How can a function generate the right index from any string? Are the indexes integers in reality too? If yes, how can the function output 1 for John Smith, 2 for Lisa Smith, etc.?

    I've looked into some questions here where the "best" programming books are listed and then thought why there isn't a question concerning speeches yet. I think that speeches or presentations from developers or even creators of programming languages which were or are heavily used at some point are particulary interesting. One of my favorite speeches was recommended to me by someone here on SO: The future of C# I also like Guido van Rossum's speeches but he sometimes seems pretty nervous. Another in my opinion good presentation would be the Google tech talk about Go. Which (recorded) programming presentations/speeches are worth watching? edit: Made this a community wiki as the answer would probably be a pretty long list.

    I'm OCaml newbie and I'm trying to write a simple OCaml-like grammar, and I can't figure this out. My grammar allows something like this: let sub = fun x -> fun y -> x - y;; However, if I want to use the function so defined, I can write: (sub 7) 3 but I can't write sub 7 3, which really bugs me. For some reason, it gets interpreted as if I wrote sub (7 3) (which would treat 7 as a function with argument 3).   • Workaround for abstract attributes in Java

    In Scala I would write an abstract class with an abstract attribute path: abstract class Base { val path: String } class Sub extends Base { override val path = "/demo/" } Java doesn't know abstract attributes and I wonder what would be the best way to work around this limitation. My ideas: a) constructor parameter abstract class Base { protected String path; protected Base(String path) { this.path = path; } } class Sub extends Base { public Sub() { super("/demo/"); } } b) abstract method abstract class Base { // could be an interface too abstract String getPath(); } class Sub extends Base { public String getPath() { return "/demo/"; } } Which one do you like better? Other ideas? I tend to use the constructor since the path value should not be computed at runtime.

  • What features of interpreted languages can a compiled one not have?

    Interpreted languages are usually more high-level and therefore have features as dynamic typing (including creating new variables dynamically without declaration), the infamous eval and many many other features that make a programmer's life easier - but why can't compiled languages have these as well? I don't mean languages like Java that run on a VM, but those that compile to binary like C(++). I'm not going to make a list now but if you are going to ask which features I mean, please look into what PHP, Python, Ruby etc. have to offer. Which common features of interpreted languages can't/don't/do exist in compiled languages? Why?

    Hello I've been trying several things from Google to POST data to a web server, but none of them work: I'm still stuck at how to convert the variables into the request, considering that the second variable is an SQL query so it has spaces. Does someone know the correct way to use a WebClient to POST data? I'd rather use WebClient because it requires less code than HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse. Here, we are overriding printVal() method, so that is understandable that it is accessing child class method only. But I could not understand why it's accessing the value of x from Super class...     I'm wondering if there is another way of getting a sub string without allocating memory. To be more specific, I have a string as: const char *str = "9|0\" 940 Hello"; Currently I'm getting the 940, which is the sub-string I want as, char *a = strstr(str,"9|0\" "); char *b = substr(a+5, 0, 3); // gives me the 940 Where substr is my sub string procedure. The thing is that I don't want to allocate memory for this by calling the sub string procedure. Is there a much easier way?, perhaps by doing some string manipulation and not alloc mem. I'll appreciate any feedback.

    I am trying to do a vertical dropdown menu. This is my code .menu li:hover>ul{ position:absolute; display:inline; left:120px; top:100px;} I use position: Absolute to remove the sub-menu from the table, once the menu gets hovered. It appears that, if I do not indicate top or left property. The sub-menu will displayed relatively. Now I need to adjust the position relatively but seems that only the left property works. So my sub-menu left position is 120px relatively away from its original position. But the top is 100px away from the top of the window, rather then to the original position. How do I move the list up relative to it original position? I cant use position:relative because I need the sub-menu to be remove from the table.

    I have a simple Windows Form that hosts property controls at runtime. To keep the window and its contents alive rather than killing it by handling the FormClosing event, cancel the event and simply hide the form. That's fine but at close of the application I need to actually close the window. I implemented the below but it feels kludgey. Is there a simpler, more clever way to handle this situation? (The form's controller calls KillForm explicitly after it receives a closing event from the main window.)   • Generic Lists copying references rather than creating a copiedList

    I was developing a small function when trying to run an enumerator across a list and then carry out some action. (Below is an idea of what I was trying to do. When trying to remove I got a "Collection cannot be modified" which after I had actually woken up I realised that tempList must have just been assigned myLists reference rather than a copy of myLists. After that I tried to find a way to say tempList = myList.copy However nothing seems to exist?? I ended up writing a small for loop that then just added each item from myLsit into tempList but I would have thought there would have been another mechanism (like clone??)     I've got my interpreter up and running - quite bug-free and stable for now - now I want to add some visual options to my language to play around. What is a good GUI library easy to use and mainly easy to embed and "link" to my programming language? What general rules do I have to follow? I'm currently on XP with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.
