  Extract data from specific range of cells(always the same cells) in multiple worksheet in multiple files. 1 file=1 day. I have 6 technicians each day of the week, Monday thru Friday. So, 5 files with 6 worksheets. I have entered specific info in specific cells of every work sheet. The range is constant(the same address in EVERY worksheet in every file.) So, I need a formula to extract and calculate the data in the given range and dump it into another spreadsheet. I can forward an example a file if it will help anyone to answer my question. • Building optimal custom machine for Sql Server

  Getting the hardware in the mail any day. Hardware related to my question: x10 15.5k RPM SAS Segate Cheetah's x2 Adaptec 5405 PCIe Raid cards Motherboard has integrated SAS raid. Was thinking I would build 2 RAID 10 arrays one for data and one for logs The remaining 2 drives a RAID 0 for TempDB Will probably throw in a drive for OS. Does putting the Sql Server application / exe's on a raid make a difference and is there any impact of leaving the OS on a relatively slow disk compared to the raid arrays? I have 5/6 DBs combined < 50 gigs. With a relatively good / constant load. Estimating 60-7% reads vs writes. Planning on using log shipping as well if that matters. Any advice or suggestions?

  I'm attempting to setup share permissions on a Brazilian server and wish to give Everyone read only access. However, the server's language is Brazilian (Portuguese), and it looks like the security groups' names have been translated. Does anyone know what this group is called in Portuguese? Is there an easy way to access this group which is not language sensitive (e.g. some constant value, such as the SID (S-1-1-0) which can always be used, regardless of locale settings)? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330. NB: I tried using this SID, but on its own it did not work - though perhaps I need to format it in some way?

  I have a list of text entries and I want to count how often each entry appears in the list. e.g. Berlin Paris London London Paris Paris Paris The result would be Berlin 1 Paris 4 London 2 This result easy do to achieve with an pivot table in MS Excel (see: Count Items in Excel). My data not in spreadsheet in Excel but in a MS Access database table. So in order to avoid constant switching between Access and Excel and I would like to handle everything in Access (either Access 2007 or 2010). I know there are pivot tables in Access and I know how to display one, but I was unable to find out how to count the number of occurrences. Thank you!

• SNMP - Value of CPU processor load not reflecting reality

  Trying to plot CPU load on my server, with the following hardware: ProLiant DL360p Gen8 (same behavior on ProLiant DL360 G7). The machine is running VMWare ESXi5.1 To create a CPU spike I run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null, and I know the CPU is overloaded, because I can see a correlating spike in the graphs displayed on vCenter. However, running this snmpwalk: snmpwalk -v 1 -c ******** 192.168.MY_IP 1.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2 Shows the following results: iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.1 = INTEGER: 3 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.2 = INTEGER: 2 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.3 = INTEGER: 2 iso.3.6.1.2.1.25.3.3.1.2.4 = INTEGER: 3 Am I not looking into the right MIB? Should I be multiplying these by a constant? By the way, using HP Agentless Monitoring I was able to get some cpu stats, but not what I'm looking for, at least nothing I could find wading through these MIBs.

• SBS 2008 DNS issues in BPA

  I'm gettng constant Critical Issue events in the Small Business Server Best Practices Analyser & resulting SBS Console reports that begin "The DNS client is not configured to point only to the internal IP address of the server.". When I check the DNS Manager, there are two separate IPs listed, one ***.***.***.2 and the other ***.***.***.28. I have checked online after an ipconfig /all and have found the reason for this to be that the second IP is created by DHCP for RAS & VPN purposes. It seems to cause no conflicts of any detrimental result apart from constantly sending me error messages and alerted reports. Does anyone know of a way that I can change settings somewhere so that Windows accepts this second IP, or at least stops alerting me of its prescence? Perhaps a registry hack of some kind...? • Windows XP Pro SP3 stop error code 0x000000F4

  I have a system running Windows XP Pro SP3. My wife is the primary user of this system, and the last several days in a row, when she tries to log in to the system it gives her a BSOD with the stop error code 0x000000F4. The rest of the error codes change every time she tries to log on, but that one seems to stay constant. The error it gives me is: A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. The machine will also get stuck in a boot loop, where it keeps giving me the screen saying that windows did not start successfully, and to choose how to start windows. I have tried Safe Mode, Last known Good Config, and Normally, and all have resulted in either a return to the boot loop, or BSOD. What might this mean? How can I fix it, without doing a clean install?

• Changing Servers - Redirect to new IP = No Downtime?

  I am changing servers of my website. The IP of old server cannot be moved to the new one. To have no downtime I am planing to do the following, please someone confirm it will work: Setup the new server and listen on the new IP Old server redirect all traffic to the new IP Change DNS records to point to the new IP My logic tells me that when I redirect to the new IP from my old box, the user will not see the domain name in the browser but will see the new IP. Is there a way to redirect to the new IP and send along the HOSTNAME with it so that the user will see the domain name in the browser? Im doing this because the site is in constant use and simply changing DNS settings won't do as database won't be synced between the new and old servers during propagation.

• Plesk on Windows Server 2008 memory usage

  I have a server running IIS and Plesk. There is a problem every day now in which the memory usage of PleskControlPanel.exe and w3wp.exe slowly increases. And at some point all of the sites hosted on the server go down. Restarting Plesk through its panel will reset its memory usage for a while, and restarting IIS will make it last even longer, but there is still the constant memory climbing problem. I cannot see anything by looking through the event viewer. Has anyone ever seen anything like this with Plesk on Windows? Thanks for any help.

• Get source and destination of outbound traffic in pfSense

  I'm looking at the traffic graph in pfSense (Version 1.2.2), which we're using as a router / NAT / ect on our network. Recently, I'm seeing a sudden, constant spike of 15 - 30kbps traffic outbound, that is unusual for our network (normally its below 2kbps, we're mostly all inbound traffic) Is there any way to determine what the source of this traffic is, or where it's going? (Just an internal IP address for source, and external IP address for destination would be all I need) I've already tried switching the traffic graph to 'LAN' and watching the host list on the right side, but it seems ... flakey. The numbers it shows seem to fade in and out at random, and the values never add up to anywhere near the graph values.   After three days of intensive Google searching, I have not found any high-level workflow of how to build a low profile - cheap - computing cluster (we are not interested in HA yet). This is just a front-end plus a node for now. We want to start small with rockscluster, provide a web-based server for offering services, and then add nodes as our budget increases. We're small company, so we haven't enough human resources to implement it smoothly. Here are some facts about our environment: Our hardware is not constant (we will add nodes). Our workload will vary (in the order from 200Mb - 1Tb) Our software will change (scientific applications for data mining) Do you know any visual workflow, worksheet, chart, describing the general necessary steps to begin our cluster planning?

• Interpreting Munin graphs showing available entropy and MySQL slow queries in sync

  We're experiencing performance issues on our website, and after reviewing our munin graphs, the only metrics we've found in sync are Available entropy and MySQL slow queries, with the latter influenced by our number of logged in users: Based on the wikipedia entropy page, my understanding is that entropy is the amount of randomness (here measured in bytes) that the system can use for various tasks, mainly cryptography and functions that require random input. Since the peaks in available entropy and MySQL slow queries are occurring in sync and at regular interval, that the number of MySQL slow queries is proportional to our number of Drupal users whereas the peaks in available entropy seem to be much more constant and less proportional to these 2 metrics, we're thinking available entropy is the reflect of a root cause which, combined with the traffic to our website, is causing those slow queries (and not the opposite, slow queries influencing the entropy). Accordingly: Q: What underlying problem do you think could cause regular peaks in available entropy that could have an influence on MySQL's ability to process queries?

• My computer is listed twice in the Network view; network shares are not accessible

  I have a couple of network shares set up on my Win7 machine. They've been in constant use, from that same machine on which they're set up. One morning they just randomly stopped working: When I went looking for what was wrong, I noticed that I also had my PC listed twice in the Network view in Explorer: "Sirius" is the name of the PC on which these screenshots were taken. I may have installed some windows updates around the time this happened. I have since tried rebooting and installing all the latest updates, to no avail. I've also removed the share in question and re-added it, making sure I give all rights to everyone. I'm an administrator on this machine, but I can't access the administrative shares (\\SIRIUS\c$) either, with the same message. I can access \\localhost\AcronisImages and \\localhost\c$, and I can ping sirius. Any ideas?

• Remote location looses connectivity

  I have a remote location that has constant internet access using DSL. The remote location only has three Linksys cameras that use the internet access with a router. There is no computer on the network. The router is configured to use the DYN.org service to keep the IP address updated if the internet provider assigns a new ip address. The problem I am having is the router after a period of time stops responding to incoming ping requests and the cameras are shown offline. However, if I keep one of the cameras constantly streaming data then the connection to all the cameras works just fine all the time. How can I keep the router from appearing to be sleeping and not responding to incoming requests? The router is the Linksys WRT300N.

  I'm running an Ubuntu guest OS on my Windows 7 laptop. Currently, I have it set up for bridged networking. The guest is os is configured for a static ip of 192.168.1.115, which depending on the network I'm connected to, may not be available. When I want to view my development work I hit that up in my web browser. I'm really looking for the following scenario: 1) My guest OS ip address stays constant. 2) I can access my guest os even if I don't have an internet connection, or a lan/router. 3) I can share files with my guest/host. How does one accomplish this using VMware Workstation?

  I've got a graph that was generated from a data set that contains: (date, value, annotation) The annotation is a constant value [its either there or is blank] and I would like to add in the third bit of data into the graph I have. An example of this is in the image. The blue line is a graph of the (date, value) graph, and I would like to add in the red dots as graphing (date, annotation@value).   I have really simple private VPS with some webpages and music server. I want to backup some configs and some scripts to dropbox or similar service. Server has no gui (except simple ssh X forwarding, which is neither convenient for constant usage and does not provide full desktop) everything is controlled through ssh. So my question would is it possible to setup dropbox client for command line use? How? Is there any alternatives for dropbox, which would have command line clients? Also is it possible to incorporate backup into script for cron job?

• erratic audio levels on windows vista

  I'm somewhat hard of hearing. I've been listening to my windows Vista machine with a pair of headphones so I don't annoy the others. I have 2 issues: 1) the volume varies enormously depending on the source. Having a windows alert occur while I am listening to a DVD or Youtube is a painful experience. Is there a preferred way to set all the different audio controls so I have a more constant volume? I already have lowered the volumes of the windows alerts. 2)Is there a way to limit the volume of my headphones to protect what is left of my hearing? Is there a software solution or should I be going for a hardware limiter? thanks retired dude

• Cisco VPN Client on Vista - Virtual Adapter

  I have used the Cisco VPN client for years, and on XP it is pretty much rock solid, on Vista, not so much. You might be able to connect, but unless you set up a constant ping to something, it usually will disconnect, with this error: Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapater Now, most sysadmins will say, update you client - yes, I know, it hasnt mitigated the issue, ever. I have been using it on Vista since it came out, and updated my client every time a new update comes out. I have used it where the VPN server was a Cisco PIX and a Windows Box allowing the Cisco Client to connect. Anyone have any fixes that you can do on your client to fix this issue?

• Windows 7 just restarts, no BSOD, shows "Event ID 14 volsnap"

  My Windows 7 just restarts without giving me a BSOD. When it reboots, it will hang sometimes and you have to let it rest. Sometimes it will print a message saying that Hal.dll is missing or corrupt. When it does restart I can't run a backup or a clone drive – it comes up with constant errors. I tried to run chkdsk – it says everything's clean. What is really puzzling is SyncToy on a different drive hangs half way through and won't run either. Machine: OCZ SSD Agility 2 for C drive SATA HDD for programs, documents on D drive MSI AMD 880 chipset Event viewer says something about critical power failure I/O operations and "Event ID 14 volsnap" – but that is just telling me the computer powered off which I already know.

• ASUS EeePC 1001PX, hard disk clicking in Ubuntu Maverick

  I just received my new Asus EeePC 1001px netbook. After installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it, I've noticed that my hard drive is making a clicking noise. Now this is not a loud clicking noise nor it's constant (only sounds occasionally and when hard disk is not writing or reading anything). Another strange thing is, this only happens when netbook is using battery power, the moment I plug in AC power clicking stops. Additionally I noticed that when I go into BIOS I can hear the click only once, same thing happens if I boot Ubuntu from USB. That led me to believe the problem is within operating system. I did all the surface scans and SMART tests and everything seems to be fine. Now noise sounds like heads are trying to "park" themselves so I tried disabling "spin down" option in Power Management but it didn't help. Any idea?

• How can I reduce the CPU usage of Offline Files?

  Whenever I have the Offline Files service running, there is a constant 25% CPU usage on svchost.exe (this is a quad core, so that means it's using up one core). This, in turn, triples the power consumption and keeps the machine hot... I do have several GB synchronized (music collection), but they are not changing at all, in either side. Am I misusing this feature? Is there anything I can configure to keep it down when there's nothing to do? Or should I forget about it and synchronize big folders manually?

  I have an application deployed on WebLogic 10.3, which exhibits a strange behavior. I am running a constant (not too high) load on my application (20 concurrent users, running a light activity). The response time is reasonable (well below 100ms after the application stabilizes) Memory consumption seems fine (My application creates a lot of short-living objects, but they are garbaged collected so the overall memory consumption stays under 500 mb). Threads stats seem healthy as well: And yet, after I leave my test running for a while, more and more execute threads ("[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'") are created, until eventually the application crashes: This test hasn't been running for a long time (All the new threads that you don't see in the first screenshot were created while I was writing this question), and I've seen much more threads being created. Any idea why these threads are being created?

• Do I need to disable access to a publisher database when setting up SQL Server 2000 Transactional Re

  I have a production database i.e. where there are constant updates and I've configured this to be published to another server using Transactional Replication. When I configure transactional replication I've been doing the following: disable access to the source database backup source DB then restore to subscription server configure replication re-enable DB access to our apps The problem with this approach is scheduling in downtime, having to suspend all the various timed scheduled tasks we run and shutting down access to our various applications that are dependant on this database. Can I just configure transactional replication without disabling access to the publishing database and the subscriber database will correctly catch up? i.e. are all the DML statements queued on the publisher and as soon as the subscriber is ready they are picked off and executed?

• Will I have internet connection issues next day, if I unplug router at night?

  I did this regularly a few years ago and used to feel like I was 'being punished' by the Interent svc provider for disabling access to my computer, because trying to re-connect the next day became a constant pain. I have the same linksys router, a comcast modem, and hi-speed broadband through their LAN. Question: who or what is at fault for lousy internet connections, slow connections, or no connections: (everybody's tech dept. blames everybody else) The router? 10 year olds, maybe obsolete? The modem? came with the service plan - can connect three devices on a sharedconnection. The ISP: I read they not only even control and completely regulate bandwidth usage, but they also ration it!! (true?) So can I safely 'pull the plug' each night for security or not? thnx
