• n00b: receive input over TCP/IP and use it to update HTML

  This has got to be a FAQ, so can someone please just direct me to a "network programming for dummies" URL? The server wants to push information to a client or broadcast to all, when an event happens - as opposed to the clients constantly polling the server "just in case". The client then updates a browser page display. How do I do that? (toldya it was a n00b question) Should I have a thread which receives info on a socket and then writes it to a database which the browser display (PHP) can process with an HTML refresh tag, or what? Sorry to sound so dumb.

• which layout engine for finding coordinates of html elements on the web page?

  I am doing some web data classification task and was thinking if I could get the co-ordinates of html elements as they would appear on a web-browser without taking into consideration any css or javascript being referred in the web page. My language of programming is c++ and the need results for a couple million of pages, so it has to be fast. I know there is a Microsoft COM component which renders the page in a web browser control and then can be queried for position of different html tags. But this is not suitable in my case as it first renders the whole page which takes up a lot of time. So as I found out, there are open-source layout engines WebKit, Gecko that can probably be used for this. But that's a huge piece of code and I need someone to direct me to the right classes or right modules to look into or any previous/similar work someone has done previously. Also, please let me know what you guys think is a good choice if I want to customize the existing code for use with multiple threads to make it faster. Thanks

• Unzip a folder which is programatically downloaded in Silverlight

  Hi all, My requirement is this. I am programmatically downloading a folder from a remote server in zipped format using WebClient. This part is done. My folder will have only DLLs and EXEs. • Does HTML5 make Javascript gaming safer (more secure)?

  I know that Javascript is an incredibly unsecure way of programming a persistent game, where for instance you are doing battle calculations in an RPG and then award XP through linking to a PHP page when they win that adds XP to a database (since the player could make their own javascript to always win or just look at the PHP page that you get sent to when you win and just go there anyway). So with that said, I'm wondering if HTML5 makes multiplayer/persistent games any safer in this regard, since I know it still uses Javascript. Or am I still doomed to rely entirely on server-side scripting for doing any calculations that award the player?

• Touch event missing when pushing new view

  Hello, I am new in iPhone programming. At the moment I am trying to recognize a constant touch. For example I want the user to leave his finger on the screen for the whole application. I use a navigationcontroller which holds the different views. If the user now touches the screen in view1 and then the view is changed to view2 by pushing it on the stack (with pushviewcontroller) with still touching the screen then there are no touch events recognized by view2. If the user then releases his finger (no touch event) and touches the screen again then all events are recognized. Is this a bug or am I doing something totally wrong? I haven't found any answer on this. Could someone help me?

• Java EE - newbie question (not related to learning JEE)

  I've read lot of articles saying, that Java EE is most popular enterprise solution nowadays. Let's not argue if it is most popular or second most popular or what. The thing is : I see almost all web pages with extension like .html, .php and .aspx. Why there is (almost) none .JSP ? Why so ease to find ASP.NET pages if it is supposed to be less popular? Please I am not programming with Java EE (yet) so don't blame me, if I am completely wrong. The answer with patience would be greatly appreciated!

• how to integrate Zend Framework MVC with existing site

  Hi guys, So I'm slowly tackling OO and Zend Framework and their MVC process in particular. I have an existing website and web-based calendar application that was designed by me, but coded by a different person and done procedurally. I understand that it will be very difficult for my application to ever be completely OO without a full re-write, and I'm fine with that. I have a lot of updates and modifications I want to do in the future, so I'm wanting to start replacing some of the basic components (login, authentication. etc) now, and continue to learn as I go. Again, I'm really a newbie at programming and OO. What I'm wondering is if I'm wanting to incorporate the Framework, then would I just first drop my whole site into the /public folder of the Framework and then start pulling functionality out from there?

  Sharpening the sword: All I've read in the developer community suggests that I should keep learning and studying to become the best developer I can. This will make me better at my job and more valuable as an employee. Cutting my head off: However there seems to be an influx of cheap programming labor constantly coming int to the market(college, foreign countries, etc.) I was part of that influx when I graduated. So my question is, What is the likely outcome? Will there always be a job where a skilled-programmer(Grey-Beard) will have a place to work and contribute, or will he eventually price himself out of the market by having such great knowledge and skill?

  I'm creating a multi-threaded application in Linux. here is the scenario: Suppose I am having x instance of a class BloomFilter and I have some y GB of data(greater than memory available). I need to test membership for this y GB of data in each of the bloom filter instance. It is pretty much clear that parallel programming will help to speed up the task moreover since I am only reading the data so it can be shared across all processes or threads. • What should i do to practise?

  Hi guys I start a year long industrial placement in september where i will be coding in java predominantly. I am going to use the summer to brush up on my java as in year one of the degree java was the main language taught for OOP modules. However this year i have had no java exposure except for an algorithms module, which was one of eight, so as you can see i am probably getting really rusty!. What i wanted to know is, how does the "real world" java programming differ from university coding and what do you suggest i brush up on that would be different to my normal workings. As a start i definatley need to get familiar with a professional IDE like netbeans, opoosed to havign used BlueJ throughout but more specifically what coding practises should i get more familiar with I appreciate they wont expect me to be a qualified full developer and will give me time, but i would like to hit the ground running as it were, with me having full hopes to secure a perminant position after i finish my degree. • Copying blocks (ie: copying them to instance variables) in Objective-C

  I'm trying to understand blocks. I get how to use them normally, when passed directly to a method. I'm interested now in taking a block, storing it (say) in an instance variable and calling it later. The blocks programming guide makes it sound like I can do this, by using Block_copy / retain to copy the block away, but when I try to run it I crash my program. - (void) setupStoredBlock { int salt = 42; m_storedBlock = ^(int incoming){ return 2 + incoming + salt; }; [m_storedBlock retain]; } I try to call it later: - (void) runStoredBlock { int outputValue = m_storedBlock(5); NSLog(@"When we ran our stored blockwe got back: %d", outputValue); [m_storedBlock release]; } Anyone have any insights? • Has anybody managed to teach themself strong OOP skills through mainly developing with JavaScript?

  I am trying to do this, I'm a full time front-end dev and am aware that I am struglling to achieve this. When I am referring to OOP skills I am referring to understanding and being familiar with concepts like inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, abstaction. I am aware that it may be more likely to achieve what I'm after by focusing on another language in my spare time. This is the plan, but I'd be really intrigued to hear if anybody has managed to achieve this purely through JavaScript and how you did it. It'd be even better to hear from strong OOP developers from who use different programming languages to know if they have worked with developers who have managed to achieve this.

  I download the Gurobi package for linear programming. I import the corresponding gurobi.jar package. Then run the example program. Then it appears the following errors: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: C:\gurobi460\win64\win64\bin\GurobiJni46.dll: Can't load AMD 64-bit .dll on a IA 32-bit platform Then I downloaded the window 64 bit Jre, and use the "window--preference--Installed JRE" to install this new JRE. However, it still appeared this error. Could you help me? Thank you !

• Location of various javax.xml.* packages within the Java 6 SDK.

  Alright, so recently I was using Notepad++ for all of my programming needs, but I've started using Eclipse for larger-scale Java projects now. I decided to pick up an old project of mine which used various classes within the "javax.xml.*" namespaces. When I was compiling and running the program with Notepad++ it worked just fine, however Eclipse can't seem to find these packages. My question is this, since I obviously have the classes somewhere within my current installation of JDK 6 (since I had no problems when using Notepad++), where can I find the location of the .JAR file(s) that include these namespaces/classes so that I can add them to my Eclipse project? • Python, implementing proxy support for a socket based application (not urllib2)

  Hey guys, I am little stumped: I have a simple messenger client program (pure python, sockets), and I wanted to add proxy support (http/s, socks), however I am a little confused on how to go about it. I am assuming that the connection on the socket level will be done to the proxy server, at which point the headers should contain a CONNECT + destination IP (of the chat server) and authentication, (if proxy requires so), however the rest is a little beyond me. How is the subsequent connection handled, specifically the reading/writing, etc... Are there any guides on proxy support implementation for socket based (tcp) programming in Python? Thank you

I was considering using the textbook my school uses (An introduction to programing using visual basic 2008, but I wold get the 2010 version), but I was wondering if there were better resources I could use. • Client / Server security from mobile to website

  Hey. Am new to the world of web programming and learning a bunch of fairly simple new pieces of tech, trying to piece them all together. So, we have a simple client (currently iPhone, to move to J2ME soon) that's pulling down lists of data via PHP, which is talking to a MySQL db. I have a rudimentary user/login system so that data is only served to someone who matches a known user etc, either on the website or on the client. All the php scripts on the website that query the DB check to make sure an active session is in place, otherwise dumping the user back to the login screen. I've read a little about SSL and want to know if that is sufficient to protect the website AND the data passing between the server and the client?

• Designing a peer to peer network

  I am designing a simple peer to peer network. The basic architecture will be as follows: A central server- that keeps track of all the peers. The job of this server is to keep track of all the peers that join the network. Every peer could do things: a. Download a file from it's peer b. Push a file (send a file) to it's peer. Could anybody please tell me what would be the best design for such a system? What would be the problems that i might run into and so on. I am planning to use Java as the programming language to implement. Would it be a good choice? • Any active Bold for Delphi users ?

  What are you using as a persistance framework when programming in Delphi? If the application is growing it soon became really complicated to handle the model in SQL ? Bold is a persistance framework for Delphi win32 that really deserve more attention. I use it daily and using OCL instead of SQL to get data from the database saves a lot of time and debugging. When the model is changed Bold translate this to an SQL script and change the database. EDIT: For those that are interested in Bold for Delphi I have spend this evening on create a site on Google about it. I'm not a guru in html so the design is maybe not so exciting. • Metric to measure object-orientedness

  Is there a metric that can assist in determining the object-orientedness of a system or application? I've seen some pretty neat metrics in the .NET Reflector Add-ins codeplex project, but nothing like this yet. If such a metric doesn't exist, would it even be possible or useful? There are the 3 supposed tenets of object-oriented programming: encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism; a tool that ranked programs against these might be able to show areas of a C# (or similar) code base where the whole object-oriented ideal was discarded, and perhaps how many bugs are associated with that area versus the rest of the project.

• Do I have to have an 'unregister' button on my users on an email altering application?

I have the whole thing dusted but I haven't got an 'unregister button' I know its good UI to have one, but I was hoping if someone knew the legalities of the topic? The user can sign in and uncheck what alerts to receive, but not scrub their details - On the email sent I have an unsubscribe button. Seeing as this is going to the public, can I turn round to my boss and say "by law we need one" else he might just turn around and try and charge the client, and I don't agree with that for something so rudimentary

• How do I set up a test duplicate of a Django and Postgresql based web application?

  Not sure if this is an excessively broad and newbie-ish question for Stack Overflow but here goes: I paid someone else to build a web application for me and now I want to tweak certain aspects of it myself. I learn best by trial and error – changing stuff and seeing what happens. Obviously that's not a great way to treat a live site, so I need to duplicate the site on some kind of test server which I can play with without fear of the consequences. Unfortunately the closest I've come to programming has been creating ActionScript-based websites. I've never touched a database. So I really don't know where to start with setting up a test server. I would really appreciate any advice about where to start. I am completely ignorant and lost here. The web application is built in python/django using a Postgresql database. I use Mac OS X 10.6 if that makes any difference.

• Make a usable Join relationship with LINQ on top of a database CSV design error

  I'm looking for a way to fix and/or abstract away a comma-separated values (CSV) list in a database field in order to reconstruct a usable relationship such that I can properly join the two tables below and query them using LINQ and its Join method. Following is a sample showing the Person table and CsvArticleIds field having a CSV value to represent a one-to-many association with Article records. TABLE [dbo].[Person] Id Name CsvArticleIds -- ---------- -------- 1 Joe "15,22" 5 Ed "22" 10 Arnie "8,15,22" ^^^(Of course a link table should have been created; nonetheless the relationship with articles is trapped inside that list of CSV values.) Elegant is nice too. not looking for efficiency because this is part of a one-time data migration task and can take as long as it wants to run.
