• Install problem on UEFI, Windows 8 new desktop

  I just bought an HP desktop, p6-2326s, which has windows 8 installed. I have tried booting a Ubuntu live disc but the machine won't boot it. When I bring up the UEFI boot menu it offers a selection of UEFI BOOT SOURCES, windows boot manager, dvd drive, IP4 Ethernet controller, or IP6 Ethernet controller. If I select the dvd drive with the CD in it I get the message "Secure boot violation, Invalid structure detected. Check secure boot policy in setup." With all other selections it just boots into windows. So where do I go from here?

• Agile Tools For Handling Multiple Projects

  Currently I'm leading our agile team in an iteration manager role as well as doing my regular dev work. One of the difficulties I'm facing as an IM is tracking burn-down/burn-up; not because I can't produce graphs, but because there's multiple projects that this team is working on at one time. At present I have an excel workbook with sheets that contain a whole bunch of graphs, both at an overall team and by-project level. It's clunky and I spend more time tweaking formulas and double checking calculations than I'd really like. As such, I'm interested to know if anyone has used a tool that can effectively produce these sorts of reports, burn-downs, and predictions across multiple projects. I've seen http://www.pivotaltracker.com/ do some nice things, and of course there's JIRA/Greenhopper, but I'm not aware of those being used to track the progress of multiple projects within one team. If anyone's got an idea of some tools, or has faced a similar problem before, I'd love to hear from you.

  By supporting tools, I mean: reference data manager, like virus definition for anti-virus software test data generator level builders for games simulators or advanced mocking systems Does the team building the core product (in the case above, the game or the anti-virus) should be part of the development of the supporting tools significantly, or this is a task you would outsourced out of the team to help it focus on the product? I don't have enough experience to evaluate the pros & cons of each, so I'm hopping you would come up with personal experiences to share, or even studies or papers you read on the subject.

• Can't access my partitions after installing Ubuntu

  I installed Ubuntu 13.4 replace with win 8 after installation complete I can't access my partitions and receive a message like this : Error mounting /dev/sda5 at /media/manaf/01CD6C0800CEE670: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sda5" "/media/manaf/01CD6C0800CEE670"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). • IE HTML Debugger Causing Issues with IE Enhanced Security

  In an effort to debug a Silverlight component on a page in SharePoint I opened the Developer Tools in Internet Explorer.  After choosing the Find > Select Element by Click option my page refreshed for some reason and a small bar appeared at the top of the page reading: You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. Please enable scripts and reload this page. After a quick look around the internet, some seemed to be suggesting that you have to disable the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC) in Server Manager.  Since this is one of the very first things I do when creating a VM, I figured the solution did not apply to me.  However, I decided to go ahead and enable IE ESC and then disable it again to see if that would fix the problem, and it did.  So if you see that error message in IE, the bar and you've already got IE ESC disabled, you can just enable it and disable it to get rid of the bar.

  Java.net, the home of  Java community projects, has been re-launched with a new look and new tools for developers.  The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects.  Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need. "We will continue to have the great mix of blogs, forums, and editorial content as well as new tools on the project side, including Mercurial, Git, and JIRA for developers," Java.net Community Manager Sonya Barry explains. The migration was huge effort. Over 1400 projects were migrated (and some 30 projects are left to go). A large part of the migration was a big cleanup of abandoned projects. With the high abandonment rate of open source projects, the was a lot to remove. • frequency out of range - please change display mode

  I just downloaded the latest version of the Ubuntu live CD, and have installed it on a desktop computer (a Fujitsu Scaleo P). Once installed it seems to work perfectly, although there are some updates recommended in the Update Manager. My problem is that, after having installed these updates and restarted the computer, I get this message on my monitor, and no Ubuntu interface is visible: frequency out of range - please change display mode I do not know how to change this when I can't access an interface. Is there a command that will bypass trying to boot the GUI and let me change the display mode via a CLI? I am brand new to Ubuntu and any help on this would be much appreciated.

• Where does ntpdate get its settings from and what is the "no servers can be used" error about?

  When I run ntpdate on its own, I get the following output: 8 Jun 15:47:46 ntpdate[31251]: no servers can be used, exiting If I run it with the -q ntp.ubuntu.com switch, it seems to query just fine. I have been hunting through many files and the most relevant one I have found is /etc/default/ntpdate, however, even with NTPDATE_USE_CONF set to no, I just can't understand/see how this error is occurring Any ideas? Update-- been looking non stop... It appears that ntupdate-debianworks fine and is the actual command that makes use of /etc/default/ntupdate, but, this doesn't answer the main question and I still can't find it...

• Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

  For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

• Is it normal for 12.04 to occupy almost 4GB? Also, related questions

  I'm using a ASUS EeePC 901 and have some basic questions/issues. I installed 12.04 on the 4GB drive, selecting the option to erase it before doing so. Immediately after the installation I saw that Update Manager had over 100 updates pending. I attempted to install these, but was told that I had less than 100 MB remaining. Does the OS occupy all the other space? It seems that the best solution is to install 12.04 on the 16GB drive. Is this true? If I do this, what is the best way to erase the 4GB drive afterwards?

• System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it? • How to change keyboard sleep button to hibernate?

  I have a keyboard with a "sleep" button that does indeed make my computer go to sleep. The problem is that Ubuntu can't really handle sleep on my computer, causing it go into a non-responsive mode, having the CPU fan spinning at full speed and it stops receiving any input. Hibernation instead works mainly as it should. I would like to set the sleep key to hibernate, but the keyboard settings' hotkeys tab doesn't have this "sleep" keybinding and though I could make new one with hibernate --force as the command, it would require root rights to run. How can I change the keyboard sleep button action to hibernate?

  Having read this heated question about Unity vs. UDK vs. ID something, I'm curious to know: what the repeatedly-hit, most crippling limitation(s) of Unity? In order to keep this question non-subjective, again, I'm talking about the top repeated offender(s) of Unity are. This is something that, as a Unity user, you really wish someone had told you about before you started using it. I have heard from someone that Unity does not deal well with version control, since it generates a lot of binary files (which are un-diffable). This, to me, is not really crippling as I work alone. • Could not write bytes: broken pipe - looking for log of removed packages

  I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. I tried sudo gedit /var/log/apt/history.log to see the log of removed packages, but get the following... ** (gedit:976): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=2d7d18532e9953bc8a2b852e00000007 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n Cannot open display: Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options. • Where can I find statistics / figures on how long testing should / could take?

  I'm trying to convince management that testing/QA takes considerably longer than non-developers think. Some smaller shops don't have budgets for testers and phbs automatically assume the developer will spend a few minutes after every build "testing" and deliver a perfectly functional system. Can someone point me to some numbers? e.g. Testing should be XX% of your total man hour count , etc etc? Or perhaps some real world experience? My goal is to have some numbers that are grounded in real life so I can make time/effort allocation justifications for "proper" testing when preparing estimates and timelines for applications. Maybe not full blown 100% TDD, but pragmatically close to it. I apologize if I seem vague.

• Need help with gimp 2.8 (cpu not used to full capacity) [closed]

  I know this isn't the right place to ask this question but maybe some one here can point me out to were I should place this question (or help me fix it :)). Since I updated Gimp to 2.8 (and let me start by saying how happy I am with the new gimp) I have notice that Gimp only uses 35% max of my CPU power. I have tried changing settings, assigning only one CPU to Gimp (both in gimp preference and in windblows task manager). No matter what settings I choose it only uses 35% of the cpu. If I assign just one Core to it then Gimp will use 100% of that core (which is about 35% of a three core processor I have. Any thoughts? I am using Windblows 7 64 bit, gimp 2.8.0, AMD a6-3500 cpu. I also use Ubuntu (am going to see if it works the same there). Any help would be great.

The company works hard to recruit new engineers, transfer projects, and keep a stable quality product. When people leave, it drives my friend crazy. These engineers are quite young and ambitious, and they want higher salaries and better positions. The big boss only thinks about it in financial terms, and his theory is that “three newbies are always better than one veteran” (which, as an experienced engineer, I know is wrong). My friend hates that theory. Any advice for him?
