• Very poor battery life on Lenovo ThinkPad W500 laptop

  I have a new ThinkPad W500 laptop (w/ 9 cell battery) running Windows 7 RTM 64-bit. All drivers* and BIOS are the latest. Battery life appeared poor so I performed several tests under the following conditions: Battery starts with 100% charge Screen on minimum brightness Screen saver running Wifi n enabled and active "Normal" set of programs running including Outlook 2007, FeedDemon, TweetDeck and antivirus Laptop left untouched during tests Under the above conditions, I clocked under 2 hours of battery life across 3 tests (1:49, 1:52, 1:47). If I actually use the computer, we're looking at 1:30. Something is not right... The smoking gun here is that Lenovo hasn't officially released Windows 7 drivers for this laptop. I haven't tried with Vista or XP yet. What are others seeing? Update: For W500 owners w/ the 9 cell battery, what value do you see for "Full charge capacity" when on the Battery tab of the Power Manager utility? I see 81.87 Wh.

• Install OS X 10.5 on Intel 1GB Macbook

  I'm trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on a MacBook that previously had 10.4 on it. i am getting an error after selecting the language. What could be causing a box on the screen that says: Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. It's an Intel MacBook with 1GB of DDR2 memory. 80GB hard drive. It has been formatted now, so there's no going back. According to the System Profiler on the 10.5 boot CD, the MacBook is version MacBook2,1. Thanks!

• What changes does McAfee make to the registry?

  I'm wondering if anyone knows exactly what McAfee does to the registry. I've got a computer on which JavaScript no longer works. I read online that McAfee replaces the script interpreter dll path in the registry to point to its own dll, which filters, and in turn calls the official "jscript.dll". I found multiples of these in the registry, and corrected them, but it still hasn't fixed the problem - JavaScript still does not work. I'm considering just reinstalling, and then re-uninstalling McAfee to fix it. However, for the record, I still want to know if anyone has, or can provide an online list of all the changes McAfee makes to the registry.   Today I just returned from Bangalore User Group Meeting. Attending User Group meeting is indeed fun and really great experience. The best part of the User Group is meeting like minded people and have a great conversation with them. During the meeting I was asked why one has to go online to access SQL Server Product Documentation. I can clearly see there can be many reasons for why one wants the documentation to be available offline. The reasons can be anything but not limited to Company Firewall No Internet (power failure, on road or disaster) Internet Bandwidth Limitatoin Company Proxy Issues … and much more… In this kind of situation one needs documentation which is offline and easily available in local computer. The Microsoft SQL Server 2012 setup installs only the Help Viewer and related components for managing Help settings. Setup does not directly install any documentation. All of the SQL Server documentation is available online. Well, Microsoft has recently released Production Documentation available for offline users as well. You just have to download the executable file and follow all the instructions. • How to connect 3 monitors into an Asus 9800GT

  I don't know if this is possible but, I've heard that there exist some DVI connections that allow and recognize the connection os 2 Monitores in the same port (I can be wrong tho). I have an Asus 9800GT 512MB on my computer that runs Ubuntu 12.04 and Arch Linux, and I am trying to connect 3 monitors. I already have 2 (17" each), and want to connect a new one with 19", but on my 9800GT I only have 2 DVI connections. Is there anyway to have 3 monitores extended without having to buy a new GPU ? • Unable to find a disable button for pop-up bubbles in 2.8.0.851

  I'm still using 2.8.0.722 on my Mac while a friend has upgraded to 2.8.0.851 The newer version on her computer has pop-up bubbles for every chat message when the chat window is minimized. Neither of us are able to find where to disable this feature. The difficulty arises when we minimize a chat window, but the bubbles continue to show everything the other person is typing, even when one of our kids is with us for a moment looking at something else on the screen. We have checked all throughout the Preferences settings, most notably the privacy and chat areas, to no avail. Ultimately we would like to disable these chat pop-up bubbles so that when a chat window is minimized, that conversation and all incoming messages will remain private until we restore that chat box to be viewable on the screen again.   There is an interesting issue in Software Engineering which I'd like to explore. The issue is firstly what is and what is not software engineering. Secondly, if software engineering is what the IEEE defines it to be, what are good examples of companies which practice the SE? Detailed question: Software engineering (SE) is the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the design, development, operation, and maintenance of software, and the study of these approaches; that is, the application of engineering to software. [updated definition, originating in 610.12-1990 - IEEE Standard Glossary of Software Engineering Terminology] If we consider as SE only those approaches that 100% match the above definition, we naturally get to SWEBOK (Software Engineering Body of Knowledge) which is created by the IEEE and the ACM. I'm seeking the answer to this: How can I find a company outside the defence industry which practices the SE as defined by IEEE? Clues: SE originates in 1968 NATO conference. The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is based in the US at Carnegie Mellon University. Funding of the SEI is largely done by the US DoD. Defence industry uses the SE and sometimes has a partnership with the IEEE (as in case of Boeing). • How do I see what connections are being made?

  My DDWRT router is showing that my computer has a connection count around 600! The router is at 100% CPU use. How can I see what's making all the connections? So far, I've opened up Resource Monitor and checked the network tab. I can sort by which program is using the most network bandwidth (Pale Moon browser), but I can't see what's making all of the connections. Or rather, where all the connections are being toward (trying to find what tab must be making all of these connections). I've also tried netstat -A, but it apparently doesn't show the actual number of connections being made. At least, the list of established connections isn't very long, by any means (like enough to account for the 500+ connections apparently being made.

  have main office pfsense firewall configured like this: local networks WAN - internet LAN - local network VOIP - IP phones need to connect remote offices (multi-users) and single remote users (from home) use IPSEC or OpenVPN to build "permanent" automatically connecting tunnels from remote location to main location. in remote locations, network will look like this: WAN - internet LAN - local network multiple users VOIP - multiple IP phones in order for the IP phones to work they have to be able to "see" the VOIP network and the VOIP server back at the main office for single remote users ( like from home ) the setup will be similar but only one phone and one computer so questions: best way to tie networks together? IPSEC or OpenVPN can this be setup to automatically connect ? any issues/suggestions with that design/topology ? QoS or issues with running the VOIP traffic over a VPN throughput, quality etc.. obviously depends on remote locations connection to some degree

• Why am I getting this "Connection to PulseAudio failed" error?

  I have a computer that runs Mythbuntu 11.10. It has an external USB Kenwood Digital Audio device. When I open up pavucontrol, I get this message: If I do as the message suggests and run start-pulseaudio-x11, I get this output: $ start-pulseaudio-x11 Connection failure: Connection refused pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused How do I correct this error? Update: Somewhere during the course of doing the suggested tests in the comments, a new audio device has now become visible in my sound settings. I have not attached or made any new device, so this must be the result of of some setting change. The device I use and know about is the Kenwood Audio device. • Mac - Run java program at launch

  I want to launch a java program (server program) at computer start up. I can run it from the command line perfectly. I created /Library/Server/startFS.sh. The file is executable by root and contains: cd /Library/Server/FiloSync /usr/bin/java -jar /Library/Server/FiloSync/filosync-server-latest.jar -p 7000 -s 7001 I can't get my launchd plist included here, the formatting is all off. I can run it fine from the command line: './startFS.sh' but when I put create the plist (via Lingon), nothing happens. Now, when run, it outputs a few lines to the console. Might that be problem?? I have tried prepending 'nohup' and post pending '&', but no combination seems to work. Help please.

• Dell Docking Station Doesn’t Detect USB Mouse and Keyboard

  I’ve found myself in this situation with multiple Dell docking stations and multiple Dell laptops running various Windows operating systems.  I don’t know why the docking station stops recognizing my USB mouse and keyboard – it just does.  It’s black magic.  The last time around I just starting plugging the mouse and keyboard into the docked laptop directly and went about my business (as if I wasn’t completing missing out on a couple of the core benefits of using a docking station.)  I guess that’s what happens when you forget how you got yourself out of the mess the last time around.  I had been in this half-assed state for a couple of weeks now, but a coworker fortunately got themselves in and out of the same pickle this morning.  Procrastinate long enough and the solution will just come to you, right? Here’s how to get yourself out of this mess: Undock your computer Unplug your docking station Count to an arbitrary number greater than 12.  (Not sure this is really required, but…) Plug your docking station back in Redock your machine I put my machine to sleep before taking the aforementioned actions.  My coworker completely shutdown his laptop instead.  The steps worked on both of our Win 7 machines this morning and, who knows, it might just work for you too.

• Dual Monitor difficulties (VirtualBox ubuntu host) - rdesktop sessions mirror

  I am running ubuntu 9.10 host with a Windows guest and need to extend my guest windows desktop into the second monitor (otherwise I will have to convert to a dual boot situation because this is a work furnished computer, please HELP!!) Current Situation: Windows Guest Running with VRDP enabled and successfully connecting. Guest Additions running and VBox set to 2 monitors and I see two monitors in display settings. connecting via 2 different rdesktop sessions mirrors the display. even though display settings of Guest Windows is set to extend desktop. is there a rdesktop option to signify to the VBox it is the second display? I need the second connection be the second display. any ideas?

• Booting Ubuntu Failure : error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

  I have installed ubuntu 12.10 in a WD external harddrive (320GB). This is a complete installation, not live USB. When I plug it in my HP desktop I go to the BIOS settings and boot off the harddrive, everything work perfectly -as it should. Now this works on everysingle computer and laptop in my house (all HP) -except for ONE. My HP ProBook 4530s. When I select to boot of the USB I get the Message: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0' Now, I have removed the hdd from my laptop and the external drive is the ONLY drive plugged in. Bellow is a picture of the screen. After the message I navigate to ls / (as shown below): After here I try to acces other folders under ls /, for example, I try to go to ls /boot to get to the grub folder. Then I get the same message as before: as shown by the image below: The only folders I can access without getting the message again are /home, /run and /usr. So how do I: Boot Ubuntu from GRUB2 (this screen) manually Set to automatically boot Ubuntu If possible an explanation for this problem Thanks!

• Trouble with setting up Mac SSH with TP-LINK router

  I have a Mac running OS X 10.7.2, and a TP-Link TL-WR740N (whose control panel looks like this). Remote Login is on in the Mac's System Preferences, and port 22 is set to forward on the router. I can access my Mac as a web server using the external IP on port 80, which I have set up through the same port-forwarding mechanism provided by the router, but when I try to ssh server@external-ip, it just times out after a long while. (The same thing happens when I try vnc.) I can, however, ssh and vnc successfully into that computer while I'm on the same network when using its internal IP. Since ssh appears to work and port forwarding appears to work, I can't figure out what's causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea what might cause this?

  Good day to all... I have some "little" problems with ffserver and ffmpeg... What I need to do is to broadcast a live video. So I got the cam... used vlc and used send stream option. I sent it to 192.168.1.9:64555, which is a virtual machine on the same computer, running centos. On the virtual machine I run the command ffmpeg -i 192.168.1.9:64555 output.mpg. • Motherboard on, but nothing will start

  I'll try and be as clear as possible. Recently I purchased a barebones kit for my first attempt at a full PC assembly. I've gone through and connected all the parts correctly based on numerous examples that confirm everything is connected correctly. The motherboard and the video card are receiving power based on the fact that the motherboard's power LED is on and the video card has some LEDs on. Nothing else in the computer will come on when pressing the power button on the case. No fans, no hard drive, no CPU fan. Not even for a split second. I also receive no beeping noise from the speaker connected to the motherboard. I've also tried swapping the reset and power connectors from the front of the case to no luck.

• Command-line access to remote MySQL server

  I administer a website on a remote, shared host. My web host offers MySQL, and I am able to access this from my Mac OS X computer using a GUI program, Sequel Pro. That works great. But I want to script some queries, and Sequel Pro is not scriptable. What should I do? I've read about tunneling to mysql via SSH. I have shell access to the server, with an SSH key on my Mac, so ssh [email protected] -p 7978 gets me in. Should tunneling the MySQL port 3306 work? Like this? ssh [email protected] -L 3306:127.0.0.1:3306 (It "times out" after a minute.) Do I need to install mysql on my Mac?

• XFCE: active panel buttons when mouse is on screen edge

  I'm using XFCE 4.6.1 (Xubuntu distribution) on my laptop and main computer; the settings are approximately the same. so far for the intro. What I'm experiencing is that when going to the screen edge over the task bar on the laptop, the button under the mouse is active. On the main machine however, having the mouse on the screen edge, the button below it doesn't react at all! Only if I move the pointer towards the center a bit, the hover highlight starts and the button becomes clickable. I've tried to change the panel size, desktop theme and a few other settings, but none seems to cure that problem. Is there something that causes this problem? (Googling also seems to give no results)

• Lack of Virtual Memory - confusion

  Specs ahead of time: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 1 GB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / 350W PSU / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, XP has pop-ups saying that I am low on virtual memory. However, I have a program called SmartRAM (part of Advanced SystemCare by IObit) and it displays CPU & Page File Usage and Free Physical and Virtual Memory. That program shows that I have at least 2000 MB free virtual memory on my machine when the XP pop-ups say that I'm low on virtual memory. First off, would a complete lack of virtual memory cause my computer to freeze? Secondly, how can I solve this lack of virtual memory? (A complete reformat is possible but can't be done immediately...) Thanks in advance.

• Running hardware with only 32bit drivers in 64bit windows

  Recently we had to upgrade a system to handle added HD IP cameras. This upgrade involved an entirely new computer build with the exception of a rather pricey Geovision DVR (PCI/GV1480 series). Apparently while these cards do support Windows 7, they do not support Windows 7 x64. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place here trying to figure out how we can remedy this, is there a virtualization solution that will allow devices with driver issues to passthru to the Guest OS? I was thinking XPMode may work for this solution however I am unsure if it runs 32bit or 64bit and if it'll allow driver-issue devices to pass to it. • graphics-card makes sound-card produce a buzzing sound

  Recently I bought a new GPU: GeForce GTX 550 Ti, and after installing it I get a strange buzzing sound. It's not always there, just sometimes (mostly when I open some game, but sometimes also in browsers etc.). It's not a capacitor or a fan, as unplugging speakers from sound-card makes the 'bzzzzzzz' go away. However, muting windows doesn't mute this sound. I'm pretty sure it is fault of the new GPU, but how is this happening and can I fix it? Can it be a low power supply? I thought of buying a stronger unit, but as everything works, and computer doesn't shut down, I hesitate.

• Can I upgrade my Soltek sl-67a-c motherboard from Pentium II to Pentium III?

  I have a Pentium III processor and I thought I would replace the Pentium II on my Soltek SL-67A-C. The motherboard has Slot 1 so the PIII fits in fine, however, when I turn on the computer the bios does not come up. I see references to a "67af3.zip" bios upgrade file out there but can't find any source to download it. I am thinking I may have to adjust the jumpers on the motherboard to match the speed of the processor, but I am not sure how to go about that. Any suggestions?
