• Ubuntu with Netatalk and Samba TimeMachine can't connect

  I installed netatalk on my Ubuntu Server a few weeks ago and configured it so that I could use Timemachine from my mac to backup on a server instead of a external hard drive. It worked really good until yesterday when I installed Samba to be able to share certain folders on my server to my mac. Now I receive an error msg: There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem. From what I understand is that the problem is on the server and not on my mac. I have tried to restart the computer and without adding any of the folders Samba is sharing adding the timemachine "afp://...@...". Is there a problem running them both at the same time, do I need to configure samba so that it doesn't reject afp? I'm pretty new at this...

• Windows 7 - Windows get autoselected

  I have a really annoying problem in Windows 7. I just updated Windows vista to Windows 7 32bit The problem is that every second the top windows is being selected. To explain better what happens: I open task manager and leave it there, then i select a icon on desktop, after 1 second, the icon is deselected and Task Manager windows is selected. Also i see windows borders blinking, every second. This is Annoying, because every time i do a right click or selecting a menu in any application, every second the menu get closed... I do not know what is doing this, i searched in task manager for some 'bad' application running, but seems ok, tried closing all programs but it's still there. If i restart the computer first i don't get that problem, but after a while it start.. I noticed that When using Visual Studio Express 2012, but i don't think is the problem, because also if i close VS the problem remains. Hope you can help me, i'm getting hungry!! It's annoying!

  I have created a Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file) on Windows XP that contains a lot of animation, using PowerPoint's Custom Animation tools. I would like to share this presentation -- animations and all -- with a colleague who has a Mac computer and does not have PowerPoint or Keynote. Is it possible to make a "movie" from my .ppt file that contains a lot of animation? I recall that another colleague once made me a QuickTime "movie" from a PowerPoint file, I think (although I do not remember whether he made it using Windows or Mac). On this "movie," clicking advanced the animation/slide, just as clicking would do in an actual PowerPoint presentation. In that sense, it was not really strictly a movie, since I could interact with it by clicking. Do you know how to make such an interactive "movie" from a PowerPoint 2003 presentation (a .ppt file)? • Windows 8 scroll lag

  Don't have an issue with the desktop experience, but when it comes to the apps, scrolling in some of them is impossible to use correctly. Very laggy and jumpy, which is surprising because my computer has relatively high specs, only a year old. Scrolling using the manual scroll bar has no lag whatsoever it's simply whenever I use my touchpad. Maybe it's a touchpad issue? or more likely windows 8 as it seems fine in desktop view for scrolling? Any ideas where the problem may lie? Thanks

• Dual-headed graphics card choice: DVI & VGA with 512MB _or_ DVI & DVI with 256MB

  Which would you choose? Some more detail: I can choose between: A dual-headed card with both heads DVI but only 256MB of memory A dual-headed card with one VGA and one DVI, with 512MB of memory. Both monitors are 1600x1200 I'll be doing mostly business app development on the computer. No gameplay or advanced graphics work. It's running Win7 and is a quad-core i5. I'm thinking of going with 256MB one, just so both displays are DVI and I don't have to shift between sharp & blurry when I look from one screen to the other. But I'm not sure if the additional RAM would be a huge boon for some reason (Win7 GPU acceleration, for example? But with a quad-core, who cares?).

• Unable to modify variables phpmyadmin via variables tab (Xampp)

  I am quite new to phpmyadmin configuration. I had project where utf8 encoding is needed. What i'm trying to do is to change the variables text/char all into utf8. I changed, yes at that moment the values changed into values I wanted. But then when I terminate Xampp and reenters phpmyadmin page or even refreshing the page, all the values restored to default (original values). My phpmyadmin had default user as root and hadn't been set a password yet. There is also no logout button in phpmyadmin landing page. I had difficult time even to set the server connection collation (hangs indefinitely and never seems can be updated). phpmyadmin version:4.1.6 mysql:5.5.36 (latest version) I doubt this could be due to malformed installation, because same things happened in my other computer too (exactly the same versions). what could be wrong? thanks.

  Possible Duplicate: restricting access to volumes disk even for admin account windows How to restrict use of a computer? I want to limit my access to some data and what I want is that I should be able to access the data only on certain days of the month (e.g., every 3rd day). Is there any way like encryption or some utility to allow me to only access data on specific days? One idea that I was thinking of was to encrypt the data and store the password (will be complex and long so that I couldn't remember it right away) on some website which would then email me back the password in future on those specific days.

  I look for good practices for deploying with capistrano. I would like to start out with a short description how I used to do deployment. capistrano is installed locally on a developer's computer. I deploy thought gateway with capistrano option :gateway. Firstly, I thought that with :gateway option I need to have ssh connection only to gateway host, but it turns out that I need ssh connection (public key) to all hosts where I want to deploy to. I would like to find a convenient and secure way to deploy application. For example, in case when new developer starts working, is much more convinient to put his *public_key* only on gateway server and not on all applications servers. On the other hand I don't want him to have any connection to servers in particular ssh to gateway, just because he is developer, he needs to do only deployments. If you are aware of good practices for deploying with capistrano, please, let us know.

• Restore Windows 7 bootloader after Windows 8 install

  I have installed Windows 8 onto a partition after Windows 7, and when I turn my PC on, Windows 8 basically loads completely, and then I get the option to choose my OS. If I select Windows 8, I go straight to the lock screen, if I select Windows 7, my computer completely restarts and then boots into 7. I want to use the Windows 7 installation DVD to restore the Windows 7 bootloader using the method described by the How To Geek but I am worried that if I do this, Windows 8 won't boot. Can anybody advise on whether or not this will work, and if not how can I go back to selecting the OS right after the BIOS loads?

• Processor speeds on my machine don't live up to manufacturer hype

  Why am I not seeing the promised speed claims of processor manufacturers on my computer? Producers of processors claim that their product can perform so many thousands (or millions) of operations per second. And yet on my machine (4GB, 3500hz), the typical program (Word, Visual Studio etc.) takes at least 10 seconds to start. I've formatted my hard drive and ticked all the necessary boxes to optimize my machine and yet I'm not seeing the promised speeds. Say it takes Outlook ten seconds to load. How many millions of operations does it really go through in order to start up?

• setting visual bell to flash in iTerm

  Hi, I am using iTerm on OSX (leopard) to ssh to a linux machine. I run screen on the dev machine to save my work between sessions. I am not a big fan of audio bell and I don't like screen's default 'Wuff Wuff' bell (or any other little message shown at bottom of the page). What I like though is to have flash (foreground and blackground colors swapped for a fraction of a second) as my visual bell. I used to use PuTTY and it is as simple as ticking a checkbox but I can't find such an option in iTerm. My question is how can I set my visual bell to flash? The ideal answer would work with iTerm on local computer, iTerm sshed to a linux server, and iTerm sshed to a linux server and ran screen.

• How can I chainload a USB drive from GRUB2?

  I'm using GNU GRUB version 1.99-12ubuntu5, booted over the network using PXE. I used grub-mknetdir to generate the GRUB image and directory tree, which I'm serving on a TFTP server using Tftpd32 in Windows. I've put the latest version of Clonezilla on my USB drive using Tuxboot. Right now, in GRUB's CLI, using ls lists only the (pxe) device, even if the USB drive is plugged in before the computer is on. Is there any way I can chainload Clonezilla on my USB from GRUB, which is booted over the network?

• How to re-configure graphics from Intel integrated to Intel / ATI switchable?

  There are lots of 'how to get switchable graphics to work' guides but I found none on how to configure a system for switchable graphics operation on Ubuntu from the ground up, nor explaining the current driver situation for particular computer models (integrated+discrete combinations). System information: Ubuntu 12.04 amd64, installed clean with system configured to use only the integrated Intel card Lenovo Thinkpad T500 Intel GMA 4500MHD / ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 Current situation: Mature and up-to-date system with no configuration changes to what's given above. I've made a backup image of the system (Clonezilla) so regardless of what's written below let's assume it's our starting point. If something in What I have already tried is not clear you may as well diregard it. What I have already tried: Configuring BIOS to switchable graphics and: Installing Additional Hardware drivers - returned an error. Installing proprietary amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run automatically - system starts to 'low-graphics mode'. Tried fixing as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#Manually_installing_Catalyst_12.6.2C_special_case_for_Intel.2BAC8-ATI_hybrid_graphics Got lost, gave up. Please note that while configuring BIOS for integrated graphics only is pretty straightforward, configuring for switchable graphics is not.

• Use external speakers with laptop hooked to separate monitor?

  I have a laptop with a set of external speakers hooked up to it on my computer desk. The speakers use the standard 3.5mm audio (headphones) jack. The speakers work fine, but I've recently added a separate monitor to my laptop via HDMI. With the monitor hooked up to my laptop and the speakers still hooked up to the laptop, sound will only come out of the built-in monitor speakers. When I look at my audio settings, there are three different "audio playback devices" showing up, but only the built-in monitor speakers make noise when I click "test" (and I hear nothing when I set any of the other devices as the default. Does anyone know how I can still use my external speakers when using a separate monitor with my laptop? I'm hoping there is a solution that doesn't require the laptop to be open or closed, because I use both scenarios. I came across this post, but it doesn't look like they had much luck.

• Website hosted at home pingable from outside, but not browseable from outside

  I have a simple setup. Server at home has local I.P. 192.168.1.3 IIS is running on the server and the website is up. Windows firewall on the server has an exception rule for port 80 TCP Router has static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX Router is forwarding TCP port 80 to 192.168.1.3 My domain registrar is my DNS host and is pointing to the static I.P. XX.XXX.XX.XXX of the router Here's what I can and can't do. I can browse the website from within my home network either by I.P. or domain name. I can ping the domain and the I.P. from outside the network (from a computer at work). I can't browse the website either by domain name or by I.P. Wierd. Why I can't browse my website? Incidentally, I wasn't sure this question was appropriate for SO, but after finding a few others similar to it on SO, and no comments on those questions saying anything about it being innapropriate, I decided I would post this question. Let me know if this is not appropriate for SO, or is more appropriate for another of the SE websites. Thanks!

  I am a linux newbie so excuse me if I ask silly things. I recently find out that if I edit GRUB before booting and I add rw init=/bin/bash I end up with a root shell. Being in a condition that I want to understand everything I would like to know why this happens. I mean is it a bug? is it a feature? is it there to help admins to fix things as it only works if you have physical access to a computer? Which part are we exploiting? GRUB or the actual kernel?   For the 5 years I worked for various companies, I worked in large software like computer vision kits, embedded, games. I found myself very good at debuggins skills, I've even found and fixed bugs in frameworks and I solved them. The problem is that I'm very weak at problem solving. I got interview with Qualcomm, and they said you're fine at software, but you have a limited problem solving, I also had the same results with Google. I'm very bad at solving puzzles and brain teasers. During the interviews I solve all of the software related problems on the blackboard, but when I went to the GM and face math problems and probabilities, I struggle. How can I improve my problem solving skills? Edit Some of the problems: A cake that is cut from anywhere and needs just one cut to halved in equal. I told him cut it horizontally, he said No, consider it as a 2D Problem!. Consider a concenteric 3 circles, each one can get a color, but not matched with the other circle, how many blobs you can make out of those circles ? this was with the GM ( Augmented Reality SDK) Consider a train, an infinite one, and you looked at the window, and there are two cars, one big, and one small, what is the probability of having only a big car, I said 50%, he said, what if that two cars you dont know their length, and you want to get the probability of getting the biggest one, I struggled, didn't solve it... I was really exahusted after long day of interviews prob of having a number divisible by 5 in numbers from 1 to 100.. struggled!! All coding questions I solved them like reverse a string, detect a cycle in a linked list,..etc.

• windows 7 sound stopped working out of nowhere

  hi, i have had windows 7 installed for a few months, working fine with soundblaster xi around 7p was watching youtube videos with sound went and made dinner around 9p came back, realized there was no sound coming out of speakers, even though windows mixer shows sound output restarted, no sound uninstalled driver, restarted had windows search for driver, it installed, windows mixer showed sound bar moving while playing an mp3 but couldn't hear i've tested with speakers plugged into soundblaster, as well as headphones plugged into the audio port on the front of my computer. what could have happened? what could the solution be? • How to get average of multiple time series

  I have few computers running. I want to get the average CPU usage of these computers and plot it as a graph. So I've collected CPU usage in regular intervals in these machines. So for each computer I have a data set of time and CPU usage. But the times at which CPU measurements are taken in different machines are not in sync. For example in 1st machine CPU may be measured in time 1, 5, 9. In the second machine CPU may be measured in time 2, 5, 8. I want to get an average data series from these different data sets. • How do I solve VirtualBox error 0x80004005?

  Hi I was trying to run Windows XP under Virtual Box (host system Ubuntu 10.04) and I've got an error message saying: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. This is terminal output: maria@maria-laptop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules * done. * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules * done. * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS * Failed, trying without DKMS * Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules * done. * Starting VirtualBox kernel modules * done. After that I can run XP on Virtual Box, but when I try to log into user's account, I have the message that I have to register XP (I haven't done it yet, as each time I was cliking on pop-up window suggesting registration, nothing was happening). I click that I want to register it now and appears the message about error 0x80004005, which prevents Windows to check the license for that computer (the message is in Polish, so I don't post it here...). • What are the minimum hardware requirements for the latest version of Android Jelly Bean OS?

  I searched around, and there's no information that points exactly to the suggested, minimum, or otherwise dated information containing specifications on this. I want to install a newer version of Android on an older ZTE-X500 MetroPCS smartphone. However, I'd like to know the backwards compatibility in regards to using a newer featured OS with lackluster, limited hardware compared to today's smartphones, such as Galaxy S4. However, I still wish to do this. If Jelly Bean is too demanding, I will set up Honeycomb, or get a modified Honey Comb ROM, or tweak the source to my preferences. However, nothing outlines the specifics of the "system requirements" it suggests for optimum performance, such as RAM, processor speed, processor features, and/or any other features, like DMA, video circuit advancements, and/or sound and special hardware requirements noted as well. Please, if you will, point me to a source that mentions this, and please tell do not link me to any PDF file formats. Thank you. PS: I'm a computer programmer.
