  • Ubuntu boots into tty1 after driver downgrade

    Earlier today I downgraded the driver for my nvidia 240 GT from version 310 to version 304 using ubuntus "additional drivers" utility. After the install I rebooted but instead of opening unity and allowing me to login it booted into tty1 instead. After using the "startx" command I got the message, "nvidia: API mismatch: the nvidia kernel module has version 310.14, but this nvidia driver component has version 304.43." What can I do to solve this? Edit: Solved my own problem by purging all nvidia packaged and reinstalling my drivers.

  • Transition from 2D to 3D Game development [closed]

    I have been working in the 2D world for a long time from manual blitting in windows to SDL to Python (pygame, pyopengl) and a bunch in between. Needless to say I have been programming for a while. So a while ago I started to program in OpenGL via C++ on my Mac. I then got a little intricate with my work after a while (3D models with skeleton structure and terrain development). After a long time of tinkering, I stopped due to the heavy work just to yield a low level understanding of how OpenGL works. Still interested in Graphics and Game Development I went on a search for a stable game engine with some features to grow on. Licence Requirement: Anything other than GPL (LGPL will do) OS Requirement: Mac & Windows Shader: GLSL or CG (GLSL preferred due to experience) Models: Any model structure with rigging (bone) support & animation I am looking at http://www.ogre3d.org/ currently and am starting to meddle around with some examples. However I am a little reluctant to spend a lot of time on it only to yield another dead end. So instead of falling down a spiraling black pit, I am posting my question to you guys to lead me in the right direction based on my requirements. How was your experience with the engine you recommend? Is it well documented? Does it have well documented examples? Any library requirements (Boost, libpng, etc)?

    I'm a web programmer, but I haven't found many opportunities to take advantage of a formal education in computer science. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but it seems to me like most of the web jobs I come across are CRUD, web forms, and data grids. For these jobs a formal CS background doesn't seem necessary, and you could do fine with O'Reilly cookbooks in jQuery, CSS 3, PHP, SQL, or ASP.NET MVC. What kinds of web developer jobs exist that really let you apply your computer science background? Do I need to branch out into other areas of programming to take full advantage of my degree?

  • unmet dependencies updating Intel graphics driver

    I am trying to update my graphics driver by running: sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel But I keep getting this message: Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: xserver-xorg-video-intel : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. When I run: sudo apt-get install -f Nothing happens, because the program doesn't even get half way to installing. I am running Lubuntu 12.04 on a HP Mini 110 netbook. I have tried changing to several different ppa's but that doesn't work. I want to update my driver so that my mouse stops flickering and ScummVM stops flickering every minute.

  • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

    I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

  • Texture displays on Android emulator but not on device

    I have written a simple UI which takes an image (256x256) and maps it to a rectangle. This works perfectly on the emulator however on the phone the texture does not show, I see only a white rectangle. I'm not really sure what else to try..

  • Metacity used with proprietary driver and proposed repository

    I enabled the proposed repository in a fresh install with the proprietary nvidia-173 driver. After the reboot, I noticed that minimizing and maximizing, there were none of the expected effect (using Ubuntu Classic, even with proprietary driver, Unity does not work - another issue). Furthermore I confirmed by trying to switch workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, and the square desktop wall was replaced by horizontally lined workspaces of Metacity. Of course, the upgraded Compiz could be responsible, but I can't figure out what to do - please advice. Additionally, if it's an issue with the softwares from proposed repo, how and what do I do to notify the developers of the issue?

  • Broadcom 4365 wireless driver on 12.04 with 3.4 / 3.5 kernel

    I used this package to install the driver on 3.2 Kernel and it was working perfectly. Unfortunately the system used to freeze randomly with 3.2 kernel so I installed 3.4 kernel, now there is no freezing, the only problem is that my wifi card is not working, I tried to re-install the package, but didn't work. I can see the driver in the "additional drivers" and it say that it is active, but when I execute iwconfig it doesn't show up. I've even tried ndiswraper and that didn't work either. my lspci: 01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4365 (rev 01)

  • Can't install wireless driver or get ubuntu to recognize ethernet cable

    I'm brand new to Ubuntu and I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to connect to the internet. When I try to activate the Broadcom STA wireless driver, it says "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log." So I try the steps detailed here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1967515&highlight=jockey Problem is, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet cable either. I tested the cable with another laptop and it works just fine. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • WinXp display driver incorrect to boot iso ubuntu 12.04

    I have Windows Xp on a HP Pavilion w/AMD Athlon 64 processor 3300+. I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 iso desktop. When trying to run Ubuntu, I get a line that says "sis 630 buss not detected. It continues and makes a blue screen, then says low graphics mode only and has a white screen. The HP has display adaptor sis 760, driver= 6.14.10.3671, 4/20/2005. I'm not familiar with ubuntu because I've never got it started as yet. Can the Ubuntu install process be changed to accept my sis 760 driver? I'm trying to make a Live CD(dvd) to run Ubuntu.

    I work on a team which employs many of the extreme programming practices. We've gone to great lengths to utilize paired programming as much as possible. Unfortunately the practice sometimes breaks down and becomes ineffective. In looking for ways to tweak our process I came across two articles describing parallel pair programming: Parallel Pair Programming Death of paired programming. Its 2008 move on to parallel pairing While these are good resources I wanted to read a bit more on the topic. As you can imagine Googling for variations on parallel pair programming nets mostly results which relate to parallel programming. What I'm after is additional discussion on the topic of parallel pair programming. Do additional references exist that my Google-fu is unable to discern? Has anyone used the practice and care to share here (thus creating a reference)?

    After creating a vhd and going through that process i'm unable to install win7 x64. I've went through various settings and trying to get it right. It'll boot the windows install but then indicate the following error (image included too): A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note if the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step. I've also set up my storage tree like so: Would anyone know what the issue could be? It's asking for cd/dvd device drivers and i'm unable to install.

  • Broadcom STA wireless driver frezees

    Upon updating my 10.10 netbook to 11.04 on the first startup it froze. I checked the forums and found that disabling wlan in BIOS fixes the problem so I did that and it worked, system was ok and it didn't freeze but then I had no wireless. I know that Broadcom STA driver is to blame cause I removed it from "additional drivers" and enabled back in bios wlan and everything worked fine (exept no wireless cause no driver is activated). Enabling Broadcom STA in the additional drivers again and restarting wireless was up and it found my network and connected to it but in a matter of seconds netbook froze. Can you please help me...

    Quick Background Since learning basic html 5 years ago, I've become completely obsessed with the technology, the logic, and the thrill of solving problems involved with building websites. I am still stuck at a thoroughly non-programming type job, but would really like to move into the field of web programming/design. I have no educational background in the field (was trained as a fine artist and tutor), but in the past few years have progressed fully self-taught (and self-motivated) from html to css to php, mysql, jquery, and am now building rich web applications. The Question How can I prove to a company that even though I have no education, I have a passion to learn whatever is thrown my way? ...That essentially I would come at every issue with not only knowledge, but with a passionate desire to solve it, whether that means tackling a new language or debugging code for hours at a time? p.s.     I have a Broadcom BCM4313 wireless driver. It worked fine under 11.04 and the upgrade to 11.10 also went smoothly. The 12.04 upgrade has broken the wireless connection. I've seen several posts about this and all presume you can activate the STA drivers, but that's where it fails on this machine. The log is in /var/log/jockey.log: WARNING: modinfo for module wl failed: ERROR: modinfo: could not find module wl WARNING: /sys/module/wl/drivers does not exist, cannot rebind wl driver DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled, bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted (repeat of last error several times) Any ideas how to proceed?

  • Setting up a LAMP VM server for Development and Testing?

    Info: I would like to set up a VM server on my local computer which will serve pages in the exact same way as my current hosting (but only to me on my local computer). I currently pay a big web hosting company to host my website & web store and they are doing a great job, but I would like to be able to work on my Web site and its corresponding MySQL DB, HTML, and PHP code without being at risk of messing something completely up on the live servers. My current plan of action: Set up a VM webserver with Debian, MySQL, PHP, Apache. Copy web store (PHP/HTML) code to VM server. Copy my current MySQL databases from my hosting provider and install on VM server. Modify and test new features on VM server. Upload MySQL DB and HTML/PHP code back to web host's server where it should work as before but with new modifications. Questions: Now I'm pretty sure I have steps one and two down correctly but I can't for the life of me figure out how to proceed next, so here are my questions. I have my /etc/host file set up so www.MySite.test redirects to the IP address of the local VM webserver. Once I import my PHP/HTML files and MySQL file whats the best way to navigate around the fact that all of my files and DBs will reference www.MySite.com. I can export my MySQL dbs but do I also have to export my MySQL users and passwords to access those db or are those coded into my html/php code?

  • Cannot make NVIDIA driver work with Ubuntu 12.10

    I seem to have a problem similar to many but I didn't manage to get it solved: have a Lenovo N581 with an NVIDIA GeForce 610M have just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits, + KDE and am trying to have my NVIDIA card work. Have tried all workarounds posted: purge nvidia, install kernel source/headers and then reinstall nvidia-current-updates (or just nvidia-current), do "sudo nvidia-xconfig". It does create a xorg.conf but does not much (no Module Section by the way). The result is that my system (jokey) tells me that the driver is there but not in use and I only get a 640x480 resolution. If I try to launch nvidia-settings it does indeed tell me that the nvidia driver is not used. I do all this under kde but I guess it does matter at this stage. Any hint of how to resolve this? I feel stuck and cannot use any of the acceleration which is partly why I got that laptop in the first place... thanks for any help/advise you may provide!

    Hello i installed the news ubuntu the other day and istalled all the drivers and then restart the laptop. then i get the login screen with no problem then when i login the black screen in about 10 mins a window popup saying that the application compiz has closed unexpectedly i relunch the app. and then it happens again. i have uninstalled nvidia driver then restarted and the OS works fine.. tryed older driver and still the same problem. anyone out there can help would be great.

    Title might be seem vague, so let me tell you a little bit history what i am trying to clarify question. I have been hired as a consultant for a corporate's small developement divison ( The company also owns a couple of software dev. companies) My ex manager runs a BI team, with reportes, analyts and developers. He asked me to evaluate overall design, software developement process and code quality . Here what i found, Lots of copy/paste code everywhere ( no reuse ) Even though they have everything TFS, VS Ultimate etc, No Build process , No Cruise Control.net / team city... No unit tests Web Pages with 3700 lines of code, Lots of huge functions ( which can be divided into smaller one's ) No naming convention both db and c# code No 3r party or open source project No IoC No Seperation Of Concerns No Code Quality Check ( NDepend or FxCope or nothing ) No Code Review No Communication within the team They claim they wrote an application framework ( 6 months 3 persons), but I would hardly call a framework ( of course no unit test, there are some but all commented out). Framework contains 14 projects but there are some projects with 1 file 20 lines of code . Honestly, what people are doing fixing bug all thr day( which will provide more bugs eventually), they are kind of isolated from community, some team members even dont know github or stackoverflow they probably went there with google but they dont know about it. So here is question, Is This list ok ? Or am i being picky? Since I dont have any grudge against them, I just want to be fair, honest and I would like to hear you suggestions, before I would submit this list. There were a couple of warnings at "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-legacy" with update-alternatives. But, at the last step I got "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". Unity does not start anymore. I only can login to Gnome. How can I get back to a working system?
