  • Sony VGN-NR260E "External Device Boot"

    [A LITTLE BACKGROUND] On all modern Dell computers pushing the F12 on bios boot will allow for a screen that lets you choose what boot option you need. For example if I want to boot off of a USB flash drive to boot into a live Linux distribution in order to clean virus's on netbooks that do not have CD drives to boot from I would push F12 and choose USB device from the list of options. If this does not show up then I can always go to the F2 bios setup and choose flash drive to be the first option. When I restart the computer it will boot into the flash device. I understand that I can purchase an external USB CD drive and then boot from that. I do not want to use that option. The reason for using a flash device instead of a CD is: A: This USB flash device has several different boot OS's on it that are used. B: The antivirus disks are updated often and burning cd's and throwing away others is wasteful compared to simply updating a flash drive. There is nothing wrong with the flash drive. It works perfect on many other PC's. [PROBLEM] Booting this flashdrive has been working for years on hundreds of computers... I just have this ONE computer that I cannot figure out how to get it to boot on... I have a Sony Vaio that will not boot to this device. I've tried pushing every key combo I can think of (F12, Esc, Del, F10...) and none of these key combinations will bring up the boot menu. I chose F2 and went into the bios and changed the first boot device to USB flash device. This did not work either. There is an astrix next to the device and the note states: "This Drive is available when External Device Boot is Enable." [WHAT I NEED] I need to know How to enable External Device Boot on the Sony Vaio VGN-NR260E laptop. OR How to bring up the Boot Menu to allow me to boot off a flash device.   • How to fix grub after moving root partition?

    Hi, Because I am using one of the new WD disks I am trying to aling my root partition with the real sectors, as described here: http://community.wdc.com/t5/Desktop/Problem-with-WD-Advanced-Format-drive-in-LINUX-WD15EARS/m-p/10920#M631 So I copied all files to a temp location, deleted my partition (/dev/sda3), recreated it a few cylinders later (same name) and copied the files to the newly created partition. But now when I try to boot, I get my old grub menu but after selecting my kernel version it hangs... Any idea how I can fix it?

    Can you burn a DVD film that will play on a standard DVD player but also include on the disk some pc readable files that would auto launch on a PC? I want to create a dvd disk that essentailly has 2 purposes: When a DVD is inserted into a standard DVD player it plays like a normal DVD film, i.e. you get the DVD menu and you can play the movie When you insert the dvd into a pc it auto launches an exe file and behaves like a normal data disk.

  • iPhoto printing PDFs sideways

    When I print to PDF from iPhoto (7.1.5), my scans (which are all portrait) all end up sideways in the PDF file. I've searched high and low for some setting that will alter this. The only one that I could find that would plausibly affect this is the Layout menu item in the Print customisation view, but this has no effect. Even rotating the images doesn't change it. Why is iPhoto printing my PDFs sideways, and how do I get it to stop?

  • Missing Libraries in Windows 7

    My friends Windows 7 x64 system is not displaying the sub-folders of libraries tab in windows explorer pane. See below: Whenever he or I click on the arrow next to the tab it opens nothing and clicking on the folder show what you see above. However if I click on the documents tab from the start menu, it brings up the documents folder. The Libraries tab on the left pane doesn't work though from that either. Any ideas?

  • Custom keyboard map is causing issues with stuck keys

When I hit Control_R and Mode_switch at the same time (happens a lot by accident), the Mode_switch key gets into a 'stuck' state, all letters I type afterwards come out in their umlaut form as if Mode_switch is pressed. I can unstuck the Mode_switch by again hitting Control_R and Mode_switch at the same time, but that leaves Gnome in a broken state where it doesn't react to my Gnome keyboard shortcuts any longer. The key presses themselves are still registered by the window manager as one can see changes in the applications (cursor in Gnome Terminal will turn into an unfilled rect, as if the application lost focus), but don't trigger the bound action. Does anybody have a clue what could be causing this? Or does anybody has an idea how I could debug this? xev doesn't seem to help here, as it is reporting normal KeyPress/KeyRelease events, even when the key is stuck. Also the Gnome key bindings don't get reported at all when its in the 'broken' state. I assume they are captured by the window manager before they even reach xev. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome and Metacity, I have disabled all OpenGL related effects, so Compiz shouldn't interfere. Some general info on which applications are involved in Gnomes key binding handling would be helpful as well, as I assume its metacity, but restarting metacity doesn't fix the issue.

I'm not a sysadmin, but I got this task assigned :( I've tried this solution mount -t smbfs -o username=samba,password=samba //Desktop/Public /mnt/public But the output is: mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs' How can I mount a windows share into RHEL 5? FWIW I've successfully created a link with the menu: Places>Connect to Server>Service Type:Windows Share Which creates a link in the desktop, but I would need to programatically save files in that machine, hence I need it mounted as filesystem.   • Can't open cocoa emacs from terminal using open -a

    I installed emacs on my macbook air running os x 10.6.5 from this site http://emacsformacosx.com/. I believe this is what used to be called cocoa emacs. I dragged it into my Application folder and it works fine when i run it from there. I want to be able to run it from terminal. After some googling, i tried open -a /Application/Emacs.app foo.txt (foo.txt was and existing file). I got two emacs windows - one with welcome screen and one with foo.txt loaded. I tried a few applications in the /Applications directory and they did not seem to behave like this. I had installed it using my own account (an admin account) so after doing ls -l on /Application I noticed that the owner and group were different from the other entries in this folder. I recursively changed the owner and group to root and wheel, like the others, but this did not help. The only thing that looks funny now is that there that ls -l show a @ character which has something to do with extended attributes but i don't know how to check these. Any suggestions on what to check next? Is using the open command the only to run the program? Can I simulate what it does using a shell script?

  • Execute remote shell commands on windows XP embedded

    The following situation: We have Windows XP Embedded clients that have all admin shares disabled and only have read-only shares (for security reasons). What we want to do is run remote shell (dos) commands on these machines. At first we looked at PsExec & BeyondExec applications (and all sorts of variants), but all of them rely on having at least an admin$ share, which are disabled on our systems. Telnet is not secure enough, as is RSHD servers. So we looked at the next obvious solution: and SSH server. We also prefer an open-source or freeware solution that is still maintained. I looked at freeSSH server for Windows, but that didn't run stable, I tried installing copSSH, WinSSH & openSSH for Windows, but none of these applications seem to work on Windows XP Embedded. The services can either not be installed or cannot be started. I don't know why. Some kind of dependency that is missing. So are there any other solutions out there? I don't care about having to an agent installation locally of some kind on each system, as long as the size of the software is small enough. Can someone suggest some alternatives to what I've already mentioned? Thank you very much.

  • Firefox window disappears

    Now this is odd. At some point in the last half hour, my Firefox window disappeared. I didn't notice, as I was working in another program at the time. No Firefox icon shows up with Alt-Tab, and no Firefox listing shows up under the Applications tab in the task manager. There is a Firefox entry under the Processes tab. Normally, I probably wouldn't have noticed, just opened Firefox up again, but I'm listening to an Internet radio station and the stream never stopped. When I did open a new Firefox window, it showed up in the Task Manager's applications tab. I'm running Windows XP, and my Firefox has the add-ons Adblock Plus, BetterPrivacy, Cert Viewer Plus, DOM Inspector, Firebug, Greasemonkey, Java Quick Starter, Live HTTP headers, Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant, NoScript, WebDeveloper and XPather. The radio station is Slacker; it's never given me any trouble before, and I've been using it for months. I don't think there was anything unusual in my open tabs; just a few static pages at non-sketchy sites like Java APIs, plus GMail and the aforementioned Slacker. Googling brought up a handful of similar-but-not-quite-the-same errors, none of which had useful resolutions. Does anyone know how to bring that window back and/or prevent this from happening again?

  • Changing file browser in Scientific Linux

    I use Scientific Linux Release 6.1 (Carbon) with GNOME 2.28.2. When I double-click on a folder on the Desktop it is opened in "File Browser". When I open a folder via "Places" on the Main Menu Bar, the folder is opened in "File Manager". I dislike "File Manager" and I don't understand why there are two different programs (file managers) running depending on how I open a folder. How can I get rid of "File Manager"?

I can only fine 1, the OpenJDK : $ which java /usr/bin/java $ java -version java version "1.6.0_0" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_0-b11) OpenJDK Server VM (build 1.6.0_0-b11, mixed mode) How can I find the others?   • Multiheaded X.org with a single workspace-pool

    I've got an idea for x.org/$randomwindowmanager in combination with a multiheaded setup, but I haven't figured out how it should work. Also I don't really know where to place the feature request. Now for the idea. I've been working with screen (wikipedia:GNU_Screen) for some years now. One thing I like about it, is the fact that I can get a multi-display mode (screen -x), so you can have multiple terminals all connected to the same screen. The fun thing about it, is that you can get 2 terminals with the same content and switch my onscreen layout, without moving the terminals. I admit, in screen it's not extremely useful, but I think for a wm it can be. Imagine this. You've got two monitors and 4 workdesks. On one workdesk I've got my IDE with code, on the second one I've got the output, on the third one I've got the documentation and on the forth one I've got my e-mail and IM clients. At one moment, I want my IDE and output on my monitors, another moment my code and documentation and Yet another moment my IM to consult a colleague and documentation or code. Finally my colleague comes to help me at my desk. I'd like it if we could both watch the same workdesk without him sitting on my lap, so I turn one monitor so he can see it better. It would be great if we could see the same thing that's on my monitor (exclude mousepointer). The thing with most WMs is that your workspaces on the two monitors are either separated or glued together. If they're separated, you can change workspaces on each monitor autonomous, but you can't exchange applications between monitors because they're different x-clients (iirc). If they're glued together (xinerama), you can exchange the applications, but when changing your workspace, the other monitors change too. So, what I'd like to know is this. Is this already possible or should I submit a feature request somewhere (and if so, where?)

  • Sync desktop Mac environment to laptop

    I spend the majority of my time working at my desktop Mac, which I have configured for my web development environment. My spouse has a MacBook for casual use, and I occasionally steal it back when I need to work off-site, or when travelling. The question is how to best synchronize the two so I can switch between them more readily. I've solved a few obvious things by using online services: Email is hosted on IMAP. Working files are in Dropbox. Source code is managed in git. However, the following are things I always miss when jumping on the laptop: Installed Applications (current versions) Installed libraries & utilities (/usr/local) Apache VirtualHosts & other configurations (/etc) Disk image files for VMs My current method is to connect the MacBook via Firewire target mode and rsync the /Users/me home directory, and then cherry-pick the other items I need from Applications, /etc and /usr/local. The problem with this method is that it can be very time consuming due to things like my virtual machine image files, cached emails, etc. How can I make this faster & easier? Can you recommend a solution for configuration management (so I can repeatably install & configure the same software on both), or synchronization (so I can bring the MacBook up to date nightly, over our home network)?

  • SharePoint Web Analytics not tracking usage for main application

    My SP 2010 setup is two separate applications - one for the main portal and one for MySite. Whilst WebAnalytics is tracking usage of MySite it's not showing any stats for the main Portal. The only thing it lists is the number of site collections but no page views etc. The WA service is clearly running to pick up data for MySite. In Configure web analytics and health data collection everything is ticked. I can't find any obvious settings that are different between the two applications. Where should I look to get usage tracking correctly? Edit: Having played with the date ranges I see that actually I've got no stats in the last 7 days for any site at all including MySite which has been working at some point previously. Edit: What does each service (WA Data Processing Service vs WA Web Services) do and where should they be active? At present they're both running on an App server but not on the WFEs (although they were running on WFEs previously). From what I can gather than only need to run on an App server but I find it strange that the only logged activity I see in the staging database relates to Central Admin URLs on the App server and nothing from the WFEs.

  • Running programs by typing some alias in Windows

    Is there an easy way in windows to set a given string, like "sidb" to run a program or open a given folder in Windows? My original idea was to be able to run commands like that in the "Execute" start button menu (or Win + R),so I'd just have to do WIN+R and type "sidb". What is the best way to accomplish this? EDIT: May I rephrase this as : Is there a way to define for example, in systems variables, sibd="C:.......blabla\ and then I'd just have to type "sibd" in Run?

  • Making it Easier for Older Users to Login to Multiple Accounts

    I currently do consulting for a small business that has multiple applications that they need to login too. I'm trying to get them to start using Basecamp and Zendesk to make all of our lives easier when it comes to collaboration on big projects and quick helpdesk ticket items. However, I have recently been informed that it is difficult for them to remember all of these websites etc... to login too. However the login information is the same. Right now they have to login to: Windows Login Gmail I want them additionally to login to Basecamp Zendesk This is just a generation or two gap between myself and them, so I'm wondering what others do to solve these problems. Is there some way we could configure USB thumbdrives that somehow have Lastpass or something on that when plugged into the computer automatically log them into their Windows account, then when they were to say visit the Basecamp account would automatically log them into that? I think the security risk (of a list thumbdrive) is well worth the ability to use these extra applications. Unless anyone else has any other ways for making it easier for users to login to multiple sites.

  • Linux: prevent outgoing TCP flood

    I run several hundred webservers behind loadbalancers, hosting many different sites with a plethora of applications (of which I have no control). About once every month, one of the sites gets hacked and a flood script is uploaded to attack some bank or political institution. In the past, these were always UDP floods which were effectively resolved by blocking outgoing UDP traffic on the individual webserver. Yesterday they started flooding a large US bank from our servers using many TCP connections to port 80. As these type of connections are perfectly valid for our applications, just blocking them is not an acceptable solution. I am considering the following alternatives. Which one would you recommend? Have you implemented these, and how? Limit on the webserver (iptables) outgoing TCP packets with source port != 80 Same but with queueing (tc) Rate limit outgoing traffic per user per server. Quite an administrative burden, as there are potentially 1000's of different users per application server. Maybe this: how can I limit per user bandwidth? Anything else? Naturally, I'm also looking into ways to minimize the chance of hackers getting into one of our hosted sites, but as that mechanism will never be 100% waterproof, I want to severely limit the impact of an intrusion.
