• Mixed surrogate composite key insert in JPA 2.0, PostgreSQL and Hibernate 3.5

  First off, we are using JPA 2.0 and Hibernate 3.5 as persistence provider on a PostgreSQL database. We successfully use the sequence of the database via the JPA 2.0 annotations as an auto-generated value for single-field-surrogate-keys and all works fine. Now we are implementing a bi-temporal database-scheme that requires a mixed key in the following manner: Table 1: id (pk, integer, auto-generated-sequence) validTimeBegin (pk, dateTime) validTimeEnd (dateTime) firstName (varChar) Now we have a problem. You see, if we INSERT a new element, the field id is auto-generated and that's fine. So my question is: Is there a way to tell hibernate via JPA to stop auto-generating the id-field in the case I want to generate a new variety of the same person and go on as usual in every other case or do I have to take over the whole id-generation with custom code? • EF 4, POCO and AddOrUpdate

  I'm trying to create a method on an EF 4 POCO repository called AddOrUpdate. The idea is that the business layer can pass in a POCO object and the persistence framework will add the object if it is new (not yet in the database), else will update the database (once SaveChanges() is called) with the new value. This is similar to some other questions I have asked about EF, but I'm only about 80% there in understanding this so please forgive partial duplication. The part I'm missing is how to update the object graph in my ObjectContext/associated ObjectSet for the passed-in business object once I have determined that the business object indeed already exists in the database (and now has been loaded thanks to TryGetObjectByKey). ApplyCurrentValues sounds sort of like what I want, but it only copies scalar values and doesn't seem intended to update the object graph in the ObjectContext/ObjectSet. • grails run-war connects to mysql but grails run-war doesn't

  Hi, I have a unexpected problem. I had create a war with grails war. Then I had deployed in Tomcat. For my surprise the crud works fine but I don't know what persistence is using. So I did this test: Compare grails prod run-app with grails prod run-war. The first works fine, and does conect with the mysql database. The other don't.   I'm currently seeing the warnings below when trying to run my Google App Engine/Grails test app in Eclipse. • eclipse tomcat debug mode slow - pegs cpu

  Running Tomcat through eclipse works fine in non-debug mode, but not in debug mode. When I try to start the Tomcat server in debug mode, the console output looks fine for a while, but then starts slowing down and eventually just stops, pegging the cpu at 100%. I tried everything I could think of to fix it: cleanesd tomcat working directory restarted eclipse restarted Windows refreshed/cleaned all projects I first had this problem last week using eclipse ganymede. I had been running fine in debug-mode for several months prior to this issue. I didn't make any significant changes to our project that would cause this. Eventually, I upgraded to eclipse galileo which solved my problem. Now 2 days later, I'm having the same problem in galileo. Like I said it works fine in non-debug mode. Any help is much appreciated. I should add that other things work in debug mode - for instance junit tests, so it is something specific to tomcat.

• WF 4.0 can't get to resume workflow on the staging/production environment

  I have developed various registeration workflows using WF4.0. Each work flow has various bookmarks. I am using the registeration wf for an asp.net application. I tested the asp.net application locally and it is working fine( Starting WF, Persisting to db and resuming bookmarks). When I try to test it on the staging server, everything goes messy. • Hibernate: OutOfMemoryError persisting Blob when printing log message

  I have a Hibernate Entity: @Entity class Foo { //... @Lob public byte[] getBytes() { return bytes; } //.... } My VM is configured with a maximum heap size of 512 MB. When I try to persist an object which has a 75 MB large object, I get an OutOfMemoryError. The names of the methods in the stack trace (StringBuilder, ByteArrayBlobType.toLoggableString, pretty.Printer.toString) suggest that hibernate is trying to write a very large log message that contains my object. Am I correct about why hibernate is using so much memory? • grails prod run-app connects to mysql but grails prod run-war doesn't

  Hi, I have a unexpected problem. I had create a war with grails war. Then I had deployed in Tomcat. For my surprise the crud works fine but I don't know what persistence is using. So I did this test: Compare grails prod run-app with grails prod run-war. The first works fine, and does conect with the mysql database. The other don't. • Smoothing touch-based animation in iPhone OpenGL?

  I know this is vague, but looking for general tips/help on this, as it's not an area of significant expertise for me. I have some iPhone code that's basically an EAGL view handling a single touch. The app draws (using GL) a circle via triangle fan at the touch point, and moves it when the user moves the touch point, and re-renders the view then. When dragging a finger slowly, the circle keeps up and consistent with the finger as it moves. If I scribble my finger quickly back and forth across the screen, the rendering doesn't keep up with the touch motion, so you see an optical illusion of "multiple" discrete circles on the screen "at once". (Normal persistence of vision illusion). This optical illusion is jarring. How can I make this look more natural? Can I blur the motion of the circle somehow? Is this result the evidence of some bad frame rate issue? I see this artifact even when nothing else is being rendered, so I think this might just be as fast as we can go. Any hints or suggestions? Much appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi All, I'm building a J2SE application with EJB3 and an Oracle Express Edition DB. My problem is like that - I set an EntityBean in my project which matches a table in the DB. The table contains a column which is not nullable and has a default value. All I want is that when persisting a new data to this table using the EJB, the column's value will get its default value. This is how I set it in the project: //holds user's first name @Basic(optional = true) @Column(name = "FIRST_NAME", insertable = false, updatable = true, nullable = false) private String m_firstName; I also set it in the ORM.XML file: <basic name="firstName"> <column name="FIRST_NAME" insertable="false" updatable="true" nullable="false"/> </basic> But for some reason, when creating a new EntityBean and not setting the first name field, and then trying to persist it, i get the following exception: Exception [TOPLINK-4002] (Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2.1 (Build b60e-fcs (12/23/2008))): oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.DatabaseException Internal Exception: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("TSDB"."USERS"."FIRST_NAME") Which means that the persistence manager tries to insert the first name field although I told it not to. Am I doing something wrong here ? Thanks!

• How can I write a clean Repository without exposing IQueryable to the rest of my application?

  So, I've read all the Q&A's here on SO regarding the subject of whether or not to expose IQueryable to the rest of your project or not (see here, and here), and I've ultimately decided that I don't want to expose IQueryable to anything but my Model. Because IQueryable is tied to certain persistence implementations I don't like the idea of locking myself into this. Similarly, I'm not sure how good I feel about classes further down the call chain modifying the actual query that aren't in the repository. So, does anyone have any suggestions for how to write a clean and concise Repository without doing this? One problem I see, is my Repository will blow up from a ton of methods for various things I need to filter my query off of. Having a bunch of: IEnumerable GetProductsSinceDate(DateTime date); IEnumberable GetProductsByName(string name); IEnumberable GetProductsByID(int ID); If I was allowing IQueryable to be passed around I could easily have a generic repository that looked like: public interface IRepository<T> where T : class { T GetById(int id); IQueryable<T> GetAll(); void InsertOnSubmit(T entity); void DeleteOnSubmit(T entity); void SubmitChanges(); } However, if you aren't using IQueryable then methods like GetAll() aren't really practical since lazy evaluation won't be taking place down the line. I don't want to return 10,000 records only to use 10 of them later. What is the answer here? In Conery's MVC Storefront he created another layer called the "Service" layer which received IQueryable results from the respository and was responsible for applying various filters. Is this what I should do, or something similar? Have my repository return IQueryable but restrict access to it by hiding it behind a bunch of filter classes like GetProductByName, which will return a concrete type like IList or IEnumerable?

  Hi, I am using the sharp architecture so I can easily use mocks etc. in my unit tests and/or during TDD. I have quite complicated business rules and would like to test them at the controller level. I am just wondering how other people do this? For me validation tests business rules at three levels: (1) Property level (e.g. property is required) (2) Intra property level (e.g. start date < end date) (3) Persistence level (e.g. name is unique, parent cannot be child of child) My validation framework also assigns errors to properties. I am just wondering what other people do? Do you write a test for each business rule and check whether the correct error message is assigned to the correct property (i.e. looking at the ASP.MVC ModelState)? I hope my question makes sense. • Workflow Service host not publishing Metadata.

  Still hacking away with extreme persistence at WF services hosted outside of IIS. I'm now having issues with my WF service publishing metadata. Can someone take a look at my code and see what step I'm missing? The few tutorials that I've stumbled across for my scenario make it look so easy, and I know it is. I'm just missing something ridiculously simple. Here's my current trial code: const string serviceUri = "http://localhost:9009/Subscribe"; WorkflowServiceHost host = new WorkflowServiceHost( new Subscribe(), new Uri(serviceUri) ); SubscriberSvcHost.AddDefaultEndpoints( ); SubscriberSvcHost.Open(); Subscribe() is an activity that is coded in an xaml file and contains simple receive and sendreply activities to test out my hosted workflow service. It is NOT a xamlx (WF service) file. Seems like this should be simple enough to work but when I start the application and the service fires I get this message in my browser when navigating to the URI: "Metadata publishing for this service is currently disabled." Shouldn't adding the default endpoints provide enough metadata and description to satisfy the service init and then go into its wait for message state?

• Where should I declare my CDI resources?

  JSR-299 (CDI) introduces the (unfortunately named) concept of a resource: http://docs.jboss.org/weld/reference/1.0.0/en-US/html/resources.html#d0e4373 You can think of a resource in this nomenclature as a bridge between the Java EE 6 brand of dependency injection (@EJB, @Resource, @PersistenceContext and the like) and CDI's brand of dependency injection. The general gist seems to be that somewhere (and this will be the root of my question) you declare what amounts to a bridge class: it contains fields annotated both with Java EE's @EJB or @PersistenceContext or @Resource annotations and with CDI's @Produces annotations. The net effect is that Java EE 6 injects a persistence context, say, where it's called for, and CDI recognizes that injected PersistenceContext as a source for future injections down the line (handled by @Inject). My question is: what is the community's consensus--or is there one--on: what this bridge class should be named where this bridge class should live whether it's best to localize all this stuff into one class or make several of them ...? Left to my own devices, I was thinking of declaring a single class called CDIResources and using that as the One True Place to link Java EE's DI with CDI's DI. Many examples do something similar, but I'm not clear on whether they're "just" examples or whether that's a good way to do it. Thanks.

• Servlet receives null from Remote EJB3 Session Bean

  I'm sure this is a beginner error... So I have a JEE6 application with entities, facades (implementing the persistence layer) and Stateless Session Beans (EJB3) with Remote interfaces (providing access to the entities via facades). This is working fine. Via the SLSB I can retrieve and manipulate entities. Now, I'm trying to do this from a Web Application (deployed on the same Glassfish, entity+interface definitions from JEE app imported as separate jar). I have a Servlet, that receives an instance of the SLSB injected. I get it to retrieve an entity, and the following happens (I can see it in the logs): the remote SLSB gets instantiated, its method called SLSB instantiates the facade, calls the 'get' method facade retrieves object from DB, returns it SLSB returns the object to the caller (all is good until here) calling servlet receives .. null !! What is going wrong? This should work, right? • Setting Path and Expiration for session cookie in asp.net

  Anything I have tried didn't work. Currenly I have following code to change asp.net session cookie expiration date and path, but asp doesn't want to listen to me. I sends same cookie in Set-Cookie header two times sometimes, sometimes it sends it's default cookie ignoring path and expiration date, sometimes it sends everything as expected, and sometimes it doesn't send Set-Cookie at all. What should I do. • One Model to Rule Them All - VS2010 UML, ADO.NET Entity Data Model, and T4

  I worked on a fairly large project a while back where we modeled the classes in Enterprise Architect and generated the (partial) POCO classes (complete with model-driven business rule validations), persistence (NHibernate mapping file) and DDL. Based on certain model attributes we could flag alternate generation strategies or indicate that a particular portion would be entirely hand-coded. There was a good deal of initial investment, but it paid large dividends over the lifetime of a 15 developer, 3 year project. I'm investigating doing something similar with the current Microsoft technology stack. The place I'm stuck is that class modeling is done with the VS 2010 UML tools, but logical data modeling is done with Entity Data Modeler. Is it a reasonable path to use VS 2010 UML as the "single source of truth" and code generate the edmx files based on the class model? That's the inverse of the common path to create the entity model and use a POCO generator to generate classes. However, a good class model can be used to generate much more than just the properties so I tend to view it as a better choice than the entity model.

  Given a Java SE 6 client, I would like to provide a configurable back-end: either directly to a database or through a web service which connects to a centralized DB. To that end, I've created some JPA- and JAXB-annotated entity classes and a DAO interface in a POJO library like the following: public interface MyDaoInterface { public MyEntity doSomething(); } @javax.persistence.Entity @javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement public class MyEntity { private int a; .... } Now, I would like to have my auto-generated web service stubs implement that interface and interact with my defined entity classes, rather than the generated classes provided via the JAX-B unmarshaller. So, the client-side pseudo code would be something like MyDaoInterface dao; if (usingWebservice) dao = new WebserviceDao(); else dao = new JpaDao(); MyEntity e = dao.doSomething(); Is this possible with JPA, JAXB, JAXWS? Is this even advisable? Currently we achieve this through a slow manual process of massaging code, copying generating classes, and doing other things that seem just plain wrong to me.

  I am hoping to make this question and the answers to it the definitive guide to dealing with daylight saving time, in particular for dealing with the actual change overs. Many systems are dependent on keeping accurate time, the problem is with changes to time due to daylight savings - moving the clock forward or backwards. For instance, one has business rules in an order taking system that depend on the time of the order - if the clock changes, the rules might not be as clear. How should the time of the order be persisted? There is of course an endless number of scenarios - this one is simply an illustrative one. How have you dealt with the daylight saving issue? What assumptions are part of your solution? (looking for context here) As important, if not more so: What did you try that did not work? Why did it not work? I would be interested in programming, OS, data persistence and other pertinent aspects of the issue. General answers are great, but I would also like to see details especially if they are only available on one platform.

• How to modernize an enormous legacy database?

  I have a question, just looking for suggestions here. So, my application is 'modernizing' a desktop application by converting it to the web, with an ICEFaces UI and server side written in Java. However, they are keeping around the same Oracle database, which at current count has about 700-900 tables and probably a billion total records in the tables. Some individual tables have 250 million rows, many have over 25 million. Needless to say, the database is not scaling well. As a result, the performance of the application is looking to be abysmal. The architects / decision makers-that-be have all either refused or are unwilling to restructure the persistence. So, basically we are putting a fresh coat of paint on a functional desktop application that currently serves most user needs and does so with relative ease and quick performance. I am having trouble sleeping at night thinking of how poorly this application is going to perform and how difficult it is going to be for everyday users to do their job. So, my question is, what options do I have to mitigate this impending disaster? Is there some type of intermediate layer I can put in between the database and the Java code to speed up performance while at the same time keeping the database structure intact? Caching is obviously an option, but I don't see that as being a cure-all. Is it possible to layer a NoSQL DB in between or something?

  I have a Django app that gets it's data completely from an external source (queried via HTTP). That is, I don't have the option for a local database. Session data is stored in the cache (on my development server I use a SQLite database, so that is no error source). I'm using bleeding edge Django 1.1svn. Enter the problem: I want to use Django's own authentication system for the users. It seems quite simple to write my own Authentication Backend, but always just under the condition that you have a local database where to save the users. Without database my main problem is persistence. • Data Transfer Objects VS Domain/ActiveRecord Entities in the View in RoR

  I'm coming from a .NET background, where it is a practice to not bind domain/entity models directly to the view in not-so-basic CRUD-ish applications where the view does not directly project entity fields as-is. I'm wondering what's the practice in RoR, where the default persistence mechanism is ActiveRecord. I would assert that presentation-related info should not be leaked to the entities, not sure though if this is how real RoR heads would do it. If DTOs/model per view is the approach, how will you do it in Rails? Your thoughts? EDIT: Some examples: - A view shows a list of invoices, with the number of unique items in one column. - A list of credit card accounts, where possibly fraudulent transactions were executed. For that, the UI needs to show this row in red. For both scenarios, The lists don't show all of the fields of the entities, just a few to show in the list (like invoice #, transaction date, name of the account, the amount of the transaction) For the invoice example, The invoice entity doesn't have a field "No. of line items" mapped on it. The database has not been denormalized for perf reasons and it will be computed during query time using aggregate functions. For the credit card accounts example, surely the card transaction entity doesn't have a "Show-in-red" or "IsFraudulent" invariant. Yes it may be a business rule, but for this example, that is a presentation concern, so I would like to keep it out of my domain model.
