• Can empathy be configured to stay updated will a full conversation?

  The Google Talk web app and Android app will always update themselves with all messages sent from all clients and I was wondering if Empathy can be configured to do this. For example, if I start a conversation on my phone and then change to my PC an use the web app, all the messages I sent will show up in the IM window on the PC even though I sent them when I was on my phone. Empathy does not behave this way. It only shows the IMs that occurred when using Empathy. If Empathy cannot do this, is there another client that can?

• Profiling Startup Of VS2012 &ndash; YourKit Profiler

  The YourKit (v7.0.5) profiler is interesting in terms of price (79€ single place license, 409€ + 1 year support and upgrades) and feature set. You do get a performance and memory profiler in one package for which you normally need also to pay extra from the other vendors. As an interesting side note the profiler UI is written in Java because they do also sell Java profilers with the same feature set. To get all methods of a VS startup you need first to configure it to include System* in the profiled methods and you need to configure * to measure wall clock time. By default it does record only CPU times which allows you to optimize CPU hungry operations. But you will never see a Thread.Sleep(10000) in the profiler blocking the UI in this mode. It can profile as all others processes started from within the profiler but it can also profile the next or all started processes. As usual it can profile in sampling and tracing mode. But since it is a memory profiler as well it does by default also record all object allocations > 1MB. With allocation recording enabled VS2012 did crash but without allocation recording there were no problems. The CPU tab contains the time line of the application and when you click in the graph you the call stacks of all threads at this time. This is really a nice feature. When you select a time region you the CPU Usage estimation for this time window. I have seen many applications consuming 100% CPU only because they did create garbage like crazy. For this is the Garbage Collection tab interesting in conjunction with a time range. This view is like the CPU table only that the CPU graph (green) is missing. All relevant information except for GCs/s is already visible in the CPU tab. Very handy to pinpoint excessive GC or CPU bound issues. The Threads tab does show the thread names and their lifetime. This is useful to see thread interactions or which thread is hottest in terms of CPU consumption. On the CPU tab the call tree does exist in a merged and thread specific view. When you click on a method you get below a list of all called methods. There you can sort for methods with a high own time which are worth optimizing. In the Method List you can select which scope you want to see. Back Traces are the methods which did call you. Callees ist the list of methods called directly or indirectly by your method as a flat list. This is not a call stack but still very useful to see which methods were slow so you can see the “root” cause quite quickly without the need to click trough long call stacks. The last view Merged Calles is a call stacked view of the previous view. This does help a lot to understand did call each method at run time. You would get the same view with a debugger for one call invocation but here you get the full statistics (invocation count) as well. Since YourKit is also a memory profiler you can directly see which objects you have on your managed heap and which objects do hold most of your precious memory. You can in in the Object Explorer view also examine the contents of your objects (strings or whatsoever) to get a better understanding which objects where potentially allocating this stuff.   YourKit is a very easy to use combined memory and performance profiler in one product. The unbeatable single license price makes it very attractive to straightly buy it. Although it is a Java UI it is very responsive and the memory consumption is considerably lower compared to dotTrace and ANTS profiler. What I do really like is to start the YourKit ui and then start the processes I want to profile as usual. There is no need to alter your own application code to be able to inject a profiler into your new started processes. For performance and memory profiling you can simply select the process you want to investigate from the list of started processes. That's the way I like to use profilers. • System unable to boot in normal mode..! need to select recovery mode and than Generic Mode to boot.?

  I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS KDE Mode. Couple of Days back I updated the system using Muon Package manager. After Updating, now when ever I boot the system, It get stuck at starting bluetooth Daemon Ok / Stopping Bluetooth Daemon Fail.and after long wait its get start to GUI Mode, but with no mouse detection. So need to reboot by pressing CTL+ALT+DEL and when I select recovery mode - Boot in Generic -- It boot perfectly. How can I set the same as default, and remove the error boot loader script. I am no expert to linux or Kernel.

  About a year or so ago, I decided to start programming. I really, just jumped into a language (Perl) and went from there. What I regret is that I just jumped in: I didn't learn the basics (if you would call them basics). I didn't learn about Computer Science. This issue, I believe, is holding me back. Where should I "restart"? Are there any books, articles, etc. that I should read? Are there any topics an experienced programmer should know? What's your advice? Thanks! • Wired connection stops working suddenly

  I have Ubuntu 12.04.I was downloading something via aria..and then it suddenly stopped..no connection to Internet. I tried to ping the host but no reply..also tried to ping the route 192.168.250.1 but no reply got a message saying 'Ubuntu 12.04 has experienced internal error'. I restarted system but nothing is sorted out. The wired connection 'establishes' but I am not able to use Internet or ping either to host/route/8.8.8.8. The wireless is working fine and it does connect to Internet. I have a static IP address for wired connection and it does connect to Internet on Windows OS installed on this same Laptop with same IP settings.. please suggest how do i get my wired connection start working properly again..

  I want to start develop for Kinect, but hardest theme for it - how to send keyboard and mouse input to any application. In previous question I got an advice to develop my own driver for this devices, but this will take a while. I imagine application like a gate, that can translate SendMessage's into system wide input or driver application with API to send this inputs. So I wonder, is there are drivers or simulators that can interact with C# or C++? Small edition: SendMessage, PostMessage, keybd_event will work only on Windows application with common messages loop. So I need driver application that will work on low, kernel, level.

• GPU On-the-fly encoding of video through Logitech HD Webcam C510

  Originally asked here but I edited that to move this question as a different one on suggestion by a fellow member. I read that I should have a Core2Duo 2.2Ghz for 720p but I have a 2.0Ghz one, would it be possible for me to first record it and then encode it after recording if my processor really start giving issue when doing on-the-fly encoding? I also have a ATI HD 4850 512MB card, if it can help in encoding on-the-fly or is there a chance that my graphics card alone can handle it and those specs were just for a system without a graphics card? I believe so. Also, I got no worries in dealing with console, if I have to do some of the things above in terminal. Other possible significant details: I have a dual screen setup 29" (1360X768) & 22" (1680X1050) which might be using some good power from GPU and I have 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM.

• No boot loader found - dual booting Windows 8 with Ubuntu 14.04

  I have been trying in vain to dual boot my computer with Windows 8 Pro (pre-installed) and Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit. I have been able to successfully install Ubuntu 14.04, but the option to start Ubuntu does not appear on startup. This is after having taken all steps as mentioned in Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported). I even tried the boot repair option and ended up with this error log. My questions are: How do I solve for No boot loaders found in /dev/...? Are there any other recommendations that will help me solve this? Other points that may be important: Booting into Ubuntu from a live USB shows all Ubuntu partitions on the hard drive.

  I have installed the JWM on Ubuntu 12.04 via the Software Centre, but it doesn't work. When I choose the JWM session from LightDM, it only shows a black screen. It worked when I had another computer with Ubuntu 11.10, where I had the same problem after the JWM installation. But once, by chance, I chose to start JWM from a Fluxbox session. And after that, i was able to start JWM also from LightDM. But this solution does not work for me on Ubuntu 12.04. JWM never starts.

• Dreamweaver 8 Not Starting on Ubuntu 10.04

  I've been trying to start Dreamweaver 8 in Wine with winetricks installed in Ubuntu 10.04LTS and it would simply show that it was loading and then stop, so I decided to try in the terminal to see what I would get and I recieve. wine Dreamweaver.exe err:module:attach_process_dlls "odbc32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\Macromedia\\Dreamweaver 8\\Dreamweaver.exe" failed, status c0000005 doxramos@doxramos-laptop:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver 8$ odbc32.dll is installed within the libraries and is in my System32 Folder inside of Wine. Does anyone know what could cause this issue? Thanks in advance.

• No graphics after installing AMD Catalyst 12.4 and installing the recommended updates afterwards

  Some days ago, I installed Ubuntu 12.04. Since I wanted to use dualview using an external display I installed the propriatary AMD Catalyst 12.4. The graphics are fine, but if I run the updates found by the updates manager, Ubuntu won't be able to start with graphics after reboot. I installed Ubuntu 3 times until I realized what the problem was. So now I got the basic installation with Catalyst running but I can't update the system. Is there any solution to this? Or can I somehow identify which update causes this? My System is a Lenovo y560 Ideapad (Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, with AMD Radeon HD 6570M/5700 Series. Thank you in advance

• Page Load Time - "Waiting on..." taking ages. What part of page request process is hung?

  I have a new cluster site running on Magento that's on a development server that is made up of 2 x web servers and 1 x database server. I have optimized the site in all areas I know (gzip, increasing php memory limits, increasing database memory limits etc) but sometimes the page loading gets stuck on 'waiting for xxx.xx.xx.xxx' (Chrome and other broswers, chrome just shows it that way). It can sit there for 40 + seconds, sometimes it just never loads and I close it in frustration. What part of the page loading process is this hung at? Is it a server issue, database issue, platform issue? I need to know where to start or whether to push the hosting provider about it.

• How to make xlock use the first key I hit as a part of my password

  I just switched from Arch Linux to Ubuntu 10.10. I'm running the Fluxbox window manager, and I use xlockmore to lock my screen with the following key shortcut: 192 :Exec xlock-mode marquee +usefirst -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." The problem I'm having is that xlock is definitely not using my first key as part of my password. Instead, it uses some randomized fade pattern to fade to the password screen. I find this highly annoying, as when I get back to my desk and start entering my password it doesn't register password characters until the fade pattern is complete. I've also tried the following modifications with no difference: 192 :Exec xlock -mode marquee -usefirst -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." 192 :Exec xlock -mode marquee -icongeometry 240x240 -message "back in a minute..." The first example worked flawlessly on Arch. Does Ubuntu have some sort of system default that you can't override on the command-line?

• Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

• My ubuntuone is broken, what is the problem?

  I am on 10.10 and u1sdtool seems to be completely broken. I reinstalled it, no change. I can add my PC to the account, but it is added twice(!) every time I tried. So I have my netbook and two times my PC in the account. The netbook with 10.04 has no problems. Below is the error msg I get when attempting to startup Ubuntu One on the command line. desktop:~$ u1sdtool --status Oops, an error ocurred: Traceback (most recent call last): Failure: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. desktop:~$ Starting it from the Me Menu has the same effect, the HDD will get really busy for a minute and then nothing happens, the client will not start. Nothing in the syslog or anywhere.

  In your experience, does TDD prove to be a useful approach in all development projects? Do you take the approach of TDD even when working on an existing project? Also, how does mocking tie in with a TDD discipline? I'm not looking for opinions, I'm looking for developers' advice, tips and learning resources regarding TDD's usage based on their experience. I'm going to spend the day equipping myself with enough knowledge about TDD to start making small steps towards using it but I don't know to what extent I should be using it.

• Do backend developers care what their code looks like in the frontend?

  As a backend and a frontend developer I see the process from start to finish, first by creating the logic, displaying the correct data on a web page and then using frontend skills to make this look awesome. My question is, do pure backend developers care what their code ends up looking like in the frontend? As far as the user is concerned, they will ONLY see design/frontend. They don't actually care that your code is clean, DRY and maintainable. As long as it doesn't disrupt their payment process or flight booking they do not care. Does this affect the average backend developer?
