• Over Optimistic Daily Productivity

  I'm a junior developer and have been working since I graduated last summer so coming up to a year now. I have this issue that is starting to get to me. Every night I think back to what I did that day, feel bad that I didn't get as much done as I would have liked and then tick off in my head all the things I'll get done the following day. Come the end of the following day I end haven't gotten through half of what I wanted to. This over optimism that I'm suffering from. Might it be just because I'm relatively new to the profession and aren't aware of how long things will actually take me. The work might be quick to think through in my head but all sorts of time sync's involved can bleed away the hours. If not that then perhaps it's the technology stack that I'm working on. SharePoint isn't the easiest thing to develop for and it's certainly something I came into not knowing a whole lot about. If it's because I'm not yet skilled enough to predict how long things will take me, is this trait of over optimistic predictions universal to the profession? I'd appreciate any input from those experienced with working with younger developers and those that might have suffered from this themselves. [EDIT] Perhaps I worded the question badly. I'm interested in just general day to day work rather than overall project completion estimation.

  Related Question- Ways to prepare your mind before coding?. I'm having a hard time taking my mind off of work projects in my personal time. It's not that I have a stressful job or tight deadlines; I love my job. I find that after spending the whole day writing code & trying to solve problems, I have an extremely hard time getting it out of my mind. I'm constantly thinking about the current project/problem/task all the time. It's keeping me from relaxing, and in the long run it just builds stress. Personal projects help to some extent, but mostly just to distract me. I still have source code bouncing around my head 16 hours a day. I'm still relatively new to the workforce. Have you struggled with this, perhaps as a young developer? How did you overcome it? Can anyone offer general advice on winding down after a long programming session?

• Limit CPU usage of a process

  I have a service running which periodically checks a folder for a file and then processes it. (Reads it, extracts the data, stores it in sql) So I ran it on a test box and it took a little longer thaan expected. The file had 1.6 million rows, and it was still running after 6 hours (then I went home). The problem is the box it is running on is now absolutely crippled - remote desktop was timing out so I cant even get on it to stop the process, or attach a debugger to see how far through etc. It's solidly using 90%+ CPU, and all other running services or apps are suffering. • jquery ajaxstart ajaxstop show hide

  As usually seemingly simple things take days to resolve, maybe someone could point me to a solution but after 2 days I give up on the following problem; In html, in a form I have a button that is supposed to trigger loading of data through ajax call: <button type="" class="btn" onclick="getData(); return false;">Show Data</button> in javascript: $(document).ajaxStart(function() { $("#qloader").show(); }).ajaxStop(function() { $("#qloader").hide('slow'); });? and in html div with id qloader is defined with 100% width and height and spinner centered as the background, z-index above other: <div id="qloader" class="myLoader" >&nbsp;</div> Now, when page loads, ajax call is executed to get initial data, qloader div is brought up and it shows the spinner - animated, after ajax call finishes, qloader is hidden by ajaxStop. Next, when I click on a button (show data) to initiate another ajax call, ajaxStart is triggered, but it does not show qloader, it waits until ajaxStop is triggered and then in a blink of eye it shows qloader and hides it. I suspected that ajaxStart is not executed, so I put alert before $("#qloader").show(), then alert would be displayed and after that qloader WOULD be displayed BUT spinner animation would be suspended - no spinning, and after ajaxStop it would get hidden. Without alert in ajaxStart trigger, in subsequent ajax calls div is not shown until just before ajaxStop is triggered. It works fine for the first ajax call, but for subsequent ajax call triggered by click on form button it does not work. Any idea what is wrong with this setup?

The line is not executing at all, and hence the data is not being inserted into the database. What has gone wrong?? The 'values' are null.

I move around Sub DIV of 'rps_square selectee' from DIV2 to DIV1 and add and remove classes to be exactly same like this. The meaning is Queen Piece is moved from Div2 to Div1. <div id="div1" class="chess_square selectee"> <div id="sub1" class="chess_piece queen"></div> </div> <div id="div2" class="chess_square"> </div> <div id="div3" class="chess_square"> </div> However, the problem is jQuery doesn't update var $selectee = $('.rps_square.selectee');. Even though I changed class names, DIV1 is not clickable and DIV2 is still clickable. By the way, I've used jQuery UI selectable but doesn't refresh either.

  I'm checking to see if anyone has written an MVC extension for Html.ActionLink that you can pass in Post parameters like such: <% Html.ActionLink("Click me", "Index", "Home", new { MyRouteValue = "123" }, null, new { postParam1 = "a", postParam2 = "b" }); %> That would render the link like normal but having an onClick event that submits an also rendered form with an Action url for the Action, Controller, and Route Values with additional hidden inputs from the Post Parameters like such: <a href="#" onClick="$('#theform').submit(); return false;">Click me</a> <form id="theform" action="/Home/Index/123" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="postParam1" value="a"> <input type="hidden" name="postParam2" value="b"> </form> I'm looking to redirect users to various pages with potentially a lot of data. Not only from page to page, but from email to page also. This would be highly reusable and I think would clean up a lot of code, and would save a bunch of time writing this if its already floating around out there. • Getting an updated location in Android

  Hi, I'm using the code shown below to get an updated value for location every time a button is clicked. When my activity is resumed I get an update every second, so that when I call getLastKnownLocation I expect to have a location that have been updated in the last second. Is that the correct way to do that? I would expect the onLocationChanged event to be triggered every time I execute a 'geo fix' command (or max after 1s since I request update every 1s), but it's only triggered the first time. Why? Any help/suggestion welcome! • Giving writing permissions for IIS user at Windows 2003 Server

  I am running a website over Windows 2003 Server and IIS6 and I am having problems to write or delete files in some temporary folder obtaining this kind of warmings: Warning: unlink(C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\cakephp\app\tmp\cache\persistent\myapp_cake_core_cake_): Permission denied in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\cakephp\lib\Cake\Cache\Engine\FileEngine.php on line 254 I went to the tmp directory and at the properties I gave the IIS User the following permissions: Read & Execute List folder Contents Read And it still showing the same warnings. When I am on the properties window, if I click on Advanced the IIS username appears twice. One with Allow type and read & execute permissions and the other with Deny type and Special permissions. My question is: Should I give this user not only the Read & Execute permissions but also this ones?: Create Attributes Create Files/ Write Data Create Folders/ Append Data Delete Subfolders and Files Delete They are available to select if I Click on the edit button over the username. Wouldn't I be opening a security hole if I do this? Otherwise, how can I do to read and delete the files my website uses? Thanks.

  Still trying to get my head around JQuery and dynamically generated content. I have the following code that is dynamically generated with JQuery whenever a user clicks on an 'Add' button: <div id="practices_div" style="border-top: 1px dotted gray"> <br/> <a href="#" class="remove_link" rel="practices_div">Remove</a> ....content goes here </div> The JQuery code that dynamically loads the above content is as follows: $.ajax({ url: '/addAjax.html', success: function(response) { $('#container').append(response); } }); What I'm trying to do is when a user clicks on the Remove link, JQuery should hide and delete the dynamically generated content from the page. The code that does this is as follows: $('.remove_link').live('click', function() { if (confirm("Remove this item?")) { $('#practices_div').fadeOut('medium', function() { $(this).remove(); }); } return false; }); So, when the content is dynamically loaded via Ajax, and I click on the Remove link, the Confirmation dialogue box is displayed and if I confirm, nothing happens. For some reason, JQuery is not able find the dynamically generated #practices_div. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

• iPhone app, navigationcontroller not functioning?

  I have 4 tabs in a tab bar. In one of the tabs i want to use a navigation, i.e. when i click an item from the list it should go to some details page about it. I have the list page where i have the navigation bar and the list of items. I can scroll them, but when I click any of them the selection animation happens, console logs the true row value, it even prints log instructions from constructor of the Details page but I can not see the Details page showing up. • Correct answer will not output

  I made a program that returns the sum of all primes under 2 million. I really have no idea what's going on with this one, I get 142891895587 as my answer when the correct answer is 142913828922. It seems like its missing a few primes in there. I'm pretty sure the getPrime function works as it is supposed to. I used it a couple times before and worked correctly than. I dont know why this is happening since when hibernate is creating the artist object and checks for annotations, it should see the transient annotation present on the getTest() of artist method...and should not create a column in the database... Am I doing something wrong, or maybe it's a bug?

• NMEA data received but empty. Is there any secret?

  I have a tablet "Futjitsu Stylistic Q550". It's running on Windows 7 (not Phone!). It has a built-in GPS-receiver "Sierra Wireless". I need to parse NMEA data from COM-port. I can do it but it's always empty! Like "$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N*53". I've tried standing on open space a long time (so my Android device had located me via GPS for a long time) but NMEA data still empty. So I suppose that GPS is off. But I don't know how to figure it out. I've tried send to COM port $PARAM,START,0*61 but no changes. I've tried to insert SIM-card into the device, as it was suggested on one forum but result was the same. Well is it possible that GPS is idle or something or it's just not working? And if it is idle or off how can I enable it? And.. That looks strange but GSV enumerates satellites but everyone of them has still no data e.g.: $GPGSV,4,1,16,32,,,,11,,,,23,,,*78

  I have been struggling with a problem in Rails for a couple of days and still could not find the solution. Could you help me with that? Problem: I have a search box that puts a :search_string entry in the params structure. I use a form_tag for that and it works fine. <% form_tag :controller=> 'items', :action => 'find' do %> <%= text_field_tag :search_string, params[:search_string] %> <% end %> The problem is when I want to add and update other params key-value (in another view), for instance :start_date, to filter the search_string result. However when I try to click "March" button afterwards, the params[:start_date] is not updated. I definitely think this is a stupid newbie mistake, but I cannot figure out how to properly use the form_tag. Could you tell me if I am doing something work?   I'm working on dropdowns in IE6 (SELECT with OPTIONs as children). I'm experiencing the problem where, in IE6, dropdown menus are truncated to the width of the SELECT element. In other browsers, blur causes every OPTION to not be highlighted. Using JS, how can I de-highlight an option after the dropdown has lost focus.

• SIFR, JAVASCRIPT & PHP - How to apply SIFR to dynamically loaded content.

  Well here's the problem: I have a PHP index page which uses show/hide layers javascript. I am using the on menu.click function to show and hide content relevant to each menu. On.click all divs are hidden except the content for that menu item , which fades in. The content relating to each menu item are displayed within separate DIVS. The property is applied to all the text within all the divs. See: http://jobe-group.com/jobeco/uk/2010live/dynamic/content/index.php# The trouble is that SIFR only appears to be applied to the displayed on.load when the page is first loaded. When this is hidden and the other s shown through the "show" function they load in classic CSS fonts without the SIFR applied. Is this unavoidable with the SIFR setup. Or am I not calling the divs properly. I have set the SIFR to apply to the selector and indeed it works fine on the for the displayed on load. It doesn't work for the within other . In theory I would think its possible to load the SIFR on all divs on page.load even if those divs are presently visibility:hidden. What's the verdict on this? Hope someone can help. Cheers, John

• Link Button on asp.net user control not firing

  Hi I have a user control, which is added to another user control. The nested user control is built up of a gridview, an image button and a link button. The nested user control is added to the outer control as a collection object based upon the results bound to the gridview. The problem that I have is that my link button doesn't work. I click on it and the event doesn't fire. Even adding a break point was not reached. As the nested user control is added a number of times, I have set image button to have unique ids and also the link button. Whilst image button works correctly with its java script. The link button needs to fire an event in the code behind, but despite all my efforts, I can't make it work. I am adding the link button to the control dynamically.   I have a Microsoft Access database file connected to VB.NET. In the database table, I have a 'No.' and a 'Status' column. Then I have a textbox where I can input an integer. I also have a button, which will change the data cell in 'Status' where 'No.' = txtTitleNo.Text(), when I click it. Let's say I want the 'Status' cell to be changed to "Reserved". What codes should I put in the BtnReserve_Click? • My list item's child label elements disappear in IE on accordion menu opening

  I've got an app that's working pretty flawlessly in Chrome and FF, however, when I view it in IE, all is well until I click on a header element to activate it (jQuery accordion). What happens then is that I see a brief flash where the content is there, then suddenly the entire left column disappears. This column is generated by a floated label element with a class of ".left" as seen below... <ul class="menu collapsible"> <li class='expand sectionTitle'><a href='#'>General Settings</a> <ul class='acitem'> <li class="section"> <label class="left">This item if floated left with a defined width of 190px via css. This is the item that's disappearing after a brief display</label> <input class="input" value="input element here" /> <label class="description">This element has a margin-left:212px; set via css in order to be positioned to the right of the label element as if in an adjacent table cell. When I add a max-width property to this element, it disappears in IE too!</label> </li> </ul> </li> </ul> As you can see from the comments in the code above (for the two label elements) the description label disappears once I set a max-width on it (I don't have a max-width on the left label element, but it disappears nonetheless). The initial view of this UL menu is fine (note the expand class declaration which makes this part of the accordion open at startup. Its not until I click the "General Settings" to toggle it closed, then back open, that the left class elements disappear (and only in IE)

• MVC for a desktop application, connection a view/controller pair with another one

  Hello. I've had mostly experience with "server-side" mvc frameworks very popular in different languages like ASP.NET MVC or Zend Framework for php, Spring for Java etc. Some of them are also possible to use for desktop applications development but I never tried that. I fully understand that design patterns should not limit implementation, they should generally provide ideas and common rules that can be differently implemented. Now I'm playing with one of those mvc frameworks for usual Desktop Applications development (it does not have many tutorials or a decent quickstart) and I have some questions regarding to the mvc paradigm. Here is one of them: What are common ways to link different views / controllers? If I click a button, special controller for that button dispatches the event that is generated, does something with the model, changes view state. But what if I need to interact with another view? Like, when I click on a button, it changes a model, but also I need to open another window or change state of another window (hiding a button on another window let's say...), without changing actually the model. What are common ways here to address this? Should my first controller generate an event for the second controller (or second view)? Or should the second controller be handling events from first view? Some links or examples for any languages/frameworks would be really helpful, thanks!
