Rails transaction: save data in multiple models.

Controller code might look something like this: class MyController def bid @ab = AuctionBid.new(params[:auction_bid]) @ab.user = current_user if @ab.save render :json => {:response => 'YAY!'} else render :json => {:response => 'FAIL!'} end end end desired functionality This works great so far! However, I need to ensure a couple other things happen. @ab.auction.bid_count needs to be incremented by one. @ab.user.bid_count needs to be incremented by one @ab.auction.current_winner_id needs to be set to @ab.user_id That is, the User and the Auction associated with the AuctionBid need values updated as well in order for the AuctionBid#save to return true.

How come you cannot catch Code Contract exceptions?

System.Diagnostics.Contracts.ContractException is not accessiable in my test project. Note this code is purely myself messing around with my shiney new copy of Visual Studio, but I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong. I'm using the professional edition of VS, therefore I do not have static checking. In order to still use code contracts (which I like) I figured the only way my method can work is to catch the exception that is thrown at runtime, but I'm not finding this possible. PHP: Type hints for fields with Eclipse PDT

Using Eclipse + PDT, I know that you can specify the return type of a method or the type of a variable within a method via type hints. How about class fields? Can I declare the type of a field in order to enable autocompletion for that variable? I tried something on the lines of: class MyClass { protected $Field; /* @var $Field MyType */ ... but it doesn't work. Is there a way to achieve autocompletion of class fields with Eclipse and PDT? thanks, Silvio

How do laziness and I/O work together in Haskell?

I'm trying to get a deeper understanding of laziness in Haskell. I was imagining the following snippet today: data Image = Image { name :: String, pixels :: String } image :: String -> IO Image image path = Image path <$> readFile path The appeal here is that I could simply create an Image instance and pass it around; if I need the image data it would be read lazily - if not, the time and memory cost of reading the file would be avoided: main = do image <- image "file" putStrLn $ length $ pixels image But is that how it actually works? How is laziness compatible with IO? Will readFile be called regardless of whether I access pixels image or will the runtime leave that thunk unevaluated if I never refer to it? If the image is indeed read lazily, then isn't it possible I/O actions could occur out of order? For example, what if immediately after calling image I delete the file? Now the putStrLn call will find nothing when it tries to read.

Simple MySQL Query taking 45 seconds (Gets a record and its "latest" child record)

I have a query which gets a customer and the latest transaction for that customer. Currently this query takes over 45 seconds for 1000 records. This is especially problematic because the script itself may need to be executed as frequently as once per minute! I believe using subqueries may be the answer, but I've had trouble constructing it to actually give me the results I need. SELECT customer.CustID, customer.leadid, customer.Email, customer.FirstName, customer.LastName, transaction.*, MAX(transaction.TransDate) AS LastTransDate FROM customer INNER JOIN transaction ON transaction.CustID = customer.CustID WHERE customer.Email = '".$email."' GROUP BY customer.CustID ORDER BY LastTransDate LIMIT 1000 I really need to get this figured out ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A few web searches yield all sorts of contradictory advice on linking from an iPhone app to an app on the store. I need to modify a column in a SQLite database but I have to do it programatically due to the database already being in production. From my research I have found that in order to do this I must do the following. Create a new table with new schema Copy data from old table to new table Drop old table Rename new table to old tables name That seems like a ridiculous amount of work for something that should be relatively easy. Is there not an easier way? All I need to do is change a constraint on a existing column and give it a default value.

Python list comprehension to return edge values of a list

If I have a list in python such as: stuff = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9] with length n (in this case 9) and I am interested in creating lists of length n/2 (in this case 4). I want all possible sets of n/2 values in the original list, for example: [1, 2, 3, 4], [2, 3, 4, 5], ..., [9, 1, 2, 3] is there some list comprehension code I could use to iterate through the list and retrieve all of those sublists? I don't care about the order of the values within the lists, I am just trying to find a clever method of generating the lists.

Preoder traversal of a Btree

I'm trying to figure out how to do a preorder traversal of a Btree. I know that generally preorder traversal works like this: preorder(node) { print value in node preorder(left child) preorder(right child) } What's confusing to me is how to make this work with a Btree, since in each node there are multiple values and multiple child pointers. When printing values, do all the values in the node get printed before descending into the left child? Each node looks like this: child1 value1 child2 value2 child3 value3 child4 Also, why would anyone want to do a preorder traversal of a Btree, since an inorder traversal is what will display the values in ascending order?

Passing Activity to non-activity object properly

In my app ive got a non-activity object which it's role is being a manager class. many times i need to pass "source activity" to methods as parameter to that manager class in order to make some operations on that activity. for exaple let's assume we have MyActivity which gotta do some toast. so i have this manager class called MyManager, and i have this method in it raiseToast(Activity sourceActivity) { Toast.makeText(sourceActivity, demo, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } and from Myactivity class we calling that method this way: MyManager manager=new MyManager(); manager.raitetoast(MyActivity.this); it works fine. what I'm asking here, is this a proper way to pass an Activity as parameter to a non-activity object? I'm having a memory leaks on real device(not the emulator), I wonder if this could also causing any reason for that? Thanks Idan.

user table with javaDB and hybernate from within grails

let's see if I can ask this in an understandable way... I started with grails and created a domain class called user. As far as I understand, hybernate is used to map this domain class to the database. This works pretty fine with hsqldb. Now I tried to switch to javaDB and get an error message because the table is called "user" (which seems to be a reserverd word for javaDB). So a statement like create table user ... will result in an error message. create table "user" ... works, but hybernate seems not put put the table name in quotes. How can I configure hybernate to use quotes in order to make it work with my table name? PS: yes, I know, I could map the domain class to another table name... :-)

UITextFields losing values after UINavigationController activity

This is going to be hard to demonstrate in code, but maybe you can picture it with me. I have a view that contains two UITextFields, "title" and "descr". That same view contains two UIButtons that push another controller onto the navController to get more detail from the user about the object we're assembling and ultimately uploading to my server. It appears that pushing another view on, doing something, and popping it back off results in the two UITextFields keeping their content VISUALLY, but the .text property of those fields becomes NULL. I've confirmed that if I do my two push-pop fields before filling in those UITextFields, I get my data when I upload, and if I do them in the opposite order, I don't. It LOOKS like there's data there, but I get nothing when I NSLog their .text properties. Is this normal? Do I need to just design around this? Or is this as weird as it seems, and I should be looking deeper at causes of this?

Where to start with Direct2d?

Interested in learning Direct2d to create a Windows 8 app, but after 2 hours of research I'm thoroughly confused. Samples like this (Creating a Simple Direct2D Application) seem to assume you know what an HWND and HRESULT is, and how the Windows API works in general. My question is this: do you need an understanding of the Win API, COM, OLE, and all this other Windows stuff in order to get a good grasp on Direct2d/3d? All the other barebones tutorials assume that you know all this stuff and I don't really know where to start. The startup D2D project in VS 2012 gives you a bunch of files but there's no main or WinMain... How does this program even start?

Java and C#, how close are they?

I've been using C/C++ and Python pretty seriously, but I now I see that a lot of new programming books use Java or C# as examples. I don't think I'll use Java or C# for the time being, but I guess I have to study one of the languages (or both of them) in order to read and understand the books. How similar Java and C#? If I learn Java, is learning C# almost free? Or vice versa? If I have to choose only one of the two languages, which would be better? Which has wider coverage in terms of programming language?

Using Base SAS to validate Windows Password

We have a signon script that requires a Windows password in order to access and validate against the SAS metadata server. The problem is that if the windows password is changed, and the script is run a few without being updated, then the user gets locked out and has to call IT support for a password reset. What is the simplest way of using Base SAS to validate a windows password? ie to enable a warning to the user if the password provided is not valid... EDIT: The concern is not whether or not this SHOULD be done, only HOW it could be done!

I would like to add up and down voting to my iPhone appilcation - MyStacks, for this I need the to be able to authenticate the user with SO. I'm look at adapting the Twitter-OAuth-iPhone library. However The problem I have is obtaining the consumer and secret key. to use OAuth, do I need to obtain a different key for each provider? In order to obtain a consumer key from google the application needs to have a domain name, but this being an iPhone app of course i don't have one, does this mean that I can't use OAuth? Is there any other way to programatically authenticate SO? Thanks, Ben

There is a table of currencies rates in MS SQL Server 2005: ID | CURR | RATE | DATE 1 | USD | 30 | 01.10.2010 3 | GBP | 45 | 07.10.2010 5 | USD | 31 | 08.10.2010 7 | GBP | 46 | 09.10.2010 9 | USD | 32 | 12.10.2010 11 | GBP | 48 | 03.10.2010 Rate are updated in real time and there are more than 1 billion rows in the table. It needs to write a SQL-query, wich will provide latest rates per each currency. My decision is: SELECT c.[id],c.[curr],c.[rate],c.[date] FROM [curr_rate] c, (SELECT curr, MAX(date) AS rate_date FROM [curr_rate] GROUP BY curr) t WHERE c.date = t.rate_date AND c.curr = t.curr ORDER BY c.[curr] ASC Is it possible to write a query without sub-queries and join's with derived tables?

How do you use scripting language (PHP, Python, etc) to improve your productivity?

Hi, I'm a Delphi developer on the Windows platform, recently read the PHP tutorial at W3CSchools, it looks interesting. We all know scripting languages are very good at web site development, but I also want to utilize it to improve my productivity or get some tedious tasks done quickly, maybe some quick-and-dirty string/file processing? How do you usually do with scripting languages apart from software development? And we need a responsive, decent IDE/editor in order to gain productivity when writing scripts for this purpose? I'm quite new with as3 via cs4 so please bear with me. I'm trying to make a phone book type list that displays the users name, cellnumber and possible a delete button. --- Bob 09XXXXXXXXX delete --- Sussie 09XXXXXXXXX delete --- Johnny 09XXXXXXXXX delete --- I've tried making a list and added to it a XML dataprovider <profiles> <profile> <label>Bob</label> ... </profile> It'll then display a list of names Bob Sussie Johnny But what do I have to do in order to get it print like fig 1? I know that it has something to do with CellRender but I can't seem to find any decent examples in Google.

MySQL configuration that allows for locking many tables?

I need to do a MySQLDump on a DB with ~700 tables and when I try with my current configuration, I get an error: mysqldump: Got error: 1016: Can't open file: './my_db/content_node_field_instance.frm' (errno: 24) when using LOCK TABLES Searching around I've found that this happens because it tries to lock all tables and fails because they are "too many". I know I can try lock-tables=no and get a dump, but this way my DB might be in an inconsistent state. So, does anyone know what is the MySQL configuration setting I need to change in order to be able to do the locking I need? I'm running 5.1.37-1ubuntu5.1 with MyISAM. Thanks!
