  • parsing primitive types using java.util.Scanner

    I'm new to java so forgive the noob question. I have created a swing application that basically has three input strings in JTextFields: loanAmount, interestRate and loanYears and a single submit button with the EventAction. I'm trying to use the java.util.Scanner to parse the input to primitive types that I can use in calculations.   • Cocoa - Localized string from NSDate, NSCalendarDate...

    I'm using NSDate to get a string such as "18 Jun 09", with code: NSDate *theDate = [NSDate date]; NSString *dateString = [theDate descriptionWithCalendarFormat:@"%d %b %y" timeZone:nil locale: nil]; This works, but only results in an English output. I need the output to be localized in the user's default language. Does Cocoa (Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 in this case) provide a facility for this localization or do I have to manually localize for each case of day and & month names my self? (I have provided a locale, but although that does provide a locale-specific ordering of the date, it does not appear to do any localization of day-month names.)

  • Fastest way to find sum of digits on big numbers

    I have some big numbers (again) and i need to find if the sum of the digits is an even number. I tried this: finding the sum of the digits with a while loop and then checking if that sum % 2 equals 0 and it's working but it's too slow for big numbers, because i am given intervals of numbers and if the input is 1999999 19999999999 then my program fails, i cannot complete within the time limit which is 0,1 sec. What to do ? Is there any other faster way to do this ? EDIT: The input 1999999 19999999999 means it will start with 1999999 and check all the numbers like i wrote above until 19999999999, and because we are talking about big numbers (< 2^30) my program is not worthy.

  • Calling software modules (Java, Perl, etc.) from R

    I've recently started using R for Natural Language Processing tasks and find that a lot of applications are available in Java and Perl (for my purposes). For example: A few perl modules are available to find distance measures between words by querying Wordnet. I am aware of the R Wordnet package, but it does not perform the tasks that these CPAN modules do. Many Java packages for NLP are out there, which I'd like to use from within R. I know of rJava, RSPerl, the simple system command amongst others, but I'd like more examples of how I could make calls to Java and Perl applications from R. Recently I tried capturing console output from a perl script. cat( 'print "Hello World\n";',file="hello.pl" ) system(command="c:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl") system(command=paste(Sys.getenv("COMSPEC"),"/c","C:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl")) None of the above system commands showed 'Hello World' on the R console. I've used "system" before to run perl scripts to perform tasks without wanting to capture console output.     I have 2 Tables, User and Mail. In User Table i have 2 columns that i will use, the ID column which makes the relation with the Mail Table and it is the Index of User Table and the Name column. In Mail Table i have Receiver Column and Sender Column. Both columns, Receiver and Sender have a number that relates to the ID Column in the User Table. In the User Table is where the name columns resides and i want to make a query that shows me the Receiver and Sender Columns but with the name of the user, not the ID. Up to this point i have this: SELECT name AS Send, name AS Receive FROM mail,user WHERE sender=guid; I know there is still a part of the query missing but i can not figure out what else to put to tell it to show in the SEND output column the name of the sender and in the RECEIVE output column the name of the receiver.

    The question is a little complex. The problem here is to get rid of duplicates and save the unique elements of array into another array with their original sequence. For example : If the input is entered b a c a d t The result should be : b a c d t in the exact state that the input entered. So, for sorting the array then checking couldn't work since I lost the original sequence. I was advised to use array of indices but I don't know how to do. So what is your advise to do that?

Depending whether the input is an iterable or not, the outcome of the method will be different.
