• One NIC going to sleep on Centos system

  I have two Dell boxes with two ethernet ports a piece. I have a cable directly connecting two of these ports, creating a tiny LAN with 10.3.3.x addresses. The other port on each box is hooked up to a switch and has a DHCP-supplied address to talk to the outside world. I've noticed that when scp'ing large files from one box to the other over the private LAN, the transfers sometimes stall. It appears that any other network activity on either box will cause the transfer to resume. Wake-on-LAN is disabled on all interfaces according to ethtool. What else could be causing these stalled transfers?

• Can I use an nVidia Geforce 9600GT for triple-monitor?

  My work PC has (as you can guess from the title) a single Geforce 9600GT card. According to the spec page for this card, both DVI ports are Dual-Link DVI. Both are currently in use on Dell 19" 1280x1024 screens. I'm running Windows 7, with Aero enabled, for what that's worth. What I'm wondering is if I can use a standard DVI splitter cable to drive a third screen from one of the ports -- specifically a Samsung 22" 1680x1050. I'm really outgrowing the two-screen setup, and am strongly considering bringing in my home monitor (which is almost never used) to bolster my usable space. If I can't, then my alternative is to replace one of these Dells with that Samsung, to give me at least a "little" more space. (Before you ask, there's probably no chance I can get my company to spring for a second video card and third monitor. Even if I could, it would not be politically expedient, as a number of my other coworkers are already pretty jealous at my setup.)

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? • Problem with several USB devices on Windows XP. How to diagnose USB device?

  Hello All, Recently I've bought some electronic devices (like e.g. Sony Ebook reader PRS-600 or HP PDA IPaq) which are connected to PC using USB ports. These devices have own batteries and they are recharged using USB. However, I am experiencing a problem with Ebook Reader and the similiar thing happens with my PDA (but in this case it's more rare). Sometimes, I am unable to make it start recharging, when it's connected to USB port. The LCD diode on my Reader lights up and the icon in the system tray appears. They both indicate that the device has been connected. However, the device should start recharching and it should appear on Windows XP as a 'explorable' device (just like pendrive it offers some HDDs). None of these happens:( This problem appears on two PCs - desktop and laptop. Both have Windows XP SP3 installed. And what's interesting and surprising to me is the fact that these devices sometimes work without any problems. I mean, I just plug them in and they work properly. Besides that, there are some computers (I have tested a variety of possible conditions) on which the problem does not appear! I am confused and, on the other hand, determined to find out what is the real cause of such strange behavior. Maybe I'm wrong but I always assumed that I'm using deterministic machines, but the described situation makes me feel like I was dreaming:) And that's why I'm asking you here. Are there any tools that could help me diagnose USB ports? Or maybe anyone knows the solution? I have a lot experience with low level programming (mostly from the times of MS-DOS applications), but I'm not an expert when it comes to WinXP technology. If this was a problem with network connection, I would know what to do - I know how to track network traffic, but with USB ports I feel powerless. I have a feeling that the problem may lie in a way WinXP handles USB devices. Personally, I hate auto-discovery and P'n'P features available in Windows. I know that some of may suggest to move to Linux or other *Nix system. Unfortunately, I have to use WinXP in my professional life, so it's rather impossible. Besides that, I don't consider XP as a total disaster. Any help from you will be appreciated!

  i've setup a 4-drive RAID-10 array using mdadm-managed, software-raid on an x86_64 box. it'd up & running and works as expected, cat /proc/mdstat md127 : active raid10 sdc2[2] sdd2[3] sda2[0] sdb2[1] 1951397888 blocks super 1.2 512K chunks 2 far-copies [4/4] [UUUU] bitmap: 9/466 pages [36KB], 2048KB chunk atm the four SATA drives are physically plugged into the motherboard's 1st four SATA ports. i'd like to gather the necessary/complete info for catastrophic recovery. reading starting here, http://neil.brown.name/blog, and the mailing list, i'm not yet completely confident i have it right. i understand 'drive order matters'. is that logical, &/or physical order that matters? if i unplugged the four drives in this array, and plugged them each back into different ports on the motherboard or a pci card, as long as i've changed nothing in software config, will the array correctly auto-re-assemble?

  In the Outbound Rules, I set up a rule to allow outbound connection from port 26. But, it doesn't work. However, if I allow "all port" for this rule, this will work, but then all ports will be allowed too. What is the reason? Is there any conflicting rule? I need to fix this as soon as possible. -Edit to add : I'm trying to allow email access to mail server outside (port 26). The thing is, even if I telnet using port 26, it will not work, unless I allow "all ports". Specific port will not do.

  I have a PC behind NAT. I want to host a web server on it which is accessible from the internet. I cannot open any blocked ports nor do i have admin rights on the computer. But it has a teamviewer client running on it 24*7 to which i do have access(no vpn installed). I can accesss this client from anywhere using teamviewer. I want to know if somehow i can use teamviewer to get a ip/hostname that is accessible from the internet and host a webserver. Also is it possible to get an ip if i get admin access but without opening ports.

• Suggestions on providing HA access to an external (fibre) RAID subsystem

  We are looking at upgrading our storage capacity with an external RAID subsystem that has redundant (2) fibre controllers, each controller has 4 x 8 Gbps fibre ports. I would like to make access to this storage system occur via HA Linux. Ideally I would connect 2 fibre ports from each controller into each Linux server, and then export either NFS or iSCSI via a 10 Gbe interface. I have seen plenty of references to DRBD, however all of those references tend to use block storage that is solely attached to each machine, rather than having a shared block storage device, so I am unsure if DRBD could (or should) be used in this case. Ideas?

  Hallo, for a rack containing a smaller nubmer of servers (5 at the moment, going to stay in this area), I look to replace the currently aging 100mbit switch with a 1gb switch. This is for the backend between the servers. I expect some ISCIS traffic there ,so a 10gbit option would be nice (preferably for two ports, as extension modules). I dont need management, this is a pure backend of an internal cluster. I do VLAN, but there is no sensible management the switch can do there. I wuold like: * 1he only, obviously * preferable limited moving parts. * Low price ;) * Enough power to run at least half the ports in full speed at the same time. Anyone any recommendations?

  We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

• Adding a new USB port inside a Macbook Pro

  I have a USB Dongle that I'd like to put inside my Macbook Pro. I have already found a spot that will fit the dongle. The next question is splicing one of the USB ports and connecting it to the dongle. Here's a photograph of the inside of my Macbook Pro, showing the USB ports and a little gray plastic divider with four holes in it above each port. http://min.us/mvoQEem My question: Does anyone know what is inside these holes? Presumably each one is a pin for the USB port, right? Can I just stick a wire in there, giving me 4 pins, plus the fifth attached to the metal outside the port? • All network devices freezing when Airport Extreme Base Station is connected. Any ideas?

  I've been troubleshooting this issue for a while, and through a series of events have it narrowed down to my airport extreme base station. I like this router, since I'm able to connect to IPV6 sites without any insane configuration (my alternate router is too old and doesn't support v6). My question is: Has anyone else had this issue, if so how is it resolved? If not, can you recommend a good IPv6 router? Here is how I came to the conclusion that it is the router: Devices: XBOX 360, HTC Incredible, Home-Built machine running FreeBSD, Home-Built machine running Ubuntu 10.04. 1.) Noticed freezing on Ubuntu Box. 2.) Noticed freezing on XBOX360 3.) Noticed freezing on HTC Incredible (only when connected to my network wirelessly). The above all happened at random times throughout the past few weeks. Over the last few days, I was playing XBOX and noticed that the XBOX and Ubuntu machines both froze. I picked up my phone, and it was also frozen. I reset all devices, power-cycled my router, and all was fine again. About two hours later, it happened again (I was playing Forza III, the XBOX froze; I went to the Ubuntu box and it was frozen; unfortunately, the HTC phone was not connected wirelessly, and the FreeBSD box was turned off). I can't even begin to imaging what a router could be doing to freeze devices with such differing hardware/software/OS, and I feel absurd for coming to this conclusion, but I have nothing else. I hooked up my archaic Netgear router, and have had no problems since. :(

• Windows 7 VPN wont allow FTP, route FTP traffic through local network

  I use a VPN on my windows 7 PC for privacy and currently route all my traffic through the VPN. This arrangement is fine and its plenty fast. Unfortunately the VPN does not allow any FTP traffic so when I am updating websites I have to disconnect the VPN and work through my local connection. This is annoying and cumbersome. I have read a little about split tunnelling but this is not quite what I need, and it often talks about 'internet' traffic which is not specific to certain IPs or ports. Is it possible to route traffic on certain ports through the local connection, or is it possible to route traffic on certain IPs through the local connection using stuff built into windows 7..? • Multiple monitors on ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR2 (Brand: Sapphire)

  From other posts here, I understand that it might be possible to use up to 3 monitors on this card. My understanding (from the other posts here as well) is that since I have a HDMI output, I do not have a 'DisplayPort', right ? Mine has indeed 3 ports: DVI, HDMI and VGA. Can I have dual-monitor using both the HDMI and DVI ports simulataneously (I am not looking for Eyefinity, but simply extended desktop). Currently I am using dual monitor with DVI and VGA but will replace my 17 inches next week with a new (larger) one that has both VGA and DVI, so I intend to use both monitors connected digitally. I intend to purchase a cable ''HDMI to DVI''(MM) to do so on the second monitor. Optimal resolution on the one I intend to keep (22 inches) : 1680 x 1050, primary monitor. New one (24 inches) has an optimal resolution of 1920 x 1080. Am I running for problems ? Thanks, Rob

• Best practice for ONLY allowing MySQL access to a server?

  Here's the use case: I have a SaaS system that was built (dev environment) on a single box. I've moved everything to a cloud environment running Ubuntu 10.10. One server runs the application, the other runs the database. The basic idea is that the server that runs the database should only be accessible by the application and the administrator's machine, who both have correct RSA keys. My question: Would it be better practice to use a firewall to block access to ALL ports except MySQL, or skip firewall / iptables and just disable all other services / ports completely? Furthermore, should I run MySQL on a non-standard port? This database will hold quite sensitive information and I want to make sure I'm doing everything possible to properly safeguard it.   I have some questions about raid card. Use LSI MegaRAID® SAS 9260-8i raid card as a example. There is only two connection ports on the raid card, and they provide two cables that can connect 8 SAS/SATA storages. The document say it can connect "Maximum 32 drives per controller", I want to know how can I connect more than 8 hard disks with this card. Is that they say "Eight internal SATA+SAS ports" means they provide two cables which can connect 8 hard drives, but you can use other way to connect Maximum 32 drives? The other question. I see host bus adapter has raid integrated , so what is the difference between host bus adapter and raid card. Are they the same? I also know is SAS/SATA Expander's function only to connect more hard drives? Thanks in advance.

• How does Apache handle port forwarding?

  I setup a localhost portforwarding configuration in the coLinux .conf file, forwarding port 8090 to port 80 in the VM. When http://localhost:8090 is entered in the browser, I get the correct response from nginx, but with Apache the response get the error /htdocs not found in the log. However if I do a local port forwarding from 8090 to port 80 via SSH Apache responds fine. Is there something about the way Apache handles the port redirection that causes it to fail? PS, For those unfamiliar with coLinux it allows localhost connections to get to the VM by forwarding localhost ports on the Windows host to ports on the VM, as the 10.x.x.x IP it not accessible from the Windows host.

• Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

  We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)?   I've got Lenovo W500 with D-SUB and DVI ports. Most of the time I work with a docking station which has D-SUB and DVI ports, as well. I used to have laptop + 22" monitor (DVI) configuration. Now I've got laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB). I was trying to configure everythin but with no success. I've got ATI V5700 in my laptop. And my ATI CCC allows me to only have one external monitor attached at the time. :( Is there any workaround to this situation? I'd like to have the configuration I've just descripted: laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB).

• USB keyboard not recognized by motherboard with only a legacy PS/2 header

  I've bought a D945GSEJT Atom motheboard that has three usb ports available and no PS/2 connector, just a PS/2 header. I have a PS/2 keyboard with a PS/2 to USB adapter and connected it to a USB port. I tried all three USB ports. The problem is that the board seems to not recognize my keyboard. None of the keys I press are detected by the system. I've read that maybe I could try to change BIOS USB settings to solve this detection problem. But how can I do it if I can't type anything? Is there any other option other than buying a PS/2 adapter and plug it to the PS/2 header?

• Recurring network issues the same time every day.

  Something has been happening on my company's network at 9:30 every day. I'm not the sysadmin but he's not a ServerFault guy so I'm not privy to every aspect of the network but I can ask questions if follow up is needed. The symptoms are the following : Sluggish network and download speed (I don't notice it, but others do) 3Com phones start ringing without having people on the other end. We've got the following ports exposed to the public for a web server, a few other ports for communicating with our clients for tech support and a VPN. We've got a Cisco ASA blocking everything else. We've got a smallish network (less than 50 computers/vms on at any time). An Active Directory server and a few VM servers. We host our own mail server too. I'm thinking the problem is internal, but what's a good way to figure out where it's coming from?
