meat Boy). I want to remain resolution independent and don't want to downscale/upscale rasterized graphics. Also the idea would be for all assets to be vector graphics(again think Super Meat Boy). I've looked at Valve's paper "Improved Alpha-Tested Magnification for Vector Textures and Special Effects" and also looked at using shaders http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems3/gpugems3_ch25.html. Wondering if anyone has done something similar or an alternate approach. Cheers

  I'm managing a video blog. The blog contains a main youtube video on the homepage and several thumbnail images of other videos elsewhere. I have a share button for the main page and the single posts pages and have added opengraph to specify the used image. I want to block certain bots via robots.txt and I am confused as to which part of the User-Agent string to use, especially for more obscure bots. QUESTION What are the scenarios in which performances will be best if keepAliveEnabled = false keepAliveEnabled = true Reference From Load Balancing By default, the BasicHttpBinding sends a connection HTTP header in messages with a Keep-Alive value, which enables clients to establish persistent connections to the services that support them. This configuration offers enhanced throughput because previously established connections can be reused to send subsequent messages to the same server. However, connection reuse may cause clients to become strongly associated to a specific server within the load-balanced farm, which reduces the effectiveness of round-robin load balancing. If this behavior is undesirable, HTTP Keep-Alive can be disabled on the server using the KeepAliveEnabled property with a CustomBinding or user-defined Binding.

• keyboard status leds not working

  Running Ubuntu 13.10 64bit The status leds are not working correctly on my new keyboard under Ubuntu. Pressing Caps Lock and Num Lock do not cause the leds to turn on/off to reflect their status. Rather I have a num lock led stuck on, and a caps lock led that never turns on. The actual function of the caps lock and num lock is unaffected though, just the leds not working. I am able to use ¨setleds¨ to turn the leds on an off from a console session, so I don´t think there's any hardware problem. Also the keyboard does not have the same problem under windows 7. Anyone have any solutions? thanks! • Visual Studio 2010 Setup Projects and x64 Support

  I was taking the Windows Azure CmdLets project and getting it into an MSI just to make it easier to deploy in a nice package.  I ran into problems with the Setup project not being able to properly establish the right registry settings for an x64 environment. Even though you set the target platform on the Setup project to x64 the InstallUtil.lib that get’s run is still x86.  In order to have it work property, you need to follow the steps identified here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kz0ke5xt.aspx  The section “64-bit managed custom actions throw a System.BadImageFormatException exception” covers the steps you need to follow, using the Orca MSI editor to replace the InstallUtilLib.dll from the one that the Setup Project embeds (x86) to a x64 version. • Java 2D Rectangle Collision? [on hold]

  I am just wanting to know of another (longer OR shorter) way of getting 100% effective collisions on a 2D plat-former. The current collision system that is in place works from coords on the level and does not always work reliably. Thank you in advance for any help/support. The current system draws a rectangle and is checking to see if any two points collide.   Some time ago Twitter told that I am similar to Boris Lipschitz . Indeed he is also .Net programmer from Russia living in Australia. I‘ve read his list of Code Review points and found them quite comprehensive. A few points  were not clear for me, and it forced me for a further reading.In particular the statement “Exception should not be used to return a status or an error code.” wasn’t fully clear for me, because sometimes we store an exception as an object with all error details and I believe it’s a valid approach. However I agree that throwing exceptions should be avoided, if you expect to return error as a part of a normal flow. Usually it is used in mocks and prototypes.I had to look further to clarify “Dependency injection is used instead of Service Location pattern”.Even most of articles has some preferences to Dependency injection, there are also advantages to use Service Location. If there is a chance that not used code will be required in a future, it is convenient to keep it as commented or #if/#endif blocks with appropriate explanation, why it could be required in the future. TFS is a good source control system, but context search in source code of current solution is much easier than finding something in the previous versions of the code.I also found a link to a good book “Clean Code.A.Handbook.of.Agile.Software”

• Set up linux box for hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! Because of the ONBOOT=yes line in the ifcfg-eth1:1 file, this interface will be brought up when the system boots, or the network starts/restarts. service network restart Shutting down interface eth0: [ OK ] Shutting down interface eth1: [ OK ] Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up interface eth0: [ OK ] Bringing up interface eth1: [ OK ] ping 192.168.1.3 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.105 ms And this is where I'm at. I will keep editing this as I make progress. Any tips on how to Configure virtual interfaces/ip based virtual hosts for SSL, setting up a CA, or anything else would be appreciated.

• Outlook Search starting date

  I am having a problem with Outlook 2003 search on 2 desktops - 1 XP, 1 Windows 7. They are both connected to the same exchange 2007 server. There are several other users connected to the same server, inside the lan and outside using RPC none of whom are having this issue. When the user searches Outlook, search starts from the date Outlook OST file was created and then searches more recent items. The result is that if user is searching for some phrase, e.g. "Blade" in their inbox folder, search results from months ago are returned first then the more recent results. If i delete the OST file and restart Outlook it rebuilds a new one, and resynchronizes normally, then search works normally again, however approximately 6 weeks later the problem will start again (see second paragraph). Anyone experience this ? Any Suggestions ?

• How do you exclude yourself from Google Analytics on your website using cookies?

  I'm trying to set up an exclusion filter with a browser cookie, so that my own visits to my don't show up in my Google Analytics. I tried 3 different methods and none of them have worked so far. I would like help understanding what I am doing wrong and how I can fix this. Method 1 First, I tried following Google's instructions, http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55481, for excluding traffic by Cookie Content: Create a new page on your domain, containing the following code: <body onLoad="javascript:pageTracker._setVar('test_value');"> Method 2 Next, when that didn't work, I googled around and found this Google thread, http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google%20Analytics/thread?tid=4741f1499823fcd5&hl=en, where the most popular answer says to use a slightly different code: SHS Analytics wrote: <body onLoad="javascript:_gaq.push(['_setVar','test_value']);"> Thank you! This has now set a __utmv cookie containing "test_value", whereas the original: pageTracker._setVar('test_value') (which Google is still recommending) did not manage to do that for me (in Mac Safari 5 and Firefox 3.6.8). So I tried this code, but it didn't work for me. So I tried this too, but still had no luck with trying to exclude myself from Google Analytics. Re-iterate question So, I tried all 3 methods above with no success. Am I doing something wrong? How can I exclude myself from my Google Analytics using an exclusion cookie for my browser? Update I've been testing this for several days now, and I've confirmed that the 2nd method of excluding yourself from tracking does indeed work. The problem was that the filter settings weren't properly applied to my profile, which has been corrected. See the accepted answer below.

  What do you call it when a web site (especially corporate/retail) has a series of rows with thumbnails, each with a little caption/description beneath explaining some benefit or feature of a product or service. Is there a name for this? I'm building a theme that incorporates this kind of design and I was hoping there is some kind of shorthand for this design feature. • Removing date from Google SERP

  We are going through our site analysing the SEO. I find that sometimes on a google results page, some results show a date, others don't. Example (from same query): I prefer the result not to have the date in it, as 20 Oct 2009 probably has an adverse effect on the clickability of the result. Is this Google putting it in? Or the page itself? Or a combination of both (IE, if over a certain age, it includes date). • Adding Bzr Launchpad PPA to Ubuntu Hardy

  I've got TortoiseBazaar installed on my Windows laptop, and I was trying to branch a repository hosted on my VPS to another directory on my VPS, and I got this lovely error: bzr: ERROR: Unknown branch format: 'Bazaar Branch Format 7 (needs bzr 1.6) That lead me to this mailing-list archive: http://osdir.com/ml/bazaar/2009-06/msg00692.html Then I tried following the instructions here to add the Launchpad PPA to /etc/apt/sources.list, but they forgot to mention that you need to do this: sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com D702BF6B8C6C1EFD Which I found out about here after I got this error: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net hardy Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY D702BF6B8C6C1EFD after modifying my /etc/apt/sources.list and running: sudo apt-get update Just thought I'd save someone else some pain. And of course, don't forget to uninstall the version of bzr that wouldn't play ball in the first place.

• App_Offline.htm, taking site down for maintenance

  There is much simpler and graceful way to shut down a site while doing upgrade to avoid the problem of people accessing site in the middle of a content update.   Basically, if you place file with name 'app_offline.htm' with below contents in the root of a web application directory, ASP.NET will shut-down the application,  and stop processing any new incoming requests for that application.  ASP.NET will also then respond to all requests for dynamic pages in the application by sending back the content of the app_offline.htm file (for example: you might want to have a “site under construction” or “down for maintenance” message).   Then after upgrade, just rename/delete app_offline.htm file…and the site would be back to normal. • GNOME Shell Overview animation is slow on my NVIDIA 320M

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my MacBook Air 11" (late 2010 model 3,1). Compiz runs fine, as well as most of GNOME Shell's animations. The animation for switching to and from GNOME Shell overview is just very slow. Unfortunately, it's the most common animation on Shell. I already applied cd ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell $ curl http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=157326 > shell-animations-nvidia.patch $ git am shell-animations-nvidia.pat that I found from http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/SwatList , but the issue's still here. How do I fix this?

• All day optimizer event....
