• Small app structure review

  Hi, I would be grateful if someone could review following: I have a main Form app. OnLoad it displays with Docstyle=Fill the main menu which is done by user control. If the user selects a choice in that Menu control, it fires an event (with one parameter Choice) which main forms reacts on. If the choice is run the app, it closes the user control (dipose) and call method starting the app. If the choice is to quit, it calls Application.Exit. Is that alright form programmers point of view?

• Google Bot trying to access my web app's sitemap

  Interesting find today...   I was perusing the event log on our web server today for any unexpected ASP.NET exceptions/errors. Found the following:   Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: Path '/builder/builder.sitemap' is forbidden. Request information: Request URL: https://www.bondwave.com:443/builder/builder.sitemap Request path: /builder/builder.sitemap User host address: 66.249.71.247 User: Is authenticated: False Authentication Type: Thread account name: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE   At first I thought this was maybe an attempt by a hacker to mess with the sitemap. Using a handy web site (www.network-tools.com) I did a lookup on the IP address and found it was a Google bot trying to crawl the application. In this case, I would expect an exception or 403 since the site requires authentication anyway.

• Oracle Usability Advisory Board, Europe

  Earlier this month, I attended the first Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in Europe (held in Oracle's big campus in Thames Valley Park, Reading, in the UK). My main interest here of of course was to listen to customer's experiences and requirements in the area of user experience, focusing in on user assistance natch, but also, given my background in the translation and internationalization world, to watch out for issues in those areas that impact on the UX. I met some great people there and took away some powerful UX thoughts about where might go with the area of language in the UI, localizations, and other cultural issues. One area of special interest to me is language as part of the user experience. By language I mean terminology and style of wordings you see in interfaces and help. Are they reflective of how people really work and are used to. What is its relationship to competitiveness and productivity. An area rich in research potential for UX. • How do I stop stretching during window re-size in XNA?

  In my windowed mode XNA game when the user resizes the window the game stops updating the window and the last frame drawn is stretched and distorted until the user releases the mouse and the resize completes. Is there any way to have the game continue to run "normally", updating frames and redrawing the screen, during the resize event? I realize that keeping the render loop going while resizing may not be possible or recommended due do hardware managed resources getting continually created and destroyed, but is there any way to stop the ugly stretching? Ideally by leaving the existing frame unscaled in the top left, or with a black screen if that isn't possible.

• Why is Conway's "Game of Life" used for code retreats?

  Code Retreat is an all-day training event that focuses on the fundamentals of software development. There's a "global" code retreat day coming up, and I'm looking forward to it. That said, I've been to one before and have to say there was a huge amount of chaos... which is fine. One thing that I still don't get is why the "Game of Life" is a good problem for TDD, and what good and bad TDD for it feels like. • Books or guides regarding secure key storage and database encryption

  I have an idea for a SaaS product I want to create, however, this product will store extremely sensitive data that needs to be encrypted at rest. The trouble is not so much the encryption, but the problem of securely storing the keys so that in the event the server was somehow compromised, the keys couldn't just be recovered and used to decrypt the database. Are there any decent books to guides regarding database encryption, and in particular secure key storage? This seems to be a less than straightforward topic and something that is difficult to get right. I'm seeing multiple ways to attack such a system, but unable to come up with one that is secure enough to store highly confidential information.

• Saving an interface instance into a Bundle

  All I've have an interface that allows me to switch between different scenes in my Android game. When the home key is pressed, I am saving all of my states (score, sprite positions etc) into a Bundle. When re-launching, I am restoring all my states and all is OK - however, I can't figure out how to save my 'Scene', thus when I return, it always starts at the default screen which is the 'Main Menu'. How would I go about saving my 'Scene' (into a Bundle)?   This is the second day at TechEd North America 2012 and yesterday I had many conversations about PowerPivot and SSAS Tabular. In the evening the book signing at O’Reilley booth has been a big success! I’m writing this post from the speaker’s room. It’s not crowded this morning because the keynote is going on and there are no people also in the hall, everyone is in the keynote room. Today will be a very busy day: I’ll be staffing at Technical Learning Center from 12:30pm to 3:30pm so this is a first chance for joining the conversation about Tabular and DAX.
