• Insert into a generic dictionary with possibility of duplicate keys?

  Is there any reason to favor one of these approaches over the other when inserting into a generic dictionary with the possibility of a key conflict? I'm building an in-memory version of a static collection so in the case of a conflict it doesn't matter whether the old or new value is used. If Not mySettings.ContainsKey(key) Then mySettings.Add(key, Value) End If Versus mySettings(key) = Value And then of course there is this, which is obviously not the right approach: Try mySettings.Add(key, Value) Catch End Try Clearly the big difference here is that the first and second approaches actually do different things, but in my case it doesn't matter. It seems that the second approach is cleaner, but I'm curious if any of you .net gurus have any deeper insight. Thanks!

• Notifying when screen is off

  I'm trying to generate a notification which vibrates the phone and plays a sound when the screen is off (cpu turned off). According to the Log messages, the notification is being sent, but the phone doesn't vibrate or play the sound until I turn the screen on again. I tried holding a 2 second temporary wakelock (PowerManager.PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK), which I thought would be ample time for the notification to be played, but alas, it still doesn't. Any pointers to get the notification to run reliably? I'm testing this on an G1 running Android 1.6.   I'm trying to write a simple (stand alone) C# extension method to do a Fade-In of a generic WPF UIElement, but the solutions (and code samples) that I found all contain a large number of moving parts (like setting up a story, etc...) For reference here is an example of the type of API method I would like to create. • mocking command object in grails controller results in hasErrors() return false no matter what! Plea

  I have a controller that uses a command object in a controller action. When mocking this command object in a grails' controller unit test, the hasErrors() method always returns false, even when I am purposefully violating its constraints. def save = { RegistrationForm form -> if(form.hasErrors()) { // code block never gets executed } else { // code block always gets executed } } In the test itself, I do this: mockCommandObject(RegistrationForm) def form = new RegistrationForm(emailAddress: "ken.bad@gmail", password: "secret", confirmPassword: "wrong") controller.save(form) I am purposefully giving it a bad email address, and I am making sure the password and the confirmPassword properties are different. In this case, hasErrors() should return true... but it doesn't. • What wording in the C++ standard allows static_cast<non-void-type*>(malloc(N)); to work?

  As far as I understand the wording in 5.2.9 Static cast, the only time the result of a void*-to-object-pointer conversion is allowed is when the void* was a result of the inverse conversion in the first place. Throughout the standard there is a bunch of references to the representation of a pointer, and the representation of a void pointer being the same as that of a char pointer, and so on, but it never seems to explicitly say that casting an arbitrary void pointer yields a pointer to the same location in memory, with a different type, much like type-punning is undefined where not punning back to an object's actual type. So while malloc clearly returns the address of suitable memory and so on, there does not seem to be any way to actually make use of it, portably, as far as I have seen.

• Using type hints in Clojure for Java return values

  I'm working on some Java / Clojure interoperability and came across a reflection warning for the following code: (defn load-image [resource-name] (javax.imageio.ImageIO/read (.getResource (class javax.imageio.ImageIO) resource-name))) => Reflection warning, clojure/repl.clj:37 - reference to field read can't be resolved. I'm surprised at this because getResource always returns a URL and I would therefore expect the compiler to use the appropriate static method in javax.imageio.ImageIO/read. The code works fine BTW so it is clearly finding the right method at run time. So two questions: Why is this returning a reflection warning? What type hint do I need to fix this?

• Remote Development Workflow with Tomcat and Eclipse

  Currently, I have tomcat installed on the production server to serve my java webapps. I develop in eclipse at my personal workstation and then I use an ant script to build the project into a war file and deploy that on the server. This setup works well when I am on the same network as the server because deploying is almost instantaneous. However, now that I am working remotely uploading the war file to the server is slow and in most cases very redundant (there are about .5 GB of static media included in the war file). Is there a better way to update my webapp on tomcat from eclipse and if so what are the best options for implementing such a solution with minimal effort?

• Type problem when including tuple

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with Feature Pack 1. I have a typedef like this typedef std::tr1::tuple<std::string, std::string, int> tileInfo with a function like this const tileInfo& GetTile( int x, int y ) const. In the implementation file the function has the exact same signature (with the added class name qualifier) and I am getting a redefinition: different type modifiers error. It seems to be looking for an int& instead of a tileInfo& When I mouse over the type of the function in the header, i.e. tileInfo& it brings up a little bar saying static const int tileInfo. I think this may be the problem, but I'm not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

  I'm learning C++ and I am writing a function that determines whether a string contains only alphanumeric characters and spaces. I suppose I am effectively testing whether it matches the regular expression ^[[:alnum:] ]+$ but without using regular expressions.   One of my colleagues joined our company, which by the way is a internet company, months ago as an on-line marketing specialist. He majored English in his college and has never deeply touched IT before. He says that to be a good on-line marketing specialist he needs to lean some basic IT skills in order to deliver superb work. According to him, things like Search Engine Optimization, monitoring competitors' web sites, design some functionality on web site and so on require IT entree-level knowledge. And he asks me what kind knowledge is helpful for him to do his job. I am stunted by his question. It is easy enough to answer, things like HTML, CSS, even Photo-shop are required in some job descriptions. Also, I believe some basic understanding of dynamic web site, static web site is helpful to him. On the other hand, as a techie I still feel my answer is awkward. What is your opinion on this?   I'm looking into developing a multi-tenant SaaS application, and I found several sites that describe a solid way to separate the data using tenantIDs and updateable views. e.g. This blog post It all hinges on the ability to have your user accounts authenticated from a master users table and then having their respective database connections use those user-specific credentials. This way, the views can pull the userid and map it to the tenantID to display that user's view. However, most PHP frameworks tend to be very static when it comes to database connections (stored in text config files). They appear to be at odds. Does anyone know: a) how to make CodeIgniter handle this gracefully? b) a different PHP framework that might?

There is absolutely no lack of tutorials (starting with the ones on Silverlight.net or Scott Gu's blogs), but everything I have found is "by example". Is there a resource that explains how data binding works in Silverlight, from a Fundamental/Conceptual perspective, and provides end-to-end coverage of data binding features? The desire for a more fundamental source of information is driven by a number of questions that came up this afternoon in reviewing tutorials and writing sample apps, such as: Why can't I bind the value of a slider like this?: Value="{Binding=Age, Mode=TwoWay}" where Age refers to an int property in the object data context I bind in code-behind (the Visual Studio error message is Expected '[]'. • Converting Negative Decimal To String Loses the -

  I'm required to send in a negative myDecimalValue.ToString("C"); The problem is if myDecimalValue is a negative, lets say -39, after conversion I'm getting $39.00 as the string not $39.00. So I'm not sure how to go about this. This is the utility method that takes in the decimal. If the decimal is negative, I want the ToString to show a negative public static BasicAmountType CreateBasicAmount(string amount, CurrencyCodeType currencyType) { BasicAmountType basicAmount = new BasicAmountType { currencyID = currencyType, Value = amount }; return basicAmount; } I could go either way, a C or F2, all I care is about getting that negative sign intothe string if the incoming decimal is negative. I suppose there's no way to do this unless I check for negativity inside my utility method here. I can't just send a negative number and expect the ToString to work and for the ToSTring to automatically see that the decimal is negative incoming?
