• VMWARE V2V migration without shared storage

  I would like to do the following: Take Physical box running w2k8r2 and Sql2008R2 and do a P2V on it to a 4.1 Enterprise licensed cluster. --no worries here, I can do that part-- Take the existing physical box that is freed up and install vmware hypervisor 5.0 on it. --again I can do this part-- Do a v2v migration of the VM created in step #1 above from the Enterprise 4.1 Cluster to the standalone host. They are NOT using shared storage. Step #3 is where I'm confused as to what my best option is. I found an article online talking about using Veeam FastSCP and just shutting down the vm on the cluster, removing it from inventory, copying the files over to the new host and then adding it to inventory. Is that the best way to accomplish this?

  I have a small domain of users that I just migrated from a linux domain running open-ldap. Our new servers are running Windows 2008 Standard. I've installed Active Directory and everything is working perfectly... except that the initial user privileges is pretty restrictive and I need to loosen it up a bit. For example once they login to their workstations, they can create new files and folders but can not modify existing files or start. I basically want to open it all up except for software installations. Can someone please help with with this migration headache?

• Outlook mail/calendar items give errors after server migration

  Last Friday our Exchange server was migrated, by our external system administrator, to a new server, with a new server name. Since then we have problems with the calendar/mail items that were created/sent/received on the old server: Reply to mails get bounced if we use auto complete in the To field. If we cancel auto complete and manually enter the (same) e-mail address then there's no problem. Our system administrator says this is because auto complete fills in the old server name (???). Calendar items created on the old server cannot be edited (without an error) and must be recreated if we want to change them. Our system administrator says these problems are normal with a server migration. I cannot believe this. There must be a better way. Am I right?

  I'm looking for a tool to sync my bookmarks locally, without uploading them to any website (like xmarks does.) Example: i currently use 1Password to sync my logins/passwords. They are not uploaded to any website. The program simply syncs between devices (Mac OSX, iPad, Windows) on the local network, without the need of any remote server/database. Now i'm looking for a tool that does (kind of) the same thing, for bookmarks.

• Sun Tool-less Slide Rails Removal for X4150

  I have some tool-less slide rails for some 1ru x4150 sun servers. I can't seem to see how to remove them. Sun in their wisdom did not include this seemingly important information in their documentation; they simply (possibly with a cheeky smile) say to... "Refer to the (long since lost) installation card included with the rackmount kit for instructions on attaching tool-less slide-rail assemblies to the rack." So if anyone knows please let me know.

  I've started using AWS Glacier, and noticed that it hashes the files using an algorithm called SHA-256 Tree Hash. To my surprise, this algorithm is different from SHA-256, so I can't use the tools I'm used to, to compare hashes and verify file integrity. Do you know a Windows tool, if possible integrated in the context menu, to compute the SHA-256 Tree Hash of a file? I'd also accept a Linux command-line tool, as a second choice :-)

• Photoshop CS6 - spacebar shortcut for hand tool has stopped working

  In Photoshop CS6, the default behavior of depressing the spacebar as a shortcut for the Hand tool was working as expected, then stopped for no apparent reason. I have rebooted, closed browsers, shut down all other applications and deleted preferences and the problem persists. The spacebar works properly elsewhere, including Photoshop CS4. Is there a keyboard shortcut setting I'm missing (I've checked Edit - Keyboard Shortcuts and can find nothing for the spacebar, and can not add it to the Hand tool). This is on OSX Lion 10.7.4

• GUI tool to extract iso file contents on Linux (KDE)

  I have an ISO CD image file and want to extract it's contents to a folder. I know there are ways to mount the image and stuff, but it's complicated. I'm looking for a GUI tool to open up the contets and extract needed files. On windows I would use WinRar to do this. K3B only allows me to burn the stuff, Arch does not work with ISO files :( Is there a similar tool on Linux, preferably from KDE world?

Esentially, what I want is to compare 2 big directory trees in 2 machines. I'm planning to take the outputs of running this tool in both, and diffing them to make sure they're identical.   I recently had a fun time trying to debug a permission issue I ran into using TFS 2010’s TfsConfig. Update 5th March 2010 – In its style of true excellence my company has added rant to its “Suggestions for Better TFS”. <rant> I was trying to run the TfsConfig tool and I kept getting the message: “TF55038: You don't have sufficient privileges to run this tool. Contact your Team Foundation system administrator." This message made me think that it was something to do with the Install permissions as it is always recommended to use a single account to do every install of TFS. I did not install the original TFS on our network and my account was not used to do the TFS2010 install. But I did do the upgrade from 2010 beta 2 to 2010 RC with my current account. So I proceeded to do some checking: Am I in the administrators group on the server? Figure: Yes, I am in the administrators group on the server Am I in the Administration Console users list? Figure: Yes, I am in the Administration Console users list Have I reapplied the permissions in the Administration Console users list ticking all the options? Figure: Make sure you check all of the boxed if you want to have all the admin options Figure: Yes, I have made sure that all my options are correct. Am I in the Team Foundation administrators group? Figure: Yes, I am in the Team Foundation Administrators group Is my account explicitly SysAdmin on the Database server? Figure: Yes, I do have explicit SysAdmin on the database Can you guess what the problem was? The command line window was not running as the administrator! As with most other applications there should be an explicit error message that states: "You are not currently running in administrator mode; please restart the command line with elevated privileges!" • Migrating Windows 2003 File Server Cluster to Windows 2008 R2 Standalone?

  We have a situation where we have an aging Windows 2003 File Server Cluster that we'd like to move to a standalone Windows Server 2008 R2 VM that resides in our Hyper-V R2 installation. We see no need to keep the Clustering as Hyper-V is now providing our Failover/Redundancy. Usually, in a standalone file server migration we migrate the data, preserving NTFS permissions and then export the sharing permissions from the registry and import them on the new server. This does not appear possible in this instance, as the 2003 cluster stores the sharing permissions quite differently. My question is, how would one perform this type of migration? Is it even possible? My current lead is the File Server Migration Toolkit, however I can find no information on the net about migrating from cluster to standalone, only the opposite. Please help. UPDATE: We ended up getting the data copied over (permissions intact), but had to recreate the shares manually by hand. It was a bit of a pain but it did in the end work out.

  Hello, Microsoft finally released the Team Foundation Service in late October 2012 after its long time in the preview phase. I was already using the TFS Preview which was free but I was happy to see Microsoft releasing the Team Foundation Service also FREE for upto 5 users. Isn't that great news? I know there are bunch of other free source control repositories (Github, Bitbucket, SVN etc.) out there but I somehow like TFS better. Also the other good thing about the final release was that I didn’t had to do any kind of migration of my code from preview to final release version. Just changed the TFS connection URL and it worked like a charm. Anyways, if you are a startup with small team and need some awesome Source Control along with all the good Project Management, Continuous Integration (Build, Test, Deploy), Team Collaboration, Agile/Scrum planning etc. features than Team Foundation Service is your answer. Microsoft has not yet released their pricing for more than 5 users and will be releasing it sometime in early 2013. What if as of now you have a team more than 5 users and you want to use Team Foundation Service, the good news is you can use it for FREE but when they release the final pricing, you will have to transition to the paid plan. Lot of story, getting to the point, connecting to Team Foundation Service with Visual Studio 2012 is straight forward and would work out of the box but it wont for previous versions of Visual Studio. You will have to upgrade to the latest service pack first and than install the forward compatibility pack. (1st : Service Packs & 2nd: Forward Compatibility packs) For Visual Studio 2010: Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2010 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 and Team Foundation Service.         For Visual Studio 2008: Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2008 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 & Team Foundation Service. Restart your system. Visual Studio 2008 will not work if you only put https://xxx.visualstudio.com. You will have to put your collection name too as shown below.       By the way, it doesn’t matter if you are an Apple Application Developer or Android App Developer, you can still use Team Foundation Service as your source control. • 2008R2 Standard and Hyper-V and Ram Usage (Usable vs Available)

  A new server was purchased for our development team to start utilizing the full feature set of TFS, namely Lab Management. Because of the need for Lab Management we bought a fairly beefy machine to handle this task and to also act as a build machine. I have been tasked to setup additional features TFS on this machine starting out with a build controller and eventually going towards a full out Lab Management setup using Hyper-V. My question: Upon initially logging I noticed that Windows is registering 64gb but only 32gb available. I know this is a limitation because of licencing since only Standard Edition is installed. Since Hyper-V is another layer that handles the virtualization of guest OS's is Hyper-V able to access this memory? Or is Hyper-V memory usage also limited by 2008 R2 Standard? If Hyper-V can somehow access this memory, is this how it should be setup? Or should the host 2008R2 Standard be upgraded to Enterprise so the Host can utilize the full 64gb? Before I go hog wild and using TFS I wanted to ask some experts so I don't need to reinstall the OS down the road to utilize the additional 32gb. Thanks for any help or links you can share.
