• In what way I can implement packet filtering function in C++/C#?

  Background: I am going to design a firewall-like application (with GUI) which will include several functions such as Packet sniffing and packet filtering. Both of the functions should be implemented to support different protocol levels including application, transport, network and link layer. I only know a little in C#.Net programming to perform the IP packet sniffing. It is also known that packet filtering requires the techniques in WFP or LSP and packet sniffing in application requires dll hooking. Questions: I am not sure which programming language(either C++ or C#) would be suitable for designing such an application described above. If I want to implement the packet filtering function, any libraries will be needed? edit01: Someone suggest that winDivert would be helpful, is it true?

• What is Rails way to save images?

  I develop on iOS, and I'm switching from a PHP backend to Ruby on Rails. The interchange format is JSON. A quick Google search for 'save images in Rails' has nearly every result talking about saving image data as blobs to the database. I might be mistaken, but I'm under the impression that saving image data in a database is a huge waste of time and space (as opposed to saving a link to the file location ('/img/subcat/4656.png'). In PHP, it's pretty standard to receive the data, generate a filename, then save that file to disk, and then update the database with the image's location on disk. Is this the same for Rails, or is there some built-in ActiveRecord image functionality I'm not aware of?

• How can you build a C++ library to produce a .lib file for use in another project?

  I tried to use Cmake for the first time, I tried adding a library to my project (Specifically, PhysFS) but then I understood that the library had no .lib file or .a file at all, so I have to build those somehow. I have no clue where to even start around going this, what should I do? Someone suggested I'd go to the project folder and type "Cmake ..." then "Make ..." but I was clueless as to how I'd do that. How would I build the library headers and source files in a .lib file that I can link in C::B? I'm using Windows XP SP3

To avoid having duplicated pages, i want to add canonical meta tag in header... but on which page? does it have to be on both of them or only on second? On on first? Can you give me some advice please?

• Manually re-enable wireless and bluetooth

  So, today, I decided to turn off bluetooth to save battery power. When I did so, it did everything like normal. Whatever. But whenever I want to re-enable Wifi and Bluetooth, it just has "Enable Wireless" and "Enable bluetooth" grayed out in the respective things on the top-right of the desktop. I am using 12.04 Precise Pangolin on a Dell laptop that has never had wireless problems before. Clicking the grayed-out part does nothing. Re-logging and restarting has no effect, and I'm on an account that has full administrative permission. My attempts: ~$ sudo dmesg | grep wlan0 [19.960211] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready . ~$ sudo dmesg | grep blue [[nothing]] What do I do to manually re-enable wireless and bluetooth?

• Is there a mouse trail option?

  I have intermittent blindness in my right eye. Windows had a great mouse option that made a trail of cursors behind the one that's functional. It made my mouse easier to see. The control button helps me find my mouse, but I need something to help me track it as it moves. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance! PS: I prefer bash shell installs, copy paste easier then having to read small download link on websites.

  I'm building an application that basically pulls json data from a bunch of websites, processes it in some way and then writes it to a file. It is very easy to write this in a procedural way. I was wondering how this could be done in an object oriented way. Currently, the application looks something like this: res = get_json(link); process(res); write(res); Even if writing this in an object oriented way is not the best idea, tell me how it could be done because I have trouble with it.

So: the problem is: There is no way to make shortcut using bat. Only using third-party applications... Or/and using scripts. • Rendering trillions of "atoms" instead of polygons?

  I just saw a video about what the publishers call the "next major step after the invention of 3D". According to the person speaking in it, they use a huge amount of atoms grouped into clouds instead of polygons, to reach a level of unlimited detail. They tried their best to make the video understandable for persons with no knowledge of any rendering techniques, and therefore or for other purposes left out all details of how their engine works. The level of detail in their video does look quite impressive to me. How is it possible to render scenes using custom atoms instead of polygons on current hardware? (Speed, memory-wise) If this is real, why has nobody else even thought about it so far? I'm, as an OpenGL developer, really baffled by this and would really like to hear what experts have to say. Therefore I also don't want this to look like a cheap advert and will include the link to the video only if requested, in the comments section.

• Can I recover a non-system disk deleted during 2008 R2 setup?

  I've done a truly stupid thing and 'deleted' the data disk on a Server 2008 R2 box. Can I recover it? If so, how? I was rebuilding the box because a motherboard change had broken things. I've built loads of boxes and was going through the standard stuff without much concentration. I got to the disk screen which normally displays the two paritions on the drive: the recovery one and the system one. As normal, I deleted the two things I saw. It was only when two lots of unallocated space didn't merge into one that the full horror of what I'd done hit me. Yes, I've got backups... of the stuff I have space to back up. The real irony is that, earlier in the day, I'd ordered to 1 TB disks to deal with the problem. So, anyway, I'd really like to get this partition back because it'll save me a lot of time. How can I do it?

• Set document root for external subdomain (A Record) via htaccess

  I have a managed server (unable to control apache settings) with the default document root of: /var/www I have a web app running in: /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot I have a dedicated domain managed by the host that has the aforementioned webroot which works perfectly. I would like to allow externally provisioned domains to point to the server/web app via A Record config. If I access the site via IP, it takes me to the index located in /var/www. I would like to configure the .htaccess in my /var/www directory to rewrite requests from the external subdomain to the /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot directory. I've done so using the following rules: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} external\.domain\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot/index.php?url=$1 [L,QSA] When accessing external.domain.com, the app loads properly, but the paths to things like CSS files, images, etc. are prefixed with "/subdomains/app/", causing broken links. I've tried changing the RewriteBase (both in /var/www and /var/www/subdomains/app/webroot), as I believe that's what it's designed for - but no luck. Any ideas? FYI the app is built on CakePHP.   I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.

• Access to my files on Android

  I am thinking of subscribing to Dropbox which is slightly more costly than Ubuntu one but I need access to my files on the go, and I prefer to use my smartphone to my netbook most of the time as I like to travel light. I do not want to stream music, I want access to my files only. Whereas there is a free app for Dropbox to access said files, there isn't one for Ubuntu. I would be prepared to wait a while if you have got this in hand, have you actually given this any thought? Please tell me whether I should ignore Ubuntu One and link up with Dropbox?
