• Need solutions in sharing a 3Mb/768Kbps DSL line to 60+ users and faster bandwidth

  Two parts. Part 1: We currently have 2 DSL Lines with 3Mb/768Kbps speeds load balanced for 60+ users. Accessing the Internet is borderline unusable. The simple solution would be to get a faster DSL Line but the highest DSL package is 6Mb/768Kbps, has quite the price jump, and doesn't do anything to help with upload speeds. I'm looking for free or extremely low cost solutions (web cache, traffic shaping, bandwidth controls, etc) to help with making Internet access more bearable until the next funding year. Can anyone give any advice? Part 2: We're looking into a 4.5Mb bonded T1 in the next funding year which is of course significantly more expensive than 2 DSL lines. Are bonded T1s our only hope for faster speeds? Are there any better alternatives?

  Problem Normally I try to have my continuous integration as most a possible toolset free to ensure that no local stuff could have an impact to my build. My Silverlight app references a special compile target in a folder outside my developer tree: <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So I copied the stuff from this folder to a local one and changed the call to this target in my csproj: <Import Project="..\..\..\tools\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> And now Visual Studio Conversion Wizard welcomes my with this: Solution Regardless of which line I write – this conversion comes back again and again, if the line has another form than <Import Project="$(MSBuildExtensionsPath32)\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" /> So it seems that there is no simple way to change this behaviour. Workaraound I must accept, that this line must be in the csproj and to run the build the toolset must be copied to the build server at the correct location. So go to your development machine where Visual Studio is installed and copy the folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications” to your build server at the equivalent location.   Xmas wishes to Microsoft: Please provide technologies to let us developers bundle all needed stuff for a project in one developer tree. It should be possible that one checkout starts us up! No additional installations regardless whether it is a developing machine or dedicated build or continuous integration server.   I currently have a website and blog and using a limited web hosting plan. When I upload images on my hosting server it consumes a lot of bandwidth and space. So I was thinking of hosting images on some-other image hosting site and direct linking it to my site. I found out few sites like imageshack, photobucket, tinypic, imgur. However, I see all have certain restrictions. The features i am looking for are as follows: 1. At least 10gb space 2. At least 500gb bandwidth (bec I hav very high traffic) 3. Very high speed even during heavy load like 1000 visitors accessing every hour. 4. Ultra reliable servers (99.9% uptime) 5. Privacy control 6. Must not ever delete image if inactive 7. • How can I make Excel correlate data from two data sets into a single graph?

  I have two datasets, one being sparser than the other. They look like this: Data Set 1: 4 50 5 55 6 60 7 70 8 80 Data Set 2: 4 10 6 20 8 30 I have several hundred points instead of this few. I want them in the same graph, the X axis being 4-8, the y axis being 0-100ish, and two lines, one for each data set. What I get is two lines, not correlated at all along the X axis, and the X axis being labeled from one of the two datasets, with the labels being wrong for the other. The smaller data set is one-point-per-tick on the x axis, when I need it to skip ticks and actually line up with the other data set. Not married to excel, willing to try this in something else if it's free.

• Need Help Hiring a Perfectionist Programmer [closed]

  I understand my question may be in the gray area, but I'm not able to use the Meta to ask if this question is appropriate or not so I'll simply have to risk it. My project is complete in the sense that it's a fully functional, ready to go 1.0 version. However, that's not good enough for my standards. My expertise is in HTML/CSS, not jQuery and PHP. I'm looking for someone to refine every character of my code for quality, speed, security and compatibility. I want everything to be as bug free as possible for launch. So I need an expert programmer who's a perfectionist in their coding who cares about the quality of their work (not just making it work) to review and refine my code. I'm sure I can't outright post the project's details and hope for interested parties to contact me as that wouldn't be beneficial to the community so instead I'm looking for advice from programmers about where some of best places to hire quality programmers are and the best strategies to hire the right programmer. In other words, screening applicants off of craigslist isn't going to cut it for this project. Thanks

• Video codec that can be read on clean installs of either Windows, OS X and Ubuntu

  I have to make a video that will need to be watched on different operating systems. Is there a "universal" video codec that can be played on Windows, OS X and Linux without requiring additional plugins or player other than those that comes on a default clean install of each of those systems? Compression is not an issue, I'm merely looking for compatibility (e.g. for audio, I would use WAV as a universal codec). Note : I must assume that the video will be distributed in countries where software patents are enforced, and therefore can't rely on the user to install non-free codecs on Linux. Thanks.

• How did Google get on my Mac?

  Am running a MacBook Pro, and have never installed Chrome, Google Earth, or anything blatantly Google. Just installed Little Snitch (are there no good free firewalls for Mac?) and see that CURL is sending to Google every few minutes, as is a request to Google update and more. Little Snitch doesn't say what program setup these requests. So, how do I find out how G got on my machine, why is it sending so many requests (every minute or so) and how do I remove it (and is it there for reasons other than to help G spy on me)?

• How to bring application to front every 15 minutes on Mac OS X Lion?

  I have a free or cheap little app called Desktop Task Timer LE that I've been using to track my time as I work on various projects. I'd like to have it pop up as the foreground app every 15 minutes to prevent me from forgetting to stop/change the timer after I've moved on to a different task. I know I can have the app launch using a script in Automator or AppleScript, but I don't know how to have that script fire off every 15 minutes. I've read about using Launchd and iCal, but I'm still not sure how to do it. (Actually, iCal is probably simple, but I'd like to avoid using it for this.) Any ideas? Also, a further feature would be to have it pop up after 5 (or x) minutes of inactivity on the computer. Not sure if this would work for my needs, but I'd like to test it if possible.

• Is there a (family of) monotonically non-decreasing noise function(s)?

  I'd like a function to animate an object moving from point A to point B over time, such that it reaches B at some fixed time, but its position at any time is randomly perturbed in a continuous fashion, but never goes backwards. The objects move along straight lines, so I only need one dimension. Mathematically, that means I'm looking for some continuous f(x), x ? [0,1], such that: f(0) = 0 f(1) = 1 x < y ? f(x) = f(y) At "most" points f(x + d) - f(x) bears no obvious relation to d. (The function is not uniformly increasing or otherwise predictable; I think that's also equivalent to saying no degree of derivative is a constant.) Ideally, I would actually like some way to have a family of these functions, providing some seed state. I'd need at least 4 bits of seed (16 possible functions), for my current use, but since that's not much feel free to provide even more. To avoid various issues with accumulation errors, I'd prefer the function not require any kind of internal state. That is, I want it to be a real function, not a programming "function".

• how do you uninstall an xampp installation that refuses to uninstall?

  I downloaded xampp 1.7.3 (32) on windows 7 (64) in the programs(86) folder. both MySql and Apache refuse to run, they start and then instantly turn of. All ports are free. So I decide to uninstall however, when i run the uninstaller I receive the following error "Input Error: Can not find script file "C:\Program Files (x86)\xampp\uninst.temp\xampp_uninstall.vbs" XAMPP uninstall not OK Why is there spaces in the above line and does this matter "C:\Program Files (x86)" ? Can somebody please help me to understand the problem & uninstall xampp (or get it to work). It does not show in the control panel so I am stuck. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• How To Figure Out Your PC’s Host Name From the Command Prompt

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel. • How do I fix "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode?"

  First off, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a 30gb partition, the rest of my hdd is for a vista partition. The way I installed this was, I shrunk the vista partition and installed Ubuntu in the largest block of free space. Ubuntu has been working fine for a few weeks, and I've loved it, but today I was doing something in Vista (something simple) and I restarted to go back into ubuntu, and when it tried to boot up I got a message that said: "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input devices could not be detected correctly. You will have to configure these yourself." I click OK, and it gives me a few options but all of them are dead ends. Basically, I'm stuck in CLI right now without a clue of how to fix it. I've tried doing a full update and it hasn't made a difference. I've already been asking for help in #Ubuntu and #Radeon and I was directed by some of them here, so I hope I can find some answers here. Also, I'm using an ATI Radeon X1200. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Another thing, while I was trying to get help in #radeon I was told that it could possibly be this bug.

• Get Func-y v2.0

  In my last post I talked about using funcs in C# to do async calls in WinForms to free up the main thread for the UI. In that post I demonstrated calling a method and then waiting until the value came back. Today I want to talk about calling a method and then continuing on and handling the results of the async call in a callback.The difference is that in the previous example although the UI would not lock up the user couldn't really do anything while the other thread was working because it was waiting for it to finish. This time I want to allow the user to continue to do other stuff while waiting for the thread to finish.Like before I have a service call I want to make that takes a long time to finish defined in a method called MyServiceCall. We need to define a callback method takes an IAsyncResult parameter.public ServiceCallResult MyServiceCall(int param1)...public int MyCallbackMethod(IAsyncResult ar)...We start the same way by defining a delegate to the service call method using a Func. We need to pass an AsyncCallback object into the BeginInvoke method. This will tell it to call our callback method when MyServiceCall finishes. The second parameter to BeginInvoke is the Func delegate. This will give us access to it in our callback.Func<int, ServiceCallResult> f = MyServiceCall;AsyncCallback callback =   new AsyncCallback(MyCallbackMethod);IAsyncResult async = f.BeginInvoke(23, callback, f); Now let's expand the callback method. The IAsyncResult parameter contains the Func delegate in its AsyncState property. We call EndInvoke on that Func to get the return value.public int MyCallbackMethod(IAsyncResult ar){    Func<int, ServiceCallResult> delegate =        (Func<int, ServiceCallResult>)ar.AsyncState;    ServiceCallResult result = delegate.EndInvoke(ar);}There you have it. • Keyboard Pressing Application

  Imagine that problem. When you play some games, sometimes happens situations like "press quickly the X key to escape from ropes" or "press quickly the X key to fill the rage gauge", etc. Of course, that kind of game destroy keyboards, joysticks, mouses, etc. I would like to know about programs (preferentially free) that, by example, will press the 'x' key in intervals of, by example, 300ms. Remember that the built in Windows "keyboard repeat rate" doesn't works for games. When you press (and hold) somekey in the game, the key is not repeated as in default Windows Applications. Thanks!

• Recommend a Rackspace Cloud Server API Language Binding?

  Rackspace publishes only a hard-to-use HTTP and JSON/XML based "API" (they call it an API but it's really a non-standard Web Service without a WSDL). There are dozens of open-source language bindings to choose from. I have tried three of them so far and they're all horrible (incomplete, buggy, and/or undocumented). Can anybody recommend a language binding which is reasonably complete, well documented, and bug-free? I can use Perl, Python, PHP, or Java. My ultimate objective is to create a script/program that will provision a server, launch a process inside it, wait for the process to finish, copy the results to the local server, and destroy the remote server. What's the best choice for that? Thanks

• Should I sell video tutorials on my own or via publishers like lynda.com? [closed]

  I am asking this because I am deciding between two models right now. One way is to create video tutorials on my own (make some short free videos and long pay per download/stream videos) or sell them to lynda.com or tutsplus. The 2nd way is easier, because they will do all the boring business stuff, will host the files to download etc. In that case, everything I need is a good microphone and obey their guidelines. On the other side if I do it on my own, I have to do all the unwanted business stuff, pay the server and other stuff. This is quite a big downside, however, I will have all the videos under my control in the future. I know that lynda.com has bigger attention and marketing that I am capable, but if you take e.g. phpvideotutrials.com (r.i.p ;), I think Leigh was very successful with relatively small budget. The interesting question will be the cost or how much will they pay me. Would it be less than if I sell it myself+monthly server hosting+other expenses? Any advice from people who actively sell their videos to some companies or do it on they own is highly appreciated.

• How to get a list of all software that starts automatically when Windows 7 starts?

  I know that under Windows there are multiple ways to get an app to autostart but I can never remember what all of those ways are. Is there a single unified way to bring up a list of all programs which are set to run themselves at startup and let me disable those I don't want? I'd prefer something built into Windows. I have Windows 7 Starter. But a free / open source / shareware tool would also be acceptable. (This time the software I want to prevent from autostarting is: MSN Messenger, Y! Messenger, and Vodaphone Mobile Broadband, which starts whether the dongle is inserted or not. None of these three are in Windows's "Startup" folder.)

• Add an entry for Ubuntu on Windows 8 boot loader

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 by creating free space in Windows 8 and then using that space to create 3 partitions, one for SWAP, one for GRUB (mounting point is /boot) and one for the actual OS. I did this so the Windows 8 boot loader wouldn't be overwritten in case I ever wanted to remove Ubuntu. I can still boot into Ubuntu if I select the boot loader from the BIOS. I want to add Ubuntu to the Windows 8 boot loader and I've been told to use EasyBCD. The issue with that is it doesn't actually direct Windows to the GRUB file, but rather to something like autogrub0.mri. I have found another programme called Visual BCD which will allow me to actually set the bootloader paths and drives. From here, I don't quite know what to do. I believe I have it set to the correct drive but I don't know if I'm directing to the right file. I think it's /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/grub.efi. I don't know if that's the right file, if I need to remove /boot or if the / need to be \ as that's what Windows uses. Sorry for such a lengthy post, please help!

• Automating the Backup of a SQL Server 2008 Express Database

  Steps Involved: 1) Create a Database Backup Script. 2) Create a Scheduled Task To Run the Backup Script. 1 Create a Database Backup Script. a) Download and install SQL Server Management Studio. This is a free tool available on the Microsoft website. b) Once Management Studio is installed launch it and connect to the SQL server instance that contains the database that you want to back up. c) Right click on the database and then in the menu choose Tasks -> Back up... d) This will open up a window where you can choose your backup options, once you are happy with the options click on the "Script" button near the top and select the "Script Action to File" option. e) Save the File. 2 Create a Schedule Task to Run the Backup Script a) Open up Windows Task Scheduler. b) Create a new Task using the wizard, when asked to select a program browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\binn\SQLCMD.exe c) There are 2 arguments that need to be set: -S \SERVER_INSTANCE_NAME  -i "PATH_OF_SQLBACKUP_SCRIPT" where SERVER_INSTANCE_NAME  is the name of the instance of SQL server that contains your database e.g. (local) and PATH_OF_SQLBACKUP_SCRIPT is the path of your backup script e.g. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\DatastoreBackup.sql" d) Adjust the task to run at the desired times and you are done.

• Restoring backup with Deja Dup from external HD

  So, here's the problem that I have with restoring. First, I backed up like everything. So I had place on the external HD for only one copy. I had to reinstall everything, but I didn't worry because I had a backup. But now, restoring doesn't work and it starts to be annoying. So, I right click "Restore missing files...". Then I have the popup window from Deja Dup asking where is the backup. So, I select the external HD and either put nothing in "folder" or just put ".". Thinking that it should be the base to look for backups. In both cases, after a while scanning, I get: The Volume "Filesystem root" has only 139.7mb disk space remaining. But my partition "/home" has 799.6Gb free. Also, I just want to restore some files, I don't need all of them. On my external HD, there's a file called: duplicity-full.20120514T220834Z.manifest. A text file. In it, I can see that everything is partitions in files of 52mb. So, small files are in one archive while very large files are split in multiple one. But I can see the exact list of file that I have. So, I'm guessing that my backup is intact. What am I doing wrong ? Is possible that it failes, even to list all the files, because I don't have enough space left on my ExtHD ? Why can't duplicity used another location to do that ?

• useful JMX metrics for monitoring WebSphere Application Server (and apps inside it)?

  When managing custom Java applications hosted inside WebSphere Application Server, what JMX metrics do you find most useful for monitoring performance, monitoring availability, and troubleshooting problems? And how do you prefer to slice and visualize those metrics (e.g. chart by top 10 hosts, graph by app, etc.). The more details I can get, the better, as I need to specify a standard set of reports which IT can offer to owners of applications hosted by IT, which those owners can customize but many won't bother. So I'll need to come up with a bunch of generally-applicable reports which most groups can use out-of-the-box. Obviously there's no one perfect answer to this question, so I'll accept the answer with the most comprehensive details and I'll be generous about upvoting any other useful answer. My question is WebSphere-specific, but I realize that most JMX metrics are equally applicable across any container, so feel free to give an answer for JBoss, Tomcat, WebLogic, etc.

• Necessary Infrastructure for large project with many components communicating through IPCs

  I have a fairly in depth question which probably doesn't have an exact answer. As a software engineer, I am usually tasked with working on a program or project with minimal understanding of how other components or programs in the project interact with each other. When one program fails in a sea of multiple components and processes, what infrastructure elements are necessary to ensure that the problem can be accurately tracked to the violating application? More specifically, what infrastructure elements should be necessary for this large project and which are optional but very helpful. One such example I can think of is some form of a common logging infrastructure that allows for a developer or tester to easily browse through a log that contains numerous components for messages that might allude to the culprit program along with a "trail" of what happened before the issue occurred. I'm thinking of something similar to Androids alogcat tool. These necessary infrastructure elements should be language-agnostic. While these elements should be understood by all engineers on the team in question, which elements should be understood at great detail by the technical system engineers and what should the individual software engineers be responsible for adding to their tools to allow for such infrastructures to take hold? Please feel free to ask for clarification if something does not make sense as I understand this question is very broad and needs some refinement. I will refine as necessary from the answers and comments I receive. Thanks for any help!
