  • Software development company business plan

    I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question, so please forward me to the right place. I have about 10 years professional experience as software developer. Mostly on the Java platform doing server side programs. I have picked up a bit of Linux skills on the way as well. I know HTML and Javascript, so I can make a website that would not be too ugly, but I am not going to win any prizes with it. In fact I think I am pretty terrible in the user interface department. My initial plan is to do Android development. I read a few Android books and tried making a few apps. Since it is Java based I think I got the technical side down. Lately I have been thinking about iphone and Mac development, because of the relevant app store/development programs. The trouble is I don't know Objective C. As a side question, how long would it take me to become proficient in Objective C? Considering that I am working on my own and could hire somebody to help me for a short time for low wages if necessary what are my options? What are the pro and cons of the development programs app stores of Android and Apple? Which development/app stores are out there beside the ones I mentioned? Do you think it is necessary to find funds to get me started or should I just use my savings? If you have positive/negative experiences in a similar situations can you please share them?   • Android SDK not recognizing debug-able device.

    I'm new to Android development, and am attempting to run a test application on my actual device. I followed the instructions at http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/device.html (and related links), but the Android Debug Bridge (adb) doesn't recognize my connected device. Some quick background info, I'm running WinXP, developing with Eclipse, with a Motorola Droid running Android 2.1 as my physical device. An overview of the steps I've taken: Installed the Android SDK, downloading all necessary packages. Enabled USB Debugging on my device. Connected Device via USB, installing the driver from the SDK folder. I'll stop here (though I continued to setup my application to be debug-able in Eclipse), because I at this point I noticed a problem. Running "sdk\tools\adb devices" at this point (at least, by my understanding), should list my device as connected. However, running this yields only: List of devices attached My device recognizes that it's connected to a computer in debug mode, and my computer recognizes the device. However, I can't seem to get the sdk to recognize it. I'll leave out the steps I used to setup Eclipse for debugging on a device, as it doesn't seem relevant to the problem. I'll include them if requested. If anyone has any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate some assistance. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 Hp G72 Problem Installing proprietary wireless driver

    I have a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 installed on HP G72 machine. In order for my wireless to work I need the proprietary driver installed - Broadcom STA wireless driver. Trying to install it from the System Settings gives me the error: "Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log". So far I suspect the error to be caused by the bad "bcmwl-kernel-source" installation. What i tried: 1. remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" 2. install "bcmwl-kernel-source" installation through the terminal ends with "error code (1)".   • USB Storage Device Automount

    Under Ubuntu 10.04 one of the problems which appeared is that USB devices would no longer automatically mount when plugged in. Normally I would get a pop up message asking what application I wanted to open the newly plugged in device with, however now that doesn't happen. This happens regardless of the way the device is formatted (NTFS or FAT32) and all other USB devices (printer, keyboard and mouse) work perfectly. My current solution is the mount them manually using sudo mount dev/... /medai/... however to be honest I'm just getting tired of having to do this. I'm happy to post any extra information you are likely to need. I know there will be lots of places I could look to find out what's going wrong but I have no idea where to start really.

  • Algorithm development in jobs

    I have a mathematics background but also consider career in some form of software development. In particular I'm interested in finding out what sort of industries are most likely to have more algorithm development/mathematical and logical problem solving slant rather than pure application development etc. Obviously, I'm assuming that some subset of the canonical data structures and associated algorithms (trees, lists, hash tables, sets, maps with search, insert, traversals etc.) are mostly going to be present in software development. However, where am I more likely to encounter problems of more discrete maths nature (combinatorial, graph theory, sets, strings, ...) explicitly or more likely in disguise. Any pointers much appreciated (including possible open source projects that I could use for my further search for applications and also possibly contribute to).

  • Android device connects to my computer, but doesn't play audio over Bluetooth

    I turn on Bluetooth on both my devices and open up Music on my Android. I select a song to play, press the menu button, and tap "Via Bluetooth": I tap on my computer in the "Bluetooth Device Picker": Then it says, under the name of my computer: Connected to media audio Now I should technically be able to play music through my computer, since it "Just Worked" in Kubuntu with Blueman. But nope, something must be up with PulseAudio, because I hear no sound from my computer (I'm running Xubuntu 12.04). The reason I say this is that the devices list in Blueman shows indication of data transfer and it says it's connected, but in the PulseAudio Volume Control has no indication of my Bluetooth device (or Blueman) playing audio.

  • Installing driver for Ralink Realtek 8187 WiFi adapter

    I purchased a WiFi adapter online, and it came with an installation CD with drivers. I installed it just fine on Windows, and am now trying on Ubuntu 10.10. The CD came with the driver files for Linux as well, but I have no idea why they aren't working - my guess is that I don't properly understand what to do with them. I have uploaded the contents of the folder which came with the CD here. There is a README in there, but the instructions under the installation header didn't get me anywhere unfortunately.     Even though my current job is a little weird, I still consider myself to be a DBA. I didn’t start that way in IT. I came through support and into development. I loved development. There was a constant struggle to attempt to improve your code, your understanding, and, most importantly, the process of development itself. Development can be slow and tedious. Left alone, developers can simply disappear to build a project and not come back for two years, at which time they deliver it. But, maybe that software isn’t what you wanted, or it’s no longer needed, or who knows what. So developers are constantly attempting to improve their processes in order to deliver more relavent software quicker (something DBAs could learn about). I really admire it. One of the many processes that has come out of that constant striving is known as Agile. As the name implies, Agile development attempts to come up with a quick, fast turning, business aware, well, for want of a word, agile, process that is more responsive to the needs of the business. There are tons and tons of books and blogs and videos on the subject that can get you going. But, Agile isn’t easy (note, Easy is not part of the name). Agile processes can be hard. I’ve worked on multiple agile teams, some successful, some not. The two principal differences between the teams were their discipline and their knowledge of the process. Discipline, that comes from within. But knowledge, ah, well there I can help.     I am using "Apache Traffic Server" which may and it is better to use raw device like /dev/sdb without mounting it as a directory . So i should change the permission of /dev/sdb from root to user "trafficserver" to allow it formatting whole device as it likes . The problem starts after each reboot because /dev/sdb changes randomize so i should use UUID . But i can not change the permission of /dev/disk/by-uuid/48c2fac6-06eb-42c7-8b8a-3b83b781f28c . Is there a way to permanently change permission of disk drive by UUID ?

But I am thinking about other countries for offshore development. Personally I would like to have here some developers onshore, but the situation here is very hard and good developers are very hard to find. So we have to develop offshore. So my question is very simple. Do you have any experience with offshore and where would be a good place for development? By the way I am at the moment very interested in Russia and Ukraine. I am planning to buy a remote pointing (not only just pointing, we will be able to track the slides) device for my powerpoint presentations. I always use Ubuntu and powerpoint with libreoffice impress. I have been looking products on amazon, most of them are either for Windows or MAC. I am not sure whether they will work on Ubuntu.   • Need Windows XP VGA driver for i3 Haswell

    Background: I have recently upgraded my hardware because the previous Pentium system started failing to the point that it would not run long enough to boot. It was obviously a hardware fault, but I had no way of knowing whether it was in the motherboard, CPU or memory. Not all the components were now available, so I decided to replace all three. In order to get some benefit from the expenditure, I though I would put in faster components, and for future-proofing went for recently released ones: MSI Z87-G41-PCMate and Intel i3-4130 with 4400 HD graphics. The system performs excellently with Ubuntu 13.10, so I know there are no hardware problems, but I need to continue running XP because it runs several thousand pounds (UK) worth of software, which meets my needs more than adequately: in some cases there is no longer support for later Windows releases, and in most others an expensive and to me unnecessary upgrade is required. Problem: The motherboard specifications claim Windows XP support for the live driver update utility, which misled me into believing that XP drivers were available. Not true: Intel have apparently refused to provide XP drivers for Haswell chips. The update program runs on XP, but finds no suitable Intel drivers. The system is more or less running on the default fail-safe VGA driver, but DirectX will not load, which stops a number of my applications from running. I have been trawling the internet for a month now, but I have not found a graphics driver which will load successfully: all show "This device cannot start. (code 10)". I don't need HDMI support: my monitor is 1280x1024 and connected through the VGA port, so all I need is a driver which will handle this resolution well enough to support DirectX. Has anyone found a driver which will do this? Please don't reply with information found from internet searches, unless you have actually solved this problem: be assured that I have been all round the houses looking at solutions which others have reported as working, but none of them does for me. Incidentally, I did find an Intel HD sound driver which XP accepts (winxp_145111.exe from Intel), though without connecting to an HDMI port on a TV or sound system I have no idea if it works in practice. However, the graphics section of the same driver fails, like all the others I've tried.

This works fine if I blacklist the radeon kernel module via /etc/modprobe.d/.   • Device Manager - does USB listing look right?

    I obtained the drivers from the manufacturer for my HT-Link NEC USB 2.0 2-port Cardbus card. When I plugged in the card before I got the drivers, 3 new entries showed up in the Device Manager - two "NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller" and one "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller." With the card plugged in, I uninstalled those two drivers. I then removed the card. I copied the new drivers to c:\windows\system32\drivers and the .inf file to c:\windows\inf. I also copied the drivers & inf to a new directory called c:\windows\drivers\ousb2. I reinserted the card. Windows automatically installed the same drivers as before. I selected 'update driver' on the "NEC PCI to USB..." entry and didn't see any other options. I then selected 'have disk' and pointed to c:\windows\drivers\ousb2 and got a message "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." I then selected 'update driver' on the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB...," and manually selected "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Windows then automatically found a USB root hub, and I manually selected "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Now there are two sections in the Device Manager titled "Universal Serial Bus controllers." I plugged in my external USB hard disk adapter, and "USB Mass Storage Device" was added to the first set. (I unplugged the hard disk adapter first...) The hard disk adapter still doesn't work in that Cardbus card with the new drivers. I don't think the above looks right - a second set of USB controllers listed in the Device Manager, and the NEC entries still in the first set, and the the USB mass storage device still in the first set. Any help appreciated. (Windows XP PRO SP3 w/all current updates.)

    consider you are creating a raid5 device with three drives. mdadm --create /dev/md0 --leve=5 --raid-disk=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 After issuing this command , I can see the progress of md device creating using cat /proc/mdstat. During the progress ITSELF, can I create a file ssytem partition say ext2 on md0 device like: mkfs.ext2 /dev/md0. Actually I am able to create this and want to confirm whether doing this before 100% completion of md device creation is CORRECT?

    Hi there! I am a beginner at DDK/WDM driver developing field. I have a task which involves porting a virtual device driver from x86 to x64 (intel). I got the source code, I modified it a bit and compiled it succesfuly with DDK (build environments). But when I tried to load it on a ia64 Windows7 machine it didn't want to load. Then I tried some simple examples of device drivers from --http://www.codeproject.com/KB/system/driverdev.aspx (I put '--' to be able to post the hyperlink) and from other links but still the same problem. I hear on a forum that some libraries that you use to link are not compatible with the new machines and suggested to link to another similar libraries...but still didn't worked. When I build I use "-cefw" command line parameters as suggested. I do not have an *.inf file asociated but I'm copying it in system32/drivers and I'm using WinObj to see if next restart it's loaded into the memory. I also tried this program ( http://www.codeproject.com/KB/system/tdriver.aspx ) to load the driver into the memory but still didn't worked for me. Please please help me...I'm stuck on this and my deadline already passed. I feel I'driving nuts in here trying to discover what am I doing wrong.
