• Serial number not found, copy of Windows not genuine

  I have an HP-G71-340US notebook that I purchased 11/29/09. When I power it up, a black screen comes on that shows "serial number not found" and it also says that my copy of Windows 7 Home Basic is not genuine – but my computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium. In BIOS, my serial number is not shown either and I did pull out the little battery to reset it which allowed me to bypass the suddenly new locked BIOS that needed a password to enter. I'm sure this is a masterpiece created by my 6 or 9 yr old child while trying to play on my laptop. Can I fix these two problems?

  I am having troubles on mounting my ntfs hard drive on linux. • System shuts down immediately after few sconds

  I have a computer with following specification and was working fine after re-installing the system and refitting sink fan unit. Recently it shuts down automatically after a few seconds. I checked PSU by shorting pin no.s 13 & 14 as well as 14 & 15. It worked well means the PSU fan moves. But I never checked the voltages at different wires. I refitted the heat sink fan by applying thermal paste. but it behaved the same. Again I refitted the Heat Sink Fan, then it worked for 2 minutes and again shut down. Now it shuts down immediately after switching on. Mother board : M26GTM-3VP CPU : AMD athlon PSU : 450 watt Can anyone help?

• Compiling zip component for PHP 5.2.11 in MAMP PRO

  Helo I installed MAMP PRO on my Macbook Pro (10.6) some time ago. Now I would like to use zip functions in php. I found that I must add zip.so to my extension folder and edited php.ini. On my computer I have two different versions of PHP one in MAMP folder and other in user/lib which was pre-installed on my system. Now I wish to compile my zip library for MAMP version. I got zip sources for my version of PHP then in terminal called function /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/phpize so it uses mamp php version ./configure make then I moved compile zip.so to extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613. • How to automatically disable secondary monitor in Windows 7

  My primary monitor is attached to my onboard video card. My secondary monitor is attached to my PCI-E card. When I first start my computer, only the primary monitor is on, and it is the only monitor that is recognized. While I'm in Windows 7, if I turn on my secondary monitor, Windows 7 automatically detects it, and expands my desktop to stretch across both monitors. But if I turn off the secondary monitor, Windows 7 doesn't automatically disable it. Is there a way I can get it to automatically disable when I turn it off, or is there a utility that makes it easier to disable it instead of having to go to screen resolution?

• Video for HTML5 -- ffmpeg commands

  I'd like to allow my users to upload their videos (no clue what format they'll be) and convert them into the following formats: MP4 Ogg Webm I think it's those 3 formats I need in order to support HTML5, at least per http://mediaelementjs.com/. I've tried various commands that I found on the web. Some of them worked, some of them used old syntax, some of them worked only on my computer and not others, some of them gave conflicting information, etc. Are there any FFMPEG experts here that can provide the "proper" commands? I'm not particularly trying to achieve anything special. I just want to be able to convert the video into something playable on the web. Highest quality, smallest filesize, etc. are the basic goals. Something that works without a lot of special configurations would be ideal, too. I ran into a lot of "missing presets" problems.

• Ubuntu not showing disk

  I have a laptop which had broken windows 7 installed on it. I created a ubuntu live usb and tried installing ubuntu over that win7. After a few minutes, I got an error message, so I needed to restart the computer. Now the laptop says that there is no bootable device - reasonable message given that there was an error during linux installation. But: Bios can see my hard drive, When I start ubuntu in live mode, and try either sudo fdisk -l or gparted, it doesn't show any hard disk drives. I am 90% sure that hdd is broken, but it is wierd that bios can see it, and ubuntu doesn't. How can I be 100% sure about that hdd? Is there any additional way of detecting my hdd from ubuntu?

• Did you forget me?

  I know it has been a long time since I last blogged. Still at it, looking for work in the “IT” field. Had another phone interview (only found out during the interview that it was for one year contract job, but I still would take it) for a Help Desk job. Didn’t get it, they thought I was not a application support person and more of a hardware support. Gee..I started out in “IT” as a programmer. Then a programmer/computer operator, then a Tandem/Lan operator and finally a Network operator. I had to deal with so many different operating systems, software and applications.   And they thought I was too hardware. Well I am working a temp day job with the U.S. Census. It gets me out of the house and out in the country. If find getting paid to check for living quarters not bad job, except for the many houses I find that are up for sale and looks like it was not the owners (former owners it seems) idea, with the kids toys still in the yards. Not good for some one with a over active imagine or for my truck. So far I have backed in to ditch (and had to be pulled out), in to power pole (no damage to pole and very little to truck) and a mail box (no damage to truck but mail box was leaning a little) in the last two weeks.   Oh an I have started reading/using “The Love Dare” book from the movie “Fireproof”. I restarted (yes I have had to go back to day one from day five) the dare this Sunday. Dare one dare/day one “Love Is Patient” and the first dare is (reading from the book is): “The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although Love is communicated in a number of ways. Our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to sys nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue that to say something you’ll regret. “. This was almost too easy as I can hold back from saying anything bad to any one but, this can also be a problem in life (you hold back for so long and!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   We have a LAN where workstations are randomly losing network connectivity for brief moments of time. The workstations can also take a long time to login to the domain. During our troubleshooting we have found an error log on a few Windows 7 workstations: Warning BROWSER 8021 The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \\random-pc on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{BBABCDE9-D8A0-4399-93F2-492FE0848B12}. The data is the error code. What do these errors mean? What computers should have the Computer Browser service enabled, workstations and/or servers? The environment is a mix of Windows 7 & Windows XP workstations on a Windows Server SBS 2011 SP1 domain.

• Cannot format SD memory card

  Hello everyone I have a SD memory card which is of local manufacturer it allows to read & copy from it but not write as it is now write-protected so i want to format that card but could not. To format this card I have tried 1) DD command 2) mkfs -f vfat command 3) creating registry entry under storage device policy in window with write value 0 4) disk part command in window to clear attributes in which it show all attributes are clear ie no write protection 5) I format card in windows through control panel - administrative tools- computer management - disk management, then it show as formatted but when I tried to create new partition it give CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK error 6) I downloaded a format utility from transcend site and formatted first it shows write protected again doing format it formats and tells to remove and reinsert after reinsertion it shows the previous data as it is

• OS X Snow Leopard fails to boot after upgrade to 10.6.1

  I'm a fairly recent mac user. Been using windows for decades and happily switched. But i upgraded from 10.6 to 10.6.1 last night and the upgrade looks like it failed. I restarted the machine when it asked to then went to bed. In the morning the computer was still trying to shut itself off. So i forced the shutdown, restarted, but now i'm stuck with the loading spinner. What can i do? UPDATE: Verbose didn't show anything interesting. i also did the hardware test. Nothing comes up wrong. Disk utility did not find any error on the HD. But, it did show a fatal error when checking permissions.

• Polygons vs sprites rendering performance in Unity for windows phone 8

  I'm currently building a windows phone 8 game with unity, having 111 (no more no less) sprites being updated each frames. I have a strong overhead in the profiler (70% to 90% minimum) I tried the following to get higher frame rate, I'm running it with minimum quality settings, I tried disabling and enabling V-Sync Finally I managedto get 60Fps, but I still have large overhead. I believe I should have more than 60Fps for such few amount. Moreover, I still have to implement the game logic over this so I'd like some room in my FPS to be able to work. I was wondering if it would be better in terms of performance to use polygons instead of sprites? As sprites are quite new in Unity, (that would give me around 222 triangles). Did someone tried to check the performance differences between sprites and actual mesh renderes in Unity when it comes to phones? If so what could be the best option in that case? FYI : I'm using the Windows Phone 8 emulator on Visual studio, I have a compliant computer for that so it should normally reflect the behavior of a real phone (expecting some differences but still...) EDIT : To clarify my question i wonder what is the most efficient in windows phone 8 : Sprites or Mesh renderers?

• Would Microsoft Security Essentials be adequate protection?

  Is Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) adequate protection for my computer? What is the experience with this product? EDIT. On 2009-10-31 I found out about a comparison of AV Suites. MSE did VERY well. EDIT: One that I found interesting was "Raven", who mentioned that AV software has to hook deeply into the OS, and who better to design this than the designer of the OS. EDIT: My personal experience is that I like it, but I also use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. Each of them sometimes come up with one the others missed or ignored.

• Netcat server output with multiple greps

  I'm trying to send some data from my web browser to a txt file on another computer. This works fine: echo 'Done' | nc -l -k -p 8080 | grep "GET" >> request_data.txt Now I want to do some further processing before writing the http request data to my txt file (involving regex maniuplation). But if I try to do something like this nothing is written to the file: echo 'Done' | nc -l -k -p 8080 | grep "GET" | grep "HTTP" >> request_data.txt (for simplicity of explanation I've used another grep instead of say awk) Why does the 2nd grep not get any data from the output of the first grep? I'm guessing piping with netcat works differently to what I've assumed to get this far. How do I perform a 2nd grep before writing to my txt file? My debugging so far suggests: It is nothing to do with stderr vs stdout Parentheses don't help

  Here's a crude representation of what I've got at home: floor 2 INTERNETS ---- MODEM/ROUTER ---- MY COMPUTER | floor 1 WIFI REPEATER ---- stuff | floor 0 more stuff TELEVISION Now, as part of our sat tv subscription we can get an additional service if we connect our decoder (located by TELEVISION obviously) to the internet. What they suggest is buying a Netgear 3DHD WIRELESS HOME THEATER NETWORKING KIT holy shit isn't my bullshit-o-meter flying high right now from the general buzzwordyness of this thing. What does this thing actually do that our existing wireless-enabled routers don't do? What's the point of having a third wifi router in the same house, this time only for one television? If I do decide to plunge €99 for this, should I connect it to the wifi repeater (which does not provide AAA quality internet, at least for all gaming purposes) or to my modem/router (risking issues with low signal?).

• Remote connection IP to use

  I have two laptops that both run on ubuntu and installed ssh server and ssh client on them. One is usually on my desk at home and one I usually bring to my company. When I'm at home I can easily ssh to one from the other by typing this command (to login to the other laptop whose IP address is: 192.168.0.105) : ssh -p 22 [email protected] However, When I'm at my company, I try to type the same command and ofcourse it doesn't work. I understand that when at home I'm on LAN network, that my laptops actually using my ISP's address which differ from 192.168.0.107 asummed 203.113.131.1. So could you tell me what IP that ssh shoud use for my laptop (at work) to connet to my computer at home? Thank you.

  I have noticed some error during the Linux boot. They seem to continue to occur after the boot adding lines to the log every few seconds. Once booted this normally does not appear to be causing any problems. However, around 1 in 10 boots results in a kernel panic and the computer has on two or three occasions suddenly rebooted after being powered on for a number of hours. I presume the cause of the reboot is a kernel panic as well. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had Ubuntu installed on the computer for around a year. I have googled around and not found anything useful. I have provided the kernel log lines and the output of smartctl. • Offline installer for Windows 8?

  I have a computer repair service, and can see a few more people wanting Windows 8 updowngraded. Because of New Zealand's internet speeds it takes 1-2 hours to run the download part of the official Windows 8 upgrade tool. This means I have to go back to people the next day. I would like to keep an "offline" version of the Windows 8 upgrade tool on my flash drive, so I can avoid this inconvenience. Obviously it would still require a legit credit card etc, it just comes with the download part not needed. I cannot find such a tool. Does one exist?

  I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

  I would like an old desktop box to use my laptop as a router to access the internet. Here is my setup: I have one ethernet port in the side of my laptop which I want to use to get internet access to my desktop computer. The laptop is connected to the LAN via a wireless link. Both systems run Linux. The desktop autoconfigures itself using DHCP. The laptop is a Kubuntu system. I do not have any crossover cables, though wireshark on the laptop sees the DHCP requests from the desktop just fine, so I doubt that I need one. What do I have to do to make this work?

  Possible Duplicate: How do you run windows explorer as a different user? Is it possible to start a Windows Explorer with the rights of another domain user? I tried to do the following to start a Windows Explorer on my computer as my domain Administrator, but without success: Right click on C:\Windows\explorer.exe to select Run as different user, Enter the domain administrator credentials: Domain\Administrator ************ The windows explorer session only opens with my current user rights (Domain\me). The reason behind my question is that I want to change some folder rights on a domain shared disk and I need the Domain\Administrator user rights to do it. Usually, I do it by login as Domain\Administrator on the server hosting the shared disk but I would like to be able to do it from my PC, logged as my current login (Domain\me). EDIT As seen in the linked posts, it is not possible anymore on Windows Vista or 7. On Windows XP, the solution is to do: runas /user:domain\username "explorer /separate"

• Light-weight, free, database query tool for Windows?

  My question is very similar to the one here except pertaining to a Windows tool. I am also referencing this table and what I found here with a Google search. However, I have no idea which tool would best meet my (very basic) purposes. I am currently using Excel with a basic ODBC connection string to query my database at work. However, Excel is pretty memory-heavy and a basic query tends to throw my computer into a 30 second stall-a-thon. Is there a free tool out there that is light-weight and can serve the same purpose when provided an ODBC connection and a SQL query? Also would prefer that it easily copies over to a spreadsheet as needed.

  The "Show In Finder" action isn't working on Mac OS X Mountain Lion. The problem has just started to occur all the time, before it was a bit sporadic, but now it happens all the time. Things that don't work: In the chrome Downloads page clicking any of the "Show in Finder" links. Right clicking a file in XCode and choosing "Show in Finder" Things that work: open . in terminal command-n after command tabbing to Finder. • GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )
