• How can one make the title bar text/buttons have better contrast on dark colors in Windows 8?

  When Windows 8 color setting are set to a very dark color, such as black or navy blue, the title bar text and the minimize/maximize buttons are nearly invisible. This makes dark colors difficult to work with. In Windows 7 there was an advanced color options, this is gone in 8. The registry keys associated with this seem to still be present, but they have no effect. Is there a way to change this? Or a third party application that can do it? I don't want to use the ugly high contrast theme, I want to use the nice Win 8 theme with a dark color.

  My development machine is heavy on memory usage. It currently only has 4GB of PC5300. I'm going to buy 8 GB of RAM, but should I take out all my existing memory and install just PC6400 or leave some of the original and stick with 5300? I don't know if I'll ever need more than 8GB, I might, I'm just wondering if the speed difference between 5300 and 6400 is worth trashing the 2 or 3 GB of old RAM I would still have room for after adding the new RAM.

  I have recently bought a new laptop, an ASUS N56VJ-S4149H. I bought it to use it in all possible ways I could want, so that would be gaming downloading and streaming movies browsing the web and programming software. So far it has been running great but one thing annoys me a little bit. I frequently play Mount&Blade: Warband, it's a great game and you should check it out. Everything runs smoothly but only when I turn down the 'Texture Detail'. Otherwise it will lag a lot and I can't really play. Now my question is: Is this a problem of not enough RAM? At first I was really sure it was but after thinking about for a while I'm not anymore. My computer only has 4 Gigabytes of RAM and there is still a slot open. So will it improve when I buy another 8 Gigabytes? EDIT: It has an Nvidia GeForce GT 635M inside. and an Intel Core i5 3230M CPU with 2,6 GHz. Help and answers are really appreciated. Thanks to all.

• Can a VM perform better when only two cores instead of four cores are presented to it?

  We had a VMWare VM at work with two cores allocated to it that ran a pretty heinous process in IIS. Under load the process was maxing out the CPU usage on both cores, so we asked our system engineers to present the other two cores of the physical processor to the VM. The engineer immediately said that this would not improve performance at all, but would make the VM perform worse. That statement didn't make much sense to me, and I'm wondering how what the engineer said could be true. Are there actually cases where four cores presented to a VM would cause worse performance than two cores on the same physical hardware? Let's assume an ideal situation where there's only one VM on the host server, so nothing is being shared with other OS instances. I believe the physical server had a single quad core processor, and was most likely hosting multiple VMs. I don't really know what version of ESX was running on the host, nor do I know with certainty what the physical processor config was, but from within the VM I had access to, I saw two 3.33 GHz AMD processors. In the end, I never got to test the engineer's assertion out because (while we were trying to get the VM upgraded) we were able to optimize the process and reduce it's CPU consumption, and 2) we ended up migrating to a different VM on another ESX server which had four cores presented to it.

• which mail server is better suited for high volume? [closed]

  I'm planning out a project (web/mobile app) that would require a mail server that could handle hundreds of thousands connections per hour (both IMAP/POP and SMTP) and has the ability to interface with PHP (or python or whatever) to dynamically create, delete and check for mailboxes? This is not for spam stuff, I just need my app to generate random mailboxes (and static/permanent ones too) to receive mail and process it for items listed on my service. The little research I've done so far has turned up courier, dovecot, cyrus and haraka. I think the ability to scale and/or load balance (I'm new to these terms, pardon me) would also be a requirement. Any ideas?

• Why would my VPN connection work better than my direct connection?

  I have a new Windows 7 64bit laptop, which connects wirelessly to a ASDL router/modem. With my regular connection, page requests often time out - usually with form submissions. When I use the same connection to connect to a VPN (using OpenVPN) the requests seem to work fine. These are not requests to sites that are only available via the VPN - just regular websites I think this is specific to this new laptop (provided and set up by my employer) - other machines work fine. • Do newer physical interfaces make a better linux firewall?

  At work we use an old (10 year old) linux box with 4 interfaces to act as router/firewall for the network. There's never really been a need to change it since it's stable and handles all our needs. I'm wondering, though, would replacing the network interfaces with newer ones provide a benefit? Besides the obvious bandwidth increase (eg. 100MBit to GBit), would there be a latency reduction, or do newer cards pretty much do the same thing as old ones?

  Based on my research, I've read that nginx is best and ideal for serving up static files and images. My application depends heavily on uploading of images and rewriting them, then serving them up. Given that I only have one VPS currently, it has been suggested that I use nginx to serve up the images and website, and reverse proxy to Apache (on the same VPS) to rewrite files with image magick and handle the file uploads. Which would be the best solution, Apache, Nginx, or Apache + Nginx? In terms of best solution, I'm looking at minimal average RAM consumption, while maintaining decent load speed of maybe sub 2 seconds?

I currently have my custom cms, but i wanna go for opensource cms solution from now on. and as i researched Drupal is COOL for any kind of project from small scope to most complex ones. I have never used Drupal before, I know nothing about it yet. Would it worth to work on Drupal 6 for now, or better to wait for Drupal 7? is there any big difference about the way it works. i would feel silly to spend days-weeks to learn Drupal 6 now and after few months when Drupal 7 beta is out, a new learning curve and having troubles to upgrade to Drupal 7 my current Drupal 6 projects?   Hi, I have this project that it's due in a few hours and I still have a report to write... The project has nothing to do with Dot, but we were asked to draw a Graph with Dot, which I did. There isn't any problem in submitting my project like this, it does what's is supposed to do and this Dot thing is just an extra. But I would like to make it pretty, I just don't have time to learn about Dot right now. Basically, all I want is make pretty. Perhaps, a bigger height for the page, like A4 paper size. And have the graph display more to the bottom than everything to the side. What should I put on my .dot file to make it look better?

  So I bit into the hype and recently purchased an apple wireless keyboard and that evil bar-of-soap thing apple makes for a mouse. Couple of hundred dollars later and this is where I begin to worry about RSI. Go figure. Don't get me wrong, this apple mouse is genius and looks pretty as hell, but my right wrist feels tired after a full day's worth of work, so i'm thinking of switching. Anyone out there use a trackball? is this worse? should I get a super-ergonomic mouse instead? I've seen mouse-trackball combos but am not sold, they still elicit the same end-finger behaviour detrimental for RSI, right? I also have a wrist-rest mousepad, but couldn't find one suitable for my keyboard. I've even considered having a small touchscreen where the mousepad should go, no mouse (or alternatively, a usb trackpad). Just looking for ideas, is the trackball better than the mouse? /mp

After this you delegate a task to developer. Actually you also set up deadline. Which estimation is better to use when set up deadline: min or max? As I see min estimation can result in stress for developer, max estimation can result in using all the time which is allocated to developer even if task can be complete faster (so called Student syndrome). • Is regex too slow? Real life examples where simple non-regex alternative is better

  I've seen people here made comments like "regex is too slow!", or "why would you do something so simple using regex!" (and then present a 10+ lines alternative instead), etc. I haven't really used regex in industrial setting, so I'm curious if there are applications where regex is demonstratably just too slow, AND where a simple non-regex alternative exists that performs significantly (maybe even asymptotically!) better. Obviously many highly-specialized string manipulations with sophisticated string algorithms will outperform regex easily, but I'm talking about cases where a simple solution exists and significantly outperforms regex. What counts as simple is subjective, of course, but I think a reasonable standard is that if it uses only String, StringBuilder, etc, then it's probably simple.

I'm currently using MySQL, but before I make a decision to switch I want to know: How easy is scaling horizontally? Is it easier to manage than an SQL based solution? Would the above data I want to store be too hard to do schema-free? When I think association, I immediately think RDBMSs; can data be stored in something like CouchDB but still have some kind of association as stated above?
