• Inconsistent black levels in windows 7 media center

  I've got a HTPC running windows 7 64bit, hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV. My problem is different types of video are displaying different black levels on the TV. When I play a bluray through Arcsoft Total Media Theater I have to set the "HDMI Black Level" to "normal" in the TV picture options menu. When I play recorded TV through WMC I have to set it to "low" otherwise the black colors on the video are washed out and grey. Is there any way to configure the system so all videos are displayed with the same black level? The hdmi black level setting is deep in Samsung's menus so it's becoming a chore to keep switching it everytime I watch a different type of video. I'm using an ATI 4670 graphics card with HDMI output going straight to the TV. In the ATI catalyst control center I've got pixel format set to RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB) since the TV wont allow me to change the HDMI black level if I choose one of the other settings.

• No option to select ASP.Net Version in IIS 6?

  I'm running Windows Server 2003 64bit edition. I've just installed the .Net 4 Framework in order to get a new WCF service up and running. However, I have no options anywhere in IIS 6 for selecting the ASP.Net framework version. I.e. Right click Properties on the website should have as ASP.Net tab from where I should be able to select v2 or v4. Does anyone know why they're not there and how I can make them appear? For the time being I've had to go into Website Properties Home Directory Configuration and change the .svc extension to use v4.0.30319 instead. So, everything's now working for my WCF service, however every other extension is set to v2. How can I get the tab? It's not visible on any of my 23 websites.

• How do I enable in-place tablet pc input panel for non tablet PCs?

  Hi all, Is it possible to enable the in-place tablet PC input panel on a non-tablet PC? I have checked the "For tablet pen input, show the Input Panel icon next to the text entry area when possible" checkbox in the options of the Input Panel. Does this not work because pen input is something different than mouse input? I do have a touch screen, but it just emulates a mouse (moving the cursor, pressing the left mouse button and such). I can get the Input Panel to show manually by starting tabtip.exe and then event the ink works, but I cannot get it to show (itself or it's in-place icon) when I activate text input controls. Does anyone know what's up?

• Security in a private web service

  I am developing a web site and a web service for a small on-line game. Technically, I'll be using Express (node.js) and MongoDB+Redis for the databases. This the structure I came up with: One Express server that will server as the Web Service. This will connect to the databases. One Express server that will provide the web site. It will connect to the Web Service to retrieve and push the information. iOS and Android application will be able to interact with the WebService. Taking into account: It is a small game. The information transferred is not critical. There will NOT be third party applications. At least for the moment. My concern is about which level of security I should use in each of the scenarios: Security of the user playing through web browser Security of the applications and the Web Server connecting to the WS. I have take a look at the different options and: OAuth and/or Https is too much for this scenario, isn't it? Will be a good option to hash the user and password with MD5(or similar) and some salt? I would like to get some directions and investigate by my own rather than getting a response like "you should you use this node.js module..." Thanks in advance,

• Disable Bing search entirely from IE when using sysprep

  I'm creating a Windows Server 2012 R2 image for our product (an all-in-one appliance installed on server hardware) and I am having incredible trouble with getting Bing removed from Internet Explorer. Our clients do not want Bing at all, not as a default search, not as a "search from address bar" feature, not in any sense. I've managed to configure everything else that I want in IE using WAIK to generate an unattend XML file but this has me completely stuck. Ideally I want Bing removed from IE altogether but I would make do with it just being completely disabled. I can find no options in either WAIK or Group Policy to configure this as I need it. Any ideas gratefully received.

• Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

  I have a service for which I'm about to upgrade the authentication. However, I'm trying to ensure that I make the right decision about where the encryption algorithms occur. I currently have two options: option 1) the authentication module is deployed to the client as a javascript library over https and executes client-side, so that the client can POST back an encrypted string. option 2) the authentication module is kept server-side so that the client need only POST back an unencrypted string. I know that many http proxies cache/log the query-string (and therefore any query parameters), but does anyone know of any http proxies that cache the headers as well? If the headers are being cached, then I'll clearly want to encrypt the password inside the SSL encryption, because to my understanding the headers of an HTTPS request may not always be encrypted (depending on the capabilities of the browser etcetera). Can anyone shed any light on the caching of headers by http proxies? Do you have one that does, or know of one that does?

• Guidance in naming awkward domain-specific objects?

  I'm modeling a chemical system, and I'm having problems with naming my objects within an enum. I'm not sure if I should use: the atomic formula the chemical name an abbreviated chemical name. For example, sulfuric acid is H2SO4 and hydrochloric acid is HCl. With those two, I would probably just use the atomic formula as they are reasonably common. However, I have others like sodium hexafluorosilicate which is Na2SiF6. In that example, the atomic formula isn't as obvious (to me) but the chemical name is hideously long: myEnum.SodiumHexaFluoroSilicate. I'm not sure how I would be able to safely come up with an abbreviated chemical name that would have a consistent naming pattern. From a maintenance point of view, which of the options would you prefer to see and why? Some details from comments on this question: Audience for the code will be just programmers, not chemists. I'm using C#, but I think this question is more interesting when ignoring the implementation language I'm starting with 10 - 20 compounds and would have at most 100 compounds. The enum is to facilitate common calculations - the equation is the same for all compounds but you insert a property of the compound to complete the equation. For example, Molar mass (in g/mol) is used when calculating the number of moles from a mass (in grams) of the compound. Another example of a common calculation is the Ideal Gas Law and its use of the Specific Gas Constant

• How to join video files from terminal?

  I have tried avidemux2_cli, mencoder, ffmpeg, cat.. But this doesn't always work (With the most of the times the error is that the audio codec is not the same) Maybe i put wrong options in the commands. So the commands: cat Sample.avi rrr.avi > complete.avi ffmpeg -i Sample.avi -i output.avi -vcodec copy -acodec copy complete.avi mencoder -ovc lavc -oac copy Sample.avi rrr.avi -o complete.avi avidemux2_cli --audio-codec copy --video-codec copy --output-format avi --load Sample.avi -append output.avi --save video.avi The cat problem is that it doesn't show error but it doesn't work always..Like the complete.avi will be exactly the same with Sample.avi Fmmpeg does nothing. The complete.avi is always the same with Sample.avi Mencoder error: All files must have identical audio codec and format for -oac copy. So the complete.avi is the same with Sample.avi avidemux2_cli there is no error but the complete.avi is again the same with Sample.avi.. So to sum up, all complete.avi are the same with Sample.avi.. And the problem is that they don't have the same audio codec ( i quess ).. Any ideas?

  Hi! Once upon a time, my pc suite had a function to prepare ringtones and upload them to the E65. Now I find myself with the all-new Nokia PC Suite 7.1 and I cannot find anything which resembles that function. I used to select a midi file, add some options, listen to a preview, and then upload it. It would appear among the ringing tones when customizing profiles. I tried this "Nokia Music" which is linked from the PC Suite, but it won't recognize the headset. What can I do?

• Problems setting up home web server

  Has anyone been able to get a server working with the router smcwbr14t-g? Although I have been able to get Apache set up correctly and my website works on the internal IP 192.168.2.101, I've been running into a dead end when trying to get it to show up on my external IP. In my router, there is no option for port forwarding, but there are options for a 'virtual server'. Following the manual, I have it set up like this: http://imgur.com/zrcV7.png I also disabled the firewall. I configured Apache to listen to ports 80, 81, and 443, none of which solved the problem. However, the IP's 192.168.2.101:443 and :81 load fine. The problem is that I still cannot load the web site from my external IP, either from my computer or outside.

• Mac friendly file sharing from VirtualBox

  I have set up Ruby on Rails on Ubuntu into a VirtualBox instance on my PC, I enabled Samba and I'm connecting to it via the home network from my Mac. All is fine except that I have some issues deleting some files from inside applications e.g. in Sublime Text 2 when I right click a file in the browser and select delete nothing happens (same in my Git client). To be able to delete files I have to navigate to the folder in Finder (which leaves those nasty .DS_Store files scattered all around) or issue the delete command from the terminal (inconvenient). If you're asking why I'm using VirtualBox for Rails instead of doing the development directly on the Mac it's because the ease of portability. So my question is: are there any network sharing options which I could use to make the Linux instance play nicer with my Mac?

  I have installed php, mySQL, postfix and sendmail and have set up a simple email script on my local host server. mail() returns 1 (TRUE) when I send an e-mail, however the email does not arrive at the destination. Installation The mail functions are part of the PHP core. There is no installation needed to use these functions. Requirements For the mail functions to be available, PHP requires an installed and working email system. The program to be used is defined by the configuration settings in the php.ini file. I saw in vim's help (:help 'statusline) that one can set a fixed width of some items. How would you go about fixing the above items in a way, that if one item is missing, or no matter of its width, that it doesn't affect the other ones ? (i.e. so I can always look at a known position and know what is there ... not move my eyes left and right searching for the thing I need).

But their own cloud storage service,Windows Live SkyDrive, complicated these simple and daily used operations. We need a guide to figure out how to perform basic copy/move operations. Couple of years ago we wrote about moving files between folders in old version of SkyDrive but the guide does not hold good today as SkyDrive has gone through many user interface changes in the recent past. Today one of our readers asked us how to move/copy files in the latest version of SkyDrive and here are the steps to be followed 1. Login to your Windows Live SkyDrive 2. Select the file you want to Move or Copy by clicking on the information icon (see 2 in below image) 3. After selecting the information icon, expand Information section displayed on the right side panel to access Move and Copy options (see 3 in the below image). 4. To move the selected file to another folder, select Move option and Sky Drive will guide you through folder selection user interface for choosing the target folder. 5. • Wacom Bamboo CTH460L issues in Ubuntu 10.04

  I recently bought a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch CTH460L. I installed doctormo PPA, however, the pen functionality didn't work and the touch was very glitchy (when I touched it, it immediately double clicked and began to drag elements in the screen). I tried to configure it using the wacom-utility package in the Synaptic Package Manager (version 1.21-1) but that didn't work either. Then I followed this post (#621, written by aaaalex), and after some problems trying to restart Ubuntu (graphics related problems), the pen works fine (it could be better, though) but the touch functionality doesn't work anymore. Currently I have installed xserver-xorg-input-wacom (1:0.10.11-0ubuntu7), wacom-dkms (0.8.10.2-1ubuntu1) and wacom-utility. The Wacom Utility only displays an "options" field under "Wacom BambooPT 2FG 4X5" but no other option to configure it. What is the correct way to get this tablet working on Ubuntu 10.04?. By the way, currently I can't start Ubuntu properly when the tablet is connected (in that case, Ubuntu start in low graphics mode). I need to connect it later.

• Lightest weight ubuntu desktop for text editing in big terminal windows?

  I have an older windows laptop onto which I'm installing ubuntu within a VM. My goal is just to use terminal-based linux tools such as vim and shell scripting. I don't give a hoot about any gui for this box. So I first installed ubuntu minimalcd and chose "Basic Ubuntu Server". Upon boot, the text-based terminal came up and I logged in, but the problem is it only gives me 80 columns. I want to do terminal mode vim but have a couple hundred columns to take advantage of my large monitor. If you happen to know how to do that, please see my question here . This post is assuming that the other question is not answerable, and that I will need a desktop to get more than 80 columns in a terminal window. So if that is the case, I want the lightest weight one possible, because this is older hardware and all I want is the ability to have nice big text-based terminal windows for editing text. From the ubuntu minimal CD, I see options for Edubuntu, Kubuntu, etc. Which one of the available desktops would be a good choice for my needs?

• Windows 7 x64 Pro not indexing PDF content ?

  In an attemp to get rid of all the paper clutter that I receive each day, I started scanning and ORCing all my important documents last year. I was using Windows Desktop Search on Vista to index my "Administrative" folder in which I keep all these scanned documents, to be able to quickly retreive them when needed. I upgraded to Windows 7 RTM recently (I got the x64 Pro version, via the MSDN-AA channel of my university). Since then, it seems that the content of the PDFs is not indexed anymore. For example, I have the warranty for my GTX260 graphic card. In the PDF, using Acrobat Reader, I can search for the string "GTX260" and it finds the relevant lines. However, if I perform the same search in the folder containing the PDF, nothing is found. I checked in the indexing options, the folder is supposed to be indexed.

• LPR Printing InputSlot Issues

  I am printing from a Unix system to a Xerox Phaser 4510 (altho I have also had issues printing to a Xerox WorkCentre 7765). I am using LPR and trying to choose the InputSlot The lpoptions show the following options: InputSlot/Paper Tray: Tray1 *Tray2 Tray3 Tray4 ManualFeed Tray6 And here is a sample command that I am using: lpr -P printer -o InputSlot=Tray1 test.pdf.ps Here is the problem: Tray1 = Gives me Tray2 Tray2 = Gives me Tray3 Tray3 = Gives me Tray4 Tray4, ManualFeed, Tray6 = Tray2 (the default tray) If I change the default tray in either LPR, the printer settings, or both. LPR still sends tray2 as the default, where as printing from a windows machine or mac, would use the new default tray. I have also tried Tray0, and several other things, but I have not found a way to get it to print on tray 1. Any Ideas?

• Trouble installing Server 12.10 - Dead keyboard, Blank Screen, Network Config

  Installing 12.10 server from cd - minimal installation: basic system, ssh server,postgreSQL, manual updates. Hardware is brand new HP server that also runs Win 2003 Server Standard as a DNC excellently - I installed the grub boot manager on the primary partition and it is working fine - can boot to Win or Ubuntu without issue. Everything seemed to go OK on the installation - BUT when I restarted the system after install and booted to Ubuntu, I got the command prompt for Ubuntu, but the keyboard was UNREPSONSIVE - dead. There is nothing wrong with the keyboard - works fine if I boot to Win. With a completely unrepsonsive keyboard I had to hit the power switch - when I restarted and booted to Ubuntu, Ubuntu started but no command prompt came up at all - just black screen. I powered down and rebooted to advanced Ubuntu options - it tried to reinstall/initliaze a long list of packages - when it got to 'waiting for network configuration' it waited, then a message 'waiting 60 seconds for network configuration'... it waited 60 seconds and then I got a 'failed to configure network message' and it continued. Finally it finished, I hit enter and got to a prompt - but again, keyboard UNREPSONSIVE - dead. I went through this several times - tried 'repairing broken installation' option and also reinstalling entirely - always same results. I am flummoxed. The only clue I have is that for the Windows DNC config, the IP address is static - not via DHCP. But I don't think that should impact Ubuntu at all - perhaps I am mistaken. What is wrong?

• P2V - Cold Clone ISO

  I need to cold clone a physical box in a VMWare environment. What are people using for this these days? My preference is for VMWare's vConverter ISO, but it appears that this was discontinued. It's no longer available for download on their site from what I can tell (even under old versions). I found one guy who appears to have an ISO for version 3.0.3 of vConverter posted to his site for download, but I'm eternally skeptical about downloading these types of software from random strangers: http://thatcouldbeaproblem.com/?p=584 I also found some mention of using MOA, but I've never used this and have no idea on how effective it is as a vConverter replacement. http://www.sanbarrow.com/moa.html One other options seems to be using Acronis - booting off an Acronis disk to capture a .tib, then using a standard installation of vConverter to push the .tib to ESXi.

  Since the first beta of Analysis Services 2012, I worked with many companies designing and implementing solutions based on Analysis Services Tabular. I am glad that Microsoft published a white paper about a case-study using one of these scenarios: An Analysis Services Case Study: Using Tabular Models in a Large-scale Commercial Solution. Alberto Ferrari is the author of the white paper and many people contributed to it. The final result is a very technical document based on a case study, which provides a level of detail that I don’t see often in other case studies (which are usually more marketing-oriented). This white paper has the following structure: Requirements (data model, capacity planning, client tool) Options considered (SQL Server Columnstore Indexes, SSAS Multidimensional, SSAS Tabular) Data Model optimizations (memory compression, query performance, scalability) Partitioning and Processing strategy for near real-time latency Hardware selection (NUMA analysis, Azure VM tests) Scalability tests (estimation of maximum users per node) If you are in charge of evaluating Tabular as analytical engine, or if you have to design your solution based on Tabular, this white paper is a must read. But if you just want to increase your knowledge of Analysis Services, you will find a lot of useful technical information. That said, my favorite quote of the document is the following one, funny but true: […] After several trials, the clear winner was a video gaming machine that one guy on the team used at home. That computer outperformed any available server, running twice as fast as the server-class machines we had in house. At that point, it was clear that the criteria for choosing the server would have to be expanded a bit, simply because it would have been impossible to convince the boss to build a cluster of gaming machines and trust it to serve our customers.  But, honestly, if a business has the flexibility to buy gaming machines (assuming the machines can handle capacity) – do this. Here is some of DIGTProvider options: add to ${JRE_HOME}/lib/security/java.security this line security.provider.N=com.digt.trusted.jce.provider.DIGTProvider ssl.SocketFactory.provider=com.digt.trusted.jsse.provider.DigtSocketFactory uncomment and edit in conf/server.xml HTTPS section: sslProtocol="GostTLS" (added) edit bin/catalina.sh and add: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}:/opt/cprocsp/lib/ia32" export JAVA_OPTS="${JAVA_OPTS} -Dcom.digt.trusted.jsse.server.certFile=/home//server-gost.cer -Dcom.digt.trusted.jsse.server.keyPasswd=11111111" As I know if I just define in server.xml tomcat's configuration file two SSL connectors, tomcat would not start, because in JRE you can use only one JSSE provider.
