• Is using SVN for development and CM a bad practice?

  I have a bit of experience with SVN as a pure programmer/developer. Within my company, however, we use SVN as our configuration management tool. I thought using SVN for development at the same time was OK since we could use branches and the trunk for dev, and tags for releases. To me, the tags were the CM part, and the branches/trunk were the dev part. Recently a person, who develops high level code (but outside of the "pure SW" group) mentioned that the existing philosophy (mixing SVN for dev and CM) was wrong... in his opinion. His reasoning is that he thinks the company's CM tool should always link to run-able SW (so branches would break this rule). He also mentioned that a CM tool shouldn't be a backup utility for daily or incremental commits. Finally, he doesn't like the idea of having to jump from revision 143 to 89 in order to get a working copy... and further that CM tools shouldn't allow reversion to a broken state. In general he wants to separate the CM and back-up/dev utilties that SVN offers. Honestly, I am new and the person with this perspective is one of seniority, experience, and success, so I want to field this dilemma with the stackoverflow userbase to see if his approach has merit. My question: Should SVN be purely used for development, and another tool for CM (or vice versa)? Why? If so, what tools would you suggest for this combo? Or do you think that integrating both CM and dev into SVN is the best approach? Why? Thanks.

• Is looking for code examples constantly a sign of a bad developer?

  I am a comp sci student with several years of experience in C and C++, and for the last few years I've been constantly working with Java/Objective C doing app dev and now I have switched to web dev and am mainly focused on ruby on rails and I came to the realization that (as with app dev, really) I reference other code wayyyy too much. I constantly google functionality for lots of things I imagine I should be able to do from scratch and it's really cracked my confidence a bit. Basic fundamentals are not an issue, I hate to use this as an example but I can run through javabat in both java/python at a sprint - obviously not an accomplishment and but what I mean to say is I have a strong base for the fundamentals I think? I know what I need to use typically but reference syntax constantly. Would love some advice and input on this, as it has been holding me back pretty solidly in terms of looking for work in this field even though I'm finishing my degree. My main reason for asking is not really about employment, but more that I don't want to be the only guy at a hackathon not hammering out nonstop code and sitting there with 20 google/github tabs open, and I have refrained from attending any due to a slight lack of confidence... Is a person a bad developer by constantly looking to code examples for moderate to complex tasks?

• Issue about mapping MAC address to Ipv6 address

  I know that the address in ipv6 with prefix range 001 to 111 should use a 64-bit interface identifier that follows the EUI-64 format, which translates the MAC to ipv6 as below. MAC:00-02-b3-1e-83-29 --> 02-02-b3-ff-fe-1e-83-29 --->ipv6 addr: fe80::202:b3ff:fe1e:8329 Then I checked my network status with ipconfig /all on my windows XP, but it seems my ipv6 address doesn't follow the above rule: MAC:00-24-81-XX-XX-XX ipv6 addr:2001:da8:8006:225:0:24:81XX:XXXX Obviously it doesn't follow the EUI-64 format. Instead it just directly use the MAC as the last 8 bytes. Anyone know the reason? Pls Correct me if I am wrong.

• Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • nginx + reverse proxy question

  Hello, I am using nginx right now for our production sites with the reverse proxy to apache that's on the same server and it works fantastic. I'm wondering if I can do this: Install nginx on box #1 in say Canada and have it reverse proxy http requests to box #2 in a datacenter in the USA. I know there may be some latency or delays in loading the page etc but that would probably be not noticable to the end user especially if both servers have 100mb ports. Box #2 only does the apache requests, all images are served from box #1 via nginx. Now, would the end visitor be able to tell in any which way that there are 2 boxes being used? Box #2 has sensitive data which we can't have stolen in the event of hacking etc, so this method helps keep things a bit more secure. Anyone know if this is possible or have done something similar?

The server would behind a CDN but would still need to be able to handle a fair bit of traffic and be possibly load-balanced. I've been tasked with writing such a service, but I wanted to do some due diligence to see what commercial or open source solutions are out there. Google has not been particularly helpful. • Which platform to choose from .Net or Java [closed]

  I know that there is a lot healthy discussion about this topic. but my case is entirely different from these discussions. I have just passed out my graduation. During the graduation period, i had done C#.net and java as well. Now i am working as Android programmer in a company. In the recent times, i have heard a lot about pros and cons of these platforms. What our seniors used to suggest that, ASP.net is a lot better than JSP for website developement. .net provides us lot of in built tools and API's for building powerfull applications. Java's platform independancy has always been issue among them. Security fetures are more in java. .Net has more powerfull IDE's. Now i am a bit confused on which platform to choose from these. I found java better from two, so did i prefer to choose android. Also, the discussion always ends with an issue that java has no scope for job as far has .net does. I would like to hear suggestions on this topic, but it would be better, if you consider indian IT market for this discussion.

• Pages partially load on rapid refresh

  I recently set up a VPS slice with 256MB to run a LAMP stack (Ubuntu 11.04, Apache2, Mysql, PHP5). So far I'm only running a simple Wordpress site on an IP-based virtual host I set up. The performance is excellent, but I've noticed that if I send multiple HTTP requests from the same IP in a short time period, only partial pages are rendered. Then if I wait a bit and refresh the page, the entire page loads again. I noticed this behaviour when accessing the site from two browsers from my office desktop, but it also presents itself if I quickly navigate the site from a single browser (any browser). I'm guessing this is an Apache phenomenon, as the pages are rendered correctly except under the conditions above, but perhaps I'm wrong here. Could it be my hosting company with some kind of DOS protection in place? As a relative Linux/server noob, I'd really appreciate any insight into what settings in Apache could explain this behaviour, and how I might go about changing it.

  Hi all. I have a domain name, and a wordpress account. The domain name isn't hosted anywhere at the moment. I just want to set it up so that my wordpress blog uses the domain. According to the wordpress help page on this issue, i have to do the following: Update your domain’s name servers to the following. Make sure to remove any existing name servers that are already there. NS1.WORDPRESS.COM NS2.WORDPRESS.COM NS3.WORDPRESS.COM So, this is the only thing that i need a server for - if i even need a server at all? Is there a really simple way i can do this for free? Or for very cheap? I'm a bit ignorant about this stuff: i do rails coding but don't get involved in the really technical stuff to do with servers and dns and what have you.

• 12.04 Taking forever for no apparent reason

  First off, I'd just like to say how much I'm loving Ubuntu so far. It's one of my first steps into Linux, but so far it's blown away Windows in almost every regard. Now, onto my problem. My brothers have some old Dell Dimensions that are barely clinging to life. They were both running XP Home Premium. The 2400 installed just fine, no issues at all. Now, the other computer, the 3000 isn't clearing the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the pulsing dots. I've tried multiple discs, including the exact same one that gave me no issue in the other computer, and I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the problem might lay? They're both 32 bit Intel processors, and it's the correct version of Ubuntu. Is it a bad disc drive? Hardware incompatibility? Thanks for any assistance that can be provided. • Ubuntu 14.04: Fine tuning Touchpad for ThinkPad S431

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04 on Lenovo ThinkPad S431. The touchpad is very bumpy, tricky to use. Slides down with a small touch, sometimes jerks erratically. • Can't connect to Internet through WiFi, but can with cable

  I'm using Windows 7 32-bit, Toshiba Portege laptop. I want to connect to the WiFi, usually I can do that easily. But, I don't know.. maybe when I tried to install a Microsoft Research: Mesh Virtual WiFi that could connect more than 2 wireless networks. I wanna try in connecting both Wireless router and my personal Ad-Hoc. Now, my laptop don't recognize my WiFi, well, I can connect to the WiFi but it says: "Limited access" and doesn't really connect to the internet. But when I plug the LAN cable, it works. I know the problem is in the laptop's wireless connection or in the properties. Any help for this? UPDATE: The IP and DNS settings, I set to automatic, and when I ran diagnostic, Windows tells me that the wireless network adapter is the problem, but they told me to insert the LAN cable, so how to fix the wireless? They didn't tell me how to fix that.

• Windows Desktop Randomly Switches Resolution

  Once per log in a specific account, Windows XP is switching to 800x600 and 8 (looks like) bit color. It then after a few seconds switches back to the regular settings. This, so far, has only happened, once per log in session but it is becoming very annoying for the end user. :P Any ideas? I've tried turning off hardware acceleration as well as getting rid of her picture desktop wallpaper but nothing has made a difference. Thanks for any help!

• How to benchmark kernel (-Os vs -O2)

  It seems logical to me that on a 64-bit kernel compiling it to optimize for size might help overall. (My distro of choice uses -O2) It has the benefits of more registers and memory and perhaps less cache contention than normal optimized code. I have a kernel compiled like this and it seems excellent. However my question is how can I prove this? I like using Phoronix for "real world" sort of benchmarks so I would prefer to test cases like that. What should I pick to test? Does anyone else have any alternatives? • Is there a product planning tool that has these specific features? [closed]

  I am working on a web startup in the early stages, and we are struggling a bit to manage the scope and scheduling of our product. We have loads of high-level features in the pipeline, but we need a good way of scheduling them for release iterations and breaking them into actual tasks that can be scheduled (that could be a separate tool, but integration would be preferred). I would say that our product can be pretty cleanly divided into "aspects", and we want to be able to separate features by the aspect to which they apply. Perhaps most importantly, it should be really simple to create and move features between target release points. We don't have physical space for a war room type setup, so whatever we settle upon should ideally have a cloud-type web interface. Right now, we're using Excel to make a grid of product aspects vs. target releases, and we store features at the intersections. But this is not providing a good way of indexing tasks to those features or being able to move them around. I would much rather have something that automates the grid overview. I'm less interested in something that helps with low-level scheduling than I am in something that is good at organizing the product plan at the long-term, high-level view. Is there a product planning tool out there that matches these specifications?

• Anyone can suggest some Game Frameworks for GNU/Linux? [closed]

  So I've been developing a little bit with XNA + C# in Windows, not really much: just some 2D stuff, but I've found that XNA is a really good framework. I'm a GNU/Linux user, and I'm definitely migrating my desktop to Gentoo Linux (I've been using Arch in my laptop for a while now). But, of course, I need a C# + XNA alternative... I'm not really an expert in any language, so I can really pick up anything (except, maybe, Functional ones), I prefer C-Like languages like Java or Ruby, I tried Python but found the Whitespace syntax confusing. I would like to hear some of you'r suggestions, I'm not asking for "the best", but for "some suggestions", so I think this is objective enough. Probably you're going to suggest C++ + SDL, but I would prefer something more "High Level" like XNA, but I'm open to discuss anything. So... any ideas ? • How to remove all associated files and configuration settings of an app installed through 'force architecture' command

  A few weeks ago I installed a 32 bit .deb file through the 'force architecture' command (on my 64bit notebook), however the procedure was unsuccessful and I used the apt-get purgecommand to uninstall the app. It seems there are some leftovers of the app I uninstalled which has now broken system update. Synaptic recommended a sudo apt-get install -fwhich I did in the terminal with this initial response: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... • enable hardware virtulization in BIOS

  I am running a FOXCONN AM2+ M61PMV with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 windows 7 ultimate 64 bit From startup I have hit the del key and the options for enabling the Hardware virtulization are not there. I have checked the Microsoft tool that says I can run virtual and i have checked SecurAble, that says yes. But I have an open case w/microsoft (they've been trying for a week [7 tech support people later]) and they're saying that i need to ensure that the hardware is enabled. Where do I go to see? is there another way besides from the start up? HELP!

• Looking for an example of how a software project can be managed/deployed

  My company is evaluating adopting off-the-shelf ALM products to aid in our development lifecycle; we currently use our own homegrown solutions to manage requirements gathering, specification documentation, testing, etc. One of the issues I am having is understanding how to move code between stages of development. We have what we call a pipeline, which consists of particular stops: [Source] - [QC] - [Production] At the first stop, the developer works out a solution to some requested change and performs individual testing. When that process is complete (and peer review has been performed), our ALM system physically moves the affected programs from the [Source] runtime environment to the [QC] runtime environment. This movement of code is triggered by advancing the status of the change request to match the stage of the pipeline. I have been searching the internet for a few days trying to find how the process is accomplished elsewhere -- I have read a bit about builds, automated testing, various ALM products, etc. but nowhere does any of this state how builds interact with initial change requests, what the triggers are, how dependencies are managed, how the various forms of testing are accommodated (e.g. unit testing, integration testing, regression testing), etc. Can anyone point me to any resources detailing specific workflows or attempt to explain (generically) how a change could/should be tracked and moved though the development lifecycle? I'd be very appreciative. Note: I've cleaned up the question to hopefully make it easier to understand. Also, I found another question (which I can't find now) that referenced this book, which sounds like it might be exactly what I am looking for -- not sure if I want to shell out the cash for it, though.

• How can I persist certificates in Java's cacerts?

  We need to have a certificate in Java's cacerts keystore for one of our servers that is authenticated by LDAP. We are using Ubuntu server. We have successfully done this by updating the cacerts file in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/security but occasionally a Java update is installed and the cacerts file seems to be getting replaced by a default one that doesn't contain our changes. This doesn't happen very often but it is becoming a bit of a pain when it does happen. Is there a better way of adding things to cacerts so that they don't get lost when a Java update happens? • cisco vpn client randomly disconnects with pfSense

  My network has two gateways, one is a pfSense box that everyone uses. The other one is a TP-Link firewall essentially for tests. Some machines inside my network need to access a VPN through the Cisco VPN client. If one of those machines is using the pfSense box as the gateway, I experience random connection drops on the VPN. If I am using the TP-Link gateway that doesn't happen. I've tried changing the MTU in the pfSense box and that improved things a little bit but didn't really solve the problem. I also followed the guidelines for traffic shaping in pfSense and the connections still drop quite often. Ideas?

• Is it possible to continue torrent downloads from other client

  I have downloaded a torrent file but I downloaded it using bitlord. And because bit lord doesnt have the ability like initial seeding. I decided to use utorrent. Ive already tried to continue it. What I did was to: Opened the original torrent file in utorrent. Target where the incomplete bitlord incomplete file was. But it seems that utorrent isn't detecting the file and it makes another copy of it and start to download from the beginning. Im at about 80 percent and there are only 18 seeds but there's 17 leech. And my connection is slow so I really have to initial seed. Other details: I've reformatted the original machine where I downloaded it. Also didn't copy the original application.

• Windows 7 - XP Mode - Apache

  I've setup Virtual PC and XP Mode on my Windows 7 Pro. Using Apache 2.0.52 I have no problems having my website up and running on the Windows 7 machine. But Under VPC/XP Mode the best I can do is Localhost mode. What do I need to do to enable http connections? I need the XP Mode as besides the website I also run a Web BBS and a Dos based (via telnet) BBS. Some of the apps in the Dos BBS just won't work under 64 bit, no matter what setting (capability) are used. Thanks in advance...
